Part 1
Part 2
Vhalar 28, Arc 719
The room that the Mortalborn and his student Astrid, a young human woman with blonde hair that she wore in a thick braid, entered was quite spacious and extraordinarily clean, and the large windows let a decent amount of light in. Shelves lined the walls, and on the shelves were cages that had various rats and mice in them. The cages were fairly big, and they had straw and little wooden houses as well as bowls with food and water for the rodents in them. The rodents themselves looked fairly healthy and active, with bright eyes and shiny fur.
Apparently, the Mortalborn realized with a hint of amusement as he noticed the expression on Astrid’s face, she had not expected to see that.
“Lab animals”, he informed the young woman in a somewhat cool and matter-of-fact tone and gestured for her to walk over to the large table that stood in the centre of the room with him. “Tend to live longer if they are healthy and happy; besides, I do not see a reason to make animals suffer needlessly in the name of science. In addition to being provided with comfortable housing and the opportunity to engage in species-typical behaviour, all of the Academy's lab animals are regularly being monitored by a veterinarian.”
Having said that, he set the vials that he had been carrying down on the table, very carefully as they contained a valuable prototype of the potion that he planned on writing a thesis about.
“That’s …”, Astrid remarked, her gaze flickering back to the cages where the rodents squeaked a bit and did whatever rodents usually did for a moment. “… good to know. So … how do we start, professor, if you don’t mind me asking? You said that you would allow me to assist you and help you record your findings?” she asked and raised an eyebrow questioningly. The young woman that had been quite confident before and was often a bit of a know-it-all, especially during lectures, the Mortalborn observed, seemed at a bit at a loss and slightly out of her element now.
Just like most of his other students, she had never had anything to do with lab animals before.
He didn’t reply immediately, but walked over to a nearby cupboard, opened it and handed Astrid a pair of protective gloves before he put gloves of his own on. “There are certain safety measures that we need to pay attention to, and hygiene is of course of the utmost importance – I’ll explain that in more detail in a bit. Put a lab coat on first though”, he informed her before he gestured for her to take a seat at the table and began to talk, about all the things that you needed to observe when you were working with lab animals.
The young woman would not have any direct contact with the animals – she would just take notes and occasionally hand him something that he needed, but he considered educating her to be important, nevertheless. Everything else would be irresponsible in his opinion.
