Fateful Encounter

Zi'da 70 717, Late Afternoon

Location: Andaris, The Docks

She'd just arrived at the docks a while ago and made her way off the ship, already curious as to what antics Andaris had waiting for her to discover. The kingdom of Rynmere was a new but welcome change given her expenditure overseas, even if she liked the idea of sailing it was somewhat to an extent. Eventually all that water just became a constant sight which grew older with each passing Trial, plus the cold nights and mornings weren't very enjoyable in a sailing ship also. With her bag in tow over he shoulders Kayleigh marched down the docks, and onto the trail to Andaris to hopefully start her search there.

"Well well. You finally made it." A voice registered in her mind as she stopped to turn and see who addressed her, surprise to find that it was none other than the cloaked individual from Ne'haer.

"Y-you?!" She gasped as she nearly reached for her sword already, defensive over the fact this stranger had yet again appeared before her.

"Correct." He mocked with a cross of his arms while the hood mimed that of a nod. "Finally decided to look elsewhere for little Higan? Well no worries, he's being looked after quite well. Your father too by the way. They're both a bit of an interest to us."

"My... father?" Her angry look lessened into more of a surprised one next.

"Yeah, go figure. Looks like the master has a use for him too..." He then released his arms from their cross over and shrugged. "Still doesn't know what to do with you though."

"What's that suppose to mean?!" She called out bitterly.

"It means that, for now, you're no good to any of us. So enjoy the time you have, and until then do whatever it is you... people do." He responded with his back turned to her.

"Where's Higan?!" Kayleigh outright demanded with a few steps made to follow, however she stopped when he turned to point past her. It appeared to be some sort of rundown shack, where sailors and locals alike were coming and going as they pleased.

"Check there and see if he's inside, he is the reason you're here after all. Not that you'll find him here, but I'm sure you'll be glad to meet daddy dearest inside."

"Daddy?... Aelorn's in there?" She inquired as she looked from the building back to where the figure was, however it looked as he had yet again disappeared into thin air somehow. "Where?" She muttered under her breath as she looked all around to see if she could spot him, that had made not once but twice since she'd failed to see how he could vanish. That is if he actually vanished. Kayleigh hadn't been able to determine much about this person, aside from the fact he was working with others became apparent once he mentioned 'the master'. So who were they?

Higan wasn't here as that became apparent, but was he speaking true when Aelorn was brought up? Kayleigh could only find out for herself to be certain, and that would only happen once she investigated the shack that people appeared to be frequenting.

Fateful Encounter

Location: The Rusty Anchor

To her surprise she'd found the inside of this place a lot more organized than on the outside, she'd entered along a pair of sailors that allowed her to go first. Clever as their etiquette was she knew they'd allowed her in for reason, men in general were always happy to have a glimpse at women when possible. The main room where the bar was proved to be lined with tables all over, each filled with men and even women that had come in for a drink. Kayleigh walked slowly into the area determined to pick out any sort of familiar face, the expectation to find her father here now in a fast dwindle as her eyes searched every person.

"Kayleigh?" She stopped as her face turned to the source, this time the familiar voice a welcomed sound to hear. At the table several feet to her right sat a man, hairy and bearded compared to the usual clean cut he kept around his children. But the strong facial structure and same vulnerable eyes she knew were there, as Aelorn sat his mug container on the table when he rose from the chair he'd sat down at. "Kayleigh!"

"Father!" Kayleigh muttered earnestly as she eagerly moved around to greet him, she never knew it would be such a comfort to be held by her own dad. "You're here! I can't believe you're here!"

"I'm here!" He chuckled as he held onto her tightly, quick to turn her face to his as he looked down at her intensely. "But how? Why are you here?"

"I came here to look for Higan, I'd found him once already except that he..." She felt a lump well inside her chest and for some reason she wanted to cry. "Papa I think somebody's manipulating Higan, he wouldn't come home when I asked him to. He wanted to go it alone to search for something, and to make matters worse there's some hooded man filling his head. Feeding him these thoughts for whatever sick game he's playing!"

"Kay, settle down." He urged her as he helped removed the straps off her pack, his hands used to encouragingly guide her into the seat. "Slow down now, tell me all that's happened since we last met."

Since they last met? Last time they'd seen one another was in Ne'haer, just as Kayleigh arrived to see if Higan followed their father. Ever since then? Well she'd searched Ne'haer briefly but found nothing, moved onward to find no word in Argos, and then even checked in Uthaldria for him as well. Her time there however only showed just how dangerous the world was for someone so young, and it wasn't until last Vhalar she'd discovered Higan right in Ne'haer. That was after she'd made the trip back down south, braving the Fields of Gauthrel with her companion Uphrisca.

So what happened when she found Higan? Well the hooded figure for starters. Everything he seemed to be hinting at remained unclear to Kayleigh, and while Aelorn didn't seem to understand any meaning behind the words, he definitely didn't like the sound of someone filling Higan's head with ridiculous banter. Then what happened in Ne'haer's Underground came next and, quite surprisingly, Aelorn seemed avidly shocked about the whole story. He never once quite anticipated his daughter taking up a sword, much less fighting to get to the root of this unusual predicament. "Uphrisca and I searched for Higan further after that, but by then he'd already left Ne'haer to Immortals know where. The hooded man taunted me with the fact he wasn't here in Rynmere, and implied that I look here for you just before he vanished once more..."

"I... I see." Aelorn remarked with his hands balled together before his mouth, the father then closed his eyes with a heavy exhale through his nose. "This 'hooded man' seems to be a mage, a recurring problem here within Rynmere."

"Huh?" Kayleigh tilted her head in question to the statement.

"Just one of the few political struggles Rynmere is dealing with right now, I'd say this man has a way of getting around though if he knew you'd just arrived here." Aelorn dropped his hands on the table next, his eyes fallen to the mug as he looked a little grim. "Unfortunately Kay, the man happens to be right. I've spent the later half of Vhalar and the majority of Zi'da searching, and not once has Higan been noticed or heard of. And if they're watching him now, then odds are they're not gonna let him do anything reckless..."

"Meaning?" She asked innocently, unsure what Aelorn was hinting at.

"Meaning these people won't let anything happen to him, and even if he's still in danger due to their interest... he's also safe from outside danger as well." Admittedly that was quite a bold point to make, one Kayleigh didn't want to accept but couldn't deny all the same. "Higan's out there still, a fact I don't like being left unchecked. But if he's got people that are looking out for him, then chances are he's doing just fine on his own for the time being."

"So we just let them do whatever they have planned?" She retorted with a defiant look.

"No! Not what I'm getting at." Her father remarked with a raised finger. "We don't know anything about these people, aside from the fact they could be mages. I couldn't see them being able to get around so easily otherwise..." Aelorn groped at his beard with intrigue in his eyes. "Kayleigh. Promise me you won't go after Higan for a while, not until I send word to you about the matter."

"What?!" She didn't understand at all, her eyes alight with determination to refuse. "No Papa, I can't just-"

"Hear me out Kayleigh!" He pleaded with a hand raised for her to refrain from speaking. "Please, just hear me out." She crossed her arms and leaned back into her chair, her eyes sharply on him as she remained silent for him to speak. "I'm not giving up on searching and nor should you, but at least give me the time I need to do some looking into on all this. I know some people in that might be able to help me do a bit of digging on this, it'll take me some time but I promise I'll send word first chance I'm onto something."

"So... What should I do until then?" She inquired with her eyebrows raised.

"Do as you have been." He instructed with a shrug. "Wander around and experience the world for yourself, Rynmere is a place much unlike the rest of the world. It's people doesn't share our culture but they do... have interesting antics at best."

She looked to consider the option at best, given the fact that here mages seemed to be an interest of a sort. If they were a problem here in Rynmere, then maybe she could find out more of this group during her visit. "Alright." She agreed. "I'll remain here then, until you send word."

She might've promised not to act on impulse... but she certainly wasn't going to stop from her own investigation.

Overview

This was a really interesting thread which had lots of interesting plot points, lots of parts in it. My only comment would be that I'm left unclear as to what was going on here, why her father was there etc. When writing a thread like this, it might be worth to link to previous threads, or have some kind of a written precis, perhaps, as part of the beginning of the thread. Other than that, good writing, well done!
