“I wanted to thank you for bringing to my attention the previous matter.”
Korva eyes narrowed but she nodded it off, more interested in the girl sitting primly beside her. Whatever Felicia did, the Biqaj had her own mind about it after some research and digging there was plenty yet to be done. “Ain’t big deal.”
“It is to us.” That made her glance up, eyes meeting the managers before she let out an easy smile and shrugged in acceptance. Nodding now that that was out of the way, the manager made to continue, shuffling papers around. “Ashan has—“
“I’ll go with you.”
Felicia sigh lightly in the background, clearly exasperated with the two for constantly cutting her off but not saying anything else. Korva was too busy studying the girl to care, though she sat proper and her head was held high there was a wobble to her lips to match the nervous twitching of her hands. Her own lips twitched in response, she could appreciate the false strength. But she knew from experience kids didn’t like to be patronized and it was clear to her that Ashan had put a lot of thought into the decision even if it clearly made her terrified.
“Aye. We agreed,” Korva glanced to Felicia before continuing, “but ya gotta say bye. Ain’t gonna whisk ya away and yer still gonna see friends.”
The girls shoulders slumped in relief though she nodded as if she had been anticipating it all along and this time the Biqaj did not stop the amused smile from spreading. She turned herself fully to the manager.
“Your references checked out but since we didn’t actually fill out any paper—“
“Ain’t ready right trill.” The woman interrupted, “wasn’t know if she gonna say yes. Gotta get clothes and—“
“I’ve got my own clothes, I don’t want you picking mine!”
“Ashan!”
“But look at her!” The girl protested as Korva laughed, not offended. Most people took awhile to get used to Biqaj style even if she never wore the fancier adornments that her people liked.
“Aye, ain’t much wrong what she say.”
“Still,” Felicia said sternly, though her own gaze look askance at Korvas clothing often enough, “we don’t always have to say what’s on our mind to all of Idalos. And I did have some concerns about the language barrier—“
“Will teach, am learning more Common—”
“If I may finish?” That made the woman flush lightly, shooting Ashan a look as the child smothered a giggle behind her hand. “Thank you. We are concerned about the language barrier but Ashan is not, and your references say you are picking up more of it all the time. The Elements had nothing to say in regards to anything we should be concerned about but I understand you will all live on your ship? Including your son?”
“Aye.” The Biqaj nodded after a moment, “Kes stay on for cold season. Live self rest season.”
“Oh, he is that much older?”
“Not to me.” Korva said with a fond smile, wondering if she should’ve asked before bringing another person on board but it was her ship and her word was final. As a sailor he’d learn that plus she had a feeling the two would get on relatively fine. Both were smart, mature, it made her proud already.
“Well, if theres still things you need to get arranged, we will have you finish finagling the paperwork and can shoot for picking up Ashan after dinner this evening?”
“If okay with Ashan, ya be ready?”
The girl bit her lip before nodding, Felicia smiled widely, “Excellent! Then you can go start packing and such while we finish this then Kamina will come pick you up.”
Before she had been nervous coming but now, instead of nerves there was impatience and excitement. She’d need a few more blankets and she’d need to up her selling to make sure she had enough to a kid too but those strangely were not her first worries or even concerns. All that mattered was that she could try and make Ashan happy and that the knot seemed to be unraveling in her heart just a little bit more.
