Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

The Busiest Bar In Viden

46 Ymiden 720
Here he was again. The Cold Shoulder. It was a small joint in Viden where the drinks were always cold... not that it was very hard to keep your drinks cold in Viden... and not to say that all the drinks they served tasted best cold. Balthazar was sitting at a table in the corner, as always, because it gave him the best view of the building and the bar. He had his second drink in front of him and a modest meal that he was half way through when Nimue walked through the door. She'd been there the whole time and Balthazar had a vague sense of where because he was attuned to her, but they had agreed that it drew far too many eyes when Nimue just materialized in the chair beside him. So she promised she would materialize outside of buildings and walk in when there were too many people around.

"Find anything useful?" Nimue asked as she sat down in the chair across from Balthazar, obstructing his view slightly. His head shifted up a little so he could see around her and when Nimue realized she was in his way, she scooted her chair a little to the left. She held out her hand across the table and Balthazar looked at it for a few trills before looking back at Nimue.

"They didn't have any purple whiskey. It'll take me a few more drinks." Balthazar said as he raised his cup and took another sup of the ale he'd ordered.

"Fine, then just give me some of the buzz. It's been too long." Nimue pleaded and Balthazar sighed. He supposed it was only fair that if he be drinking, she drink as well. Balthazar gave Nimue his hand and she smiled as she pulled it a little further across the table.

"Just remember not to mess with my lifespan." Nimue folded her other hand over Balthazar's and closed her eyes, focusing on the energies inside Balthazar that she could feel. She opened her soul to the mage and imagined that it was what it felt like for Balthazar to open his frequency so he could attune to her but they'd never discussed it. As curious as Nimue was, she was still driven by her obsession. That obsession had nothing to do with learning magic and everything to do with living her best life as a ghost.

Balthazar noticed the change a few trills after Nimue closed her eyes. As strange as it was, he felt himself beginning to care less about his surroundings- it was only his discipline that reminded him where he was and why. Balthazar drank the rest from his cup and waved for a server to come bring him another. Nimue smiled, color seeming to fill her pale face as she syphoned Balthazar's emotions. She did this for exactly two bits and then let go of Balthazar's hand. "Thank you."

The poison flows on tap, sweet nectar of blue apes.

The egg had a strange way of making its daily agenda known sometimes. But when Zemos woke from his noontime nap, he had a strange compulsion to seek out other people at a tavern. It wasn't that far from the poor neighborhood he shacked up in to The Cold Shoulder. It wasn't what most would call a high class establishment. Perhaps not as iniquitous as the Devil's Advocate, but it had a crowd all its own.

"Yes, we're almost there. Didn't Soph say she'd join us here?"

"No Father, Bookworm said she was going to the Advocate. But we will slake our thirst at the Cold Shoulder."

Zemos didn't know why the egg was so fixated on The Cold Shoulder in particular, when there were dirtier taverns to attend. He supposed Cold was what attracted it to the place, perhaps equating that word with the common disease. In any event, he felt compelled to follow its directives. He could always catch up with Bookworm some other time.

He arrived at the Cold Shoulder, and noticed a man talking to himself. Hmm, a kindred spirit perhaps? Zemos always enjoyed people who liked talking enough that they did it by themselves. His glowing olive eyes drifted over toward him, and then to the open chair at the corner table. He took a seat right next to the white-haired man, and tapped the table when a server came over, "Server! Fermented milk?" He asked, trying out the word he'd learned from his chemistry lessons. He wasn't yet adept at speaking common, but was getting there. Soon enough, he'd be able to hold his own in a casual conversation, but for now he was stuck speaking through Bookworm, when she accompanied him places.

While he waited for his drink to arrive, he turned to the man next to him. He looked tough, but Zemos was friendly, and not put off by such appearances. "Happy greetings! Have you to the tavern? It good time here." His common was atrocious still, and he wished the people he talked to had Xanthean.

Such blessings to this one, is he magic? The egg took note of the oddities to the man's appearance, but Zemos shook his head. They seemed subtle enough that he wasn't sure if magic was the source of the man's odd appearance.

"I like drink!" Zemos said cheerfully to the man, as his fermented milk was brought to him. He began to drink it.

Re: The Busiest Bar In Viden

It did not take long for someone to steal Nimue's seat after she wandered to the bar to get Balthazar two more 'surprise' drinks. For a man who spent a great majority of his time in bars and taverns looking for leads and clues to help solve his cases, Balthazar did not try a great variety of drinks. He almost always drank whiskey before Nimue popped into his life with all her demands of better tasting drinks. She'd always enjoyed the more exotic alcohols that she could find in Yaralon though she couldn't deny she felt a draw towards purple whiskey like Balthazar did.

All the same, Nimue was at the bar with a bag of Balthazar's nels ordering a few drinks she thought sounded 'exotic' when the monk took her seat at Balthazar's table. Balthazar had been attuning to a few of the other customers in the bar to try and figure out if any of them had some secrets he could figure out from their frequencies. He'd been on the verge of discovering something truly remarkable about the bartender when Zemos's arrival broke his focus.

Balthazar's fingers curled into a fist beneath the table but after a trill he realized Zemos was not the same being that had attacked him the last time he was at the bar. No violence. That was what the Empty had demanded and so Balthazar was trying to do his best to stay under the Empty's radar because he knew it was somewhere around the bar... in someone perhaps...

Fermented milk? That did not sound appealing to Balthazar but when the server brought the drink over and the man began to drink it he seemed to enjoy the taste. Social little devil, this one, even though it was quickly clear to Balthazar that the man did not speak fluent common. Have you to the tavern? What did that mean? Balthazar liked to think he knew, but his response was really a shot in the dark. "I'll go anywhere the drinks are cheap and the times are good." That seemed like a valid enough explanation as to why he was at the bar. It was certainly better than I'm here to look for an Empty's anchor so I can destroy it before it harms the people here.

"There is definitely something wrong here." Nimue said as she reached Balthazar's table with a tray that had five different drinks on it.

"Yes, there is. I told you to get me one more drink." Balthazar gestured towards the tray in Nimue's hands and she set it down on the table before looking towards Zemos.

"Get out of my chair." Nimue said a little more confrontational than she needed to. She crossed her arms over he chest and narrowed her eyes at the monk.

"Leave him alone." Balthazar stood and grabbed a chair from the nearest table for Nimue to use instead and she gave him a stern look. "Don't start a problem we don't need to have. Tell me what you found later, we have a guest." Balthazar insisted Nimue play along and after a few seconds, the anger on his furrowed brow shifted into an unhappy complacency. She sat in her chair and gave the tray of drinks a little shove towards Balthazar.

"Fine but get to work." Nimue ordered and Balthazar picked up the first drink. It looked like black licorice that had been melted into a drink and tasted somewhat like it too when Balthazar took a sip. He set the drink down in front of him and looked towards Zemos.

"I'm Balthazar. This is Nimue." Balthazar spoke slowly and gestured to himself, then Nimue as he introduced them to Zemos "We're travelers. Who are you?" Of course, Balthazar was attuning to the new arrival as he asked the very question in order to see how honest Zemos was about his response.

Zemos smiled at Balthazar, although he looked distracted at the first, when the monk took a seat across from him. He said something then, a standard return to the greeting at how much he enjoyed the tavern. The details didn't matter much. What mattered was what passed between them.

Yes father! Speak to each other! Trade dancing mites that dance on the air! Watch as they revel! Zemos giggled at the suggestion that the vapors going out of his mouth were dancing with Balthazar's. The egg had so much to say since it awoke earlier in the season. He found this one funny. But to the stranger, it must have seemed as if he was giggling at his introduction. Not mocking, but acknowledging that the man was making an effort to be friendly.

Then, it became apparent that the man had a fellow with him, someone, strange. Zemos sniffed the air deeply. Strange, no perfume, no human scent greeted him. Granted, he was in the middle of a crowded tavern, but Zemos prided his sense of smell. It came with the olfactory fatigue, being accustomed to so much filth tended to drown it out in favor of new scents. But nothing from the woman. Perhaps she was filthy too?

"No wrong, sister! Under roof all are welcome!"

The woman demanded something that Zemos didn't quite catch, but had to do with the chair he was sitting in. His face twisted in confusion as he looked up at her, "My chair? No not my chair."

Balthazar took a tone that suggested defense. So the woman that looked like his twin was being aggressive with Zemos? The wench sees us not, we hears and sees her not! Tell us father what does she say?

Zemos shook his head, and returned to smiling at Balthazar, as he sipped on the fermented milk, and accepted an extra drink from Balthazar. The Sevir had been planning on skipping the tab, the bill having done so successfully at another eatery. He just presumed his being a student earned him certain privileges. It never occurred to him that eating was a crime! But come to think of it, some people had been shouting at him as he left the other place.

Finally, the white-haired man spoke once more introducing himself as well as his twin. The Sevir smiled widely, spittle on his lips as he pronounced his name, "I am Zemos! Zemos is a student at the Academy! I learn so much at Academy."

Zemos, at first, thought to ask if the strange White-hair knew his old master, Malach, but then thought better of it. Since being on his own, he'd enjoyed himself slightly more. Felt more... himself... if he knew who he was. But who he was had been lost in the white void before. He only knew Zemos now, and was getting to know him better everyday, along with his friend the egg now, that it had awoken.

Zemos remembered the Northern and Eastern custom of shaking hands. A custom he eagerly adopted. He stuck out his hand for Balthazar to shake. "Good greetings!"

Nimue seemed confused when Zemos said nothing was wrong and that all were welcome under the roof but she quickly seemed to realize what Balthazar had already figured out. Common was a second language for Zemos. Balthazar thought Zemos was an odd one as well due to the little things like chuckling at inappropriate times but he was more than willing to excuse it. He wasn't always so passive but Zemos interested him. Was this an agent of the ghost that had attacked him or was this merely a friendly bar-hopper. Zemos wasn't human and he wasn't a ghost. His race was more complicated than either of those two familiar notes.

Balthazar focused on Zemos's frequency and the myriad of notes singing within it but he disguised this action by taking another sup of one of the drinks Nimue had brought to him. It was a little thrilling to dig into an unknown frequency and examine the notes within the personal song. One note sang constantly true and so Balthazar singled it out, focusing in to try and figure out what it was. Then Zemos said something and Balthazar, in his focus, didn't quite catch what Zemos was saying. Fortunately Nimue was quick to cut in with her own thoughts.

"Ugh, another bookworm." Nimue grumbled as her materialized foot swiftly swept beneath the table and kicked Balthazar in the leg to get his attention. Balthazar took the kick without flinching or jumping and turned his head to Zemos with an expression that would probably make Zemos think what he had said was far more fascinating than it was. Balthazar was fascinated, but only because he was fairly certain he'd figured out what the note he was isolating revealed. Sev'ryn? Balthazar couldn't be entirely sure but it really sounded sev'yrn.

Then Balthazar realized why Nimue had kicked him. Zemos was holding his hand out and waiting for Balthazar to shake it. "Good greetings." Balthazar repeated as he reached to shake Zemos's hand. Balthazar did flinch slightly at the familiar shock that passed between their hands meeting and he realized he'd have to explain it to Zemos. "I am a mage." Balthazar explained as he withdrew his hand. "What do you learn at the Academy?" Balthazar asked.

As Balthazar's attunement magics reached out to ascertained the myriad notes flowing around Zemos, one note indeed rose above the rest. If Balthazar had met other Sev'ryn in his time, he'd recognise it instantly in Zemos. Except, if those Sev'ryn were bonded to a familiar, Zemos was not, or had a more tenuous bond to a spirit. There was a slight void where the spirit would usually inhabit in a Sev'ryn.

There was something more to his frequency, however. He was not a mage, there was no magical parasite lurking within him, but something similar to it. Something that lurked within him with a consciousness all its own. It was from the influence of an Immortal, he could tell, but which Immortal? Deeper inside of Zemos, a vibrating and shivering consciousness that bore some sort of sickness all its own. There was the buzzing of flies about him, but whether this was a spirit that wanted to bond with the Sev'ryn, or part of his mark, it was hard to tell immediately.

As the mage stared intently at Zemos, he shrunk from his gaze, slightly off put by such intense attention, "Something wrong?" He asked. Antennae! Antenna!? Antennaena! The egg warned Zemos, but he didn't understand the warning, and shrugged.

When Nimue grumbled about bookworms, Zemos perked up, "Bookworms! Where?!" Zemos checked his sackcloth satchel, for the books he'd borrowed from class. He checked the edges of the pages for signs of a bookworm's meal, but they were pristine. Then what was Nimue talking about?!

Zemos suddenly felt himself outnumbered by these two twins, wait, were they twins? They certainly looked alike. The Sev'ryn thought to ask just then, curiously, "You two brother and sister? Twins?"

When at last the man who was a mage confessed to his status, Zemos nodded, thoroughly intrigued by the idea of magical talent. He wished he could learn magic, but then it was said to be risky. When asked what he did at the Academy, Zemos replied simply, "I study Toxicology, poisons."

Something was odd about the notes dancing in Zemos's frequency but Bathazar couldn't quite put his finger on it. Notes that should have been there, the notes that sang the song of the familiar bonded to the Sev'ryn were missing. Instead Zemos had other notes. Familiar notes that had once been too dangerous for Balthazar to try and listen too. The notes of divinity... but who's? The note sang like a thousand flies buzzing around a dead body and Balthazar didn't know what to make of it at first. He'd dedicate a little more focus to figuring it out but in the meantime he'd do his best to keep talking like a normal person.

"Nothing wrong, you just look familiar." Balthazar said as a sly move to disguise the rather intense focus he was giving Zemos. Nimue smirked slightly because she knew the truth of what was going on but her amusement seemed to fade a little as the language barrier became clear once more. Not literal bookworms, you dolt. But Nimue knew better than to say something so openly rude in front of Balthazar. She could go without another chastising.

"No." Nimue said in a curt way when Zemos asked if they were siblings. Balthazar would have preferred that they just run with the idea of being siblings so people didn't question how they looked so similar but Nimue was quicker than the mage because he was still focusing on the frequency. "It's-"

"A gift from the Immortals." Balthazar lied to Zemos, having riddled out that the strange sound inside was divine in nature. Maybe if he thought Nimue was marked, he'd be more forthcoming about the divine essence in himself. "It lets her shapeshift. She thinks I'm attractive so she looks like me." Balthazar elaborated his lie which almost cause Nimue to laugh but she stifled it. She'd been around Balthazar long enough to go with it when he began telling lies. She could trust he had a good endgame for the both of them.

When Zemos told him what he studied, Balthazar was impulsively going to make a joke about how he ingested lots of poisons. Then when he remembered how Zemos talked he decided to save the joke for another time. "Poisons must be interesting. What made you want to study them?"

Zemos nodded politely, smiling when the man confessed that he looked familiar. Yet when he neglected to stop staring at Zemos, the smile faded slowly, until it vanished entirely. Something about this... it triggered a memory, or something that should have been a memory, or felt like one. Yet when he tried to access it, he came to the blank void again.

No father, don't take us there! This man with the antennae eyes, like those white shapes in the white void! The egg warned him against this strange man, and his staring. And for once, Zemos felt inclined to agree. Yet he remained in place for a few moments at least, long enough to enjoy his drink and allow the man to pay for it.

He sipped at it, listening to the man and woman as they talked to each other. The strange feeling returned soon enough, and he felt as if there was more than just the man at work here. Like there was a presence nagging at the edge of his consciousness. Ghosts or... spirits? Zemos didn't really know.

There was something very wrong here, in this bar, and he didn't know what it was.

He soon finished his drink, and placed it down on the table. He stood from his chair, and bowed from the waist to the man and woman, "I apologize! I very late to study!"

This said, he walked, then ran out of the bar. Once he was on the streets, he decided to go and find Sophie, and see if she had anything interesting going on in the Devil's Advocate.

Re: The Busiest Bar In Viden

46 Ymiden 720
"Well great, you scared him off." Nimue said as she pushed another drink towards Balthazar.

"I don't think that was me." Balthazar grumbled as he looked around and noticed something unsettling. Once Zemos had run from the building, Balthazar and Nimue were the only patrons left in the bar. For a few trills the workers continued to go about their work. A server brought a tray of dishes into the back and the bartender continued cleaning cups like machines going through the motions.

"I'm not angry. He was strange." Nimue said, oblivious to Balthazar's growing sense of discomfort. Balthazar's hand slipped up to the necklace Doran had lent him. It was a gift from an Immortal and it was supposed to mask his presence from the Empty but they'd all been unsure of whether or not the necklace would work. Unfortunately, it did.

A strange thing happened when the servers thought that the bar was empty. They all just stopped. Worse than that, they stopped and turned to face Nimue- the only being in the bar that they could see. Balthazar's eyes widened and he opened his frequency to begin attuning to the various servers. It took trills for him to pick up their frequency and only a few after that for Balthazar to dig enough to see something was wrong. It was just like when Nimue possessed someone. In every man and woman standing in the bar at that moment, Balthazar sense not one, but two frequencies. They were all possessed... and they had begun walking slowly towards Nimue.

Nimue noticed Balthazar's expression and turned just as a waiter reached her. He lashed out and grabbed hold of her shoulders with both of his hands and Nimue's expression shifted to terror as she felt the waiter begin to syphon her ectoplasm. A ghost being syphoned by another ghost felt similar to being burned alive- at least that was what Nimue described it as. Balthazar stood suddenly, knocking his chair to the ground as a horrible smell filled the air.

In the middle of the room, the shadows on the walls seem to collect into a humanoid figure that approached Nimue with it's arms reached out. Balthazar knocked his table over, crossing to Nimue and pulling the possessed waiter's arms off of her. "Nimue run! They can't convert me." Balthazar pulled the necklace off and threw it around Nimue's neck causing the specters in the bar to turn their gaze from where Nimue had been to where Balthazar was. Shit. Nimue was safe... the mage was not.

"We can take them!" Nimue shouted in response as the various phantoms pushed their ethereal bodies out of the victims they were possessing. The staff slumped to the ground, unconscious without the ghosts inside them. Balthazar grimaced and unsheathed Nimue's anchor.

"Not this time." Balthazar hurled the anchor out the window, and Nimue was dragged with it, leaving Balthazar alone in the bar with five phantoms and an Empty controlling them all. He couldn't risk the Empty doing the things he had heard it could do. He'd known Nimue only a season or so but their bond had become a close one and he was not going to allow the Empty to take her from him. Maybe they could win the fight together, but Balthazar wouldn't risk it. He estimated he'd bought himself ten bits before she could haul the anchor back here... unless she possessed someone... then maybe five bits.

"You!" Oh great... it recognized him. Balthazar's back was to a wall with no exit and no windows which made fleeing a little more difficult. As if it knew his intentions, one of the phantoms had moved in front of the window and materialized, obscuring the view of the street just enough that Balthazar didn't want to risk trying to teleport out. "I warned you." The shadow said as it moved towards Balthazar. The mage was quick, thrusting his hand forward to command the wind when suddenly invisible tendrils wrapped around Balthazar's forearms. They tightened quickly and tried to pull Balthazar's arms out to his sides but the mage resisted. The specters tugged with their tendrils as Balthazar pushed with all the strength in his arms to resist the pull.

Yet hope was lost when four more tendrils wrapped around each arm overpowering the mage and yanking his arms out to the sides. The shadow of a man reached Balthazar and placed his hands on both sides of Balthazar's head. "I warned you." Balthazar could feel the shadow's grip on his head beginning to tighten and a trill later something worse happened. His mouth went dry and all the scars across his body began to burn as the Empty started sucking life force from the mage. His sparks raged against the drain, his mind raced with decisions, and then Balthazar struck.

His first effort called on his newest spark. He reached into the Empty's frequency, attuning to it and then quickly synchronizing with it in an effort to force the Empty's arms out to the side. He'd tested the technique once before on a blacksmith and was relatively easily able to impose his will on the blacksmith, but in this case he only managed to learn a few of the notes he'd already expected to find in the Empty. It was too difficult to synchronize fully while his life was being drained from him... so Balthazar changed his plan.

Balthazar reached inward and called on his oldest spark. He called on the fire to burn and fueled it with whatever ether it demanded to get the job done. The tendrils wrapped around his arms suddenly burst into blue flames tracing all the way back to the phantoms who'd conjured them across the room. The phantoms screamed and for just a moment, the shadow man syphoning Balthazar seemed to turn his focus towards his wounded servants. It seemed to hurt him to watch them burn. But the moment of lost focus would cost the Empty his prize. Balthazar's arms had burned free and the specter blocking the window had moved out of the way when it was lit aflame.

With a wave of his hand and a leap, Balthazar tore a blinking portal open from the middle of the bar to the street outside. He crashed and rolled slightly on the ground before scrambling up to his feet. He had to ignore the pain of the few scrapes from the crash and keep moving. Balthazar had no idea how far that Empty could track him through the city without the necklace. So he ran and he ran and he stumbled but then he turned down an alley to take a breath.

That was where the ghost found him. Fortunately it was Nimue, not the Empty. "What the Beneath, Balthazar!" Nimue punched Balthazar on the arm and he groaned.

"What? I made it out, didn't I?"

Comments: So, this is the bar that Balthazar mentioned!

I was amused by the description of the bar in the first post. I’ve never heard of a place where all of the drinks are cold before. I already told you so in my last review, but Nimue is quite entertaining. It was nice of Balthazar to give her some of that buzz. She seemed to like it!

The egg was great, as always. You managed to give it a unique personality, Zemos. Its comments really added something to the thread. Zemos’ choice of drink was … interesting. His preferences as far as food and drinks are concerned are definitely unique!

I also thought that you did a great job with his broken Common. When Nimue talked about bookworms, and Zemos inspected his books, I couldn’t help but laugh. As for Zemos’ wondering if Nimue and Balthazar are siblings, he’s definitely not the only one!

The fight at the end was quite exciting.

Enjoy your rewards!
