It was not a comfortable time of rest for any of them. For Lakia the breaks passed in a bit of a blur. However, as long as she kept taking sips of water and nibbles of food, by the time she woke up she felt better. Not great, not by a very long stretch, but her body had started to make the blood she had lost, the raft had held and the warm Faldrass sand had held the hypothermia at bay.

Now, in fairness, she still felt absolutely awful, was in a lot of pain and prone to feeling light headed. However, compared to how she was before she rested, it was a vast, vast improvement.

Amaris had an issue, of course, in the fact that the bottom of her boot no longer existed and the floor was covered in goo and far, far too cold for her to walk barefoot. Jackson's lower half was around somewhere, and he had been wearing a pair of perfectly good boots. Maybe they were still there if anyone wanted to look. Also, Amaris had spent the time with a highly unpleasant taste in her mouth which meant that the new dawn (or whatever time it actually was) found Amaris feeling highly nauseous, a little bit dizzy and unable to face eating.

Padraig felt the same symptoms arising from the unpleasant taste in his mouth, it might reasonably appear that the pair of them were experiencing the side effects of some strange toxin or another. When they had settled down, Padraig had checked on Niv and found the small Tunawa fast asleep in the waterfall, covered in yellow goo which had obviously splattered over her. No amount of trying to wake her up worked, so she was going to need to be put into a pocket for safety.

Then, of course, there were a few questions to be answered as they got ready to move. Where were they going to go? What were they going to do? Where was Arwel? None of them knew exactly when they had lost him, which was not ideal.

Now that the time had passed, the acid had burned or melted or been diluted away in the snow and ice on the ground which meant that, after rest was much easier for Niv than before it. The purple spiders were all dead and the white ones were all gone. The ceiling had not caved in any further and the lake, should they look over there again?

Well the lake was frozen again.

And the face in the ceiling was back.

[Moderated Thread]Mapping the Ice Caves: Trial 3

Their rest was not very restful for Lakia, and she groaned and hauled herself to her feet when it was time to get going. She was feeling better and definitely warmer, but her hand and arm hurt like fire and she was light headed, but she could function if she needed too. And she did, if they were going to get out of here.

Looking at her companions, she immediately noticed Amaris's lack of a boot and sighed. "Jackson's boots are out there somewhere. I'll go find them." she said, as she stepped out into the main part of the cave, before she paused and looked out over the lake she had nearly drowned in before letting out a long, growling sigh. "If someone wants that melted again, they can be my guest. I've had my fill." she said as she headed out to the debris of their fight with the spider, looking for Jackson's boots.

Fortunately, it didn't take her long to find their guides boots. Unfortunately, they were still filled with feet. A bit of work, made more difficult with her injured arm and light headedness, saw the boots freed of Jackson's feet, though they were covered in his blood. Picking up the now empty boots, she took them back and tossed them to Amaris. "Here. We can't have you being barefoot." she said, her voice calm.

"We should still map while we try to get out of here. Discounting the spider, Jackson's methods are still the most likely to get us out of here, as we aren't as likely to be surprised if we circuit the rooms first." she said, shaking her head to try and clear it a bit. "Besides, if things do south again, I'd rather know about the room I'm in." she said, before looking to the exit where the spider had come from. "I say we take the spiders door. I doubt if anything lived with it, and there might be something down there that'll help us, if anyone besides us came here.

It had been a rough night, if it had been nighttime at all. Somewhere along the line Padraig had managed to lose track of the passage of time.

He'd made sure that Lakia was in as comfortable a place as he could find before heading out in search of Niv. And when he finally found her, having failed to wake her, he'd spent additional time cleaning her off and slipping her into a warm pocket with one of the smaller sacks of orange sand.

It had been a fitful sleep, and much of his wakefulness was spent checking on Lakia to make sure she was faring well enough. At least as well as could be expected. And at some point, he'd taken the time to strip off his bottom-most layer of clothing to replace it with something clean from his sack.

He woke feeling nauseated and parched, and while water helped with his thirst, not so much with his churning stomach. In the kit that he'd brought, he found some ginger root and after breaking off a piece for Amaris, he took some for himself to chew in hopes of taking the edge off.

Once they were ready to head out again, he could only agree with Lakia's approach. He'd leave the frozen lake alone, but the place where the now dead spider had come from seemed like a logical place to start. That way then, but as they went he'd be sure to keep his sword in hand, just in case.

The morning did not bring any relief. In fact, it brought worse tiding for Amaris. The bottom of their boot had been eaten away at by the acidic purple substance of the spider from the previous trial, and the strange taste they’d been experiencing had progressed into something else. They had not slept, plagued by the recurring images of Jackson’s demise on repeat. Closing their eyes only brought forth the unfortunate sensations of the trial past.

The nausea and dizziness were of no use to making anything better. Even if they had worked up the strength to eat, it was not likely that they would have. Having not heard the Naerikk speak to them the first time, they glanced down at the boot offered to them. Coated in blood, it was obviously Jackson’s boot. There was no obvious reaction aside from the shaking in their hands a they switched boots. It was not warm, as they had thought, but that made sense. Jackson had been dead for quite a few breaks and the caves were cold. It was likely he had gone cold quite some time ago. And now they wore his boot.

Amaris’ eyes remained trained on the other goo-splattered shoe. Best not to agitate themselves further. Standing became the next item on the list of things to do. It was a task that required more effort than usual, the dizziness quite the foe in the moment. But stood they did and their reward was a ginger root from Padraig. The hybrid offered their thanks quietly before chewing on it.

Nausea fading some, they listened in as decisions were made. They did not trust themselves with speech and kept quiet. Perhaps they were avoiding it as much as Amaris had tried to, but a heavy blame rested on them. Their guide’s boot on their foot was enough of a reminder of it, as well as the grim aftermath of the previous trial that had dried over their coat. They flicked dried goo and...other substances from the coat as best they could, almost feverishly, but still some remained.

It was decided that they would use the exit that the snake-spider had come from. This idea struck them immediately as not the brightest, but then again, they had no right to choose where they went.

There was, perhaps, a joke to be made regarding the phrase "dead man's shoes", but probably not at the moment. Right at the moment there was nothing remotely funny going on. With Niv's apparent unconsciousness / sleep, the number of them was diminished further and they had effectively lost two people in that room.

However, that left three of them together and one of them missing in action. Arwel had disappeared, or rather not re appeared when they sat on the bench, as far as anyone could recall and, if they took stock of the situation they were in, it wasn't good. Lakia was weakened, there was no doubt about it. Weakened and injured. The medical care Padraig had given her might save her from losing digits or limbs from hypothermia, but how well she fared depended, very much, on what lay ahead. Padraig and Amaris were not injured like Lakia was, but they both felt increasingly nauseous. For both of them, also, there was a feeling that their tongue was swelling, dry and uncomfortable.

And, of course, not one of them knew where they were.

On the plus side, Amaris now had a pair of boots again and the ginger root helped them both. There were all sorts of things in that first kit, carefully labelled with what they were and when to use them. Although Amaris was quiet regarding the decision, the three of them agreed to go into the area from where the giant spider-snake had appeared. Presumably not hoping that they'd find another.

Did they do anything else in this room before they left?

The dark ice they stepped into was different than the black ice which had sucked light. This didn't, not at all but as they stepped together, they might notice that their footfalls made no sound. None at all. If they spoke, their voices sounded as they always did, but there was no echo or reverberation against the walls.

The opening led them into a cavern. It was large, although nothing compared to the one they had just left. It's ceiling / roof was dark bubbles of black ice and the floor was uneven, not snow in here but rocks and stones, slippery ice patches and a treacherous terrain to walk.

In this cavern were four large cages. Two on their left, two on their right. Each cage was large enough that the spider-snake could have come from them, and had a friend in there, too. It hadn't, though, because each cage was locked. The bars were black metal, cold but not frozen if anyone touched it. Not an easily identified metal to any of them. The cages had doors and the doors were locked. There was, however, a hook on the wall which had keys hanging from it. The keys seemed to be fairly normal-looking, as far as keys went and they looked to be so old, rusted and utterly ancient that they might crumble to dust if someone breathed on them.

The cages each had inhabitants, but the inhabitants were long dead. The darkness and the size combined to make it very difficult to determine exactly what the cages held, what those inhabitants had once been. It would require going into the cages to be sure, but only one held what seemed to be a group of people. The other three had large blocks and chunks of iced remains ~ an animal expert might be able to determine more, which might be important, of course. Adding to the confusion was that, in each cage the inhabitants had been huddled together when they died.

Other than that, opposite them, on the other side of the cavern was another exit, still in the dark ice. It did not take an expert tracker to know that the spider-snake had come from whatever was beyond that exit, its tracks were obvious.

As the group entered the new room, Lakia pulled out her map. "Let's make the circuit, so we know the room. Be careful near the door." she said, her voice terse. Whether the others did or not, Lakia made the circuit, same as she would have if Jackson were still leading them, and mapped it out as she went. As she passed by the cage containing human remains, she peered into it, looking to see if they had left anything behind. She also tested the gate to see if it was as brittle as the keys looked to be, though she didn't hit it. She was injured enough already without punching metal bars.

When she completed her circuit, she looked around the room. "Unless we can get into these cages, I don't think there's much in the way of samples to collect." she said quietly, before she walked over to the keys. Gingerly, she took hold of one and lifted it from the key ring. If it crumbled to dust, she'd merely shrug and step aside, waiting to head into the next room. If it stayed solid, she'd try it on the cage with the humanoid remains, hoping for some manner of supplies to be found therein.

There was a silence to their steps that Amaris was not comforted by as they went through the dark ice. They did not speak, and something kept them from doing so. Maybe it was the swelling of their tongue. The cavern they entered was large, but not like the one they had left, and lined with four cages. What had once been in the cages was indistinguishable--except the one full of people. It was like another repeat of the corpses by the pond in the first trial. Maybe those had been a warning, or perhaps this was it. The hybrid tried not to think so much about it.

Another cursory examination of the cavern left them facing the tracks of the spider-snake, frozen in place. As was expected, the tracks came from another point of entry. They didn't want to think about there being another one of those things, and turned away before their thoughts could get any further towards that point. Lakia, there impromptu leader, stated that they would need to get into the cages. There was no telling what any of those things were, and Amaris doubted they could go through anymore battles in their current state. But, there could also be useful information.

"If we are to check the cages, I think doing it one by one would be best," Amaris stated. Their voice sounded off, muffled around their own tongue. They frowned. It could just be a trick of their already impaired thinking, but something was becoming increasingly wrong with them. And it had started before the spider-snake's appearance.

As they headed out after a fitful rest, none of them were in very good shape. Including Padraig. Still he was probably faring better than the others, and now and then he'd checked his pocket to make sure that he hadn't developed a hole that his tiny friend might fall through and get lost. And to ensure that she was alright. If she didn't wake before they finally found their way out of this place, he'd take her straight to Faith.

Before they moved on from the room where the battle with the spider had taken place, and where Jackson Eclipse had died, he took several samples with great care. There was nothing he wanted to touch with bare skin after all or even his gloves or clothing. But he took samples of the different colors of goo, acidic or no, bits of spider large and small. And finally he searched the carnage for something of Jackson's. A ring maybe? Some personal effect that he could pick up, store away and return with when they were done.

Maybe the man had family or other loved ones to give it to. If they couldn't retrieve the body then at least they might have something personal they could give to those who'd personally cared about him. The absence of an echo was odd, and the black ice they passed through was different than the other before it. With that in mind, along with mapping the place as they went, Padraig scraped a bit of the ice into a vial from his sack.

The way was slippery and the icy bubbles strange. And as before, Padraig continued taking notes and drawing as best he could. He couldn't say he was eager to step inside any of the cages. But if he could reach any of the corpses without actually having to go inside, he'd take samples from each of those as well. When Lakia experimented with the keys, he'd wait to see if the one she tried remained whole. If it disintegrated? The others would presumably do the same.

Lakia had, it seemed, become the unofficial leader of the group and in truth that was no bad thing. They needed someone to step up and so the Naerikk did. There was still a feeling of shock among them which was almost palpable, but they could not stay in that cavern, because to do so would be to die a slow death. Instead, they determined that they were going to continue in the direction the spider-snake had come from and follow Jackson's technique of map-circuit-explore. It had worked thus far, after all.

In the spider-snake room, Padraig took samples. It was the right thing to do, if they were going to continue with what Jackson had established. He also took the time to try and find something personal of Jackson's and he managed that, also. A plain but long-worn wedding ring, judging by the pale white indentation on his finger when Padraig removed it, and a small, plain silver locket.

That done, they made their way together the three of them with the sleeping Tunawa in Padraig's pocket, leaving behind the body of their fallen guide.

In the new room, with the cages, Lakia just tested the door of the cage with the humanoids in it, and there they discovered something interesting. The bars were warm to the touch, and whilst the bars themselves were in a state of very good repair, like they were immune to the elements, the lock mechanisms in the cages were not and with just a little pressure from Lakia, the cage door swung open, and then fell off as the hinges, too, crumbled away.

Should they try the same with the keys, they would find that they, too, crumbled.

However, what that meant was that there were now four cages which they could access. It also meant that they had four metal bar doors which were warm, if they could think of any use for them. If they followed Amaris' suggestion of doing so one cage at a time, then they would start at the cage with the humanoids in there. Since it was, by its very nature, open.

In there were huddled together a group of six adults and two children. They ranged in age and in race ~ there were two Biqaj, two Humans and two mixed-race adults, the children were both Human, it seemed. They were four females, two males for the adults and both female children.

Padraig recognised one of the children. He'd seen her twice already down here, after all. Once, he'd smiled at her as he held her hand. She was wearing the same dress as she had been when he'd seen her and her feet were bare.

Everyone recognised one of the human women. Especially Lakia~ she'd been close to that face which had been (and still was) hung in the ceiling of the room behind them in the split trill before being submerged in freezing water, after all. They also recognised the other child ~ from a statue in a different room, where there had been a table and frozen food. Come to which, she was held in the embrace of a woman and the two of them were in exactly the pose the statues had been in.

Yet these were, without a doubt, the corpses of people who had been flesh and blood. They were all perfectly preserved, like they might have died just breaks ago, yet judging by everything else, they had been here a long, long time. They were, indeed, frozen in the way that the corpses had been in the first room. Of course, when Lakia had punched them they had shattered.

There was nothing which was directly and immediately useful to the group. It was more than possible that the corpses here also had trinkets on them, but that would require a more purposeful searching and moving of the bodies.

If they went to the next cage, in there they would find corpses of four legged animals. It was here that things started to get slightly more weird, or at least weird in a different way. In there were wolves. Again, frozen in perfect form, like they had just died, but these were not whole. Precisely, they were frozen together in one very strange, very unnerving wolf-statue. Amaris, who was a student of zoology, after all, would be able to ascertain that this was a sort of mish-mash golem-like construct of maybe ten, but probably eight wolves. Chopped up and smooshed together, but for what purpose was not clear.

The third cage was more odd. Again, it contained a strange construct of pieces of animal, but this time it would take Amaris to identify this. In this cage there were spiders and they were spliced up and mixed in with snakes. Amaris would have to work hard to identify number, but as an estimate, there were about eight there, too.

Then, the final cage and here, they could all recognise the animal, although it was in the same state of being in parts that the others were. Beautiful white tigers were the inhabitants of the final cage.

One thing that they saw in each of the caves was that each of the humanoids and each construct of animal had a number of large (about the palm of your hand sized, roughly) apparently crystalline snowflakes around them. Each person had one, either in their hand, on their lap or so on. The constructions had them dotted around, also.

That was all they could find by simply looking. Did they draw, did they take samples? And once they were done ~ where did they go? Continuing on in this direction would lead them to where the spider-snake came from, presumably, since the tracks led out of the exit opposite where they had come in.
