[Rynmere] Development Thread

Morning All!

So I have done a thing... I hope that it's okay. I just thought it might be a fun focal point for the end of the season and something that could travel around the rest of Idalos in the future, possibly?

If someone is willing to take pity on me, a box code would be pretty awsome...

All the fun of the fair
The Travelling Dragon by Medel and Co.
A travelling fair has arrived in Rynmere. Starting their tour of the island in Andaris they’ve set up their booths on the outskirts of the city to attract Nobility and Common folk alike with a variety of food stalls, exotic goods, an ale tent and entertainment booths. The glorious event opened on the 110th Ashan and will close on the 120th ready to move onto Venora and work their way through all seven duchies. So come one, come all, while the fair is still around!
Anyone entering the fairground must walk under the banner proudly proclaiming:
The Travelling Dragon by Medel and Co.
A green background with letters picked out in gold. The fair is quite obviously contained to a certain area with stalls, tents, arenas for combat and tests of strength and wandering performing artists. Just behind the brightly coloured fabric and lines and set back from where crowds might wander are the accommodations of the fair members, carts, horses under watch by younger members of the caravan but in a temporary pen where they graze.

Dragon Ale:
In the centre of the marked out arena is a larger tent then most, where music seems to permanently drift out of. Inside there are only two choices of drink, ale or cider available from the bar set at the back of the tent. In the centre there is a raised platform where musicians and singers take their turn, vying for popularity before the Medel band takes up the stage to encourage any would-be revellers to join the dance floor.

Amusements and Entertainments:
A contest of sight!: An archery competition. A green and yellow row of bunting flutters over a long bench where quivers and three bows are laid out. Targets are set back near the tree line. Ropes stretch down either side of the range as a primitive prevention against anyone running into the line of shot. An old man whose wispy grey beard could almost reach his belly sits on a stool, suspiciously eyeing any who approach.
3cn for four shots
Using only the bows and arrows provided by the stall, the competitor must sink three arrows into a target three horse lengths away in order to claim a prize. Some might say that the size of the horse used to measure might change every day. Some might say that the arrows have slices cut out of them and missing fletches. Others might argue that the bow is no more than a stick with a string tied to each end – but they would be wrong! Baelin Medel might look like someone’s grandfather, and he probably is, but he won’t take any arguing about the equipment provided. He’ll merely remind you that you pay to play by his rules and the rules stipulate the use of the equipment provided. He’ll also remind you that he’ll take no responsibility if you’re injured when taking part, or if you manage to maim any passers-by.

To win a prize, roll a 1/10. Only rolls of an 8 will win you anything and mean that the target was struck. The target is the small cut out shape of a duck painted yellow. The prize is either a carved wooden ring, a small glass jar containing fireflies, one of several peg dolls or a miniature wooden sword.

Dagger throw: There is a certain family resemblance between Remelda and her father Baelin. Red banners adorn this stall where slow moving targets dance back and forth. Three ships bobbing over blues waves. You must stand with your feet behind the line and only use the equipment provided, or risk Remelda’s wrath. For a woman barely over 5” feet tall, she has a stare that could curdle milk.

3cn for four shots

The daggers may be weighted to either side and have a tendency to spin off at innocent passers by, and not necessarily fly where you think they’re going to. However to win a prize roll a 1d6. Only rolls of a 3 or 5 will win a prize. The prize is either a small glass jar containing fireflies, a miniature wooden sword or a carved dragon.

Entertainers
Magicians, jugglers, fire-eaters wander in all their fancy finery trying to attract attention.
M’Lady Vesen holds court in a purple tent towards the outskirts of the arena, promising to read your fortune from the dregs of your ale cup for the mere cost of 5sn.

Food vendors
Although a large range of food and drink are available at standard prices, sometimes there are things that just taste better at the fair. It might be the fresh air, it might be a secret ingredient – who knows?

The smell of cinnamon and apple is strong, hot apple fritters are available at 1cn per one. An apple fritter is a slice of baked apple in a cinnamon and sugar infused batter. Strips of roasted meat wrapped in a thin slice of bread will set you back 1sn.

Marchpane fantasies (marzipan), attract those with a sweet tooth and are moulded into a variety of tiny farm animals. This arc, miniature pigs seem particularly popular with the younger crowd. They’re also a steal at 3cn each.

Night time
Dusk is an unusually quiet break as a hush settles over the fair. There is a pause in the music for this time, building anticipation for the band to rally and the dancing to begin. Typically the band will play until the early hours of the morning, the stalls and amusements will continue outside until finally the last stragglers are left to sleep in the grassy spaces between the stalls or firmly encouraged to head back to the city, depending on their ability to walk at this point. It’s unusual to return from the fair with any coin left in your pockets…be careful what you take with you.

[Rynmere] Development Thread

I wasn’t sure about the costs of the prostitutes. I thought that each prostitute would take at least two clients a night though. A prostitute with competent seduction makes 2 gn/trial, one prostitute would thus cost 1 gn. If you think they should be cheaper, let me know. For the drinks I just copied the price lists of the two taverns in Andaris.
House of Roses
Image
The name of Andaris‘ biggest brothel – the House of Roses, named after the beautiful women (and occasionally men) that worked there – was known to men from all social circles as well as quite a few women, even though they didn’t dare to admit such a thing as long as the sun was still visible in the sky, out of fear that their precious reputation would be tarnished. It was located a few blocks from the Bath House which was very convenient since both establishments catered to similar needs and gave their clients the opportunity to relax and just let go.

The House of Roses was a two story building made of grey stone and rather inconspicuous from the outside. Curtains covered the windows so that it was impossible to just take a peek when you were standing in front of the building, and the sign above the thick wooden door just showed the picture of a red rose. If you stepped through the door that was framed by long, crimson silk drapes though, you would find yourself in a whole different world.

During the trial few people visited the House of Roses, but as soon as the sun disappeared behind the horizon it was full of life. The smell of perfume and alcohol and more intimate things was heavy in the air, there were laughter and conversations and even music, sometimes.

On the ground floor a bar could be found. The drinks that were served there were quite good, even though most people didn’t come there for the drinks or at least not just for the drinks. Next to the bar was a stage where a few of the Roses would usually dance seductively, often to the sound of music and surrounded by men and women that wanted to get rid of their money.

Tables that were surrounded by very comfortable looking arm chairs could be found throughout the ground floor, some of them located in niches near the wall to allow people a little more privacy. There the prostitutes would often sit with their clients. The floor was covered with soft carpets, and pictures of half naked men and women decorated the walls. The whole room was lit by numerous candelabras and luxurious chandeliers that hung from the ceiling, giving the establishment a somewhat mysterious and decadent atmosphere.

Next to the bar a staircase led to the first floor where the rooms in which the prostitutes met their clients and often also lived could be found. Each room contained a large bed, a table, two chairs, a dresser, a small hearth as well as a washing basin, handkerchiefs and a mirror as prostitutes as well as clients usually wanted to clean themselves afterwards.

Every once in a while one of the guards would check the first floor to make sure that everything was in order and that the clients didn’t hurt the prostitutes, although different people often had different views as to what exactly that entailed.

Job: Brothel Owner
Skills: Seduction 66, Persuasion 50, Negotiation 34, Socialization 40, Leadership 35

Nobody really knows a lot about Madame Alessa. Some say that the owner of the House of Roses is an escaped slave from Athart, others claim that she is really an Yludih, and yet others insist that she is the bastard daughter of a rich merchant or even a lord and her business is thriving because her father secretly supports her. What is known though is that the raven haired Alessa is a shrewd businesswoman and takes good care of her workers. She has been managing the brothel for about 10 arcs now, since the old owner, a Biqaj male, died. In the beginning she quite often took clients of her own, but these trials she only serves the most important ones.

Title: Master Merchant
Skills: 40 Jewel-crafting, 5 Archery, 10 Gambling, 30 Business Management, 15 Negotiation
Other Information: Mercer started out a simple craftsman, making trinket for those who could afford them. As his talent grew and he began to make more nels per season, his wares became desired across Rynmere by those who played the status games.

Originally simply sending his wares on whatever other merchants ships were leaving first or leaving pick-up up to the buyer, Mercer eventually saw that a profit could be made in using his slowly amassing fortune to buy goods that were common or cheaper where he was and sending an entire shipment of his own to be sold at the destination, and in this way he branched out from being just a jeweller to being a merchant, eventually rising to Master Merchant more because he went drinking and pheasant hunting with the right people than because he was the best, though he was by and large successful.

The attack and sinking of a ship he was on Ashan 7, Arc 716 has left him deathly afraid of ocean voyages, and he will now only travel overland, and with very little prompting is liable to get wild eyed and go on at lengths about the Demon-Mer who attacked his ship, especially after a drink.

Swan Lake Theatre
Image

The Swan Lake Theatre is one of the oldest buildings belonging to Andaris' city. The simple yet elegant Theatre has put on some of the best plays, written by only the most intelligent playwrights of Rynmere history. Tragedy and comedy are the most common theatrical styles since they seem to draw more of a crowd in. But occasionally, the theatre will put on a drama. Most of Swan Lake's plays are based off catastrophic events Rynmere faced as a community or some of the playwright's own life experiences ( this is usually where most of the comedy originate from).

The theatre is located on the "nicer" side of the city and cannot be missed. Standing two-stories high, the building looks magical during both day and night. It is made of marble the color of the sun and iron. There is just about windows all about the theatre, some covered with curtains of velvet. The building is almost dome-shaped with stairs leading to the main entrance of the theatre. You will notice the main entrance is heavily guarded and that is only because of the nobles who frequently visit.

The inside it nicely decorated, you will notice that almost everything from the halls to the chandeliers are gold. Paintings of the greatest playwrights and actors hang in the halls and will not vanish until you reach the actual theatre.

The theatre is not oblivious to the social classes; therefore, surrounding the stage are balconies which are for the nobles or wealthier people. Beneath the balconies are comfortable chairs for those who can afford a seat but those who cannot afford a chair are obligated to stand and watch the play from the back (i.e, the lower class). Also in the back are tiny wooden benches which are very uncomfortable and there is sort of a first come first served rule for those seats.

Swan Lake Theatre is run by the head playwright/actress, Lady Jane Andaris. Swan Lake Theatre has belonged to House Andaris for years and they'd like to keep it that way. Anyway, thanks to Lady Jane, the theatre is very popular and every play that takes place in Swan Lake almost seems too realistic.

Age: 72 Arcs
Born: Andaris, Zi'da 61, 644 Arc
Title: Merchant
Skills: Fishing 30, Business Management 20, Persuasion 30, Appraisal 20
Other Information: Ferlin started his life as a fisherman. The son of a fisherman it was the only life he knew and all he expected to do. Until a broken rope on a stormy day ended with him losing his legs from just above the knee. His livelihood lost, Ferlin sold his own fishing equipment for a decent price. He used some of this money to buy damaged nets which he then repaired and resold. This expanded to buying and reselling others fishing gear, and paying children to get bait for him. Eventually, anything you might want, new or used that could be used for fishing shy of an actual boat could be found at his stall within the marketplace of Andaris.

When home or at his stall, Ferlin sits in a chair of average height. He also has a low wheeled cart that lets him move himself through the city with relative freedom. Though not rich by any means, he's done well enough to provide for himself and his wife Elsie, and keep their small home near the marketplace.

He is a friendly man, who always has words if someone wants to discuss fishing or sailing in general. He can occasionally be a bit soft on those he perceives as being in need.
