“I wanted to thank you for bringing to my attention the previous matter.”

Korva eyes narrowed but she nodded it off, more interested in the girl sitting primly beside her. Whatever Felicia did, the Biqaj had her own mind about it after some research and digging there was plenty yet to be done. “Ain’t big deal.”

“It is to us.” That made her glance up, eyes meeting the managers before she let out an easy smile and shrugged in acceptance. Nodding now that that was out of the way, the manager made to continue, shuffling papers around. “Ashan has—“

“I’ll go with you.”

Felicia sigh lightly in the background, clearly exasperated with the two for constantly cutting her off but not saying anything else. Korva was too busy studying the girl to care, though she sat proper and her head was held high there was a wobble to her lips to match the nervous twitching of her hands. Her own lips twitched in response, she could appreciate the false strength. But she knew from experience kids didn’t like to be patronized and it was clear to her that Ashan had put a lot of thought into the decision even if it clearly made her terrified.

“Aye. We agreed,” Korva glanced to Felicia before continuing, “but ya gotta say bye. Ain’t gonna whisk ya away and yer still gonna see friends.”

The girls shoulders slumped in relief though she nodded as if she had been anticipating it all along and this time the Biqaj did not stop the amused smile from spreading. She turned herself fully to the manager.

“Your references checked out but since we didn’t actually fill out any paper—“

“Ain’t ready right trill.” The woman interrupted, “wasn’t know if she gonna say yes. Gotta get clothes and—“

“I’ve got my own clothes, I don’t want you picking mine!”

“Ashan!”

“But look at her!” The girl protested as Korva laughed, not offended. Most people took awhile to get used to Biqaj style even if she never wore the fancier adornments that her people liked.

“Aye, ain’t much wrong what she say.”

“Still,” Felicia said sternly, though her own gaze look askance at Korvas clothing often enough, “we don’t always have to say what’s on our mind to all of Idalos. And I did have some concerns about the language barrier—“

“Will teach, am learning more Common—”

“If I may finish?” That made the woman flush lightly, shooting Ashan a look as the child smothered a giggle behind her hand. “Thank you. We are concerned about the language barrier but Ashan is not, and your references say you are picking up more of it all the time. The Elements had nothing to say in regards to anything we should be concerned about but I understand you will all live on your ship? Including your son?”

“Aye.” The Biqaj nodded after a moment, “Kes stay on for cold season. Live self rest season.”

“Oh, he is that much older?”

“Not to me.” Korva said with a fond smile, wondering if she should’ve asked before bringing another person on board but it was her ship and her word was final. As a sailor he’d learn that plus she had a feeling the two would get on relatively fine. Both were smart, mature, it made her proud already.

“Well, if theres still things you need to get arranged, we will have you finish finagling the paperwork and can shoot for picking up Ashan after dinner this evening?”

“If okay with Ashan, ya be ready?”

The girl bit her lip before nodding, Felicia smiled widely, “Excellent! Then you can go start packing and such while we finish this then Kamina will come pick you up.”

Before she had been nervous coming but now, instead of nerves there was impatience and excitement. She’d need a few more blankets and she’d need to up her selling to make sure she had enough to a kid too but those strangely were not her first worries or even concerns. All that mattered was that she could try and make Ashan happy and that the knot seemed to be unraveling in her heart just a little bit more.

“This is my bed—Sarah!—“ Ashan, distracted by another girl running past darted out of the room leaving only Korva and the manager who sighed a little then began packing for the girl, voice soft.

“I am surprised she agreed to go, to tell the truth.” An apologetic smile crossed her features, “That is not to say I did not want Ashan to be adopted, simply that given the circumstances in which you met and, well, that’s her brothers bed.”

The woman made a vague gesture to the cot a little ways down, the Biqaj stared at it, her vision growing strange while her body heated up. It felt as if her own body was beginning to burn, the flames licking at her sides, her fingertips, the acidic smell of burning hair settling in her nostrils. Korva could not have kept herself quiet if she wanted to, the vision of the boy from the tavern and blackened flesh with the whole bed burning and the sharp scream tore from her lips even as her gaze fell to the floor.

She had landed on the floor, clutching at her own chest while the manager hurried toward her, “Are you—“

“M’fine. Gotta catch my air,”
she said blearily, trying to fit together what had just happened, the burning had faded as quickly as it came to leave her breaking out in a cold sweat. The boy who plagued her for trials had been here. The same boy that had burned. Ashans—U’frek damn it all—it was Ashans brother. That bed. They’d kept the damned bed even if the mattress was different. Out of the corner of her eye she swore the flames flickered.

“I can’t simply take that for an answer! Did you—“

“Stubbed my toe. Ain’t a big deal.”
Korva smiled weakly, letting the other woman help her stand.

“St—stubbed your toe?”

“Aye, broke it back when, hurts bad if I hit it.”

“Oh, I—I see.”
She looked at the Biqaj strangely as if she wanted to say more or was even perhaps debating not adopting then shook her head wearily as she moved back to continue folding Ashans few clothes into a bag. “I think, hope actually, you two will get along just fine.”

“Is family now, ‘course we’re gonna.”
She licked her lips, “‘Bout ‘er brother—‘e—what ‘e like?”

“Asher? He was…like any boy though he liked his books even more than his sister, they were like twins and never far apart even if they weren’t actually twins.
” Her eyes filled and she looked away, “It broke everyones heart when the accident happened.”

The Biqaj blinked for a moment, digesting the fact that she was still calling it an accident after all they’d learned then nodded, accepting it. She had planned to take care of it herself anyway but now she’d have to deal with other facts. Once more she gaze at the bed, this time only briefly but this time, aside from the boy burning the ghost stood and watched too a strange expression on his face. But just like the flickering flames he was gone the moment she looked to the side.

The same burning sensation came and when it faded she felt even colder still. It was following her and it had cursed her. It was almost as bad as a damned Mer hunting her to do things she couldn’t do. With a wrinkle of her nose Korva pushed it to the side so she could take the bag from the manager.

“I ain’t gonna rush ‘er. Lemme take it to boat then come back.”

Here the loud laughter and what sounded like crying coming from various halls made both woman smile, the manager eyeing her as she nodded

“I agree. Do watch your toe on your way out.”

“Ya ready?”

“I—don’t know.”
The girl answered quietly, staring back at the orphanage strangely, “I’ve never lived anywhere else, at least, not that I can remember.”

“Mm, well ya gonna live with me for the rest.”

“I guess I am.”

“Ain’t gotta sound worried, got a boat.”

The girl blinked, “We’re going to live…on a boat?”

“Aye, Biqaj ain’t live nowhere else. ‘Cept Kes, he’s a land Biqaj.”

“Whats a land Biqaj and who is Kes?”

“Kes is yer brother.”
The silence that followed was sharp, scented with nothing but pain so Korva squeezed the girls hand, “If ya want ‘im. Land Biqaj is weird Biqaj who live on land and ain’t gotta boat.”

“Oh, thats…why do you need a boat?”

“To be closer to U’frek. Gotta stick where I love.”

As the girl digested the information, the reached the pier and the ship, Korva sighing in relief quietly. Cylus was too cold to wander around in and she wanted to see if Ashan liked the boat, better still if the girl couldn’t dislike it when she could hardly see it.

“Will I be able to see them again?” It was an abrupt, breathless question that she’d no doubt held in for most of the walk. But Korva kept silent while she helped the girl on board, noting with amusement her wide eyes at the suddenly unstable ground.

“Do ya wanna?”

“…yes?”

“It ain’t bad, they’re yer family too. I ain’t gonna make ya not see ‘em.”

“Really?”

The Biqaj grinned and ruffled the girls hair as she tugged her below the deck, “Aye now take a look see.”

Several seconds of horrified silence passed before Ashan breathed out in shock.

“It’s a mess!”

“Oi! Ya don’t gotta be insulting.”

“It’s not!”
Ashan protested, still in shock, “It’s fact.”

Korva snorted as she moved around to show Ashan where to put her things, mostly anywhere while the girl looked like she might go into cardiac arrest. Of course, this only made the Biqaj more inclined to ignore the mess in favor of letting the girl stayed riled and distracted from her worries while the woman herself left her own simmering in the back of her mind.
