3 Cylus 721
"Serenity Garden." Balthazar said simply as he looked out at the waves crashing into the ship. He could see the Sentry from where they were out at sea because of his mutations inverting his vision but they weren't going towards the Sentry. "A few of the refugees knew about the garden before the collapse. I'd heard about it but never been. The current hope is that we'll be able to disembark the ship somewhere near the garden without having to walk through much of the Badlands." Balthazar explained. Nimue seemed a little disappointed at the notion they they'd be avoiding as much of the Badlands as possible but it was only for the beginning. Even if Nimue was too short sighted to see it, Balthazar knew they would have to learn to conquer whatever the island threw at them.
Saoire's words lingered in the back of Balthazar's mind. They'd been haunting him ever since he stepped onto the ship after speaking to her and Faldrass with Darius. "A leader knows not just how to solve a problem, but how to teach their followers to solve their problems for themselves." He couldn't solve every problem the settlers had. He needed to help them learn to survive independently of him. He had time but the task before him seemed more daunting than fighting any war had. Fighting in a war as a quick solution. He saw a target and he destroyed it. That was the end of the issue for him most of the time. It was the same with cases. He brought the criminal to the Elements, and the job was done. This was different. He would not build a house and leave the settlers to live inside it.
He needed to do more. He needed to lead... and he needed to know they were willing to follow him. Faldrass spoke of a trial coming to the settlers and Balthazar couldn't help but worry about what awaited them back on the island. He thought about Saoire's offer and how he would inevitably visit her academy on the island. His greatest shortcoming had always been his teaching. He had incredible skills and had learned to do amazing things, but he was terrible at passing his knowledge on to others. Elisabeth was learning but it was only because they were spending so much time practicing. If Saoire could help him become the leader his people needed, he would turn to her. "Serenity Garden... sounds awful. What is it?" Nimue asked, making a face like someone who'd smelled an unpleasant odor. Balthazar grinned and shook his head slightly.
"It's not much better than it sounds. It's a... garden on the west end of the island with tall trees and a few places to sit- or at least it was before the eruption. We'll have to see how much of it survived when we get there." Balthazar explained causing Nimue to groan. "The natives said that there were great views all around. I figure we can set up at the entrance to the garden and build east of it."
You'll run into the Badlands. Fuego's voice chimed in Balthazar's head as the flaming rock sat down on the railing next Balthazar.
"We will figure out where to go from there but if the garden isn't destroyed, it may be nice to have somewhere for workers to rest while we build."
"Build?" Nimue said it like it was a poisonous word, "And how are you gonna do that? You buying all these people houses?" Balthazar laughed once and shook his head before turning to face the ghost beside him.
"Well I'm hoping to get them all to contribute but I'll do what I must. You know I live a rather expense free life." Balthazar said, unsure of why he was trying to win Nimue over. He knew she wouldn't ever really approve of staying but so long as it kept her around, she'd do it... for now. Things had grown more and more tense since Yeva was resurrected. Nimue wanted things Balthazar could not give her and as time dragged on it seemed like she was beginning to blame him for it. It didn't matter, for the moment. All that mattered was getting these people settled, and so that is what Balthazar would do.
