Rules and Out of Character Information about Valaris!

A once prosperous, thriving city now sits the ruins of its glory in cold, arctic ice. This is not a place for the living, as the climate of Valaris is deadly, especially during Cylus. However, those who choose to venture into the ruins may find more than just treasures.

Valaris OOC Information
Welcome to Valaris, an almost entirely deserted city in the Northern Region of Idalos! Here, within these crumbling ruins, scores of treasure hunters come brave the sub-zero temperatures in order to search for the glory that is rumoured to await them. The few permanent residents struggle to rebuild the city around their irritating guests. For players new and old alike, here is the place to come for any Out of Character information during your time roleplaying here in Rynmere.

Please, read this thread carefully. This is an incredibly important resource and, as all Prophets will tell you for any city, reading these posts will give you the best insight into the city that you could ask for. Ignorance as an excuse doesn't really fly on this site, especially when you have all the information right at your fingertips, so please read this before beginning your roleplay within the city, and refer to it should you ever have any niggling questions. If there is something you believe is missing, feel free to fling a local Prophet a PM, as we are constantly updating the information available to players!

Piss Off With: Not reading the readily available information and wasting her time with PMs that could be answered with a little effort on your part. And players with a sense of entitlement.

Rules
1. Respect the Staff.
  • All Narrators, Versifiers, Minstrels and Poets are to be respected regardless of whether they are your own local Prophet or not. Every one of them works hard for Standing Trials, so please show them the proper respect for all their hard work. In my experience, this lack of respect often manifests as verbal abuse, and occurs when a player doesn't like what the member of staff has said. I would remind you all that we are volunteers, and we are human, and we have feelings. But most importantly, we are not here to... cramp your style. So don't cramp ours.
2. Respect Each Other.
  • If I have to explain this one to you... then you really shouldn't be here. However I will remind all players that IC actions do not - and should not - reflect OOC feelings. If an issue does arise, please bring it to a Prophet, who will deal with it appropriately.
3. Read the information available.
  • If you want to role-play a character in this setting, we expect you to know WHAT setting you're playing in. If we find you playing out a thread with something that doesn't mesh with the city, we will post an intervention explaining what the problem is and will later delete the thread. If you can't be bothered to read the readily available information (both IC and OOC), then this city - and actually this whole site - isn't for you.
4. Ask Questions.
  • The only stupid question is an unasked one. And what I mean by that is that you'll look like less of a fool if you send us a quick PM and get an answer, rather than have a Prophet have to publicly intervene. You and the Prophets will both be happier people. Use common sense, and come to us for help. It's what we're here for.

Interventions
Every once in a while, a Prophet might find something wrong with your CS or thread. This could be something veering from the lore, or simply something else that needs to be corrected. Whatever it is, the Prophet will point it out in their intervention.

If the intervention is on your Character Sheet, you MUST stop posting at once. Until you sort things out, you cannot continue RPing. Luckily, you can usually sort things out pretty quickly if everyone is willing. Remember that your CS does not actually have to be verified before you begin posting, but it's recommended that you put it up for review, else you will not receive any grades or wages.

If you see an intervention on your CS, read it over and try and fix the changes. Then PM the Prophet with either confirmation that things have been sorted out, or questions if need be. They'll always try to be helpful! When everything is fixed, the intervention will be removed and you'll be able to continue playing.

If the intervention is on a thread, there is a different problem. Though you don't have to stop posting all together, all other threads can be continued, but that thread is officially shut down until the problems are resolved. Again, you can try to sort out the problems then PM the Prophet until the intervention is removed. On another option, if the thread is so purely mangled or messed up that there is no hope of restoration, you can abandon the thread, and effectively pretend it never happened. You will not gain experience or lores from these, though.

Thread interventions can happen while in the middle of a thread, or during grading. If grading, the moderator will usually check over CSs and make sure the content is logical. An intervention can most often simply come if none of the participants have updated Character Sheets. This is frustrating for you and time-consuming for a Prophet, so please try to keep on top of your CS!

Cyclical Income
Over the course of a Cycle, your character works at a job (or not) to earn money. However, you can not simply say they 'work there'. A job and income must be arranged with the Prophet in charge of the city (or through the Narrator Support Forum if there is no Minstrel in your city or Versifier in your Region. Once approved, it is added to your Player Notes thread. At the end of the Cycle, before you update your ledger with your earnings, you must have your wages approved.

To simplify it, this is the process you must go through:

1. Come up with a plausible job

This is usually based on your character's skills or history. Check the Jobs List (link pending) for the wages for each kind of job, and the skills needed. Feel free to PM a Prophet if you're having trouble with this.

2. PM your local Prophet with the information and proposal

Together, you can work out your income, based on the job and your skills, including any skill bonuses if applicable. A Poet cannot approve jobs and Minstrels/Versifiers my only approve those for players in their cities/regions respectively.

3. Write two job threads

Over the course of the Cycle, you need to write two threads where your character works at their job. They can be solos or group threads, but are required to be over 3,000 words long each. The more details you add, the more experience you gain! The two threads for the Cycle work out nicely as one in each Season. They do not have to be timestamped as such: you can write both in the same season if you wish and still earn all the money. If you only write one thread, you are only paid for one season (half wages).

4. Send in your wages request

At the end of the Cycle, the Prophet will usually announce that it's time to send in wages requests. Normally a template will be put up as well, so keep an eye out for that. Fill out the template with your job, wages calculation, and job threads, and reply to that same wages request thread.

5. Add wages and deduct living expenses!

Once your wages have been approved and added to your Player Notes thread, you can add them to your ledger. You will also need to deduct living expenses for the season: you can find more information on that below.
Living Expenses

All characters must live... and to live, they must pay Living Expenses, or have someone else pay them in their stead (i.e. slaves). Living Expenses work TBC:

Here
And Here
Also Here
More Here

Viden is a beautiful city, one which is looked after very well by it's leaders and Immortal, Yvithia. As such, people are not left wanting for water (they are surrounded by ice) or food (well designed farming and trade systems in place). As such, it is the expectation of the local Prophets that all free PCs should be living a relatively pleasant life when in the city, unless there is good reason not to be doing so. This must be noted in the expenditure each season.

If living expenses are not removed from a ledger in your Character Sheets, you will receive no wages or grades. If this continues for a number of Cycles, where you are repeatedly asked to correct the error, you risk having an intervention placed on your CS and any threads you write.
