The Courage

It had been six trials since Wendell had walked in on her one time escapade with Patrick and had, surprisingly, decided to join them. It had taken those six trials for her to work up the courage to face Wendell again, finding herself walking to his house that night. Almost instantly they had fallen onto each other, Wendell being just as rough as he had been those nights ago. It had been fiery and heated, unlike the slower and passionate pace they had been at before. At the end they had both been left lying in his bed gasping for air.

A lantern shone from the other room and there were a few creamy candles burning on the table beside the bed. It cast a long orange light over their bodies that were tangled in the sheets. When Rei had finally managed to catch her breath, she let out a long sigh. She rose from the bed, the sheets falling from her form, and moved to the other room where she rummaged around to find a bottle of wine and two glasses. She set the on the table beside the bed and poured them both a glass. Handing Wendell his, she got back beneath the sheets, disliking the cool nip in the air.

“Wendell,” she began, taking a sip of the rich red wine in her glass. “Talk to me. I know what… what you saw didn’t exactly please you. But I think you should know…” Rei swirled the liquid in the glass, watching the red liquid slosh around as she debated how to form her next words. “I’m- I am very… infatuated with you. I care for you very much. I don’t know what I was doing, I want to be your woman, as you said.” She was propped up on her side with the glass in hand. A finger ran along the muscle of his arm. Her stomach was in knots and there was a fluttering in the chest at the thought of what he might say. Though the fact that she was in his bed was hopeful. She leaned over and pressed a tender kiss to his lips, a show of affection.

Wendell always looked quite relaxed after their vigorous acts of intimacy, and tonight was no different. His eyes had followed Rei’s bare form in the dim light and as she returned to the bed he propped himself up on his side and accepted the glass of red wine she had offered. Sex and wine, if Rei really wanted to know the way to his heart she was making a good start. He drank the wine like water and leaned across her body to set the empty glass down, finding a light bruise on the woman’s neck that still lingered from their last encounter, one they had shared with Patrick.

The woman was right, he hadn't been pleased about the sight he had walked in on, but there was no going back now or changing the past. The truth was that he liked Rei and very much enjoyed her company, but Wendell wasn't a perfect man, he had his faults, one that included being very protective of what he considered his. Rei was not his, but for a time he had hoped she might be. He stole the wine glass from her hand and pushed it aside, trying for round two, hoping to convince Rei with an assault of kisses that she would prefer that over talking to him, but the woman was adamant and managed to stop him.

Frustrated, Wendell let out a sigh and returned to his side, head propped up against a closed fist. “What do you want me to tell you, gorgeous? You're fun, beautiful, compassionate, smart?” he smiled, amused. “I bet you have plenty of guys to tell you that. Truth is I'm not looking for anything,” he sat up, the sheets pooling across his lap, “I'm just a good time,” the man deemed himself, he wasn't like Patrick, he wasn't overly kind or smart, or even interesting, ladies came to him for one thing, a long romp between the sheets that made them feel good about themselves for ten minutes before they realised that Wendell was not like their husbands or boyfriends. He wasn't the kind of guy they took to meet their parents or fantasised about raising a family with. The man was simply a good time.

“I enjoy your company, but then I enjoy a lot of company,” he admitted. Perhaps his words were a little cold, but this was Wendell’s way of protecting himself.

Try as he might to convince her with kisses and caresses that she would rather be doing anything other than talking, she couldn’t stop now. It had taken her six trials to work up the courage to face him, six trials to work up the guts to tell him that she cared about him.. that the night he saw had been a misstep on her part, a blip in her path that she had not intended to make. She could tell he was frustrated with her but had not expected the reaction. It was so cold, so callous. It was unlike Wendell had ever been.

“What?” She nearly gasped it. Had he not made the claiming statement that she was his woman? Has he not beaten some worthless drunk to a pulp for raising his hand to her? Had he not physically claimed her with a kiss in front of his friends? Her eyes followed him as he sat up. She took a long swallow of wine, choking back the large lump in her throat that formed as she tried not to break in front of him. Rei set down the glass a little harder on the table than she had intended, nearly chipping the glass.

“No, I don’t,” she whispered, her voice low and quivering. Her hand knotted in the sheets, squeezing the fabric so hard that her knuckles turned white. Rei surprised even herself when her hand flew up and slapped him clean across the face. There was a red mark on his stubbly cheek where her hand had struck. “You aren’t just some night of fun, some good time in the sheets. If that was all you were why would I bother coming back? Coming to you when I was hurt? Bother spending time with you doing other things?”

She snatched the glass hastily from the table, downing what was left in the glass and pouring herself another. “Is that what it is to you then? You stormed down to the Dust Quarter to defend your harlot’s honor? Maybe you can sell that crock to your friends, but you won’t to me.”

The slap had left one side of his face stinging, as if he had leaned too close to the fire and singed the hairs from his cheek, and yet, the slap was felt in other places, lower down where desire often swelled. Wendell let the woman say her piece, it wasn't that he had been shocked into silence, the man had been slapped by plenty of women before, but this was Rei, she didn't strike him as the kind of girl that slapped a man, even in anger.

He shoved the glass from her hand and barely flinched as it shattered across the ground, painting the floor red. There was a kiss that followed, a fighting, breathless, animalistic kiss that would more than likely end with Wendell earning himself a blood lip. There came a pause as blue eyes flickered between gazing upon her own and the shape of her mouth. Rei knew him better than he gave her credit and the idea of her having paid attention all this time turned him on, though, in reality, the slap had done most of that.

“Aren't you just a peach,” he smirked, perhaps if he was lucky she would try to wipe that smug little smile off his face too. Was it so terrible that he liked her when she was angry? The truth was, Wendell had never claimed any woman as his own before, he knew it was bad for business, and for a while, he had worried about what Rei might think of his other line of work in a way that he had never been concerned before. “You want to be my woman?” he asked. “Then you need to know something…”

The room, as small as it was, echoed with the shattering of the glass. She made a move to look over the edge of the bed, to see the damage Wendell had caused by shoving the glass out of her hand, but she was taken by his lips. They devoured hers and at first she tried to shove against his chest. It only deepened the kiss as she fell into it herself, the primal desires of them both coming on. She bit his lip so hard that the coppery taste of blood came to her mouth and mixed with the sweetness of the wine.

When she pulled away, his lip was still bubbling a little bit of blood and she had a crimson stain across her lip. She wiped it away with the back of her hand, smearing the blood across the skin there. “I do my best to be a peach,” she retorted, finding that the smug little smile on his face stirred her anger a bit but also set a small fire in her loins. He asked if she wanted to be his woman, a question she didn’t feel the need to answer because it had already been answered. Then, he stated that she needed to know something.

What could he possibly have not told her that was bad that he was acting as if telling her might change her mind on the matter. She knew what she wanted. Rei wanted him, fully, like no other woman would have. She knew from what he had said that he was experienced and that he had been privy to many good times, but that didn’t bother her. Those didn’t mean anything. This… this meant something. Her blue eyes wandered up to his, locking on his gaze. A hand reached over and pressed against a stubbly cheek. “What could you possibly be hiding that would scare me?” She smiled then, a smile filled with many different emotions. “As long as you come home to me and your desire for me is not robbed of you, then what you do doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t even matter if you were a male prostitute.”

With them both sitting up, Rei shifted in the bed until she was sitting in his lap. She grabbed his hands and pulled his arms around her, taking comfort in their strength. Leaning her face against his arm, she smiled into the flesh before trailing a few soft kisses there.

“There is nothing in this world that could rob me of my desire for you,” he admitted. It wasn't that the man had lost his nerve, but Rei’s words said that she either already knew, had guessed, or truly didn't care about his activities outside of their bedroom. Honestly, Wendell had never met a more perfect woman, for him anyway, she was perfect.

Beefy arms closed around her narrow waist and he pressed his lips to her shoulder. “I work nights,” was all he was willing to tell her, the only thing he needed to say it seemed, she didn't need the ugly details, he didn't want her mind poisoning the thought of them making a go of a real relationship.

A rough hand went down the length of her back before being lifted again slowly, there was no one in the world he would have rather been with at that exact moment in time, and the overwhelming realisation caused him to draw back and seek out her mouth. The kiss was achingly slow, tantalising, and honest, even if his words had not parted with the whole truth, it would be enough for now.

After breaking the kiss, Wendell combed Rei’s hair from her face with a gentle hand and smiled. She had probably noticed by now that all of his smiles made him appear mischievous, like he was always up to something or about to be. Rei had come in and goaded him into the physical act of love before choosing to speak up, and Wendell had decided that he wasn't about to let her go home without round two.

The woman's lower lip was taken to return the sharp nip, only his affections did not draw blood. He kissed down her neck with a fever and closed his hand against her backside to lift her up, just enough to join them again. A delicious shiver shook his form, a breathy, satisfied little sigh released against her shoulder where he then bit down before lying back against the bed to let Rei work her magic.

Comments: So, this thread was one of the most emotionally charged ones I've seen here. I've done a good job of avoiding most of your smut, but this thread makes me want to read them. Rei and Wendell are in love, deal with it. It's about time someone told you. LOVE DARNIT. Excellent thread. I'm a fan.
