Of course Tristan regretted his attempt to lure the shadow beast away from Mrs. Delner immediately – because it was successful! As it spun around and snarled at him, the noble considered turning around, running back home and slamming the door shut behind him. But then he remembered that Faith was there with him. He didn’t want her to think him a coward and despise him, even though the opinion of a slave shouldn’t matter. Besides, if he let the monster eat Mrs. Delner, she’d never make cake for him again!
So as it jumped at him, he readied his weapon that suddenly seemed completely ridiculous to him and looked directly into its eyes, as if he were a strong and fearless hero, even though his hand began to tremble ever so slightly. He prepared himself for the attack – the monster seemed to be aiming straight for his throat – but the attack never came. Instead the monster landed on the ground with Faith on top of it. He just stood there for a moment and stared because he couldn’t believe his eyes before he sprang into action.
Faith was a small woman, and she barely seemed to be able to keep the monster from biting her. He needed to help her! Unfortunately he didn’t know anything about shadow beast anatomy. Did they have internal organs, like normal animals? Were they in the usual places? Did they bleed? Could they be killed through normal means? He had to at least give it a try. He met Faith’s gaze for a moment before he drove his blade directly into the beast’s exposed belly.
A horrifying screech could be heard from the shadow beast as it tried to shake Faith off and moved all of its limbs at once. Tristan pulled his blade out again and drove it into the monster again because two attacks were better than one, and the thing wasn’t dead yet. In fact it wasn’t even close to dying. And then he brought his blade down a third time.
It was just then that Mrs. Delner recovered from her shock and decided to help as well and attack the monster with her walking stick. Unfortunately her eyesight had constantly been getting worse for the past couple of arcs. With her first attack she managed to hit the beast that snarled and spun around, with Faith still on its back, focusing on the poor old lady instead. That allowed Tristan to attack the monster one final time, before …
… before he felt something hard come in contact with his head, and the world went black for a trill or two. Mrs. Delner had decided to attack again, but this time she had hit Tristan instead.
While the noble sat on the ground and held his head, the monster under Faith started to twitch before it suddenly went limp. A moment later, it was gone. It had returned to the shadows, and Faith would probably land on the ground – hard.
Mrs. Delner, who was a little slow in the mental department sometimes, blinked, looked at the scene in front of her and asked, “Is it dead now?”
