Elyari's Hope

Elyari's Hope is something of an experience more than just one of many places to eat in Andaris. Located in Midtown, this restaurant has humble beginnings. It was started by Elyari, and her husband, Carlisle in the hopes of allowing Elyari to live out her dream.

The restaurant caters to both fine dining (the interior seating), and casual fare (the outdoor seating), so it has something for everyone. But its true specialty is the many varied herbal drinks the restaurant has to offer. The food is excellent, and the menu changes frequently, as Elyari's inspiration changes. Elyari's Hope does however offer a few permanent dishes that are chosen based on the interest of the restaurant's most loyal customers.

Elyari's Hope offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Elyari hasn't had an easy life. But the saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is a core aspect of her life. She has struggled through the bad times in her life, making the best of what she had. And it has paid off. Now she has a restaurant of her own, and the means to pursue her dream of being the best chef she can be.

Tied closely to her love of cooking, Elyari has a fascination with herbs, and the idea that medicinal herbs can be used to create food that will make people feel better. So she has studied a great deal about herbs, and what they can do. She uses this knowledge in her cooking, and in making a line of herbal drinks that Elyari's Hope is well known for.

In the pursuit of her dreams, she did get a few breaks, the biggest one being a mentor who believed in her, and was willing to take her under her wing. For that reason, Elyari believes in giving back the kindness she was shown when she needed it the most. To do this, she takes on 3-5 apprentices at a time, teaching them everything she knows until they are confident enough to pursue their own dreams. In doing this, she gets the benefit of helpers, who are paid a fair wage. In return, they get the benefit of her knowledge, and the chance to practice their skills in a real restaurant where they can also learn time management, multitasking, and other skills that are crucial to a chef.

Carlisle

Carlisle is both Elyari's husband, and the co owner of Elyari's Hope. He runs the business side of things, and he has a sharp eye for a good deal when it comes to getting something the restaurant needs. When not managing the books, he can be found behind the bar mixing drinks for the customers. He is a great listener, and he always has a story to share.

Aris

Aris has a natural talent for art. But while it comes easily to her, and she enjoys it as a hobby, her true passion is cooking. She has been Elyari's apprentice for 4 arcs now. He cooking skills are coming along well, and she has learned to put her artistic talents to good use in the beautiful way she presents her dishes. But she is a menace when it comes to baking, and has started more than one kitchen fire in her attempts to master the skill.

Aris is a friendly, outgoing girl with a ready charm that makes it hard not to like her. But while she may seem carefree, she goes after her dreams with an intense determination that may shock those who don't see beyond the friendly exterior. In the pursuit of her dreams, she can be ruthless, but she never misses an opportunity to offer help to her fellow apprentices. She wants to succeed, but not at the expense of those she cares about.

Aris is fiercely protective of her friends. And there isn't anything she wouldn't do for Elyari, and Carlisle, who she sees as adopted parents as well as mentors. But she has something of an impish nature, and this shows in her rivalry with Andiron. She insists on calling him Andi, and teasing him about his offended dignity when he gets upset about it. But if he ever needed her, all thoughts of rivalry would fall away and she would support him in any way she could.

Aris has the tendency to adopt any apprentice who comes after her as a "little" sister or brother. She also helps out by making the baskets that the bread is served in, and the candles for the tables in the fine dining section.

Andiron

Andiron grew up on a vineyard in Venora. As a result, he knows a great deal about wines; the making of them, growing the grapes the wines are made from, and determining the quality of wine. But his older brother was to inherit the family vineyard, and didn't want Andiron around showing him up. So when their parents died, Andiron found himself kicked out of his family, and on his own.

He found his way to Andaris, and was taken on as one of Elyari's apprentices three arcs ago. When he started, cooking wasn't his true passion. Working at Elyari's Hope was a means for him to save up the money he needs for what he really wanted; a vineyard of his own. But since then, he has discovered a love of cooking, and he is now questioning what he really wants out of life.

Andiron is a perfectionist. He is stiff and cool around others unless they can give him something he wants. He feels hugely superior to the other apprentices, but is quick to acknowledge Elyari's skills are far superior to his own.

Andiron is incredibly dignified, and he can't take a joke. As a result, he is always clashing with Aris. He hates being called Andi because he feels it is demeaning, and undignified.

Senryo

Race: Human

Senryo is a charmer, but it is all in harmless fun. He will never flirt with a girl unless he feels that she will welcome it. He is friendly, and outgoing. And when the situation needs a bit of lightening up, he has a ready joke, or a playful prank to cheer things up.

Senryo is very protective of the people he cares about. He is the "big brother" of most of his coworkers, and he treats Elyari and her husband like a second set of parents. When with a customer, he is friendly, or formal as the situation calls for. Senryo is very observant, and is a good judge of character. It is rare that he misjudges the situation, and acts in a way that will upset anyone.

He is good at what he does, and is very happy doing it. In a pinch, he can help out in the kitchen, but it is definitely not where his talents, or interests lay. He is, however, interested in languages, and enjoys studying them in his spare time. This benefits Elyari's Hope greatly because when a foreigner comes for a visit, there is a good chance that he can understand enough of what they are saying to help them.

Senryo is fluent in Common, Haltunga, Nysin, Rakahi, and Xanthea. He is conversational in Ith'ession, Leni, Lorien, and Vorkelien.

Taru

Taru is a man of the sea. He was born on his family's ship, and would have been content to live out his life on it. But a severe storm left him with an injury that made life on a ship impossible. Feeling very much at a loss with what to do with himself, he happened to eat at Elyari's Hope on a trial that they desperately needed help. He was short on nels at the time, so he offered to help in exchange for waiving his bill. They took him up on his offer, and when the trial was over, they offered him a job on the spot. Since he had few other options, he was happy to take the offer.

Taru likes working at Elyari's Hope well enough, but he longs for the sea. As a result, he can be moody at times, falling into a sullen depression that can last for several trials. But he is trying to make the best of it, and when not sullen and moody, Taru is friendly and outgoing.

He loves to fish because it is a tie to what he has lost. And his skill at it makes him a valuable resource for Elyari and Carlisle. When not working at the restaurant, he can be found fishing. His efforts provide a lot of the more common fish that the restaurant serves.

Serani

Serani, or Sera as her friends call her is obsessed with music. She loves listening to it, playing it, and singing. And if you ever get her talking about music, she will happily talk forever about her favorite subject.

She and her sister, Lissa were hired on permanently as entertainment for the customers. Most of the time, they perform for the customers in the fine dining section. But those in the casual fare section can hear them as well. And they will put on special events as needed.

Lissa

If Serani is obsessed with music, Lissa is a thousand times more so. The only thing aside from music that means anything to Lissa is her sister...and it is often hard to figure out which she loves more. Lissa can often come across as cold and indifferent to anyone who doesn't know her because of this.

Serin

Serin is quiet, and almost painfully shy. She is definitely more at home with her herbs and plants than with most people. But if someone is patient enough to give her the time to open up to them, they will find a smart, caring, loyal friend.

Most of the customers will never see Serin. But they will feel her presence. She is the one who tends the plants that give Elyari's Hope its atmosphere. She also grows/forages for all of the herbs used by the restaurant. And she grows some of the fruit and vegetables used by the restaurant on a small farm located just outside the city that Elyari owns.

Serin has two younger siblings that she is raising herself since her parents died several arcs ago.

Toby

Age: 10 arcs

Toby is a common sight around Elyari's Hope. When his older sister is working there, he is there as well. Most of the time he tries to make himself useful while he's there. He may be seen trying to help in the kitchen, or helping his sister weed the garden. Or he might be out fishing with Taru. Toby has a good head on his shoulders, and he does his best to help his older sister.

But he also has an impish side, and if he gets too bored, he is likely to go off exploring on his own, or trying to think up a clever prank to pull.

Kasira

Like her older brother, Kasira is a common sight around Elyari's Hope when her older sister is working there. She tends to be more serious about helping out that Toby is, and she has a genuine interest in learning how to cook, and play an instrument. But like any child, she is prone to distraction, and wanting to do what she wants to do rather than what she should be doing. She also loves to read.

Kasira is very creative. When not helping out, she can be found spending breaks trying to create the next "masterpiece." She loves beautiful things, and is fascinated by the idea of producing something beautiful herself.

Burhan Embassy

Located in The Crown, the Burhan Embassy provides a base of operations for the noble House when its members are in the city. Considered the main city residence of the Duke and Duchess, as well as an optional residence for any Baron or Baroness, particularly if they're in Andaris as the House Representative. The building is also representative of what the noble family has to offer as a good portion of it is faced with Burhan timber and nautical-themed carvings on the doors and staircase, a theme that continues throughout the embassy.

Given that space is a luxury in Andaris, the embassy is cleverly designed not only to provide the Burhans with a sizeable location but also to create the illusion of a larger one. What's considered the ground floor of the embassy has been raised a metre and half off the ground, allowing for a partially subterranean level to exist beneath it, which is known as the Basement. The so-called Ground Level is reached by a handsome wooden staircase, with that portion of the building jutting out two metres from the rest. The entrance staircase is bordered by small bushes and flowers, providing the embassy with a bit of greenery in the absence of a garden. Above the carved, wooden double doors is a large window on the building's upper floor, which would afford an excellent view of the goings-on within if it wasn't for the net curtains hung to maintain privacy.

Ground Floor
Upon ascending the staircase and gaining admittance, a visitor would find themselves in a large L-shaped hall and most likely be greeted by a knight who stands guard in the initial entrance space to ensure that no one undesirable enters. From there, the space opens up on the right, offering a comfortable space with tables, couches and chaise longue where casual meetings and smaller, more intimate social occasions can be conducted. In the west wall lies the door to the Audience Chamber where official meetings take place between a visitor and whichever House Representative is present. In the hall's north-west corner, just past the Audience Chamber door, is a spiral staircase to the floor above.

Few visitors would gain access to the upper level but many would have had reason to pass through the northern double doors into the large function room beyond, a space intended to be a ballroom, something that the vertically-laid floorboards accommodate quite well. It can also be made into a banquet space. A door in the western wall leads to a refreshment room where visiting nobles can find additional food and drinks during events, or make use of one of the two washrooms towards the south. This room also provides access to the Kitchen below by means of a spiral staircase.

The final feature of the ground floor is a large balcony accessed through a set of double doors in the northern wall of the ballroom. The balcony is actually a patioed area complete with a large wooden gazebo, a bench and an array of plants to provide a small, intimate garden space.

Ground Floor

Upper Floor
The Upper Floor of the Burhan Embassy is reached via the spiral staircase located in the Reception Hall and opens into a hallway in the central part of the building. A doorway to the south leads to a private sitting room, which has a small library, comfortable couches and a window seat; it's this room that has the large window that overlooks the front of the building. The eastern doorway leading off the hallway leads to the smaller of the guestrooms while the doorway to the north leads to the larger one.

Most of the Upper Floor is taken up by the suite of rooms on the west side of the floor meant for the Burhan Representative. The door from the hallway leads into a large Master Bedroom, which includes a sizeable washroom to the north and a spacious walk-in wardrobe entered through a door to the north-east of the room.

Upper Floor

Basement
The Basement is an important part of the building and is the domain of all those who serve their betters in the embassy. Most of this level is taken up with the Kitchen, which has access to the Ground Floor via a spiral staircase in the north-west corner and a servant's entrance to the north, which exits at a point beside the raised patio that's accessed from the ballroom upstairs.

To the south of the Kitchen is the Cold Room where various perishables are stored and the Pantry for longer lasting foodstuff. To the east of this floor is the area for servants, which includes a common room where they can have a small break from their superiors and their own quarters to the south-east.

Basement

Nathan Duvan

Race: Mixed Race (Human x Biqaj)
Age: 55 arcs

Nathan is in charge of the political side of the embassy, arranging the schedule of meetings and private audiences when the House Representative is in the city. He often works alongside Leda when organising events in the embassy as they have serious political implications but also require someone with a knack for organising more domestic matters.

As the administrative face of the embassy, it's important that he understands a great deal about his guests' political positions and presents the face of a perfect gentleman. However, despite his respectable appearance, the man acts as a spy for the Burhans, collecting what information he can by careful questioning and listening at keyholes. For those who know him well, they know that he has a fondness for strapping young men that he can bend to his will, allowing for a potential form of bribery although such knowledge is difficult to come by. At most, an unsuspecting guest might notice an admiring gaze directed towards certain men but it's unlikely they can guess at the darker nature that he hides.

Leda Qau'Gwar

Leda manages the domestic affairs of the embassy, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Without her, the place would fall apart, even during the various parties and political events that Nathan organises. She knows her staff very well, their strengths and failings, and thus, her knowledge of them is indispensable. Despite living in Rynmere's capital, Leda has little interest in the political manoeuvrings of its occupants, although she knows enough about them to prevent any upsets when various guests put in an appearance. However, she isn't particularly interested in collecting information about those around her.

The woman isn't one to gossip although she certainly knows a great deal about what goes on in building. However, her loyalty is strong and thus, her lips seem resolutely sealed.

Jovy Dj'Ihadi

Race: Biqaj
Age: 43 arcs
Title: Head Cook

Not many visitors to the embassy have occasion to meet Jovy, who's ordinarily to be found in the basement, ensuring that the various culinary needs of the place are met on a daily basis as well as on special occasions. She is in charge of a variety of staff from cooks to kitchen boys and servers, and while she may sometimes have a sharp tongue, she's well liked by her colleagues as a whole.

Jovy is truly passionate about cooking, something that's plainly obvious when she's preparing a feast for various Burhan guests. She's clearly in her element, organising her underlings and various cooking operations with the precision of a conductor directing an orchestra. There doesn't seem to be anything that she can't do, excelling in all manner of cooking as well as baking, earning her an excellent reputation within the city.

Umbridge

Drawback: Small. Isolated. Frigid. Mountainous. Unpopulated. Feral. Lack of sufficient agriculture.

Umbridge is the northernmost Barony of Gawyne, nestled tightly in the shadow of Warren's Peak. Rumor has it that an entrance to the Labyrinth underneath Rynmere, the Labyrinth that Warren Gawyne disappeared into arcs ago, is somewhere in the caves under and behind the estate, Warren's End. The landscape is breathtaking and wild, perhaps some of the most untamed in all of Gawyne. The hardiest of folk live here. Warren's End estate is home to one of the most exquisite libraries of all of Gawyne, meticulous records of the history of Rynmere and other secrets are kept here in its cold stone halls. Being at the foot of Warren's Peak means that Umbridge is a very cold Barony: the hot cycle is fleeting and the cold cycle is frigid and harsh. Very little grows here, but what does has a short season and the inhabitants are forced to be hardy folk, importing much of their food from elsewhere in Rynmere. Umbridge is a feral place, full of natural dangers from the landscape as well as the wildlife, if not the weather itself. It's isolated for much of the cold cycle—impossible to visit except for the most skilled of travelers in Zi'da and Cylus until the great thaw in Ashan.

Umbridge is a large Barony of mostly uninhabited, harsh land: swaths of rocky landscape with rolling hills and thin forests of thick evergreens. Clearly untamed, the villages and towns that dot the landscape are full of warm-hearted, strong people who know how to keep their hearths stoked with flame and can hold their own in a fight against both the frigid weather and the hungry wildlife. The Barony is known for its pines and cedars, its quarries of various building stones, and its warriors: what little forces Gawyne contributes to the Rynmere military largely hail from Umbridge. Carpenters, stonemasons, and builders from Umbridge are priced throughout Gawyne and Rynmere for their skill and knowledge, and just as miners from Endor are a welcome workforce, Umbridge-born craftsman are a welcome addition to any mining team.

The population of Umbridge is very low compared to the rest of Gawyne, which is already a sparse Dutchy, but those who live there love the land, endure the winter with warm stories and loud song, and tend to learn how to use a weapon early in life. Homes are made of stone and wood with thatched roofs, often built into the ground for warmth, and farms are scraggly, tough collections of the hardiest vegetables. While wild game is a huge part of the diet of Umbridge people, cattle and sheep, a few tough goats, and other animals are also kept. Horses are shaggy and strong, like their masters, and almost every home has a dog or two for hunting.

The cold cycle is long here—roughly two thirds of the arc is cold and snowy, with a short, gorgeous hot cycle that begins with the Thawing in mid-Ashan. The hearth and fire are a central part of Umbridge (and Gawyne) culture, perhaps because staying warm is a life or death situation in Zi'da and Cylus. Umbridge people are just as warm as their hearths, looking out for each other and toiling alongside each other in their painfully short growing season. Travel is nearly impossible from the end of Vhalar until the Thawing, and though the most experienced of travelers can make it in and out of the Barony, coaches and mounts cannot. Vhalar is icy, but still traversable, with Ymiden and Saun being the golden time of travel, trade, and activity in all of the Barony.

The largest village is nestled up against the Barony Estate of Warren's End, and generally shares the name. Warren's End is built into a cliffside, half the estate literally inside the mountain itself, one of the many foothill-sized rocky outcroppings that are under the shadow of Warren's Peak. Warren's End is a quiet, restful place, known for it's library, education, historians, scribes, and bookbinders. It's known for it's foolish explorers, too, curious folk from all over Rynmere who come to try to find the secrets underneath the island, for rumors abound that the entrance to the Labyrinth that Warren Gawyne himself entered is somewhere in the mountain the Estate is built into. No one's telling, that's for sure.

Umbridge-Specific Holidays

Cylus 15 - The Vigil: Cylus is the coldest, bitterest, deadliest season in Umbridge. It's dark, snowy, and the temperatures are literally fatal in the mountains. Mid-Cylus is a time of quiet contemplation for all Umbridge locals. Some even go outside to do so—though it depends on the weather. Prayers, songs, and candlelight meditations are an important aspect of this somewhat understated holiday, a day focused on hope for the sun's rising in just a few more trials.

Ashan 62 - The Thawing: By mid-Ashan, the snows are beginning to melt and the great thaw begins. Rivers swell and northern Gawyne people get outside to begin preparing for their short growing season. The Thawing is a time of celebration across all of Umbridge, and local people break out the best of their preserved foods and best crafted beers for a Barony-wide party with bonfires and outdoor meals.

Ymiden 27 - Trial of Vows: Ymiden is a popular season for marriage in Umbridge, given that it's warm and the landscape is verdant green. The Trial of Vows is a particularly popular holiday for weddings, and often there are several at a time in any given town or village, creating a huge celebration of life and love for trials at a time.

Saun 40 - The Hearthlighting: When the suns set on the last day of Saun, Umbridge residents know that the cold cycle will come crashing on them. All across the Barony, candles and hearths are lit brightly, burning long past sunset as locals stock their pantries and make their last preparations for the coming snow that hits hard usually within the first few days of Vhalar. This is a time of giving: neighbors exchange practical gifts of preserved foods, woven blankets, warm coats, firewood, or other winter-boosting supplies.

Vhalar - First Snow: By the first quarter of Vhalar, travel is no longer possible outside of Umbridge. While there is no official day or title for this event, across all of Umbridge, the first snowfall is celebrated with a wild-game heavy feast, drinking, and tale-telling. The stories of First Snow are usually genealogical in nature, families telling of their history and celebrating their generations of survival in the harsh landscape of northern Gawyne.

Vhalar 31 - Last Harvest: Once the snows come, little grows in Umbridge. The Last Harvest is celebrated with the baking and giving of bread and other pastries, exchanged between neighbors and friends. These are the last gifts of the harvest and a given with the hope and prayer for a well-fed winter and a good harvest in the next arc.

Zi'da 93 - Last Light: By the end of Zi'da, it is more dark than light across northern Gawyne, the shadows of the mountains long and the sun retreating. On the last day, before the darkness of Cylus, Umbridge Gawyne light torches and candles and lanterns and watch the sun set, often with songs and prayers for peace and warmth during the coldest season of the arc. Gifts are sometimes given between lovers and the betrothed—promises made for when the warmth returns after the Rebirth Cycle.

Warren's End

Literally carved into a cliffside in the mountains from which grow Warren's Peak, the Estate of Warren's End is an impressive structure. Isolated, well-protected, and carefully constructed, the Estate is both a fortress and a residence, a place of refuge during the worst of the winter and a place of learning. Great halls and roaring hearths are an important part of Gawyne life, and Warren's End is no exception. Half of the Estate is literally inside the mountain, with the exterior half made of well-carved, carefully crafted pale stonework as a contrast to the dark cliffside. A small garden surrounds the rocky wall, and green grass grows in the painfully short hot cycle of mid-Ymiden to Saun.

Fortifications are present and the Hearth Guard of Gawyne are in a healthy presence, their barracks and main training ground in the village that spreads out sparsely beyond the walls of the Estate.

Warren's End is well-known for its library, the most exquisite in all of Gawyne (and rumored to rival both libraries combined in Andaris proper), Baron Frederick Gawyne a meticulous record-keeper himself and the Estate a place of learning and education for many Gawyne residents who wish to pursue knowledge. It is also known as a place of peace—any who seek refuge within Warren's End will find it at Frederick and Jade's hearth. The Estate is sparsely decorated, mostly with trophies of great hunts, beautiful tapestries woven by womenfolk to tell the Gawyne history, and a few paintings of family and of the harsh but beautiful landscape of Umbridge itself.

Elias Nolein

Elias is a perfect hardy example of an Umbridge local. He's a mountain of a man and even at 54, is still going strong as Captain of the Umbridge Hearth Guard, personal protectors of the Barony, the Baron's family, and the estate. In addition to heading the barracks stationed in Warren's End, Elias enjoys teaching his skills and was the combat tutor to the Gawyne children.

Appearance: A liquid narcotic, this lemon yellow fluid is sold in a thumb sized vial for a relatively small price. It’s exact chemical composition is not clear, but there are at least trace amounts of datura and marygold in it. Opiate in nature, the drug is taken orally (one vial is one dose).

Toxicity & Hazards: Users experience a sense of clarity if taken correctly, and on its own. It makes the user feel like they are floating and gives a nice buzz that usually ends in a peaceful sleep. If however it’s taken in too large a dose or mixed with other medications, Sunshine can cause severe ice pick headaches and seizures. This is believed to be caused by micro clots in the brain. There is a moderate risk of permanent brain injury or even death.

Drawback: The cost of living is quite high, making it difficult for poorer patrons to get a permanent foothold in the city. The city’s prosperity has also recently drawn the interest of pirates and malicious Mer.

Azmarine, unlike the other cities in Venora, runs at a much slower pace than that of its surrounding areas. It is considered a hub of culture and artistic endeavors and the majority see this place as the center of luxury and paradise. With white stone structures overlooking the soothing coast, this city boasts of low crime rates and easy going citizens. With the second largest population of Biqaj, the ports are filled with a variety of cultures and competitions, the most notable being that of excellent ship making.

Citizens of Azmarine take great pride in the appearance of their city, and the streets are some of the cleanest in all of Rynmere. Given the proximity to water sources, sewers and pipes have been constructed to allow running water, and the design of unique architecture gives natural ventilation in both homes and businesses alike. Heavy winds can prove somewhat problematic without proper precautions as papers and flimsy items have been easily known to blow away unless doors and windows are secured tightly.

Natives, however, know the proper steps to take, and thunderstorms in this region are particularly breathtaking to behold. In fact, the beauty of this city has been heralded as a must see and as a result, tourists flock to the location, primarily newlyweds who wish to spend their first days together with their spouse surrounded by clear waters and lush vineyards. Further inland, farms, and orchards sweep the land, offering a nice retirement for older citizens or those looking to start their life in this region whereas the main streets prove to be too pricey.

Those interested in the arts are encouraged to apprentice in the city, as a vibrant artistic community thrives. Popular plays, concerts, and gallery showings are continually put on and are perhaps the most affordable thing about this location.

Solavora Estate

Previously a sprawling castle further inland and on the edge of the barony's border, newly appointed Baron Andráska Venora has moved his own residence to the hub of the city, preferring a seaside structure that allows for him to be among the people. While large and open as a whole, a number of city officials also share the same space, claiming different wings of the building in their working hours, only accessible by individuals with proper clearance. This allows for quick meetings and few delays, allowing the immediate addressing of complaints, much to the satisfaction of any disgruntled citizens who may find themselves seeking counsel from the baron himself. While many common folks have praised the young Baron's idealistic vision of the future and brave desire to relate to those he oversees, it has also been susceptible to harsh criticism as well, as the assassination attempts and anti-noble sentiments could put him in danger. Many expect that he will relocate to the estate's original location once he is married and wishes to start a family.

Other Information: Amyriah was born in Uthaldria to human parents. She was raised as a warrior to help defend the cities. She learned how to make weaponry and tools, but had a penchant for making shields. When she became impregnated by Jholengrier, the pair decided to go to Rynmere, where Amyriah had some family, to settle down for a more peaceful life. She now works in a shield shop in Drakensmit, in Drakengard. She's one of several smiths in the shop, not the best, not the worst. She's mother to Torqin, who lives with his father near to the Aestedia Estate.

Stables of Astedia

The Astedia Stables are one of the original structures of Barony, one of the oldest. These particular stables are home to the mounts kept by the Andaris family, as well as the working horses for the guards that protect the Barony. Important visitors would also keep their mounts here. These stables are not as large as those kept by the Warricks and Clydes, nor do they have as extensive of a breeding lineage. Most of their horses are imported, with only a few actually bred here.

The stables are made up of three buildings. The largest and most prominent, known as Alabaster Glens, is reserved for the steeds owned exclusively by nobles, and also houses visiting nobles' mounts. The structure is made up of solid, white stone, with dark wood trim. It is kept especially pristine and well kept. There's enough room in the Glens to house about fifty steeds, and is rarely more than half full.

The back building is known as Wisteria Hollow is where the horses kept for the guards live, as well as any steeds the Stables own. The Hollow keeps a more organic, comfortable look, grey stone, water features, and plants abound. It is kept further back and out of sight of the Glens, as it isn't designed to be as impressive to visitors. For the staff though, it tends to be the favorite. It can hold just as many steeds as the Glens, but is a smaller structure, so as to not take away from the main building.

Finally, there's the Barn. The Barn is where all the food stores and spare gear are kept. A massive stone structure, with two silos, and a variety of pulley systems for carrying supplies to the second story. Staff are the only ones allowed in here, or nobles with permission of the Stable Master.

The entire enclosure is surrounded by a chest high wall of the same prominent white stone so commonly found in Astedia structures. It separates the stables from the nearby farms, while still giving more than enough room for the horses to ride, run, graze, and be comfortable.

Currently the stables do not operate as a means of selling horses, as they cannot produce enough of a supply. The stables earns its money through the rentals of stalls and services to horses, mainly from visiting nobles and people of import.

Tivania Hart

Tivania Hart is the Stable Master for the Astedia Stables and earned her way up to that rank, having started her way up from the age of six as a stable hand. She has a natural gift with horses, having been able to calm even the wildest stallions from a young age. When her predecessor decided to retire, he appoint Tivania to Stable Master at the young age of 18. Many thought it to be scandalous, that she'd slept her way to the top. But the woman's skill was unparalleled.

Her temper and impatience toward stupidity is also well known. She is one of the few that don't back down from nobles, when they are in her realm. In the stables, she is the law. She will ban anyone that is being harmful or doing something dangerous with the steeds in her care, and will extend that ban to anyone that associates with that individual after the fact. And surprisingly, nobles, guardsmen, and visitors alike tend to respect her iron will. She is invaluable to the stables. She's never issued a lifetime ban, but has accepted public apologies, along with a hefty "donation" to the stables.

Tivania is looking to expand her stables into the farm lands nearby, and begin breeding Andaris specific lineages. She is willing to take in all manner of help, and has a knack for pairing up people to the right horses. She freely takes in stablehands, children and adults, but does expect hardwork from them all.

Toddy

Toddy is a young lad, the son of a maid and butler at Astedia Estate. Once he was old enough to walk around on his own, he made his way to the stables and refuses to leave. So Tivania handed him a broom and a brush and put the boy to work, and he took to it like fire to a prairie. He's always there at sunrise, and leaves at sunset. Even when Tivania tells him to take the day off, he stays close to the stables to play, to watch the horses, to learn. And every time it storms, even in the middle of the night, Toddy can be found at the stables, cleaning and comforting the horses, a smile on his face and a whistle on his lips.

Services

The Astedia Stables does not have an inventory of horses of its own to sell. The only way to acquire a horse through them is to be a noble, and ask Tivania nicely. She keeps in contact with the other stables upon the island, and will often send a groomer to fetch a horse that matches what is asked for. But this comes with a 10% markup as a finder's fee on the cost of the mount.

Rynmere University Sports Clubs

Rynmere University Sports Clubs

Even though Rynmere University prides itself on academia and the expanding of the kingdom's minds through education, the need for both physical exercise and defensive training is well-recognized. Idalos is a dangerous place and anyone who wishes to protect themselves against what threats lay outside the relative safety of city walls best have a place to learn.

The Rynmere University Sports Clubs are university-affiliated martial education clubs that meet two- to three-times every ten-trial and offer both students and Andaris residents access to both individual and group training in a variety of martial options (see below).

Joining the Sports Clubs

Rynmere University students can pay a seasonal fee of 10gn to become a member of a single division of the Sports Clubs, and they can join up to two additional divisions for a further discounted price of 5gn a season each. However, fitting three different Club training sessions into a student's schedule is rather difficult. An Andaris resident who wishes to join a Sports Club for training purposes can join one Club division per season for 20gn, and they do not receive a discount on joining any additional Club divisions. Non-students are not limited in the number of Club divisions they join, but PCs are encouraged to consider the time that must be invested in participating in multiple Clubs.

Each Club meets a certain number of times per ten-trial (see below for a rough schedule) for group classes. These classes consist of 5-10 students and a single instructor. In order to reflect the training received in these classes, a participant may write up to 2 threads per season representing their activities in the Club and the knowledges gained during that class. Individual one-on-one sessions with an instructor may also be requested once per season for 50gn a session, regardless of whether the player is a student or an Andaris resident. A one-on-one session does not count toward the 2 thread per season cap.

Once a year, each Club has a tournament to determine ranking within each Club division and participants can progress up a scale based on their competency level in the combat-related skill they have been in a class for. Once a participant reaches Expert level in the skill or skills for that particular Club division, they may apply to become an Instructor within that Club in a Division of their focus. Becoming a Rynmere University Sports Club instructor counts as one of a PC's two jobs and allows them to receive wages as per a teacher based on their skills, job thread written that season, and seasons' worked just like any other form of in-game employment.

Sports Club Divisions

Grappling/Unarmed
The most basic and often necessary of all combat skills begins with Unarmed Combat. This basic fighting style teaches students a combination of brawling and grappling skills but there is no specific martial art style taught within this Club Division. Instead, participants are taught self-discipline, strength, endurance, and how to use timing and distance to their advantage in Unarmed Combat. Nearly all students interested in joining any other Sports Clubs are encouraged to begin with a class in Grappling, as all other Clubs build off of the fundamentals taught in this Club.

Techniques, maneuvers, and counters applied to an opponent in order to gain physical advantage in hand-to-hand combat are the basic tenants of what is taught in Grappling Club. Learning to improve one's position, to escape, to injure one's opponent in important areas, and evasion techniques are taught as a precursor to weapon training. Offensive unarmed combat is not taught in any systematic form such as a martial arts discipline would teach in any Novice class, but instead participants are taught how to use their bodies defensively against an opponent in order to gain a strategic advantage in a combat situation. Advanced Technique classes offer more offensive unarmed training in the form of Brawling, Boxing, and Mixed Idalos Martial Arts styles.

Grappling Club has a bit of a rowdy reputation as being a gateway into the Fighting Pits for many a participant, but such a statement is dismissed as rumors by both the University and Club staff. That said, should one have a way with words, finding additional Unarmed Training outside of what the Clubs offer is knowledge one could discover from the instructors.

Grappling Club Divisions meet three times per ten-trial.


Dagger
As a somewhat universal weapon that anyone of any age can learn to use, Dagger Club teaches participants how to use the utility tool as a side arm. There are two levels to dagger training: the first level teaches basic footwork, evasion, and re-direction maneuvers while the second level teaches actual combat offensive and defensive attacks with both a single dagger and eventually a pair. All dagger combat is taught from an unarmored perspective.

Dagger Club Divisions are often regarded as a build-on to Grappling Clubs as many of the techniques are based on Unarmed Combat foundations.

Dagger Club Divisions meet twice per ten-trial.


Blades
Blades Club Divisions are based on the type of blade to be studied, with the three main Divisions being Longsword, Rapier, Short Sword and Sabre. Additional bladed weapons Divisions do exist within the Sports Club, but these four blades are perhaps the most common of weapons used throughout Idalos. Each blade type has a single instructor and a single class devoted to it, with some classes allowing crossover training days so that students can spar with other blade types and gain skills in countering and defending against different opponents.

Most Sports Clubs members are participants in a Blades Division and many of them take their Division very seriously. These are the most competitive and proud groups within the Sports Clubs and intramural rivalry is encouraged throughout the Rynmere University campus—students often have favorites among the Club members and will take up their names in the form of posters, pennants, and chants of encouragement during the once an arc Tournaments in Ymiden for ranking within the Clubs. Names and faces of these favorites are well known throughout Andaris and sometimes even the rest of Rynmere.

Blades Club Divisions meet three times per ten-trial.


Shields
Shield Club Divisions are perhaps the smallest Division within the Sports Clubs, often overlooked in favor of the flashier Blades options or perhaps just never reached by those with passing interest. Shielded Combat techniques are taught on several levels through several classes, beginning with the Buckler. At this time, there are no instructors to teach Tower Shield techniques, but a variety of smaller shielded combat technique instructors are available.,

All Shield Club Divisions require a student to have had at least one season of training in Blades because shields such as the buckler and round shield are used as companion weapons in hand-to-hand combat. Defensive techniques such as protection from melee combat and ranged combat are taught in Shield Club, but the shield itself is also used offensively and taught accordingly in advanced Club classes.

Shield Club Divisions meet twice per ten-trial.


Archery
Archery Club Divisions are another very popular part of the Rynmere University Sports Clubs, rivaling only Blades Clubs. Both Long and Short bow techniques as well as Crossbows can be learned in Archery classes, though the focus is mostly on bows because of ease of use for more participants. Archery Club fees include an additional 5gn/season due to the costs of arrows and bolts as additional equipment.

The Archery Club Tournaments are just as fierce and even more popular than the Blade Club tournaments. They are generally held in Vhalar and are the highlight of that arc for those who enjoy archery in Andaris. Much like Blade Club, names of popular participants are well-known, gossiped about, spread on posters and made into chants. The betting pool for Archery Club Tournaments is big business among the student population, and tuition fortunes can be won and lost in Vhalar over University favorites in archery.

Still, he is committed to teaching self-defense to anyone willing to learn and has a soft spot for the vulnerable. He’s a calm, patient instructor despite his tumultuous past.

He doesn’t pull punches, however, and is the most likely to send students home bloodied so that they learn what “the real world” is like.

He’s the organizer of tournaments and the current President of the Rynmere University Sports Club

Blaine is known to be dour, serious, and somewhat strict as an Instructor. He is still an excellent archer and a somewhat decent teacher, though one must get used to his mannerisms before really learning.

Uro is every bit a seafaring Biqaj. He comes to his classes as if on a breeze and always has a new story on his lips. He’s young and dashing and quite amazing with the crossbow—another local favorite in the Tournament that is held once a year. He loves meeting new students, is a patient teacher, and often absorbs their stories like a sponge. He can come across as overly touchy and flirtatious, but no one has ever really complained.

Student Membership:
10gn/season for one class + 5gn/season for each additional class, max of 3 classes total.

Non-Student Membership:
20gn/season per class, no class limits

Private Session:
50gn/class

Ymiden Combat Tournament:
20gn registration fee, prizes TBD

Vhalar Archery Tournament:
20gn registration fee, prizes TBD

Employment

The Rynmere University Sports Clubs are always looking for new instructors. Instructors must have reached Expert level in the particular combat skill they’d like to teach. Currently, more unarmed and shielded combat instructors would be welcome and there is a 50gn sign-on bonus for those who qualify.

Students and Andaris residents are welcome to apply to become instructors. Other employment opportunities include Tournament organizers and tacticians.
