Hello,
It's been quite a long time since last I had actual time to commit to writing anything longer than a few pages. In the past year or so, most of my interaction with RP has been down to just our longstanding DnD session. Since I keep travelling between two countries at least twice a month, even that is sometimes hard to pull off on a weekly basis. Still, we usually manage to pull off at least 4-5 sessions in a month. This leaves something close to another 20 days where there is nothing left to scratch my role playing itch. I would very much like it to be this place, but I still remained hesitant for a looooong time. I think it was even something like a month since I registered. I carefully took my time weighing whether or not I could even commit - because if I ever started and was then forced to abandon a character because of work, I wouldn't feel right. I finally mustered motivation to move on my desires and hope to find a base of operations here.
Alright, as for experience - I've been a member of Mizahar since sometimes in 2010 and have been on and off the site many times in the process, but I think I've spent a good 5 years actively playing there. In the times I would spend away from Mizahar, I frequented another forum called RP guild. This other forum could never really hold my attention for more than a couple of months at a time, and I would always return to Mizahar.
So the running question would probably be - why not just stick with Mizahar? Well, after all of your threading partners leave the site for the Nth time and you lock yourself out of a few seasons because you had no time to commit and in the meantime the domains themselves closed - well all of this feels like Swiss cheese. Your characters become a bunch of holes built on more holes, and before you know it you have no idea where you're building from anymore, let alone what you're building towards. Regardless of the hundreds of hours I've spent writing there, I've long since lost all attachment to my stories on the site. I still frequently visit it to see what has changed and what the current 'big thing' is, but there is no longer a real place for me there. There will always be room inside of me for that place, I just feel like I no longer belong there. I hope to develop at least half of that love for this place.
I'm not new to playing these sorts of games. I don't feel like I'll need guidance other than the welcoming message to create a fully functional character, but what I would like to know what the community's pet peeves are. What is so overdone that it makes you nauseous to read about it again and again and again. When it came to Mizahar, we had huge predator Kelvics, every 10th character had amnesia as a backstory (because fuck backstory), every 20th character started with 3-4 personal magic skills and wanted to become the new god of magic...
So that's my biggest question going into this - what do I stay away from? I'm sure I could competently write even overcooked concepts, but I feel it's my duty as a writer to surprise my threading partners, as I expect the same in return. So I'd like you to help me with this.
I'm an online ESL teacher, and this introduction is done in my pause between classes. My coffee and I are cuddling as this is being typed. I have another class in a few moments, so I'll bid you all a good day. I'll look more into the kind of character I want to play after my classes for today are done. The excitement I feel at this moment should translate very well into the rest of my classes.
So, hi!
This is Nitis, and I'm happy to be here.

Hello, Nitis! Welcome to ST. I too am from this site mentioned, and I understand exactly what you're talking about, haha.
As for pet peeves on ST, I don't personally have any. I don't think we really have too many... obligatory, overly common tropes here? Maybe that sounds too idyllic, but I personally feel that the PCs invented on ST tend to be incredibly unique. So, I'd go with whatever interests you - don't worry about being 'overcooked'!
Nice to have you here. If you need any help, let me know!

Welcome. I believe I will be thirding the statements above. I am Nymph, one of the moderators of the Southern Region. I would agree that there are no types of character particularly overdone at this time. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions. We hope your time here is exciting and filled with amazing stories.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be then me.

Thanks for the welcome!
Hopefully, I'll be able to craft alone, but If I'm stumped for something I'll be sure to look for help. Apparently my hands are free.
Is there some sort of way I could see well established characters divided by race - just to get more of a sense for how people depict Aukari, Eidisi and Ellune? It's surely between these 3 for me - unless I hit the panic button and make a Human.

We don't really have an Ellune yet, which is a travesty. Playing one true to the lore would be a great niche I'd love to see, because those eight foot tall giants that shoot cold beams outta their eyes are something funny! Same with full-blooded Avriel. I think there's only been one 'true' Faldrun-fanatic Aukari and I'm not sure if she's active. Can't remember her name.
As far as peeves go? None of us really care about anything. On the other site the drums got rattled a lot more, and we're much more relaxed and forgiving here within the rules. Characters can only start with 2 Domain Magics, OR a Blessing. A lot of us are concerned with plot more than power, even if our characters become powerful to chase those plots.
I guess my one peeve is players being too perfect, not failing enough, trying to be too cool? I love seeing failures and humility in writing.
Just write what seems the most fun, don't write yourself into a corner. Rynmere and Etzos are both swimming in plots, and Ne'haer/Scalvoris are starting to rise as well. There's a lot more freedom with NPC's and such in ST, you can get away with a lot more, and you don't have to write up every location you visit.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. PM with questions!
