Knowledge

Overview

Standing Trials has 2 ways in which we measure Skill progress for a pc. These Skill Points (or Experience Points) and Knowledge.

Character Creation

Skills Points

  • Players start with:
    • 2 x skills at Competent
    • 3 x skills at Novice
    • 1 x Novice Skill which is the "Racial Bonus" Skill
  • At startup pcs are given the points and knowledge in these skills.

Knowledge

Knowledge is what is used to help your character understand the world around them, whether that's from the skills they learn, the people they know, or anything else from the land, sea, and skies.

  • Players start with:
    • 11 knowledge in each of their two Competent Skills.
    • 5 knowledge in their Racial Bonus Skill
    • 2 knowledge in each of their three other Novice Skills.
  • Players are also permitted non-skill knowledges from this list. These knowledges are to allow you to flesh out your character's background. They must fit your character's history and you are permitted up to 10. These are optional.
  • A starter PC would probably know / have heard of all PCs with over 750 renown. Those are listed here
  • A starter PC would almost certainly know / have heard of all PCs with over 1000 renown. Those are listed here
  • You may either format your knowledge fully (eg: Cooking: Cooking Biscuits for too long leads to burning) or you can record the number of knowledge you have (Cooking x 1). If you choose to format your knowledge, you may not claim duplicate knowledge, because while a character may sharpen their skills by repetition, knowledge can only be learned once. While this is obviously taken on faith in the case of numbered knowledge, claiming knowledge repeatedly for the same thing (eg: baking bread) across various threads this will be picked up by peer reviewers.
  • You MUST have a track of your knowledge. If you use the full-format, you can simply have the knowledge written in your CS. If you are required to prove where it is from (if there's a query on it for some reason) - then it is your responsibility to find the thread. If you choose to simply record the number, that must be linked.

Requesting Knowledge

Before requesting Knowledge in a review request, read through [this] guide. It will help you understand what knowledge is.

If you want some examples of existing knowledge, each skill has them in the skill write up. Have a look there.

Is that literally all I know?

No, not necessarily! Some things are Common Knowledge on Idalos, and may be assumed.

Languages:

  • Unless your Starter Package or Race says differently, you are allowed two maximum, one Fluent and one Broken. [Note: Full eídisi have the option to start with two Fluent and one Broken. ]

CS Rewards

When Full Character Sheets are approved by the Staff, they may add extra Skills and Knowledge. The value of these points is entirely dependent on the depth - and thus effort - put into the writing of the CS (and in particular the history of the character). If you are awarded Skills or Knowledge when your CS is approved, it will be added to your Character Wiki.

When listing all Starting Skills and Knowledge, you must add a note beside the value so that the Prophets are aware of how you attained skills and when. The Key for this is:

  • (SP): Starting Package
  • (RB): Racial Bonus
  • (FT): Fast Track
  • (SB): Slavery Bonus
  • (MP): Mer Bonus
  • (IM): Skill Bonus as part of Immortal Mark
  • (HI): History Non-Skill Knowledges

For XP and Knowledge awarded on approval of your Full CS, then use the following 2 letter combinations:

  • (AV): Award from Avalon
  • (BK): Award from Basilisk
  • (DB): Award from Darius Baer
  • (DO): Award from Doran
  • (FA): Award from Fate
  • (JA): Award from Jackalope
  • (ML): Award from Maltruism
  • (MK): Award from Munchkin
  • (PG): Award from Pegasus
  • (PB): Award from Pig Boy
  • (SQ): Award from Squirrel
  • (TE): Award from Tempest
  • (VU): Award from Vulpes

If the volunteer who gave you approval rewards isn't there, use an appropriate code.
