Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Brontide (Horse)
Image
Developed by Natalia Gregorios
Origins: Brontides are a naturally occurring breed that has its beginnings in the Scalvoris Mountains. Muscular yet agile, this breed is perfect for traversing unpredictable mountain terrain.
Price: Tier 5
Habitat: Scalvoris Mountains
Lifespan and Development: Typical Weight of a Brontide is 1,800 to 2,600 pounds, and height can be between 15 hands (60 inches) to 19 hands (76 inches). Their body composition is muscular with a broad, flat forehead. The typical lifespan for a Brontide is 25-30 arcs.
Diet: A Brontide typically eats more than an average-size horse. It can easily go through 30 pounds of quality hay and 5 pounds of grain in a day.
Temperament: Sweet, tolerant, and easygoing, these majestic horses are ideal for those who lack the experience in horse ownership that many other breeds require. They're known as easy keepers that are able to adapt to many different climates and conditions.
Abilities: Brontides are most often seen pulling carriages, sleighs, wagons, and vardos. Their strength and stamina also make them ideal for use in logging and on farms. Riders who prefer large horses often choose Brontides for their willingness and adaptability.
Weaknesses: They eat a lot. Owners need to be able to keep up with their diet requirements.

Kairos (Horse)
Image
Developed by Natalia Gregorios
Origins: Originating in the woods of Sweetwine, the Kairos (Ki-rose) breed is known as an agility breed, able to move through many different types of terrain easily being surefooted.
Price: Tier 5
Habitat: The preferred habitat of the Kairos is the woods of Sweetwine.
Lifespan and Development: The trademark of the Karios is their short backs and dappled coloring. While on the smaller side (14.1-15.1 hh), they are known to be sturdy (with good bone density). Kairos typically live 25-30 arcs. There are documented instances of them living well into their 40’s and the breed is known for longer lifespans than average.
Diet: Quality hay and grain. They love apples and due to their thinner composition, can tolerate the sugar content of fruits and vegetables much more easily than larger breeds.
Temperament: Free-spirited but friendly, these horses bond quickly to their owners. They are eager to please and easy trainers, making them a popular choice for transportation.
Abilities: Good balance, coordination, and the ability to switch between tasks are the hallmarks of the Kairos. Having originated in the woods of Sweetwine, the Kairos are a common breed of agility horse.
Weaknesses: Strength - for what the Kairos have in balance, coordination, and quick-thinking, they lose in their ability to carry larger riders or pull wagons.

Valcyon (Horse)
Image
Developed by Natalia Gregorios
Origins A created breed in Almund, the Valcyon (Val-cee-on) breed was made for speed, fulfilling a need for messenger horses
Price: Tier 5
Habitat: The few wild herds are within the wilds around Almund. Most Valcyon are bred and trained.
Lifespan and Development: The typical Valcyon ranges from 15.2 to 17.0 hands high, averaging 16 hands. Valcyons have a well-chiseled head on a long neck, high withers, a deep chest, a short back, good depth of hindquarters, a lean body, and long legs. The Valcyon can live between 20 - 25 years, depending on the stresses put on its body over its lifespan.
Diet: Unlike other horses who need more roughage (quality hay) than grain, the Valcyon needs more whole grain and seed meals due to it's increased protein needs.
Temperament: Bold and spirited.
Abilities: The Valcyon is bred for speed and athleticism.
Weaknesses: The lifespan of the Valcyon is unusual for a horse. It is directly tied to the activities it endures during its lifespan. A Valycon that is ridden for pleasure will generally live about 25 years while one that is pushed to it's limits in the military or as a messenger horse will likely live 18-20 years. It is unknown why.

Drawer Dragon
Image
Developed by Oram Mednix
Price: WT 8
Habitat: Faldrass Badlands, mainly in Faldrun’s Knife Drawer. The Drawer Dragon is an ambush predator that stalks ravines and gullies that offer both water and shade in which to hide.
Lifespan and Development: Drawer Dragons lay eggs in clutches of twenty or so in dark recesses far back in ravines. Once hatched, the monitors reach maturity in about an arc. They typically live 5-10 arcs in the wild, but can potentially live as long as 20 in ideal conditions. They typically grow to a length of about 3 feet and weigh about 20-25 pounds. They have matte black scales that blend in well with their environment and make them hard to detect.
Diet: Carnivorous. Drawer Dragons will hunt anything, including much larger animals.
Temperament: Aggressive and territorial.
Abilities: Drawer Dragons have the ability to drain their prey’s body heat through their bite. They use this ability to subdue larger prey, including humanoids. A Drawer Dragon will typically ambush their quarry from a shaded hiding place and then latch on to whatever exposed body part they can sink their sharp, barbed teeth into. They will cling stubbornly with their powerful jaws while they drain the victim’s body heat. An active adult human can be set shivering within about 10 trills of continuous biting, and grow seriously weakened and dangerously hypothermic in about a bit, if the creature’s grip is not somehow released. This usually entails killing or at least seriously injuring the Drawer Dragon, as they are not easily discouraged. Although they are solitary and not pack hunters, it is not unheard-of for a second monitor to opportunistically jump prey already caught by a first. Having two lizards draining body heat does not quite double the rate of hypothermia, but it does increase it by about 40 percent. No one knows why this is.

Weaknesses: Drawer Dragons are themselves susceptible to cold and cold-based attacks, as they rely heavily on external heat to power their metabolisms. They will not attack certain species, such as Ellune.

Collecting It

Using It
-- Use 1 Drawer Dragon teeth and saliva remain ice cold even in warm surroundings. This makes them of interest to alchemists.
-- Use 2 Drawer Dragon blood remains hot for some time (three trials even in cool weather) after the animal dies. It continues to absorb heat even after it has reached what ought to be thermal equilibrium. Again, this makes the blood interesting to alchemists.
— Use 3 Drawer Dragon hide has special thermal properties; it absorbs far more heat from the “skin” side than it allows out through the “hide” side. This makes it especially useful for coverings meant to keep heat inside (such as cold-weather boots, skins for warmed liquids, etc.)

Killing It
-- Competent. Drawer Dragons do not have any special resistances, so they can be killed the same way any monitor lizard can, in addition to being susceptible to cold.
Capturing It
-- Expert.
Danger
-- See Abilities. Not tameable. Even monitors hatched in captivity will remain a danger.
Tending It
-- Master. The Drawer Dragon needs a steady supply of live, warm-blooded prey

Lifespan and Development: Typically live about 10 arcs. Breeding is during Ashan, with eggs hatching near the end of that season. Jecklers usually reach full maturity by the beginning of the Cold Cycle.
Diet: Small terrestrial animals, including mice and snakes. Are potentially useful for controlling unwelcome vermin and snake populations.
Temperament: The jeckler is a highly social animal. It is actually quite relaxed and tolerant of people when not shouting its head off during roosting, and will even accept handouts from people.
Abilities:
Ability 1 Laughing call. The jeckler has a loud, raucous call that reminds some people of laughter. Flocks of jecklers roosting in the evening can make an almost intolerable amount of noise.
Ability 2 Flight.
Weaknesses:
Weakness 1 Small, fairly fragile bird.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Colossithecus
Image
Developed by Ralgar Warborn
Price: Pelts: 5 WP for a pelt. Alive: N/A, due to the aggressive nature of these creatures

Habitat: Residing in the central regions of the Scaltoth Jungle, typically in the areas with thick trees and easy prey, the Colossithecus is the Apex predator in many parts of Scaltoth. These powerful creatures are sought after by the tribes for their size and power, though training them is difficult even for the bravest adventurer. Digging themselves out big holes to rest and eat in, the Colossithecus sleeps in large piles of rocks and leaves, as well as some being observed using the carcasses of animals to decorate their territory as an intimidation tactic and to mark the land that is theirs.

Oftentimes, if two non-mating Colossithecus find one another in the wild, they will battle to claim the territory of the other - expanding their hunting grounds massively.

Lifespan and Development: Living upwards of thirty years, Colossithecus are powerful giants that reach the full size of 8'6" around their sixth Arc. Built from powerful muscles, razor-sharp claws, and teeth designed to rip flesh apart - these beings are everything an Apex predator should be. Their antlers are often used to charge into bigger creatures, tackling it to the ground, or to throw aside anything smaller than them. Throughout their lives the Colossithecus will live in isolation, their parents leaving them to fend for themselves at one arc old to prove themselves. The only time these creatures are seen in pairs is for reproduction when a mating pair will settle down for a Cycle together, sharing territory and having anywhere from 3 to 10 offspring during this time. The Colossithecus is known for the mass of babies it can have in a small amount of time, the gestation period lasting an abnormally short amount of time. However, because of the isolation that the young live in, these offspring rarely survive - meaning that only the toughest Colossithecus ever see adulthood. Usually, one of the group of offspring will make it past six Arcs old.

Diet: Carnivorous, the Colossithecus feeds solely on meats, eating creatures of any size but typically hunting deers or larger. While the beasts will eat anything they can, they lean towards a mixed variety, sometimes going out of their way to hunt new meats. Humans and other sentient beings have been killed for food by these creatures many times in the tribes, giving them a dangerous reputation to match their stature. After a big feast, the creature enters a state of rest, eating in big bulks then pausing for hours at a time, before going back on a big hunt.

Temperament: Outwardly hostile to any creature in their territory and near their sleeping area, these creatures are only peaceful to those that have tamed them or when they are no longer hungry so have no need to hunt. It is during this time that many will attempt to tame and impress a Colossithecus with their unique and dangerous means of being tamed.

First, one must approach the creature peacefully, requiring a high level of animal training, discipline or other potential skills used. As they do this they must be holding a trophy of a great beast, something that would impress the Apex of the Scaltoth trees. Some have said that a mass of pelts from smaller creatures has worked as well, while others claim this failed and simply insulted the proud creature. Then, with the pelt(s) in hand, they must lay it out as an offering to the big beast. Should the creature be impressed, it will allow the person to approach. This begins the bond between both creature and man, the beast allowing the person to enter their territory and even stay there.

After some time of the tamer and beast living, hunting, and resting near each other - the Colossithecus will be considered "trained", and will become accepting of the person that befriended them, fighting alongside them. Why this instinct exists is currently unknown, especially because of the solitary nature of the beast. Because of this taming method and the sheer power of the Colossithecus, they are used commonly in wars between the Scaltoth tribes, swaying battles and taking out many enemy tribesmen.

Abilities: Raw muscle mass alone makes these creatures strong foes, as well as the sharp claws and razor-sharp fangs. These beasts are incredibly durable, are strong enough to rip through trees with just a few swings, and can charge slightly faster than a typical human.

Weaknesses: Their isolation typically makes them vulnerable, as does the young being released into the wild on their own. Their primary weakness is the time they rest after a long meal and their lack of ranged attack. Otherwise, they have no real weakness, needing to be bested by someone with high skill.

When trained, they can not be used alongside other Colossithecus, as they are prone to fighting their own kind. As well as this, they typically do not respond well to other people in general, only liking the presence or company of the person that trained them. They require their territory the same way a wild creature would, meaning they can not be brought to a domestic environment. With some training they can grow used to other people and creatures, using small exposure and progressively allowing them to feel more comfortable, but this will never apply to other Colossithecus. Because of this, it isn't likely or feasible to see more than one of these trained by the same group or tribe. As well as this, other animals will be afraid of the Colossithecus, likely to avoid it or run at its presence until enough time has gone by that they can function together.

Snowpoke Tortoise
Image
Developed by Mädärä Kisaik Ciuruọrun sọ Kufuata Karo Kashe Däuä, Tìfmi Härumtä sọ anou Faewun Samuwar, ọbavi sọ tẹlẹ, igbaradi sọ anou tabi ọludïbọ, Saoire's chieja kẹmïkälï kukïrï, Akoko Nọọsi
Price: ~ Cannot be bought.
Habitat: ~ Ishallr and any snowy areas. It migrates during the Winter to all over the Island.
Lifespan and Development: Snowpoke Tortoises were formed around lost gifts that fell astray from Saoire's bag of gifts when she's about delivering them. The gift fell into the snow and was subsequently covered in Zi'da snows. Given the care that Saoire dedicates to the process of gift giving, this is a rare event. From there, it makes it's way from wherever it fell onto Ishallr, or to the home of one who needs holiday cheer. There, it will spend the winter outside, and then melt during the spring to reveal a special gift made especially for the one who found it and gave it care. It cannot be harvested for a gift beforehand. Anyone who tries to butcher a snowpoke will find a lump of coal at its center.
Diet: Love and kindness.
Temperament: A loving and caring tortoise, it couldn't harm a fly.
Abilities:
Ability 1 ~ Carries the perfect gift which forms after spending a winter with the person they find a home with. (Non-magical gifts only, with the exception of approved signature items.)
Ability 2 ~ Has a lump of coal at its center for anyone who tries to harvest a gift.
Weaknesses:
Weakness 1 ~ Very vulnerable to shovels. It's made of snow so vulnerable to heat/fire/warmer seasons.
Weakness 2 ~ It's quite slow.

Ember Puffin
Image
Developed by Elisabeth Angelus
Overview: Ember Puffins are a breed of Puffin found exclusively on Faldrass Island. A key characteristic of this breed is their craving of heat, which drives them in colder weather to the sides of the volcano where they burrow and enter hibernation. From Ashan to Zi'da, they prefer to live on the coasts of Faldrass. They have a distinctive call, sounding like "Or-am....Or-am"
Price: Tier 6
Habitat: Ember Puffins commonly nest on cliff sides and inside caves, diving for fish below the surface of the ocean. During Cylus, Ember Puffins can be found hibernating in nests on the sides of the volcano, but quickly return to their homes on the coasts once the weather warms up again.
Lifespan and Development: Female Ember Puffins lay a single egg in a cliffside nest or tunnel. Both parents incubate the egg for approximately six ten-trials. Most chicks will learn to fly and leave the nest when they are around a cycle old. The Ember Puffin chicks will not be able to reproduce until they are at least three arcs old. Ember Puffins can live around 20 arcs.
Diet: Adult Ember Puffins mostly eat small fish. Ember Puffin diets vary from colony to colony because of the variety of fish around Faldrass. During Cylus, when they are hibernating, they use their stored fat (built up in Zi'da) to sustain them.
Temperament: Placid tempers with intense curiosity
Abilities: They are excellent swimmers that use their wings to stroke underwater with a flying motion. They steer with rudderlike webbed feet and can dive to depths of 200 feet, though they usually stay underwater for only 20 or 30 seconds.
Weaknesses: Hunted by large avian predators
