[Viden Academy: Scalvoris Campus] The Next Level

Education Ledger
"The next level of medicine is to consider how we might change what we understand the boundaries of medicine itself to be." Faith looked at the essay title they had been given by Professor Carter and frowned. It was not a look of displeasure on her face so much as determination to do this right. As always, the earnest young woman felt that she had to do this to the best of her ability and so she lowered her head to make some notes. After all, this was done in Famula's name and with devotion to Famula , Moseke and Vri. Life and death and the in between must be served and she would do so to the best of her ability.

The Charter group was four students, including her, so they were sitting in Professor Carters office. It was a small room with a portable chalkboard and comfortable chairs. His office was bigger than Padraig's, Faith considered, but then he was the Head of the Medicine Department. He had given them this title as the introduction to their charter level studies and Faith was busy underlining it and annotating it in her own notes.

She had a list of questions which she knew she would have to address before she started writing. Her notes were there to remind her, neat and clear.
"The next level of medicine is to consider how we might change what we understand the boundaries of medicine itself to be." next level: To determine the next level, we must know what level we are at. The next level = Charter? I don't think so. The next level = progress? To progress? medicine: How are we defining this? The study? The practice? The scientific pushing of boundaries? Do we wish to consider the very term itself? What is medicine currently? (link with of medicine itself) - is it prevention as well as cure? It is crafting antidotes? consider: To think about, to ruminate on. Is medicine this? No. It is action and the study of reaction, surely? To consider is an academic exercise not faced in reality. we: We as students? We as medical practitioners? Mortals with a desire to help others? Who is we? Parameters. might : Should? Must? Bring morality into the question here? It makes it sound like 'we might have a cup of coffee' - is it simple choice? change: Change in and of itself is not good nor bad. Change in what way? For what purpose? What kind of change? Who changes? understand: quantify? How does one measure understanding? To understand something is not to do anything with that understanding. boundaries: Self imposed? What are these? How are we defining them? Are there universal boundaries or does medicine change from one place, one race to another? Big term.
Professor Carter leaned over and looked at Faith's notes. Sitting back he smiled, then addressed them all. "So, now that we are studying at this level means that you must consider what you are writing, why you are writing it. What argument you are making and how it will impact your work." Serious nods from them all at that and so Professor Carter sat back and looked at them.

"Individually, consider that essay title. Look at it, examine it. Give me key words and questions and then a critique of the title." He then smiled at each of the four, before continuing. "Come up with an alternative essay title and, if you have time in the one break I am giving you, tell me why essay writing at this level is an exercise in futility." He motioned for them to go and begin and they did.

[Viden Academy: Scalvoris Campus] The Next Level

She thought that she had already written key words and questions, so Faith moved on to a critique of the title. The other students took the time to go to the canteen, with the intention of getting a hot drink while they work, but Faith stayed where she was. Professor Carter moved to behind his desk and picked up some papers which he was grading. That caused Faith to raise her head and she asked, immediately, "Oh, Professor, I'm sorry. Would you like me to leave?"

"On the contrary, it's nice to have quiet company. Feel free to stay." Faith smiled at Professor Carter's words and considered that they were very true. Padraig, had he been in his office a few doors down, would undoubtedly agree. Faith smiled and thanked the Professor and lowered her head back to her work, again utilising coloured pencils to make certain parts stand out. It was the only way that she could keep things as tidy as she wanted them to be.
"The next level of medicine is to consider how we might change what we understand the boundaries of medicine itself to be." Critique of Title
Positive Point - Critical Point

Clarity - a number of words which can be read in a variety of ways. Words which are open to interpretation are, by definition, open to misinterpretation, also.

Clarity - by definition this allows the student to take this down their own interpretation. Rather than producing regurgitated factual accounts, the use of deliberately (I assume) unclear words allows us to put the stance on it we want.

Focus -it is very broad, running the risk of promoting a 'breadth without depth' approach.

Focus - in saying that, it allows the student to focus on their charter specialism or, if they wish to, an appropriate side-subject. It also requires the student to define their terms - rather than having them defined. That forces focus.
Alternative Title
"Write an essay on a topic related to medicine which is appropriate for a student at Charter level" Essay Writing @ Charter
I would argue that essay writing is futile for students of medicine at any level.

Critical Points
Skills - practical skills necessary (writing about tying a tourniquet does not teach you how to do so)
Resources - essays are written over time - medicine is often immediate
Relevance - it does not demonstrate any application of knowledge required to be a good doctor
Measurement - it does not measure anything relevant to medicine
Worth - it is an academic exercise, focused on academic achievements, is it merely to maintain the illusion that medicine is a prestigious profession.

Positive Point
Skills - better to have some knowledge, albeit academic. To attempt to tie a tourniquet without any knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Resources - medicine requires that you research and learn constantly. Using appropriate sources.
Relevance - report writing and keeping meticulous notes is entirely relevant to medicine.
Measurement - it measures the ability to take knowledge and synthesize it. That is a necessary skill
Worth - it is an academic exercise, focused on academic achievements, is it merely to maintain the illusion that medicine is a prestigious profession. But that is acceptable, because it is. There is no greater profession and we should be held to the highest standards.
Faith lifted her head as the other students came in and she smiled at them. "Just passed by your boyfriend's office," Elaine whispered to her and Faith looked at her fellow student and could not hide the pleasure in her face. "He's dishy," Elaine added and Faith lowered her head. Her classmates were intrigued by her engagement to a professor and her forthcoming wedding was a cause of a lot of questions. Of course, not many answers were forthcoming, but that really didn't seem to put them off trying.

"Alright, then. Faith's love life notwithstanding," Faith squirmed in her seat as Professor Carter said that and he smiled kindly, "Let's discuss, shall we? Your notes, please."

[Viden Academy: Scalvoris Campus] The Next Level

It was intriguing, the way that they learned during the Charter and Faith already loved it. It was much more informal and intimate. The four of them and the professor meant that she was less likely to be overcome by shyness, which was still something that Faith struggled with. Less so, though, this season. During her Diploma she had done very well in Professor Carter's classes, but far less so in Professor Hamilton-Smith's; circumstances had led to her work having to be re-graded and it seemed that Professor Hamilton-Smith had consistently singled her out and graded her unfairly and incorrectly.

Faith had learned a lot from that experience. When Padraig had raised it with her as a possibility, she had not wanted to believe it, but it had happened. Now, though, she was studying at the same level as Professor Hamilton-Smith, albeit that he was in his third season and her the first. So, Professor Carter was her professor and for that she was very grateful.

They weren't far in to the season, but already her work was coming back and she was doing very well. Faith couldn't deny that she felt more confident in her ability as a student, although she was going to have to teach another session this season, this time to medicine students in the second season of study; she had to admit that she was worried that she was going to be faced with a group who all knew more than her.

Right now, though, they were discussing their answers and the four of them had explained their viewpoints on the essay title whilst Professor Carter listened. They'd moved on, though, to the consideration of essay writing and it's relevance to the study of medicine. The other students had agreed that it was a futile endeavor and Professor Carter seemed to agree with them. However, he was an astute man and he looked at Faith with a raised eyebrow. "You believe differently, Faith?"

"I do, Professor. I did not, but I do following this exercise." Professor Carter looked at her and urged her to continue. "It requires discipline, focus and a willingness to attend to details. These are all things which we need to do as medics. It is an academic exercise, but the thought of a doctor practicing without knowledge is a terrifying one. We have to have a means of measuring that and, if it is not via this route, then what is it?" Faith looked at Professor Carter and she shrugged slightly, "I am not saying that academic study makes a good doctor, but without it we would have uneducated and unregulated ones and that is a terrifying prospect. It is not an ideal option, but with those I see, it is the best one."

Professor Carter sat back and looked at her with a smile. "Interesting points, Faith. I'd like you all to consider a list of pros and cons regarding academic study of medicine, apply them to case studies. Now, specialisms. I need to organise your supervision. Faith, there's no mentor next to your name?"

"I don't have one, Professor." Faith replied with a smile. She seemed remarkably unconcerned, professor Carter thought.

"Are you anxious about that?" Most students would be, he thought, but then Faith did exactly what he expected of her; she exhibited her usual contrary behaviour and shook her head. He smiled and waited to hear why.

"If there is no mentor for what I am specialising in, then it means that I have identified a gap in our provision. That means that my specialism will allow me to improve the lifestyle and life chances of the people of Scalvoris and, of course, Idalos." Faith was in no doubt, there was an absolute paucity of people willing to work with the dead and dying and her specialism, of incurable diseases was done in service to the people of Scalvoris, as had been instructed to her by Famula. Famula told her to serve and serve the devoted young woman would. She could have chosen any specialism, but it made sense to her that she filled a gap, rather than maintained a sense of security.

The bell rang and it was time to collect their things. Faith did so and bade Professor Carter, and her classmates her usual solemn good trial before she went to the library. It was where she spent her lunch times when she did not meet with Padraig and he was currently on the Immortals' Tongue. Tomorrow, though, they had to submit a proposal for their first research paper, and she had needed to finish it.

It coincided, her first deadline for her specialism, with the progress she had made in her study of the Rot, the currently incurable disease which was affecting her friend, Nir'wei. Faith believed that she was ready to start experimenting with the treatment regime she had produced. It was after painstaking research and a lot of very obscure information that she believed, finally, she was ready. So, her plan was to infect some rats with it and then treat them. However, she wanted to do that in conditions which were as controlled as possible, as she ran the risk of infecting herself if she was careless.

So, Faith had decided, that was the proposal she was putting forward. Now that it was pretty much finished, she just wanted to run through it one more time and make sure that she was fully prepared for the supervisory meeting tomorrow where she would be told yes or no to her studies.
