The Show Must Go On

24th Zi'da, 717
Faith had an appointment in the Order of the Adunih that afternoon. It was her regular check up with Galena on the progression of her pregnancy. She made her way there, walking with Cyrus and Katie. Padraig's grandfather had insisted on coming to each and every check up, not arguing, just always somehow being there. Faith had stopped telling him that he really didn't need to, because he looked at her, smiled and replied with 'I know', and then came anyway. She didn't know what she'd have done without him the last nineteen trials and, come to that, the ones before too. So, she held on to his arm and they walked.

Scalvoris Town was warmer than most of the island, but it was still freezing cold, the winds were whipping and snow storms were more than common. Snow was drifting, in places taller than the diminutive young woman and Faith breathed in as she watched a flake tumble down in front of her. Like it had, over an arc ago, in Andaris. Standing outside Tristan Venora's house, confused and afraid, Faith had watched that snowflake and had known as she did so where she would go. Please Vri, she prayed, please let him be safe. She couldn't even begin to think about him not being and, even as she considered it in an entirely abstract way a wave of nausea hit her. Faith was good at hiding such things and she did her best, but Cyrus had this strange sixth sense, she thought, which allowed him to realise. He stopped, Faith looked up him and she shook her head. "I'm fine, just a little nausea is all."

Cyrus said nothing, just waited for it to pass and Faith sighed. "You are a truly unreasonable man, you know," he looked at her with a very calm and dry expression. "Am I? Well, I'm probably too old to change." She smiled and shook her head, but didn't argue with him. There was no point. He'd done what she could only describe as taken care of her since Padraig left. Katie had fussed and made a fuss and done a lot, but Cyrus had been a rock.

The Show Must Go On

Although, Faith had to admit it, she got really irritated when people spoke to him rather than her. Galena had asked Cyrus how often Faith was being sick and the young human woman was about to get shirty when Cyrus replied, telling Galena that he thought Faith was probably the best person to answer that. She smiled at him gratefully, well aware that he could have answered it for her. Then, however, she turned her attention to Galena and answered. "It doesn't seem to have a pattern," she explained, genuinely believing what she said. "I feel nauseous all the time, lately. Just the thought of food is enough, sometimes. But I keep eating small, dry, plain food. Sometimes I keep it down." Galena glanced at Cyrus, whose expression was impassive, as ever.

"The baby is fine, you're growing just how I'd expect, so my worry is you," Galena explained. "The body is a wonderful thing, it will prioritise and right now it's prioritising the baby. Which means you are suffering more than you would if you were experiencing this and not pregnant." And considering how slight Faith was at the best of times, Galena was very much of the opinion that the young woman needed to be fed more, not less. Faith looked at her mentor and said, most earnestly, "I'm doing my best, I promise you." Cyrus put a hand on Faith's shoulder and nodded. He didn't say anything, but his point was very clearly stated nonetheless; the girl was doing her best.

"Well, I'm afraid I'm going to have to suggest that you have house rest from now on, until you're a little stronger." Galena know how much Faith would not want that and it showed in the young woman's response to Galena's suggestion. "My concern," Galena continued, "is that you are more likely to pass out, which in and of itself can be very damaging. Until you're keeping your food down, Faith, I'm afraid that's my suggestion. I'll come out to you for your checkups from now on." Faith sighed slightly, but she nodded her head.

"But the baby. Bun, is alright? Developing well?" Faith asked with a tinge of concern and Galena nodded. "You are growing and growing. Your baby is fine." Faith sighed in relief and Galena added, "but Faith, you know this as well as I do. The healthier the mother, the better for the child. You must rest and keep eating what you can." Faith nodded, not doubting it for a moment. "Katie is getting soup and dry crackers, ginger snap and other things like that from Cally's. Jo'quet is making them for me."

Katie nodded her agreement. "It doesn't help that Faith isn't sleeping well, either." Faith glanced at the 'glittermonster' and she smiled. Katie and Cyrus were concerned, they acted out of love and Faith knew that. But by every Immortal, she just wanted Padraig to be here. "Well," Galena replied with a smile and a nod, "that is very common by this stage. You're not comfortable?" Faith shook her head. No matter what position she slept in, she wasn't comfortable, she explained. Also, Bun seemed to wake up as soon as Faith lay down and that combined with cramps in her legs and toes and she was not sleeping well. Galena nodded. "House rest. Sitting as much as you can. Raise your legs where possible, sleep when you can. But eat. Little and often, tiny amounts and almost all the time. Fluids. Lots of fluids."

Faith nodded. For herself, she'd argue, or ignore things. But for Bun, there was nothing that was too much trouble. "There are two things I need to do before that," she said and Galena looked ready to argue and Faith raised a hand. "One can be done here, the other at Luna's Dream." Galena pursed her lips but said no more, since Luna's was literally somewhere Faith was going to walk past and she couldn't really argue with her doing something here. Unless, of course, it was strenuous. "Alright, I'll bite. What is it?"

The Show Must Go On

Faith reached for her bag, then asked Cyrus if he'd get the blue bag from it. He did with a smile and handed it to Galena, sliding it across the table to her. Faith said nothing as her mentor opened the bag, looked at the contents and then raised an eyebrow. Galena's expression showed her surprise at the contents of the bag, and Faith started to explain. "Cally's had startup costs, which I funded. Now that it has paid those, and we have the facilities that we wanted, then I can start donating from the profits each season." Galena shook her head, some surprise at the young woman. "Faith, you set up the orphanage, didn't you?"

"Yes," Faith replied, "and that will be getting a larger donation. That is one thousand, five hundred gold nell. I allow myself a wage, I'm not prepared to live on the profits of a business. The vision I had, I still have, is that we eradicate poverty. We don't do that by hoarding. So, I take a wage, and a good one. But I need to drop the money off to Luna's too." Galena looked at the young woman and she smiled. "Thank you, really."

Faith shook her head. There was no thanks needed, not from her. The Order of the Adunih provided care to the people of Scalvoris. It was a place where people could go and get help and support; it had to be funded and in order for that to happen, it had to have donations. It was her duty, as Faith saw it. Cyrus watched her with impassive eyes, not saying anything although Katie had already been clear; she didn't see why all the good that Cally's did wasn't enough. Surely, now that it was enjoying success, it should be something that Faith allowed herself to simply keep the profits from. As far as Katie was concerned, the sheer amount of good the place did, the farm and the vineyard and the accommodation for the trainees as well as the orphanage? All of that added up to more than sufficient and Faith should keep her gold. Evidently, Faith felt differently and like so many things, there was no moving her on it. For a former slave, she could be a very stubborn woman when she put her mind to it.

So, once they'd asked Galena a few more questions, about when Galena thought the baby would be born (beginning of Cylus remained her response), how many she thought were in there (impossible to tell, but that was a lot of bump for a small person) to chatting over plans for the birth, they made their way out. Then, slowly, they started their walk home.

Stopping on the way, they went into Luna's. The orphanage Faith had set up from the profits made by Cally's meant that they were truly providing for everyone, as far as she could see. She had no intention of stopping doing good and that was what she would always do her best to achieve. So, the orphanage was a beautiful, happy place and was focused on caring for the children there. When they went in, they were shown into the office where they spoke to Felicia, the manageress. Faith handed over the donation and the young mixed race manageress was frankly delighted. There were questions, there, too, but these were from Faith. Numbers, volunteers, any issues or concerns? Felicia answered, she had a lot of information and after a brief while, Cyrus intervened. "We should think about getting home, Faith." The older Augustin said and Faith looked at him and sighed, inwardly.

Not because he'd said it, but because he was right. She nodded her head. "Anything you need. I'm under house arrest at the moment," she put her hand on her stomach and smiled to Felicia who nodded and assured Faith that she would call in if there was anything urgent. Cyrus looked at the manageress, not saying anything but his glance gave him enough information ~ Felicia wouldn't be popping in if someone burned the toast. That was fine. Genuine emergencies, he understood. Anything else, no. So, that done, they made their way back home.
