[Isonomia] Relief Effort 5: Sleeping

1st Ashan, 718
2 Breaks Past Dawn
It had been a little while since she had pulled a man from the rubble. This man was the first man who had ever owned her, the one who had bought her from her parents. In truth, that experience had shaken Faith more than a little, but she didn't have time now to be worrying about it, thinking about it. So, as she always had, she put the thought in her pocket and the worry into her hands. There was too much to do and too many people who needed help for her to be fussing about something long past. There was no changing it, after all, so she might as well just get on with it. Looking at what they had done and what they still needed to do, Faith knew that the thing to do now, next on her list, was to arrange accommodation, albeit temporary accommodation, for the victims who had lived here. They would need to be re-homed, new houses and apartments built, but that would not happen yet. In the meantime, they needed to be able to sleep.

So, Faith made her way to speak to the harbormaster. The poor man must hate her by now, she thought.

"I need a warehouse, an empty one," she said with a smile and no preamble. He looked at her and sighed, almost giving up before he started to argue. "How long for?" Faith raised an eyebrow and considered. "While the rubble is being cleared, I want there to be no charge. But once the docks are up and working again we will pay." He looked at her as though expecting a punchline. "So, you don't want to just take it over and have no charge for it? This is progress!" Faith had the good grace to smile, ever so slightly and then she pointed out the obvious. "If this relief effort wasn't happening, these docks would be closed for a lot longer, yes? So, whilst it is true that you are not making money right now, we are working towards a goal which will see you doing so again." He rolled his eyes, ever so slightly. "You're too generous you are." But he and she were growing to understand and even like each other a little. He sighed, "come with me."

She didn't ask why, she simply walked with him. By now, they'd come to know each other well enough that she thought it would be worth her while to do so. So, they walked. Out of his office, which she had requisitioned for her use - it had been the first victim to this small, determined little woman who he didn't quite dare argue with. He led her then, to an area off towards the edge of the docks, but still close enough that it would be alright for what she wanted. There were two large warehouses, they'd be more than big enough for setting up the barracks style accommodation she wanted to. "They're both damaged, unusable and I've not got around to repairing them." He gestured to the two buildings. "You get your people on them, repair them to good order and you can have them. Once you've got out of my hair and off my docks, and you've got those people back into their homes, then I'll have saved money and you won't have spent as much as you would have on renting."

Faith looked at the two buildings, then at him and she pursed her lips. "We have access to your equipment and resources, just as we do for shoring up the existing damage?" He laughed and shook his head. "Do you want my coat off my back too?" Faith shook her head, seriously. "No, thank you. I have my own coat and don't feel the cold. Do we have a deal?" He nodded his head. "Aye, lass, we do." Pleased, Faith nodded. "Excellent. Thank you."

[Isonomia] Relief Effort 5: Sleeping

She had a place now where she could give people at least temporary accommodation. It wasn't ideal, but beds and blankets in there was better than neither of those things out in the weather. They could get the beds in there, give people a very basic level of privacy and that would be better than nothing. It wasn't ideal, it wasn't even good.

But it was better than nothing.

So, Faith needed to price up the items in question and accept that she was going to be spending money. But then, she considered, why was she worried about that? She already got discounts, or more precisely the faction did, so they would get what they needed for the correct and most frugal price. That was what the money was there for. So, she did the maths of what she needed, judging by the lists that she had and the space to go with that. Once she had that, she asked Skeet to fetch her the updated lists, just to check again and then, when she knew, that was what she did. It wasn't much, not much at all, but each person would have a bed, made with a sheet and a pillow and a warm quilt. It was all about proportion and ratio. They got more for their money this way and it was good enough. They had food which was basic but warming and filling and Faith didn't know what else she could do, in truth.

Or, she did, but she wouldn't do it. They could spend all the money on beautiful beds, things like that, but she had to prioritise things here. Anything which could save a life, even just one, she'd spend all the money on it if she had to - but the difference between a warm, comfortable and perfectly serviceable bed and a grand one? No. Not interested. She bought the beds and considered that, with those, she could set up the hostel she'd been thinking of. Beacon could become a lot bigger. More and more, she knew that soon she was going to have to make a stance against slavery here, start the process which had begun so long ago in a field in Andaris. Was that where it had begun, she wondered, and she knew it was not.

It was at the moment that Padraig opened the door to her. Smiling at the memory, she turned her attention back to what she was needing to do. Beds, bedding, that kind of thing, she could do. But she needed to think about this, too. Those people who were still trapped, they would need her to think of everything and so, she needed to get this done. Once she'd sent Skeet off to get things sorted, buy what she needed to, Faith turned her attention back to getting the warehouses fixed. She had, now, a list of what was needed and she nodded her head, happy that they'd be able to do that. It was just about assigning people and so, she got herself busy working out the quickest, most efficient rota.

Then, it was time to turn her attention once again to the dead.

[Isonomia] Relief Effort 5: Sleeping

Judging by the lists they had, there were anywhere between five hundred and a thousand people in there. Thus far, they'd pulled out some - some dead, some alive, but the numbers were nowhere near the final amount yet, she knew. And so she had to consider the dead. She'd arranged it, earlier, that there was a place for them to be taken and it should be big enough, at least for now. But Faith knew that they needed to take measures. Dead bodies rotted and both in the morgue and in the zone, they would need to make sure that things didn't get infected, diseases didn't spread.

Because, the reality was, the more of these things which weren't taken care of, the lower the number of survivors would be. Faith knew it, and so she had to work in order to maximize that number. Just before Skeet went to the market, Faith stopped her. "I need green sand. Lots of it. To keep the bodies cool. I also need sheets to cover them. Enough space between each one." Thinking about it, she considered. "I believe that one of the volunteers offered the use of a sloop? Take my bag, it's a domain bag, bottomless. Fill it with sand." Keeping the corpses cool would keep everyone here healthier. "Can you and will you do that, please?" Skeet nodded and then looked at Faith with a serious gaze.

"You know, Faith," Skeet said, softly. "I get that you have to look after the living and the dead. The old and the young, sick and injured, trapped and hungry, thirsty, short and those with a slight itch, but who looks after you?" Faith blinked at Skeet and stood, just for a few trill, staring in a rather bemused manner. "I look after me. My husband does." Faith would have to admit that the second sentence was more true than the first. Still.

"And honestly, I don't have time to discuss this. There are people injured, dead, dying and homeless. We aren't dealing with a slight itch here, we are dealing with husbands, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, wives being dead, hurt or missing. I will work as hard as I would if they were my people. What else would anyone ever do?" Skeet sighed. "I didn't mean," Faith put a hand on her arm and smiled. "I know. I know you mean well. But the time for this conversation is not now and when it is now, the person I will have it with will not be you."

Skeet suddenly grinned. "You know. You're just... Alright. Green sand!"

Faith watched Skeet run off and she made her way back to the office. As she did she considered Skeet's words. But at the end of the trial, she knew that she was doing what she would always do. Faith tried her best to be the best devotee of all the Immortals who were on the side of goodness. and morality, in her mind. She was born to serve, she knew that, and she served Famula, Moseke, Vri and all of those who worked for mortals and the whole of Idalos. Those who sought to enslave, impoverish and otherwise harm others, she would have to stand against. She couldn't simply be the person who thought it was wrong and did nothing. Skeet understood that, was part of the Isonomia faction. But equally, Faith understood, as she had once said to Padraig, she was a fanatic and a lunatic.

But right now, she was a fanatic and a lunatic with a very large job to do and so, she turned and got back to it. 622 words

[Isonomia] Relief Effort 5: Sleeping

Overview

Saving the world one body at a time. Just a day in the life of Saint Faith. I must commend not only her selflessness, her spirit of service that makes her keep pushing and pushing and pushing to save more lives and to give so much back to the community, as well as her restrain to not at least try to nibble off some of the dead just to see how they taste like. Enjoy your rewards.
