She couldn't say that she missed teaching, exactly. Certainly, this flying visit to Scalvoris was busy, and Faith wouldn't have minded had there been no classes scheduled. But there were, and she'd agreed when she took the job she currently had. So, she didn't grumble and she just got on. Besides this was an interesting class and she was glad that she had been asked to teach it. No lecture hall for her this trial, instead she made her way to the large classroom where the tables were laid out. Eight of them in total and, on each one, a body under a sheet. Currently, the corpses were covered over and that was how it was going to remain. Faith had the keys to the classroom - they certainly weren't going to be leaving this room unlocked. There were sixteen students waiting outside, as she had expected and the young woman sighed slightly as she realised that, of course, everyone was taller than her. At least the corpses were laying down and so she could see them, she considered to herself but did not say.

"Alright, we're starting out all around the large table, please." There was a buzz of excitement from the students, they were keen to get going, wanting to get their hands on the flesh, to see the bodies. Faith knew that, by the end of this, two of them would have passed out and another two would have changed subjects. Still, right now it was all keen eyes and the slightly-nervous jostling of each other. "Take a seat please, everyone. Round the table, there are stools, yes. Thank you." She no longer felt nervous when she taught, and she had to admit to a particular buzz of her own energy. Not, of course, for the reason that the students were feeling it. No, this was the feeling of being in front of a class.

As always, Faith had a box of things on her desk and she brought it over to the large desk which sixteen eager students sat at. "I need to be clear about what we're going to do to-trial," she said and she pulled out a small soft toy. A fluffy little thing which had obviously been well loved. "My daughter, she loves that. She can't sleep without it, it's why it's so chewed." Faith saw the frowns of confusion, but she had them, she knew. They were intrigued as to what she was doing. Next, she brought out a shell. It was a pretty, sparkling conch-shell and she placed it next to the small stuffed rabbit. "I picked that up on the beach on a date with the other professor Augustin." There were a few awwwww noises, which caused Faith to grin. "We went stargazing, pirates attacked. It's a thing." Next, a pair of knitted gloves. "I made these. It's something I enjoy to do, to make things for people. People I love, people who need my help. I enjoy baking and cooking, making and looking after people, I really do. Then, there's these." Of all things, she pulled out a pair of boots, welly-boots with bright daisy designs painted on them. "A birthday gift, from my husband. He actually bought me a pony, but these were for me going to the field."

Putting them down, Faith spoke and her voice was low, deep and filled with emotion. "Look at those things. They are memories, filled with emotions. They tell you about me, my family, my life. They tell you a lot about who I am. About what I am. Really look at them." Then, she brought out a tray and placed it down in front of her, before pushing it to the middle. "They, they are what I am. So now, let me tell you what I am not."

Over the tray she lifted a small box, then tipped it. From it poured slabs of meat. Bits of steak, offal, blood and cartilage all mingled together in a slapping, squelching mess.

"I'm not that," she said and looked at them. "I'm not. Nor are you and nor are they," now, she gestured to the covered over corpses in the room. "There will be a zero tolerance policy on this. Those are people. Husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters. They loved and they laughed and they cried and you will treat them with all respect or I will make sure you wish you had." Of course, the fact that her eyes glowed slightly red as she said that added weight to the idea that they really weren't going to mess around. "Any questions?"

It appeared there were none.

It was an important thing to teach them, that idea that they were dealing with a person. Of course, it was something she did in order to ensure that they treated the body with respect but it was more than that. "For each of you," Faith said, moving to stand beside the body she was going to be working on, "there will come a moment. In that moment, you will realise just what you are doing. Exactly what you are actually doing. The moment that I did," silver eyes looked around at them and she smiled. "I ran. I turned and ran because I could not stay in the room. I couldn't breathe, I was so overwhelmed with the sudden realisation." They looked at her with such serious eyes and Faith felt a pang, just a brief moment of envy for them and their innocence. "Better to do that here, than in the field."

Pulling the sheet down so that they could see the head and shoulders of the body she was working on, Faith began. "Wherever possible, in the circumstances you are in, maintain dignity for the person. This means, for example, keeping the sheets over them as far as you can, but also making sure that you are fully and completely prepared. Have all of your equipment to hand, and know what you'll need in advance." That only came with practice, she said, explaining that they needed to work here, in the lab and classroom, as much as they could. "Also, consider how you will make notes. How will you record? Many times, we work in a pair here, one performing the surgery, the other recording it. "

"Why don't you?" One of the students asked and Faith smiled, lifting up her hand to show her black nails. "I have been most fortunate to be blessed by a number of Immortals. Vri grants me the ability to never forget."

It was odd, Faith considered, just how intrigued people were by her relationship with the Immortals. The student in question, a young Eidisi male by the name of Ghian, leaned forward. "Like, nothing, ever?" Faith nodded her head in acknowledgement. Nothing, ever. "So, you remember all of yestertrial? Every trill and bit?" Faith lifted her eyes and looked at him. "I remember being born and every moment of my life after." That caused them to stop. Ghian spoke again, and this time his voice was less confident, less teasing. "But you were a slave, weren't you?" Faith smiled and nodded.

"Indeed I was. I remember being branded, yes, at ten trials old. It is not a memory I cherish, nor one I shy from. But it is an important lesson. Think of each scar you see when you are working. Each one is a story." Some good, some bad, but they were, Faith said, clues. "Because we need to ask. What is the purpose of this? Why do we perform these investigative, invasive surgeries on those who are already dead? Most times we know why, after all, or have a good guess. So why do it?"

They discussed that question, and Faith was pleased with the way they answered her. "Yes," she said with a smile. "We are investigators. And more than that. We are future-proofing. Every bit of information we gather, it allows us to build up a picture. More understanding of how the body works. So, we will start at the beginning." Lifting the scalpel, she smiled around. "Attend, and then duplicate."

As she put the last of her instruments away, Faith reflected back on the lesson. They'd done well, all things considered. Two had thrown up, Ghian had passed out, one other had turned and run. Those numbers were fairly low. But what she was pleased about was the knowledge that, from this point on, these soon-to-be doctors would approach autopsies with the right mindset. In Vri and Famula's name, she knew that she had done what she needed to, in order to ensure that the dead were treated with reverence and respect. Come to that, she had done what she needed to in order to ensure that they did this correctly. Mistakes in an autopsy could lead to the missing of vital clues and the data collection Faith was undertaking for her Licentiate required as much information ~ and as detailed ~ as possible.

Faith lifted her head as Ghian knocked on the door. "How are you feeling?" There was absolutely no shame in her eyes about what had happened to him. He was simply showing his compassion. He gave a slight shrug and moved on; Faith didn't argue with him. "I just wanted to say that it sounds more like a curse," he said. She smiled, shaking her head slightly. She knew what he meant. "Knowledge is never a curse. Remembering or forgetting something doesn't change whether it happened or not, after all." He looked at her and shook his head, stubbornly. Again, Faith felt a flash of almost-envy for him. To be so sure, so certain. It seemed such a long time ago.

"Want to help tidy up?" Her question was quiet, not pushing him. He nodded his head and the pair of them got to work.

It's admittably been awhile since I read Faith, but my goodness:

Funny how our characters hold a shadow of ourselves. This mindset most definitely reminded me of you and how you've faced things in the past.

I like the small details you add, like how she sighs when she realizes her students are all taller than her; it's small characterizations like that that endear me to a character. She takes a great command of the classroom, and honestly, I imagine the teachers I had growing up, not a short woman of only twenty! But, given her skill levels, it's not that hard to piece together. It's great seeing how far she's come in personality, once unable to even look someone in the eye for prolonged periods of time, now look at her! The Venoras would be so proud.

She gives a really compelling class, and I enjoyed the morality of making herself appear so human with her family and the things they liked, and then threatening the class with glowing red eyes. That was... scary, to say the least. Good thread, it was a good place to get re-acquainted with your character.
