The third break past midnight.

That was the time, she knew, and Faith also knew that this was the time of night when everything felt most hopeless. When someone was ill, they were more likely to die at this time - Faith's obsession with finding patterns of diseases had caused her to consider many things and that was one. So, as Skeet came in, Faith took out the small sphere she had - it was about the size of a marble and it shone with sunlight. "Take this and give it to Roberta. Get as many lanterns and candles, lights of every description. If Padraig's there, ask him to use his Nalos mark." Skeet raised an eyebrow. "Chase away the darkness, Skeet. These people who are trapped, they have nothing to tell them where they are or what has happened. They need.... lanterns." Skeet took the marble, hanging in a small leather bag. Inside it, the marble was nestled in a delicate lace cover which Faith had made for it, a silk cord stemming from it. The marble shone, constantly, with sunlight. Skeet hung it around her neck and then she left.

"Alright, so we have the map and the best reports we can." Faith knew that, at this point they had all the information and now they needed to just organise it better. "We have three areas," just for a second she paused and Alissa looked at her with a raised eyebrow. Faith smiled to her self-proclaimed bodyguard. "Life, death and the in between. Moseke, Vri and Famula. Moseke in the field hospital, Vri in the morgue and Famula in the digging operation." Alissa looked at her and frowned slightly. "What? Why?"

Faith looked up and smiled a slight, tight smile. "Because people need someone to stand behind. At the moment, who's giving them a reason to live? To fight? To volunteer? If we have an identity, maybe that will help. We have to give those people reason to hope, and the ones looking for the ones that are still trapped, we have to give them energy." Alissa looked at her and shook her head. "You do." Faith's expression to that told, just for a brief moment, what she was feeling and the depths of her frustration. "Me? While we are talking here, people are dying and I am not out there helping!" She breathed in and sighed, "my apologies. I find it frustrating." Alissa nodded her head. "I understand. But you couldn't have helped me if you'd been cooking in Cally's. Or all the people like me who have lives because of you. The searchers are using your name, the healers are calling the tent 'Faith's', you have to accept that this is who you are. Sometimes, that's going to mean organising behind the scenes, but as long as you're seen, then that's the important thing."

Faith looked at Alissa and smiled. "And, right now, what I need to do is go and look at what's happening. What's needed, what's working what isn't. Then, I can put it right." Alissa smiled and nodded. "Come on then, lets do that."

And so, they went out. Faith, before they walked out of the office, breathed in and prayed to Moseke that she would do the right thing here, save as many lives as she could. In Moseke's name, they would heal the living, in Vri's they would honour and bury the dead and in Famula's they would search for those who were not yet found, and serve as well as they could. But to Moseke, she prayed that the stones would hold, there would be no more collapses and that all those here in this moment should live. If it was her will. And then, out they went. First, to go and look at the field hospital, as it was closest to the office (Faith refused to call it a Command Center, that was a silly name) and she was astonished at the work which had already been done. Looking around, though, she realised that there was a more efficient way to do at least one thing and, as they walked through there - quickly, not dawdling, they didn't have time, she grabbed one of the green cloaks. "Go and speak to the Harbourmaster. Tell him we need all the salt buoy plants there are, then get five strong dockworkers to keep you in a steady supply of water that has been treated with those. They clean it." It would save the carting of water back and forth, no doubt. The green cloak nodded.

The hospital, under the care of Galena, the white cloaked head of the Order of the Adunih on Scalvoris was in as good a shape as it could be three breaks in. No doubt, she told Faith, the transport had made a major difference. Faith felt a swell of pleasure at that and reassured Galena that they had, at the moment, seven hundred dock workers and various other volunteers. Whatever they needed, Faith would get it for them, if it was within her power. Galena didn't doubt that and, more than that, the white cloak who had once been Faith's mentor here was starting to think that there was nothing the earnest young woman couldn't do.

Then, they made their way to the area where the disaster itself had happened. Where the buildings had collapsed and the dead and dying were trapped. All of the people in there were one of those two, there was no doubting it. Faith frowned as she looked around at what was here. One of the relief volunteers, a dock-worker by trade, was nearby and she turned away from Alissa and walked over to him. Alissa for her part, sighed and remained close to Faith. "Excuse me," Faith said, softly, "I wonder if you can help me find out how to make this easier for you." There followed a conversation about what was hard, what was impossible and what made the job more difficult, what would help. After the five bits or so, Faith nodded, "You've been incredibly helpful, thank you."

Then, she turned back to Alissa and they made their way back to the Office. "I need to sit to do this," she said and then she bowed her head in prayer to Moseke. After a few moments, in front of her appeared a small glowing sprite. Alissa looked at her, and it, and her eyebrows raised, but Faith ignored her. "Hello. I'm sorry to disturb you but there's been a dreadful accident and people are trapped. Under stone and rubble. And there are hundreds, literally hundreds of people looking for them, but it's dark. Please, will you help to find them and then lead someone to them?" The sprite looked at her and a deep frown crossed it's capricious face. "Why?"

"Because you are of Moseke?" Faith asked and it shook its head. Faith looked at it, one eyebrow raised. "What would you like?" She asked and it considered, tiny floating hand cupping tiny chin. "Two stories, three grapes and two drops of thrice marked blood." Faith's expression was hard to read for a moment. Then she spoke again, "One story, one drop of blood. For each person you find and is then saved, you get a grape. For every three grapes you can have another story, every five, another drop of blood." This was insane, but there it was. The sprite considered, fluttering in front of her and then it responded.

"Two grapes for a story, four for a drop of blood." Faith narrowed her eyes and nodded. "Deal. Thank you." The small creature flew out and Faith watched it with an expression which told of her confusion and almost-but-not-quite amusement. Alissa looked absolutely flabbergasted. "Did you just... how did you... never mind." That brought a smile to Faith's face and she shook her head. "You're probably happier not knowing. Now. I need whistles and masks."

Alissa looked at Faith and sighed slightly. "Whistles and masks?" Faith nodded. "Whistles, if there's a problem, then having a means of making a loud noise is a very good thing. Masks, to protect against the dust. Every volunteer needs a whistle or some means of making a loud noise, on a string around their next. Glowstones, too, if we can get them. At dawn, I want Skeet in the market." Alissa looked at her and nodded, but then Faith changed her mind. "No. I'll go. Or if we can bring the relevant stall holders here? That might be best. Can we do that?" Alissa considered and then agreed that yes, that was most likely probable. Faith breathed in and decided to hold that in her pocket for a moment. The next few breaks were vital and she didn't want to waste any of them.

"Whistles, they will be more difficult. But the Elements use them, the Earth troops. Get the highest ranking one here, please?" Alissa shook her head "I don't leave your side," she said and Faith turned to her with a very determined expression. "Please. Go and get the land troop. I am away from my babies and my husband and people are dying. We need different priorities. Now." Alissa looked at her in surprise and Faith gave a gentle, but very firm smile. "You think Cally's just happened? Beacon grew from nowhere? Everyone does not do what I want them to do and I have had to fight for every step we've taken. This is another step. Please, go." Alissa nodded and exited the small office which had become hers. Once she'd gone, Faith sighed a deep and shuddering sigh. "I don't know that I'm strong enough to be what they need," she whispered in prayer. "So I ask you, blessed Famula, for my soul to be as strong as I hope it is, beloved Moseke for the strength to heal and nurture life and lord Vri, I beg your strength to deal with the dead and the sorrow of the living."

She remained in prayer only for a few trill, for that was all the time she had and then she got back to the organising. After a few moments, Alissa came back in with one of the Land Troops. A woman (of course) who looked concerned that something was even more wrong. "Thank you, thank you so much for coming, I appreciate it," Faith said. "You use whistles, yes? To communicate one to the other, especially the land troops?" The woman nodded, in absolute confusion. "Excellent. I need them. Your numbers have just halved, I need whistles and any glowstones or other such thing that you have. I need to requisition them and now." The land troop, for such she was, looked at Faith and for a few trill she said nothing. "Maybe if you write it down, ma'am? I'll take it to my superior officer."

"That's excellent. Thank you. I'll do that, please have a seat." That was better. Much better. Right. She wrote the letter. Whistles, glowstones or any other thing given to troops. She requested them for the next 6 trials, when they would be returned and any losses she would cover the cost of. Because, Faith realised, with half or more of the Elements being held, there were resources going without being used. She couldn't and hadn't asked for troops because they were so short staffed, but the resources? Well she was sure that they would do that. Furthermore, if the organising of it was an issue, due to their current staffing, all she needed was the authority and she'd send five people to organise it. She handed the letter to the woman and smiled. "Thank you. Please come back as soon as you know? Thank you."

Comments

This whole plot is quite the undertaking and I commend you for it! I enjoyed seeing that, even though Faith is so strong and formidable, she is still very much human and feels all of the emotions that anyone might in a stressful situation. I'm glad that she isn't just some calm and collected badass that can handle every single situation with ease, but that you play off of her skills and portray her like an actual person. I also enjoyed the little exchange between Faith and the spirit. Greedy little thing.
