Robin in Love pt. 1

718 Zi’da 41

A certain someone had been following him for the greater half of a break. It wasn’t a mystery, not with the persistent, electric scent of ether in the air. The defier had returned - far earlier than Mathias had been expecting him to -, and, like most Quacians, he had thought it best to play a game. While Robin had shown he was quite capable - and certainly his better in terms of raw, etheric strength -, he moved without fear of what the fuming young man was planning. He was well aware of his own limits and what Robin would need to overcome them.

Mads. The earth carried the name through the bedrock that crept under the ruined city. It whispered across fault lines, tracing along valleys and rolling hills. The Under seized with wild magic spent on a single purpose.

Finding that albino string-bean and knocking him down a peg.

The air sparked and cracked dry around him. Robin breathed in what little moisture weighed down the wind, breathing out almost-fire. Static jumped out from him, dancing along his skin. It bit into whoever chanced closest, yelps and gasps trailing him from behind. The earth urged him to be careful, to wait, a fragile mountain top holding out to avalanche. He ignored it.

And so he followed Mads’ every footstep from a distance. He was harder to sense, his magic keeping him almost invisible - almost. Where before there had been an odd absence, he could finally hear the rhythm of his feet against the stone, his breath on the wind. He wasn’t prepared - or he didn’t seem to be.

They wound their way through the streets and, slowly but surely, the numbers of passersby began to falter then dwindle steadily away until there was not a single soul left.

Just the two of them, one after the other.

Mathias had spent his entire life within Quacia - both in and around the city itself - and, while it was true he had not wandered down every street and ally nor knew infallibly to location of each and everything thing that could be found within the protective walls sealed by Condemnation, he knew exactly where it was people didn’t go. Taking the opposite path of every twist and turn the close-knit buildings and garbage blocked alleys allowed him that any other common Quacian might eventually led them to where they were now - isolated and far from any of the Dragoons who prowled the streets, purifiers in hand, sniffing out the remnants of violence that still flickered in the hearts of the restless Heaps.

The buildings - ancient, collapsing, and clearly unused for at least a decade if not longer - crowded close to one another, only two paths leading into the decrepit square who’s center was occupied with the remains of what vaguely resembled either the base of some long since toppled statue or the basin of a fountain. Most of the buildings’ entrances had been bricked over, the newer, brighter stone offensively novelle against the austere beauty of the past - even in such disrepair as it clinged to what little existence it had left.

Re: Robin in Love pt. 1

He made his way to the fountain, ducking under a low-hanging pillar that had fallen across the narrow alleyway, forcing those who wished to pass to nearly crawl under it and entirely blocked off those who were a head taller - or wider - than he. The pathway opposite was much more traversable and led into the outskirts of Lair - though not the district proper, rather a shadow of sin that was little more than empty warehouses and barely moving half-corpses.

Turning around, Mathias settled onto the edge of the square’s center-piece - whether fountain or statue at one point, it was little more than a glorified slab of stone now. His bright eyes stared expectantly at the fallen pillar as his spark burned cool and calm in his chest.

The city’s stone sang forever. The bricks and mortar promised collapse and ruin. Everything leaned one way or another, unsafe for anyone not him. Robin could feel the crumbling foundations, the way each crack gave room for more dirt and sand and everything that pushed and pushed.

The Under pulsed with his spells. He felt the slip-slide of earth against earth, under-fissures and hidden lakes. His magic lapsed around the trails that underlaid the city; the ground whispered of people long-ago digging and digging. Everything around him felt long-gone and empty, both the below and the on-top.

The pillar that blocked the alley shivered and jolted. It hummed with a quiet thrill, breaking into stones and then pebbles and then sand. It danced around his feet, trailing as he walked through the narrow alley.

Robin offered a quick wave to the man standing in the fountain’s shadow. “Hi Mads,” the wind carried his words into an echo. His magic sapped the air into something dry and harsh.

“Hello, Robin.” He rose from his seat, inclining his head politely, before he settled back down upon the edge of the stone.

“Nice trick last time.”

“Was it?” There was the distinct tone of uncertainty and doubt in his voice, as if he could quite recall what exactly it was Robin was referring to. “I must admit,” Voice ever calm, his bright eyes stared steady, never once leaving Robin’s face. “I find it surprising to see you in such… health.”

“Oh, I’ve come back from worse,” Robin smiled.

“Have you?” Rhetorical - but there was plenty of genuine interest in his eyes.
“I hadn’t thought you would be so peachy-clean either, but here we are,” his eyes trailed while Mads’ steadied. No weapons, but that wasn’t a surprise. Zipper and Hans hadn’t carried any. Robin supposed most mages didn’t -- he hadn’t carried his own daggers in arcs. “Shame about your cult friends,” he added, an afterthought.

The earth had ate well. He guessed the Wounded God did too.

Mathias didn’t seem worried about the deceased at all. Instead, he raised a brow as he leaned a bit farther back, curiosity playing in his tone. “What is ‘peachy’?”

“An expression. Means you’re not dead,” Robin shrugged, taking a careful look at his nails. They were speckled with dirt and chipped stone.

Re: Robin in Love pt. 1

“Oh.” Mathias could smell ether in the air, and his own was ready as always, but he couldn’t tell what it was the defier was planning - if he even planned anything else. “Then you seem ‘peachy-clean’, as well. How fortunate for you.”

“Yeah, well,” fortunate for him, unlucky for Robin. “So. Abrogation. Shield-magic, right?” He asked in a tone that suggested more insult than question. The Seekers, ever looking for more-than-capable recruits had jumped at the idea of a free-agent like Mads. It hadn’t taken much to get a quick overview of the most annoying magic ever. “The Seekers asked about you. Seemed interested.”

Mathias’ head tilted slightly to the side, brow just barely furrowing. “Is that why you are here? At the behest of your betters?” There wasn’t a hint of anything but a calmly asked question; but the word choice was more than suspect.

“Partly,” he crossed his arms, his lips pursing; hierarchy wasn’t anything he liked, less so when someone might be claimed his ‘better’. “Also wanted to check on you,” because if Mads was doing less than ‘peachy’ he might be able to finish the shield off. Abrogation or not, if that lava had done its job there’d be less of Mads to worry about.

Mathias’ lips turned a slight smile at that.

“Also wanted to know why you approached me. Heard most shields keep their distance unless ordered,” he paused, a single spark lancing from his skin to the ground in a quick pop, “Are you kept, Mads? Anyone asking you to keep an eye on me?”

Without a moment of hesitation, Mathias shook his head. “No one is asking me to do anything.” His turn to pause as he leveled his too bright gaze back to Robin’s face, he added a curious, “Not yet.”

Robin poked his tongue at his cheek, slowly nodding his head. “So the next question is, why’d you approach me?”

“The next or the first?” His subtle smile remained, carefully and deliberately pressed into his tone.

He dug a heel into the dusty soil, tapping into the quiet earth and pushing more magic into the deep. “Interrogation already started, babe. You aren’t feeling the question? I can ask others.” If anything, Robin was accommodating. Sometimes.

Raising both hands in front of him, fingers casually splayed, Mathias shook his head. “‘Why’ is a fine question.” Folding them one over the other in his lap, his own ether ran cold just below the thin layer of his smooth, marble-like skin. “The elements accommodate you - no… ‘adore’ is the better word, is it not?” He spoke the latter softly, more to himself than the dark haired man that still lingered at the courtyard’s entrance. “Someone as beloved as that is surely worth at least a passing interest, are they not?”

“We have a partnership,” he clipped back, his tone sharper, “Mutual respect might be the best, if you’re looking to describe us.”

Mathias’ brows raised in interest, though he only nodded mutely at the correction.

Re: Robin in Love pt. 1

Robin leaned against the archway he stood in, shoulders against aging stone. Everything warned against Mads. “And I’d say it was a bit more than a passing interest.”

“Would you?”

“I’ve been tested before and I didn’t like it,” he listened to the wind as it pressed ever closer to the shield. He’d know the moment he tried another spell. “But those didn’t end with a massacre, so bonus points for creativity, I guess.”

“True, I admit I may have... overestimated your self-control.” The reply was passing, almost wistful, though his eyes never once lost their intensity.

“Most people tend to do that.” Robin smirked, his head cocked to the side. “Don’t think it ever goes well.”

“I… see.” For a moment, Mathias’ face settled into a purely blank stare, before the slight smile returned. What he saw, however, didn’t seem to make its way into tone or expression.

“You sound confused. Sad I didn’t bite the bait?” He assumed that’s what he was doing. Control hadn’t been an issue for Robin, not now or ever. The elements were free, unreigned, and wholly themselves. Mages seemed to consider themselves all the better for their supposed control. Masters over something eating them away at the core. Robin was happy to settle for a working partnership.

“No.” There was nothing else offered than the polite clarification.

“Good. Another point for not being an idiot,” Dust settled over his boots and pant-legs

“What are these… ‘points’?” Curiosity seemed to be the only genuine thing his voice was capable of replicating - though it was difficult to tell considering the considerably limited range of expression he seemed to employ. “Are we playing a game?” Here, his voice rose just slightly - interest, maybe.

“Sure,” he smiled like a crocodile waiting for a fish, “Sure. We’re playing a game a questions. I asked one and now it’s your turn. The winner gets…,” he hummed, his fingers tapping lightly against his chin. “What do you think? You get a point for answering a question truthfully and completely, but what are we playing for, Shield?”

“I am no certain how I might know, it is your game, after all.” The interest was still there, sparks in that too-bright stare. “What do you usually play for?”

His smile widened as he pulled out a wolf-shaped pendant. “I play for everything. This necklace? Yours if you answer more questions than me.”

The blonde haired man blinked three times in rapid succession before he quite succinctly and without any apparent hidden coyness asked directly, “Why in the world would I want… that?”

“It’s a favor from a real immortal. Goddess of the hunt, Karem. She owes me big time,” He watched Mads’ face for a reaction.

What he got was yet another completely blank stare that lasted perhaps a trill or too longer than before. Blinking, polite smile returning, Mads never once looked away nor hesitated once his expression shifted back into that carefully crafted mask. “No thank you.”

Robin frowned, annoyed, “Fine,” he put it back under his shirt, “But a favor from an immortal isn’t-

Re: Robin in Love pt. 1

“Anything I want? Yes. You are quite right.” There was no suggestion of playfulness in his voice, only the calm, clear matter-of-fact tone that seemed to be his natural timbre.

“You’d get any favor you’d want.”

Mathias raised a brow, but Robin couldn’t tell whether it was in interest or disdain - nothing else on the other man’s face even moved.

“A smart, faithful Blooded-God cultist might be able to think of something useful.”

“A smart follower of the Scarlet Belief would have sought to sever your head from your shoulders,” he started, not a hint of aggression in his voice. “And a faithful one would have done it already.”

Robin rolled his eyes, “You already tried.”

“Did I?” The deliberate, playful smile flashed for a moment before the polite curve returned.

“I think you did,” Robin answered back, his smile stretched tighter.

Mathias’ brows rose for a moment as his lips turned a silent, “Oh.”, but he gave no other indication as to the truth of the matter one way or another.

“But fine. We do something simpler. We bet a favor. I’ll even swear to He-Who-Cuts,” or whatever they named the bloody boogieman. “Or better yet, how about we play this way. I get a favor and your god gets my soul?”

“Foreigners,” Mathias chuckled, the sound entirely empty, more gesture than anything. “The Wounded God will use your soul as bindings regardless of whether you offer it or no; so they say.”

“Beautiful,” He said, careful not to roll his eyes again. As much as he wanted to, to spit on Mads’ imaginary friend, the shield did have answers. Probably. He breathed in-and-out. “So what do you want, then?” Besides a city not ravaged by a garden.

For the first time, Mathias seemed to actively consider the question. Whether that was progress or regression remained to be seen. “Your blood.” As ever, his voice was calm; Robin might have imagined the other man was asking for a glass of water or request he give him a handful of small coins if he hadn’t heard the words precisely as they’d been intended.

“Kinky,” although a small part of him wondered if he bled red anymore, but that wasn’t his prime concern. “But yeah, sure, whatever. You win, you get my blood. I win, I get a favor. Any favor,” there was obviously, the logistical question of getting Mads to complete his ask, but again, not an immediate issue.

“Very well.” Mathias didn’t seem to grasp the gravity of what he was offering. Not a good sign, as far as collecting was concerned.

“Your turn, your question.”

“Four to three, in favor of me, yes,” he started. “Why are you here, Robin?” There was no worry or concern or giddy excitement. Just the question.

“Like here, here? Or in Quacia?”

“Let us start with Quacia.”

“A transmuter wants me dead. I fled and found refuge with the Seekers,” Again, his nails seemed more interesting than anything else around him.

“Oh.”

Re: Robin in Love pt. 1

“Are you working for anyone, currently?”

“Currently, no.” He didn’t waste time on hesitation. “And why are you ‘here’ here?”

“I wanted to ask you some questions,” he shrugged his shoulders, “And I thought about killing you.” He still did. He wondered how much of his magic Mads could manage. He wondered if he’d even be able to breach his shields. Maybe it wasn’t even worth it.

Mathias merely continued to smile that empty smile. It seemed he wasn’t surprised - if he ever really was.

“You let me follow you,” he said, “Why?”

“Curiosity.” Mathias continued to stare, eyes piercing. “What questions did you wish to ask?”

“Why are you so curious about me?”

He blinked, though if it was because it was merely his wetting his eyes or because the question wasn’t one he’d expected… He waved a hand vaguely toward the shifting state of the elements all around the defier. “I find anything unusual curious.” Settling the hand back into his lap, his eyes flicked down and up in a quick movement, briefly noting the entirety of the other man beyond just his eyes and face. “And why is it you seem to think my interest is unwarranted?”

Robin watch the stone-still man as he blinked - slowly, like he was purposefully dragging the time it took him to close and open his eyes. “But I’m not unusual. Not to you,” he started, the wind picking up behind him, “You’re an Abrogant. Your job is to know the different magics,” he had to be careful not to list blanket statements.

Mathias raised a brow but said nothing.

No points for either of them if he forgot his questions. “Am I the first defiar you’ve met?”

“You are not.” His head tilted to the side, a careful display of curiosity. “Am I the first abrogant you have met?”

“Yes.” A simple reply, easy, but Robin shifted uncomfortably on his feet. A point for his answer, but a strike for showing a weakness. His grasp on the shield magic was only enough to know it existed and, of course, everything Mads had done last time. “If I’m not the first, then why am I so unusual?”

The earth slowly collapsed below him, keeping the surface intact. All the quicker if he had to escape. A door to the deep tunnels beneath.

“You are still alive.” He stated, as simply as if he’d told Robin that they were standing upon stone. “Do I frighten you, Robin?” There was nothing intimidating in voice - a calm question without aggression. Yet, those too bright eyes continued to burn with all the intensity of the sun above.

Feedback
This was a tricky thread to review, mostly because the way you've written it makes it very difficult to understand who is saying what. It gets to the point, in places, where it is in fact wholly indecipherable. I would very strongly urge you both to consider this when undertaking threads in this way. Your writing individually is lovely - your pcs are well played. But the story is more-or-less unfathomable in places, which is a very real shame. Please do consider this in future threads.

That being said, you tell a very clear and cohesive story, and your writing is of a very good standard. Please do let me know if you've got any questions.
