[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

10 Ashan 711
Valeria had thought that there could be nothing worse than the long travel necessitated by Burhan's awkward position within Rynmere. When she'd visited Umberidge in Gawyne the previous Zi'da, she'd thought that she might die of boredom or exhaustion after her long carriage ride. In hindsight, such tiring travel was far preferable to sitting and waiting to receive guests. The blonde had been cursed with an excess of energy that made it difficult for her to do anything at all. For trials before the arrival of the Kromes, she'd had difficulty sleeping as a result of her eager anticipation, difficulty sitting still or concentrating on her studies. She was inclined to wriggle, pace or sing to herself, her hyperactivity enough to earn more than one irritable snap from her family members and her tutors. There was no calming her and the teenager couldn't successfully restrain herself either, or at least not for long.

When the long awaited day finally arrived, it took more than a little coaxing to get her to take breakfast. It was enough to bring her under the scrutiny of both of her parents as well as Ulyna, who exchanged anxious looks while the tutor tried to coerce her into eating.

"Please, Valeria. You need to eat something. You don't want to be concerned about eating when the guests arrive," Ulyna pointed out, nudging the plate of fruit segments closer to the girl, who waved them off vehemently.

"I've told you that I'm not hungry, Ulyna. Besides, I'm sure you're going to offer the Kromes something to eat; I can eat then," she countered, her eyes a mixture of honey and steel as she warred between triumph and irritation at the other woman's persistence.

The other gave a brittle smile, pushing the plate nearer again, appearing ready to raise one of the fruit pieces to her charge's mouth. "Of course, they're going to be offered food after their journey but don't you think it would look strange if you seemed eager to eat when they arrived? They'll think that you're being starved. Now be a good girl and just-"

"Don't treat me like a child!" Valeria snapped, shoving the plate away with such violence that it almost fell off the table into her tutor's lap, Ulyna's hand jerking back in time to stop its topple.

"Ly'oat, don't be childish," her mother interjected, Rakahi Pidgin colouring her speech. "Please don't be like this, Val'bo," the Baroness almost begged from across the table, her eyes a kaleidoscope of colour as the full spectrum seemed to swirl in her irises.

The teenager turned on her mother, her gaze a violent mixture of violet and quicksilver. "I'm not being childish, you're all just being ridiculous!"

"Don't speak to your mother that way," Ulyna hissed, clearly ready to say more on the matter although she was quickly silenced by the imperiously raised hand of the Baroness. Apparently, Valeria had permission to speak.

Taking a deep breath, the blonde straightened her pink dress. "I'm not refusing to eat in the way that I did before. I've explained that I'm beyond that now. Ulyna has watched me. She's watched me eat, she's seen that I haven't made myself throw it up and its been that way for nigh on an arc! I'm too anxious to eat right now, sick with nerves and trying to force me to eat won't do any good. I'm not falling into my old ways and I think it's reasonable to expect you to trust me at this point," she forced herself to explain calmly, exhibiting some self-discipline by not allowing herself to fly off the handle, especially as her eyes clearly showed that she wasn't as calm as she made herself appear.

She stood, smoothing the skirt of her knee-length dress. "May myself and Ulyna now be excused so I can prepare myself for our guests, my Baroness?" she asked formally, eyes flicking to the fruit on the table afterwards. "And mayhaps Ulyna can bring the fruit?"

She watched the Biqaj woman deliberate, exchanging a look with her husband, before she rose gravely and signalled that her daughter could depart. The blonde stepped out of range of the table and the chair she'd just vacated and curtseyed gracefully. "Thank you, my Lady." The Baroness inclined her head in recognition and the young Burhan left with her tutor in tow.

A break later, Ulyna was removing the warm rags from her hair, carefully loosening the freshly made curls and ringlets to cascade over her shoulders. Valeria had managed to nibble away at the fruit without her stomach rebelling although it seemed to be full of butterflies in anticipation of the arrival of the young lady who would be arriving with Baron and Baroness Krome. The elder Kromes were visiting to discuss some trade deal or other, politics that were considered outside the young Lady's purview, but that didn't mean that she couldn't have some political uses of her own. That's where Velaine Krome came in.

The Lady would be visiting with her parents and she too would be excluded by talks of trade. As such, it fell to Valeria to entertain the other young woman, a great responsibility considering that Velaine might prove an important future ally for the heir to the Barony. It meant that there was a certain amount of pressure upon her but she was more excited than anything else. Given how cut off Burhan was from other places, she was always thrilled to have some new company as it added some interest to a landscape that had grown rather monotonous to her, especially over the past few arcs.

A knock on the door signalled the arrival of a maid who curtseyed before she announced that the Kromes were here. It brought a new flurry of energy to the pair as Ulyna listed off a number of etiquette reminders as she checked that the noblewoman was properly presentable before she ushered her downstairs.

"Don't forget to greet them appropriately and remember to curtsey-"

"I know, Ulyna, I know."

"-and show the appropriate amount of respect to your parents unlike you did earlier-"

"Yes, Ulyna, I'm perfectly capable of-"

"-and by the Seven, don't interrupt anyone!"

The teenager stopped, turning to her tutor and laying her hands on her lily-white hands on the other woman's shoulders. She flashed one of her easy smiles.

"Everything will be all right, Ulyna. I know how to play my part, I've done this before," she assured her soothingly, kissing each of her cheeks before releasing her and continuing on to the reception hall alone where she found the rest of her family assembled already in the midst of introductions. Entering the circle, she curtseyed while her mother introduced her and named their guests anew for her benefit, although she'd memorised them long before this visit.

"My Baroness, my Baron, Lady Titania, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintances. I apologise for keeping you all waiting when I'm sure you'd like to take some rest and refreshment after your journey," she remarked politely, her eyes a brown-tinged, neutral grey.

"My daughter has a point; it's rather rude to keep you standing here in the hall. Your belongings are being brought in as we speak so if you wish to change or freshen up before we discuss business, I can have you shown to your rooms. After that, we can retire to the drawing room for refreshments and consider our trade positions; Valeria can entertain Lady Titania in the front lounge while we're indisposed," her mother explained, smoothly taking her cue from her heir, something that had been suitably rehearsed. All the same, it was pleasant to see the light of approval in Raakel's eyes and it made Valeria feel incredibly proud of herself.

Her brothers were freed from further responsibilities as servants came to lead the nobles away, leaving the remaining Burhans to go to their respective places. Valeria heard her mother ordering food to be brought to them as she made her way to the lounge, taking a seat as she waited for Velaine to be brought to her. She found it difficult to sit still, fidgeting in her seat although as soon as her guest was shown in, she'd stand and curtsey again, the appearance of the perfect lady as she offered her hand for the other girl to shake lightly.

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

Velaine would have much preferred to stay at home, at her comfortable bed. Instead of spending trials stuck in a carriage, making her way to Burhan land. Unfortunately, her parents had given her no choice. Apparently, her existence was useless if she was not paraded around Rynmere. Her mother had said the exact words when Velaine argued against going.

“Stop sulking, Titania!” Sophia chastised for the fifth time as they rolled in front of the Burhan’s mansion. “We have already arrived. Don’t embarrass our family.”

The young woman gave her mother the sweetest smile. “Of course, mother. Have I ever been anything but a perfect daughter?” It was true. Never mind what she really felt, Velaine had always carried herself perfectly in front other people. It kept her mostly unnoticed – much preferable dealing to the rantings of her parents if she had acted the slightest bit improper.

As soon as they entered, it was all the usual series of events. Servants rushed forward to carry their things. The Burhans greeted her parents warmly, though Velaine very little attention, reacting only when addressed directly. She did notice the girl that was Valeria Burhan, who was much more prepared for this interaction than the Krome was.

While she had expected to be escorted to her room, it seemed like Velaine was spend to spend some time with Valeria. Which she did not mind, really. Since she was already stuck here, the Krome had every intention to explore the place. Soon enough, the servants escorted her to the front lounge and opened the door inside.

Standing in front of her was a girl about her age, with curled blonde hair and a pretty face. The Burhan was taller than her, but then again, a lot of people was taller than her. Velaine replied with a curtsy of her own, a polite smile on her face. It had been a relief that the Burhans at least had a daughter. It would make the trip a lot more bearable for her.

They had been introduced earlier, but the young woman didn’t know what else to say as she shook the girl’s hand. “Titania Velaine Krome. It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Burhan.” She glanced around, taking in the lounge as servants slipped in carrying trays of food. Saints, the sight of it was enough to make her hungry. “You have a lovely home.”

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

Formalities were something that the teenager understood well. There was a rhyme and reason to them, a formula that she could follow so that she was never left in the lurch, unsure what to do with herself. However, it was situations like this that left her uncertain. Obviously, this wasn't a political meeting or a truly formal one. She had to conduct herself politely, of course, but there was something a bit more casual about this scenario, as it was just the two of them. Although they might put on airs and graces, they weren't adults and didn't have to follow the same sorts of rules, not exactly. Even then, she'd seen adults act familiarly to one another before, despite not knowing each other well. It left her unsure what sort of demeanour to adopt.

The pair shook hands, the blonde's grip firm but not too tight and the contact was brief. By actually touching one another, the ice seemed to have been broken or so Valeria felt and thus, she was willing to ease up on the formalities a bit. "The pleasure is mine, Lady Krome. Please call me, Valeria, or something shorter if you'd prefer. Ivy Gawyne calls me Val but I'm perfectly happy with V," she explained with a friendly smile, her eyes a warm brown. She gestured for the other girl to join her on the long settee, perching herself comfortably on one end, angling herself towards where she expected her guest to sit. Although there would still be some space between them, the girl wanted to give off the impression of being warm and welcoming, and something as simple as turning herself towards another person worked wonders.

"Do you mind if I call you Titania? Or would you prefer to go by something else?" she asked, as she sat with her knees pressed together and her ankles neatly crossed as she waited for the servants to array food and drink on the low table beside them. The various sandwiches, pastries and sweet treats looked quite appealing, and a definite effort had been made to ensure that it was an attractively colourful spread. "Thank you for coming. I'm quite glad to have the company, especially while my parents are different with other matters. I'm sure you must be positively famished though. Please, don't hesitate to eat on my account," she commented with a broad smile.

Her hands moved from where they'd been clasped in her lap to the table, fiddling with the teapot as she ensured that the leaves were sufficiently brewed. With one hand holding the lid in place, she tipped the vessel and poured the scalding liquid into one of the cups. She filled it a little over halfway before moving onto her own cup. With that done, she set the vessel down again, considerably lighter now and busied herself with the other little tasks that would complete the ritual, putting her guest's needs before her own as she'd been taught to do; it was the mark of a good hostess.

"So tell me, have you visited Burhan before? I know that it's rather out of the way although it's easier to get here from Krome compared to some other places," Valeria commented, taking up a sweet pastry to nibble on. Now that the Kromes were here, she felt a lot calmer and so her stomach no longer roiled at the mere thought of food. "Once you've had a chance to settle in, I can show you around the grounds although there's no rush. As I understand it, you're due to be here for a ten-trial, is that correct?" she questioned softly, not having to inject any interest into her voice; she was genuinely curious, a fact to which the soft, silver glimmer in her irises attested

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

Velaine could not help noting that her host was quite excited – or at least tried hard to look like so. While the young Krome wasn’t thrilled to be here, it seemed harmless to at least try to summon some more eagerness. She slipped a stray strand of her air behind her ear, her eyes glistening with a lighter blue that matched her dress and a soft smile poised on her lips.

At the Burhan’s request, Velaine couldn’t help but reminded of her own preference not to be called by such a mouthful name like Titania. It seemed like she was not the noble lady who wasn’t entirely satisfied by her given name. “Very well, I shall call you V and you can call me Velaine. I’ve always liked my middle name a lot better.”

The Krome took a seat beside her host and let her eyes wander to the refreshments laid out on the table in front of them. “I am also glad for your company, V. Waiting for my parents to discuss their trade arrangements can be terribly dull… I suppose unless they’re talking about marriages.” Despite her jest, Velaine had always been a bit wary of her parents’ plans regarding her future. She had always known that her fate as a noble lady would mean marrying anyone of her parents’ choosing. It was quite the terrifying thought for a fifteen year old girl – an age where one could already be married off.

Well, at least Velaine knew that their trip here was not for that reason. The young woman had been eavesdropping on some of her mother’s gatherings with the other noblewoman and heard that she was thinking of marrying her daughter to someone from Venora.

“No, not really,” the young woman admitted. If she did, it was probably only briefly for parties and whatnots. Velaine knew her family managed most of their through the river with the Burhans, the house known for its sailors. “What’s it like in Burhan? In Krome all we have are forests and strong winds.” The young woman had barely glanced out the window of her carriage during her travel here. Not that it mattered. Like V said, she had at least ten days to explore the land.

Velaine was planning not to touch the refreshments so soon, but the choices of food available to her during her travel was minimal. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, how old are you, V? It seems like we’re quite similar in terms of age,” the Krome asked curiously as she reached for a delicate looking pastry.

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

The blonde smiled, glad that her guest had acquiesced so willingly to her request and as such, she was obviously quite willing to use her preferred name too. "Very well. Velaine it is, I shan't forget," she promised with a smile, sweeping a few stray blonde curls out of her eyes. She'd wanted to lessen the degree of formality between them and it seemed that she'd succeeded quite well if they were both willing to speak on familiar terms. It was still early in the trial but things looked quite promising so far.

She noted Velaine's gaze lingering on the food on the table and so she reached for one of the daintily cut sandwiches in the hopes of encouraging her to take something to eat as well. She nibbled at it delicately, brows raising as she listened to the other girl talk so nonchalantly about discussions of marriage. "Do you really think that marriage talks are that interesting to listen in on?" she asked curiously, head askance as she waited for an answer.

She didn't know if she'd agree with Velaine on that one but perhaps the Krome's parents were more able to talk reasonably about the matter than Valeria's own. They'd tentatively approached the matter before she went through her difficult phase and once that occurred, they'd left off, fearing what their daughter might do. More than anything, they'd been frightened about how it would reflect on them if they tried to pawn their mentally ill teenager onto one of the other Houses. They could hardly have allowed anyone to find out how unstable she'd been but now that she was doing better, they'd begun to cautiously approach the issue again. Of course, she'd exhibited her own interest in the matter and it was clear that they were pleased by their daughter's sense and ambition. She wondered if Velaine was as proactive regarding her eventual marriage.

The blonde shrugged, pulling a face when the other asked what Burhan had to offer. "There isn't a great deal to Burhan really. Lots and lots of trees, a bit of swamp, not a great deal if I'm perfectly honest. It's unbelievably humid at any time outside of the Cold Cycle and there isn't a great deal to do. I'm sure you noticed that a carriage ride through our territory is really rough. We don't have proper roads. I wouldn't exactly call that an achievement. If I had some say in the matter..." she explained, trailing off before she could grow too opinionated on the matter.

She smiled at the age question as she too helped herself to a pastry. "I don't mind you asking. I know they say that you should never ask a lady their age but it hardly counts between ladies, especially when we're both young," Valeria explained with a soft laugh. "I'm fifteen arcs old. I'll be sixteen in the middle of Vhalar but I imagine that you're right. We probably are about the same age. Would that be correct?"

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

Velaine laughed gently at the Burhan’s inquiry. “I should, don’t you think? Such discussions will determine my future. I would like to be a part of it, there’s no doubt about it.” Arcs ago, the young woman wouldn’t care about marriage talks. She had been naïve enough to believe that it didn’t matter as long as she was paired to a handsome lord. Now, Velaine she wanted more than that. A life of being a pawn, a commodity to be sold off – that’s not something she could accept. She could do more, much more then what her parents or her brother were capable of. “What about you, V? Ever give it much thought?”

As the Burhan talked about her home, the Krome smiled slightly. The girl certainly made it sound like it was a rather awful place to live in. They were different in that aspect then. Velaine had slowly started to grow very fond of her homeland. The woods gave her a reprieve from a family – something she often needed. The wild could feel more welcoming than her own house at times. “What are you going to do if you have any say in the matter? I mean, you will inherit this place one day.” Unlike her, who was not an heir to anything.

The Krome nodded as ran her fingers through her hair. “I have only turned fifteen last Cylus.” She was never one to keep it very tidy – after all the winds of Krome could easily mess up any hair do – and she liked it that way. The fact that it infuriated her mother was a bonus. She made herself give the other girl a rueful smile. “Truth be told, I don’t think I have my friends our age.” Or at all, really. Velaine had learned the hard way that she could only rely on herself, so making friends was not a top priority in her life.

[Burhan] First Impressions (Velaine)

Her brows rose at the other's comment, her eyes changing to a thoughtful silvery grey. She had a point about them being important discussions of which to be a part. Of course, she didn't think taking an interest in them could make much difference though. If she was present or even tried to contribute to such a discussion, there was little chance that she'd manage to have any sort of influence on her parents' decision. Words didn't mean a great deal to them, no matter how well she might express herself. It was far more important to allow her actions to speak for her. Her actions had been speaking quite loudly for her over the past few cycles and she knew that her parents were pleased. Better yet, it seemed that they were willing to trust her with particular matters, which meant that she might have a greater effect on her own future; she might be allowed to do that much.

"Oh I've certainly thought about it. I've worked out that it's a good idea to make connections, a great many connections and perhaps someone might take my fancy. I mean, if he looks good, he isn't a bad sort and it's a good political match then I think I'd be doing well," she explained with a imperious toss of her head, flipping her hair back as she did so. "I don't think that anyone marries for love, do you? I think that they might tell themselves that they're in love but I think they're just making the best of things."

The Burhan didn't have an issue with airing her opinions. On the contrary, she quite enjoyed the sound of her own voice and thought that her ideas were quite intelligent. The fact that she was only fifteen arcs old and hadn't really seen that much of the world didn't shake her resolve in the slightest. The blonde had a certain amount of inborn confidence but some of it came from a great deal of bolstering; her self-esteem hadn't always run this high.

When Velaine asked her what she'd do with the place - Senlin would one day be hers after all - she sat up a bit straighter, brushing down her skirt as she breathed deeply, preparing to give quite a speech.

"Well, like I said, we haven't got any roads. That's something that could be improved within the barony at least although I wish I could do more for the entire region but I can't, unfortunately," Valeria explained. "Good roads would make a good start. Timber is obviously important but it takes quite a few years to grow. It'd be a good idea to plan new forests, set some ground aside for other things. Swampland isn't much good for anything solid, like roads so we could use that for forestry and clear some more useful space. Burhan is a tough region and we can't rely on others for food all the time. We need to have our own spaces for growing crops, raising animals, storage space, that kind of thing. We need to be able to get our own food but also preserve it. Self-reliance is important to us but I don't think we're anywhere near self-sufficient enough. My family won't starve in a hard winter but what about our people? We can't have that."

She sighed, more than a little forlorn at her thoughts, her eyes having grown a morose dark blue as she spoke. She plastered a smile on her face although her eyes were slow to shift back to warmer brown tones. She was hear to entertain and be friendly, not outline what she wanted to happen to her homeland. She just needed to go back to light conversation.

"So there isn't that much of an age gap between us then. A cycle. I've spent a lot of time here on my own until recently though so I haven't had much reason to interact with others, never mind those my own age," the teenager admitted, curling hair around her finger. "I went to visit Ivy Gawyne recently. She's younger than me. Caius Gawyne is older, he's, well..." she trailed off, feeling a treacherous heat creep into cheeks. "He hardly counts, you know? He's a boy after all so he isn't the most appropriate company for a young lady." He's nice though, she added silently.
