There was always so much to do, but Faith was as focused and determined as ever; however she was fairly sure that this was impossible. Still, impossible was achievable and she knew that. The young woman had, after all, told the Immortal Karem as much when asked and she firmly believed it. Nothing was impossible.
Looking down at the hafrein meat, Faith considered that somewhere, somehow, one of the Immortals was chuckling at her words that trial. Because making something edible out of this beast was more or less, as far as she could tell, impossible. Yet that was what she had to do. Cally's had been hired out for a birthday party, for a man who was celebrating his 100th birthtrial. He remembered how his mother had cooked Hafrein for him as a child and that was what he wanted for his celebration.
That was fine, but the thing was all muscle and gristle. Faith had never worked with meat so hard and difficult and the elderly man, named Theo, was quite clear. Hafrein in the entree and hafrein in the main course. At least she should be grateful, Faith considered; there wasn't any hafrein in the dessert.
Before she could do anything with this meat, Faith needed to understand it and so, whilst Padraig was off on an expedition with the University and she had this time to herself, Faith was determined to work out how to make this meat edible. It was half goat and goat in itself was notoriously difficult to cook to any kind of reasonable, although she could do so without problem. Yet this? This made goat look easy.
"It seems more complicated than we are used to, and that is saying something." Jo'get, her sous chef spoke and Faith couldn't help but smile.
"We'll sort it, no doubt. He wants us to cook it and so we will do. It's just a shame he has no teeth." Faith smiled at her sous chef who gave a brief but genuine smile back. "So, we have to cook it slowly, that will allow us to make it tender and tasteful. However, the problem with that is that it often overwhelms the flavour. Slow, but accentuating the taste." That was what they were aiming for, anyhow, but first they had to work out what the flavour of this creature was.
"Usually, that is because of over spicing, yes?" Jo'get asked and Faith nodded. "So," Jo'get mused, "we will be cooking it without any spices first to determine the flavour?" Faith smiled at the young woman and nodded. That was, she confirmed, the way to start.
