[Viden Academy] Teaching.....

Viden academy.

There had been a time when Faith had not been allowed here, as a slave. She had been barred from ever learning in this place, no matter how much she wanted to. Now, she was working as the Chancellor of the new Rharne University, which she had set up in conjunction with the Viden academy. It had taken a lot of time and a lot of effort to arrange it and now, it was coming to fruition. There had been delays, but Faith had expected that and, in a way, it was no bad thing. Because her time had been taken over the last few cycles with the War. Famula's general as was, Faith was beyond relieved to get back to the role she was used to. Working in the University, the Order, making sure that the world was a little bit better each trial.

She spent her days pretending that nothing had changed.

Of course, it had changed. It had more than changed - she had. At a fundamental, basic level, Faith had changed. There was a part of her that would never be the same; she had experienced betrayal and pain the like of which she had not been able to comprehend before it had happened - and Faith Augustin could comprehend pain. It was time, now, though to put it behind her - to push it into her hands and to enter the Academy. Here, she had a job to do. Today, she was giving a lecture. She'd given a few already and now she was doing a few "guest lecture" sessions.

Of course, the people here - the students, the lecturers, all the staff - they knew. They knew her - Famula's Champion, the woman who had led a war against the undead, who had cured the Rynmere plague. Faith saw the way they looked at her, they saw her and there was staring. She'd been well-known before, Faith knew that. But now? Now it was different. She was the ghost-whisperer, the woman who had led the army of ghosts against the army of the dead. For some, this was a marvellous thing. But for others? It was a quirky, interesting, unusual thing. It was an oddity which they wanted to find out about.

She made her way to the lecture room where she was due to start in ten bits and, as she opened it, Faith's eyebrows raised as she looked at the room. It was a lecture theatre that she knew, she'd given lectures here before. But she had never seen the room this busy. It was more than full, it was packed to the edges. Faith stopped dead in her tracks for a moment and she looked around with surprise on her pale face. She breathed in and walked into the room.

They weren't here for the learning, a lot of them. They were here for the showcase, the spectacle.

Well that was what they were here for. But her? Faith was here for the teaching.

And in Famula's name, this lot were going to learn something.

"Well, there's a lot of you," Faith said with a soft smile. A quiet murmur of amusement went around the room. "So, we're here to talk about blood. I understand that there are some of you who know more than others, but we're going to start at the basics, alright?" There were more than she'd like to have in the room, if she was honest; not because she felt overwhelmed by the numbers ~ although she was ~ but because she usually taught by using groups and groupwork. However, there were just too many people in this room and Faith considered that she was going to have to speak to the people who were organising her classes. Faith would rather do more classes than deal with numbers like this. However, she was a professional in all things and so, she made her way over to the desk at the front of the room, placing her bag down. Then she looked up at them.

"The more that we understand blood, the more we understand how our body works. All our bodies, for those with blood. But yet. There are so many differences in what each body holds. Red blood, silver blood, none at all. It is our job to know the similarities, the differences." There were all these eyes on her, and Faith smiled. Moving, she walked around to sit on the teacher desk and she decided that she was going to take control of this.

"Alright, so what I'd like to do is for you all to pair up with the person next to you." Faith paused long enough for them to follow her instructions and then she raised her voice - of course, that moment of them getting into pairs had caused a raised chatter to occur. "Alright, one of you is A, the other B. All of the As, I'd like you to go into the room next door, the laboratory is open for us. I want you to work in small groups there to look at the samples of blood. There are three technicians there who will work with you. I want you to take notes, because you're going to be providing information to your partner later."

Faith looked around and pointed to one of the people at the front. A young human female. "Here we go - your timer. Thank you." Half of the class trooped out and the other half settled down. That, she thought, was a much more manageable number of students. Once the door had closed, Faith turned to those still in the room. "Alright, then, we're going to get started on looking at differences in blood between races. While we do that, your companions are going to be looking at the same, but with actual blood. So, we'll be able to compare both types of learning."

She was able to get them working then - lots of targeted questions from her helped her to judge their level of knowledge. But, she wanted to make sure that she kept their attention too, so Faith rummaged in her bag and pulled out a small box. Flipping open the lid, she started asking questions. Her first question, they were all looking at the box and wondering at the small pieces of scrunched up paper. "What race has silver blood?" Faith asked, picking up a scrunched up piece of paper out of the box. Then, she motioned with a nod at the sev'ryn female with her hand up. "Biqaj," the young woman said and Faith nodded, then threw the piece of scrunched up paper to the student. "Most of them have questions on them. You ask the next one," Faith said with a smile. "But some of them aren't questions. Some of them are instructions, others are prizes. Answer the question asked, and you get a chance."

That had done it, she knew. They were interested and, in that moment she knew. They were going to learn.

The fact that the students were motivated kept them engaged and answering the questions. Every now and then, there was something other than a question - one student got a three-break free tuition session, another one got a group study session with five people of their choice. Faith - being who she was - made sure that the "gifts" were academic in nature, and the students responded well. Faith was more than pleased with their level of knowledge and, more than that, as she taught them there were lots of note-takers and people asked further questions. One of the paper balls which she threw to the successful answer of a question though caused a different response from the young man who had caught it. "It says here that I've won twenty bits," he said and Faith smiled. "At the end of the lecture, when we have twenty bits to go you - and your partner, when they come back in - get to choose what topic I talk about for the last twenty bits." There was an 'ooooooo' from the room and Faith smiled. "As long as I'm content that you've all learned sufficiently, of course."

The other half of the room came in just at the right moment and Faith then gave them time to work together, groups of three or four pairs - so six or eight students - sharing what they had learned. The blood-lab students had been engaged in practical tasks and they were able to share their knowledge. Watching the groups work, Faith was pleased, more than pleased. What she had hoped for was happening - they were making links between those who had been able to see the physical differences of blood types, and those who had learned the theory. She wanted that, for them to start gaining that understanding of the need to combine both theory and practice. There was a worksheet for them and an essay title for those who were completing this class for credit towards their degree. She would collect them and grade them, she arranged the means for them to submit (she had an office here) and was clear about when it would be returned by.

It got towards the end of the session and Faith smiled. "Alright, then, Jo," she said nodding towards the young man with the twenty bits. "What did you decide?" There were a lot of questions that he could ask, some of which would be difficult, but she was sure that the session had gone well enough that the students would be kind to her. So, she waited and she looked at him.

Jo, the young man in question had sand-blond hair and a laconic expression. "You're well known, famous, for being a medic, and your charity work. You use those a lot in your teaching. What is it about the war that you'd want to teach every student?"

Faith breathed in and looked at him, and slowly she nodded her head.

"What is it about the war that you'd want to teach every student?"

It was their expressions, Faith thought, that were horrifying. These were young people and they each one of them leaned forward slightly, gazes intent. Wanting to know something interesting, something about the conflict which excited them. Faith sat, perched on the edge of the large wooden teacher-desk with her back straight and her hands folded in her lap. It was those hands that she glanced down to, her fingers twisting together just slightly before becoming still. As she turned her gaze back to the students, she started to speak. "There is an ability which Vri has granted me," Faith said, softly. "It allows me to see, among other things, blood on your hands in a figurative sense. Every death, it leaves a mark on the person responsible, and I see it as blood on the hands." She smiled and gestured around the room, looking at each of them as she did.

"Lots of clean hands here," Faith said softly. Loud enough that they could hear, but still her tone gave the impression of them being in a quiet space together - an almost intimate conversation. But then she lifted up her own hands. They were an oddity to many, with her tattooed pale white skin and her black nails, but she lifted them and held them out almost in supplication, it seemed, palms upward. "Not these, though." It might seem incongruous to the young folks in the room watching her but Faith looked at them and smiled. "As a medic, responsibility for life and death means that these were this way - the way I see them - long before the way. But what I'd want to teach every student," As she spoke her left hand moved and she pointed to a spot on her right thumb. "I'd want to teach them about that drop of blood there."

As a teacher, she knew when she had her students' attention and Faith saw quite a few of them lean forward to look. Of course, they could see nothing. "That drop of blood appeared when Jack died," Faith said. "He was a victim of the Rynmere Plague and he helped me find the cure. I wanted, so badly, to help him but I couldn't." The raising of her shoulders was so slight that they might have missed it. Most of them didn't. "He was an older man, and he was very sweet. Supportive and encouraging and the plague took him." Faith's hand lowered slightly to give them a better view of the spot where they could see nothing other than pale white skin.

"If there was one thing about the war, that I'd teach every student?" Faith asked, looking at Jo with a smile. "Well, it's the same one thing about being a medic that I would teach them." She folded her hands back together in her lap as she spoke a truth which was fundamental to her, to who she was.

"Blood on your hands is inevitable," she said quietly. "But if you don't know where every drop comes from, if you can't account for each one?" This time, her shrug was more pronounced and she delivered her answer with a soft and apparently emotionless tone. "Then you risk losing yourself. Always know." She smiled at Jo and he nodded, just as the bell rang, sounding the end of the class.

This was both an interesting and nice read. The premise of so many people coming to the lecture, but mostly for the celebrity status of it was a good one but this took it further and made it even more with Faith looking to teach them regardless. How she handled the larger numbers was clever, pairing them off and splitting them up. Her ideas for engagement were interesting too. It definitely was a Grandmaster Teacher handling the situation!

I especially liked the '20 bits' part, and then the question asked about the war. Her answer was very poignant, given the context for it. Faith's handled so much, yet she still finds it in her to take on the challenge to teach others. That says a lot about her, how she views helping others, and how important she finds education to be.

Enjoy your rewards!
