Ïtọju
The Ïtọju, Xanthean for ‘twin’, are two Chieja Oludibo trees - some of the few Chieja Oludibo trees that the locals will reveal the identities of, if only because they are under constant surveillance of nearly the entirety of Desnind, due to its close proximity to the city.
The Ïtọju are the entrance and exit to the city, as well as one of the few transportation methods to the upper levels of Desnind, held above the ground, among the branches and trunks of the trees which constitute the city. However, because Desnind, although welcoming, is not keen to allowing simply anyone who walks through the forest into the more sacred parts of the city, and because the Chieja Oludibo trees are sacred, the pathway to the upper levels is not so obvious as to be a tunnel within a hollow tree, or steps carved into its side. Although not technically restricted or hidden, the pathway to the higher levels of the city is not wholly advertised. Taking the form of a mossy rope ladder, by and large camouflaged into the tree, only those who pay close attention or are ushered towards it will be able to find it. For locals or those who have established themselves not to be threats to the city as a whole, above the canopy exist a system of pulleys and rudimentary elevators that can be manually lowered or called down by those who have made themselves familiar with the locals.
If one does not find the pathway to the upper levels of Desnind and instead walks through the trees, they will find their feet following a dirt path into the ground level of Desnind, a bustling market center where locals, travelers, merchants, traders, and pilgrims go about a daily hustle. Very few homes exist on the forest floor, held, in bulk, within the leaves above. An unobservant traveler could walk every road in Desnind without realizing that they had only explored roughly 5% of the city, and that the majority of it existed above their heads.
