The Hailstorm, Part 2

Part 1

Cylus 8, Arc 721

Evening

The hailstorm has finally let up a bit.

Devin’s roommate Aidan had told him that a patient was waiting for him in the examination room, a man that had gotten hit by a hailstone, so, the young Mortalborn did what every doctor that was worth his grain of salt did. He put on his doctor’s coat and went to see said patient immediately. That was where the similarities with most of his colleagues ended though. Devin’s doctor’s coat was not white, like doctor’s coats usually tended to be, at least not completely. It had bright violet details that matched the color of his eyes almost exactly, and it was rather fashionably cut and fit his body absolutely perfectly. He wanted to look good, even when he was treating sick or injured people!

“Good evening”, he greeted the man that was sitting on the examination table in the examination room that had been his second bedroom once upon a time in a cheerful tone of voice and flashed him a brilliant smile.

The man who was bald, a little overweight and approximately middle-aged, looked up, did a double take because he hadn’t expected the doctor that would be treating him to be so young and colourful and mumbled, “Good evening to you as well, doctor”, before he winced slightly as if he were in pain and proceeded to tell Devin what exactly had happened, without any prompting on the Mortalborn's part.

“I was just on my way home from work – I’m a baker’s assistant, you know, so I start my shift in the middle of the night – when the hailstorm suddenly began. Before I could even think about finding shelter, a hailstone hit me right on top of my head. I felt a little bit woozy afterwards, and my head bled a whole lot. It has stopped bleeding for the most part now, and it doesn’t even hurt that badly, but my wife insisted that I go and see a doctor, nevertheless”, he informed him.

His tone of voice was rather apologetic. He sounded if he absolutely hated bothering Devin.

Devin eyed him for a moment before he put on a pair of gloves, approached him and asked him, “Can I take a look?”

A moment later, when the patient turned around in order to reveal his injury, he recoiled briefly because it was bigger than he had expected before he began to grin (which the patient fortunately couldn’t see since Devin was standing behind him now). He had a wound that was approximately four centimeters wide. It was not that deep, but it would still require …

"It will require stitches", he told the patient who didn't look particularly pleased once he stepped forward again and tried to curb his excitement.

That was a bit of a challenge because he just loved giving people stitches so much!

"Some scalp lacerations can also be closed with a hair positioning technique that is known as braiding, but since you don't have any hair on your head, I obviously won't be able to use that technique. Don't worry though, I'll numb the area so that you won't feel anything. It will be over in no time", he assured the man, secretly wishing that he would have been able to see the hailstone that had caused such a wound.

It had to have been quite an impressive hailstone!

Once he had cleaned the man’s head and disinfected it (That he didn’t have any hair didn’t mean that his head was completely clean!), Devin numbed the area which caused the man to wince a little bit, and then he went to work. Since his first attempts at suturing wounds, he had improved tremendously, and his stitches weren’t quite as haphazard anymore. Maybe, the baker’s assistant wouldn’t even get a scar – and if he got a scar, it would be a really nice one that he would be able to show off. He would be able to tell everyone he had received it in battle!

At least that was what he would do if he ever got a scar, Devin decided as he prepared the needle, which was something that he hoped would never happen because he wasn’t very fond of getting hurt and didn’t find scars particularly appealing either, at least not on his own body.

With that thought in mind, he made the first stich – at which point he temporarily stopped thinking about scars and gigantic hailstones that made your head bleed and focused entirely on his patient. Most of the time, the young Mortalborn (who had no idea that he actually was a Mortalborn) was overly excited and enthusiastic, but when he really needed to, he could stay focused on the task at hand – at least most of the time.

Before long, he had put some ointment and something to protect the wound on the man’s head. It was just then that something occurred to him. Head injuries didn’t only cause bleeding and such; they could also have another side effect that was just as unpleasant, if not even more so. “If you start to experience memory problems, nausea, vertigo or a bad headache during the next forty-eight breaks, come and see me again immediately – or ask your wife to get me. If that happens, you have a concussion. Either way, I want you to take it easy for the next two trials”, he told him in a chipper tone of voice as he put the various tools that he had needed to take care of his patient away and pulled his gloves off.

“Concussion?” the man repeated.

Devin nodded.

“Oh, and please put the hood of your cloak on. The hailstorm seems to have let up a bit, but hailstones on your head when you have a relatively fresh head injury are not a good idea”, he told him, stating the obvious.

A few moments later, after he had received his payment, he finally sent the man on his way. He was just about to go back into the living room in order to relax and maybe drink a bit or make some music when …

… the next patient showed up?

Actually, two people were sitting on the bench in front of his examination room, a young woman with curly red hair and a brown-haired man who was somewhere in his thirties. Both of them were human, and both of them didn’t have any obvious injuries. They didn’t look sick either which made Devin wonder what exactly was wrong with them. Maybe they had come to see him because he was just such a good-looking man? He kind of liked that!

When he gestured for the man who had apparently arrived first to follow him into the examination room, and the man took his shirt off, he was pretty sure that that was the case. A moment later, he noticed a multitude of red welts on the man’s back though. He raised an eyebrow and came closer, a curious expression on his face. What was the matter with the man?

“I was outside during the hailstorm”, the man explained which caused the Mortalborn to shake his head slightly because being outside during a hailstorm was a pretty stupid thing to do in his opinion – and kind of dangerous on top of it. He pulled on a fresh pair of gloves regardless and inspected the red welts, prodding them slightly as he did so.

“They’ll fade on their own, without any medical intervention”, he finally decided. “If they hurt too much, I can give you something for the pain though. Ice packs might help reduce the swelling. Fortunately, ice is easy to come by at the moment”, he continued before he handed the man a mild pain killer as he said that he needed one, wished him a speedy recovery, sent him on his way and told the woman to come in.

She didn’t have any red welts on her back, but she sported a large, nasty looking bruise on her right shoulder. As it turned out, she had gotten hurt during the hailstorm as well. A hailstone had hit her when she had decided to check if the cows in the stable were okay and tried to calm them down. When he accompanied her to the door, after he had taken care of her, he noticed that the next patient, an old lady with grey hair was already waiting.

Next to her sat a big, shaggy dog, with a pink tongue hanging out of its mouth.

Devin did a double take before he informed the old lady, “Dogs are unfortunately not allowed in the examination room, so your pet will have to wait here while I treat you.”

“Oh, but Rex is the patient”,
the old lady told Devin and smiled sweetly at him. “I was taking him for a walk because he really needed to do his business, and he got hit by hailstones. I want to make sure that he is okay, and the veterinarian was not at home.”

“Doctor is doctor, right?”
she asked and batted her eyelashes. “Besides, they say you are one of the best.”

Devin was normally quite receptive to flattery (He absolutely loved receiving compliments!), but he had to admit that he was a little out of his element at the moment. So, he crossed his arms over his chest and proceeded to inform the old lady in no uncertain terms, “There are a lot of differences between a dog and a humanoid, and taking a dog to a doctor for humanoids is really not the best …” He was just about to tell her that taking a dog to a doctor for humanoids was really not the best idea, unless the dog was really a Becomer in dog form, when something suddenly occured to him.

So, without further ado, he told her to wait a bit, he was going to get his roommate who would be able to treat Rex, walked over to the staircase and called out, “Aidan, please come! I need your help with a patient!” Devin himself knew little to nothing about animals, but Aidan was competent enough when it came to taking care of their various problems. “You’ll get half of the money”, he added when his roommate didn’t show up right away as it seemed as if he might need a bit of persuading. Normally, Devin was very reluctant to share his money, but if he sent Rex’ owner away, he realized, he wouldn’t get any money at all. Receiving half the money was better than the alternative!

Fortunately, Rex (who he had been treated in a different room because of hygiene and such) had only had a few bruises that were easily taken care of. Once the dog and his owner had left, Devin and Aidan who had been a bit surprised when he had seen Rex finally went back to the living room. Aidan got something to drink for them, Devin retrieved his cigar case, and then they sat down on the couch in order to relax a bit while the hailstorm that was noticeably lighter now continued outside.

Devin was just about to light his cigar, leaning slightly against the older man because he was getting a bit tired (It had been quite an exciting and exhausting trial, all in all.), when another knock on the door could be heard. The fifth patient of the evening had arrived. Unlike the first four patients, the male Biqaj that walked into Devin’s house now hadn’t been hit by a hailstone. He had gotten bored due to being stuck inside for breaks on end and finally decided to take care of a few much-needed repairs around the house.

In the process, he had accidentally cut his hand.

A bandage, some ointment and something to disinfect the cut later, he left again, and Devin … the young Mortalborn seriously considered just staying in the examination room because yet another patient might show up. Fortunately, the fifth patient was the last one for a while, so he eventually returned to Aidan in order to finally enjoy his drink and his cigar. It had definitely been an exciting trial, he decided but on the other hand …

… on the other hand, he had so many more shiny nels now!

He loved nels!

Impressive how much you can pack into your stories, dude. From medical exams to inner thoughts to the theme of growing numbers seeking your care to roping in help... everything flowed nicely and in a reasonable, understandable fashion. Clearly you've done some research here, too. I'd be careful only about redundancies, difficult as it is to avoid them sometimes, namely: "the examination table in the examination room". Eh... don't really need that first one, do we? The fact someone will soon be sitting on it BEING examined will be enough. That more of a personal quibble, though. The rest? You don't need any critique ;)
