Market Day

33rd Ashan, 717

It was cloudy, but pleasantly warm as Tei'serin rode into the city. The crowd of fellow travelers made her very nervous, and she had to work hard not to cringe away from them. But she had been sent to Ne'haer on a mission. Or...at least she thought she had. Thorin's instructions had been very clear on the matter. She had to be in Ne'haer on Traveller's Day, and do what so many other people would be doing on that trial; spend money.

To be honest, Tei'serin didn't know what to think about the order. Normally, she was forbidden to make the trip into the city. But Thorin had come for a "visit" on the 27th of Ashan. While there, he had informed her that she would be making the two trial ride into the city so she could be there for the festival. After making sure that she had enough nels to cover what he wanted her to do, he gave her a list of merchants he wanted her to buy from, and how much he wanted her to spend at each one. What she bought from them had been left to her for the most part, with the exception of the instruction to buy herself some "nice clothes" from one of the merchants.

Although she had no real idea whey she had been given the orders she had, she thought she could make some guesses. The merchants Thorin had ordered her to go to had likely pleased him in some way. Her spending nels at their establishments was probably a reward for pleasing him. She could, of course, be entirely wrong in her guess. Her guardian hadn't exactly been forthcoming on details of why he wanted her to do this; just do it, and do it right...or else.

But the why of it almost didn't matter. Riding into the city to buy things was far from the worst thing she had ever been ordered to do. And with the weather turning nicer as the season progressed, the ride itself had been a pleasant one. Besides...if she was being allowed to go into the city, for whatever the reason, she was going to take full advantage of it. She had things of her own that she wanted to do while she was in the city.

Market Day

Her first stop was located not far from the gates leading out of the city. Ever since Moseke had given her her mark, she had wanted to visit the Southern Temple in Ne'haer at least once.
Tei'aerin "spoke" to Moseke in her prayers all the time. But it seemed different somehow; perhaps more appropriate when she thought about praying to her at a temple dedicated just to her. At the very least, it felt more formal than praying to Moseke wherever she happened to be, or at the small shrine she had created for the Immortal she served.

As Tei'serin entered the Southern Temple, her first thought was that it was nothing at all like what she had been expecting. In her mind, temples were large, grand buildings filled with burning incense, and candles. They had a solemn air about them that made one feel small, and insignificant in the face of the Immortal they had come to worship. The Southern Temple was certainly grand...but in a very different way.

It was a huge, beautiful explosion of...life. Nestled within the depths of a stunningly beautiful park stood a single stone building. Tall stone pillars held up the roof of the building forming an outer wall of sorts. As Tei'serin went further inside, she found a statue of Moseke. She stared at the statue in awe for several bits before dropping to her knees in humble worship.

Moseke, I don't know what you saw in me the trial you gave me your mark. I felt so helpless when I was unable to heal that injured deer. Even knowing that I had done what I could didn't make me feel better, because I knew she would almost certainly still die of her injury. And with her, her fawn since it was too young to survive on its own. But you saved them both. And you saw something in me that trial. I can only hope that I am able to live up to whatever you saw in me. she prayed silently.

After a while, she stood, and after lingering a few more bits to gaze on the beauty of Moseke's statue, she left the building. But she didn't leave the temple itself. Tei'serin wanted to explore the park that surrounded it for a while longer. As she walked, she found a small pond, and she stopped to look out over the water for a short time before continuing on. A rare sense of peace and contentment came over Tei'serin as she wandered around the temple. She felt welcome here; at home. It was a rare, and wonderful feeling. Although she felt that she could spend all trial here quite happily, Tei'serin knew that she had a lot of things she needed to do. Her guardian had specifically said that he did not want her spending the night in the city. So with reluctance, she turned to go.

On the way towards the exit, she found a number of stands that were selling merchandise. Much of it consisted of the kinds of supplies one might need if they were going on a journey. But one of the stands was offering charms and amulets as mementos from one's visit to the temple. Wanting to take a better look, she warred with herself briefly as she debated whether she had enough time. Her interest in the charms won out, and she paused to take a closer look.

The charms were simple things. Most were pebbles carved into the shape of twisting roots, or small paper prayers carefully held in colored pouches. Both types of charms were on leather strips that could be worn around the neck, or wrist. Tei'serin was entranced by their simple beauty. One in particular caught her attention; a dark colored carved pebble no bigger than the first joint of her thumb. It was a grey so dark that it looked almost black. The details in the carving were both simple, and elegant. Even her inexperienced eyes could see that the person who carved the charm knew what they were doing. What made the charm even more interesting was the tiny lighter flecks embedded in the pebble. When the light hit it the right way, it looked as if they were glowing.

"May I help you?"

"How much is this charm?"

"Normally it would be eight gold nels. But since it is Traveler's Day, I'll sell it to you for four gold nels in the spirit of the festival. What do you say?"

The merchant didn't need to ask twice.

"I'll take it." she told her with a smile, as she handed her the money.

She grinned at her.

"I was hoping that you would say that. Would you like me to wrap that up for you, or would you like to wear it?

"I'd like to wear it, please."

With her business concluded, Tei'serin made her way out of the temple, and towards the first of the shops she had been ordered to visit; Siason's Stichery. Her reasoning was that if she had to carry her purchases throughout the trial, at least bags of clothing would be lighter, and easier to carry than heavier, more bulky items would be. But she hoped that even that wouldn't be necessary. With luck, she would be able to leave her purchases at the stores she made them in, and pick them up once she was ready to leave the city.

Thorin had given her precise directions how to get to each of the merchants he wanted her to visit. Making her way through the crowd was an unexpected challenge since she wasn't used to dealing with the sheer number of people that were out and about on their own business. Despite her difficulties navigating through the crowds, she made it to her destination in one piece.

Once inside, it was quickly obvious that what she had been expecting was a far cry from the reality of the shop. Tei'serin had been expecting ready made pieces of clothing that she would take with her when she left the store, or, if lucky, pick them up when she was ready to leave the city. What she got was a waiting room that was painted with warm, welcoming colors. Paintings of a variety of dresses and other types of clothing filled the walls. Tei'serin could only guess that they were of clothes that had been made in the shop. Possibly by the owner, themselves. A large, open room was visible behind the counter where a woman stood, making a purchase. Tei'serin could see people hard at work in that room, sewing the clothes that must be made here in the store. There were racks filled with clothing displayed throughout the room, but it almost seemed as though they were displays of the talent of those who worked here, rather than items ready for someone to buy. Uncertain of what else to do, Tei'serin walked over to look through one of the racks.

"May I help you, Miss?"

Tei'serin looked up in time to watch as the woman who had been making a purchase left the shop briskly.

"Maybe?" Tei'serin half asked uncertainly.

The woman who had spoken to her chuckled as she walked out from behind the counter, and approached her.

"My name is Nicasia Siason, and I own this shop. If you tell me what you're looking for, maybe I can help you." she offered.

"I was sent here to buy some clothes for myself. But...this place looks like all the clothes are custom made? See...I don't live in the city. It takes me a good two trials to make the trip here, and I can't get into the city often. So coming back to pick up anything I buy now would be difficult for me."

Could she have gotten the wrong place somehow? Tei'serin didn't think so. Thorin's orders had been very clear, as had the consequences of failing to complete them to his satisfaction.

"You say that someone sent you here? If I may ask, who sent you? Knowing that may tell me if I can help you or not."

"My guardian, a man named Thorin, sent me." Tei'serin said uneasily.

Her guardian hadn't forbidden her to mention his name to anyone...but he hadn't said that she could use it, either. And doing anything other than what he had "asked" of her was likely to lead to punishment. Tei'serin knew that from many arcs of painful experience.

"Ah, I see. In that case, we can definitely work something out. Thorin buys clothes from us quite frequently, and this isn't the first time he has sent a young woman such as yourself in to us. Will this work? As long as you buy anything you want to order from us now, we can hold the clothes until the next time Thorin stops by with another order for us. I assume that he will be able to get the clothes you buy to you the next time he sees you?"

Tei'serin nodded slowly, wondering what other young women Thorin bought clothes for as she did so. That could work. It might even have been what Thorin had planned for. And it would mean that Tei'serin wouldn't have to worry about how she was going to get the clothes she bought home. Of course, it meant that her guardian was likely to come pay her another visit soon, but Tei'serin had no control over that. He came whenever he wanted to, and would do so whether he had something to bring to her, or not.

"Yes, I think it would. Thank you."

"Excellent! Now tell me exactly what you're looking for." Nicasia ordered in a no nonsense tone.

"I was hoping to buy some skirts, and blouses mostly. Both for now, and for when the weather turns cold, so some should be made out of wool, and the others...maybe taffeta like the bluse I'm wearing now? I don't know much about the different materials used in clothing. But I'm a teacher, and an herbalist in Treth. I need clothes I can work in without worrying about them getting stained and damaged, but I also need them to look nice." she began hesitantly.

"I also want to buy a coat, a cloak, and a pair of gloves for the cold seasons. And some...err..."

Tei'serin blushed deeply. The shopkeeper chuckled in amusement.

"Can I assume that you are hoping to buy some undergarments as well, then?"

Tei'serin nodded quickly, her blush deepening even further.

"Yes. Five pairs of white ones, please. And a pair of slippers, and two nightgowns; one for now, and a wool one for the cold seasons." Tei'serin finished quickly.

"How many blouses and skirts would you want?"

"Maybe two each in taffeta, and wool for the skirts? One white, and one black for each?"

Black and white were both easy to match a wide variety of colors with. If she stuck with those colors for her skirts, she would be able to buy fewer of them, and still have a decent number of outfits because she could match them with different blouses.

"And I'd like eight blouses; three taffeta ones, and five wool ones, please."

The discussion turned to the colors she wanted, and the little "extras" such as added embroidery. When Nicasia knew what Tei'serin was looking for, prices were negotiated, and aggreed upon, taking into consideration the fact that Tei'serin was paying for the clothes on Traveler's Day. Then she turned her over to one of her seamstresses so they could take her measurements. When the seamstress was finished, Tei'serin thanked the woman politely before leaving.

Market Day

As Tei'serin left the shop, she got the distinct feeling that she was being watched. Startled, and more than a little uneasy, she looked around, but all she could see was people going about their business. So she dismissed it, telling herself that she just wasn't used to being around so many people. Treth was tiny compared to Ne'haer, and that fact was painfully obvious with so many people out shopping, and taking advantage of the lower prices during the festival.

The next stop on her list was Valfield Farms. Tei'serin didn't know why she would be sent to a farm in Ne'haer when there were plenty of farms in Treth that she could buy goods from. Especially when buying anything she needed from a local farm would be helping her neighbors out. But orders were orders, and Tei'serin wasn't brave enough to question them. It did fit her theory of Thorin using her to reward merchants that had pleased him by sending them business, though. Especially when she had learned that her guardian was a regular customer at Siason's Stichery.

As Tei'serin looked around the farm, she quickly realized that it was just that; a farm. She wasn't certain what she had been expecting, of a "city" farm, but it was no different than the ones around Treth.

"May I help you?"

Tei'serin jumped a little at the unexpected voice. She had been so caught up in her own thoughts that she forgotten the possibility that someone might approach her.

"Umm...maybe?" she said uncertainly.

The man chuckled warmly.

"Are you lost, then? If so, perhaps I could give you directions?" he offered.

"No, I'm not lost." Tei'serin said softly.

Tei'serin hesitated as she tried to figure out what to say. Finally, she decided to go with a somewhat altered version of the truth.

"It's like this. My guardian sent me into the city on an errand of sorts. Coming to Ne'haer is a rare treat for me, so I think that he wanted to make the trip fun, and challenging for me. Almost like a game of sorts. So his instructions for this trip are rather...unique. In one store, he told me what I should buy, but not how much I could spend there. His instructions were "as much as it takes." That led me to believe that I should try to haggle the price down as low as I could, since he only gave me a set amount of nels to spend for the entire trip. Here, on the other hand...I was given an amount that I am supposed to spend. But he didn't tell me what to buy; just that it can't be so much as a single copper nel more or less than the amount he listed."

"That does sound like an...interesting way to get your shopping done. It's certainly different, at any rate."

Tei'serin nodded.

"Well, do you have any idea what you might need that we could offer you?"

Tei'serin gave the matter some thought.

"Maybe. I live on a farm. But I am not a farmer, so I don't make my living off of the land. Even so, I would like it if the farm could produce much of what I need to get by. I do have some crops already, that I use to help me afford the herbs I use as an herbalist when I need ones that I can't find on my own. And I own some chickens, so I do have a source of eggs. But I would be interested in growing a small vegetable garden so I could grow some of the food I eat. Having a cow might be a good idea too, since it would provide me with a ready supply of fresh milk, butter, and cheese."

"That's a good place to start. If you want a garden just big enough to fit one, I would suggest using plant boxes. We sell both large, and small ones. And a soil sifter would be useful to sift all of the rocks, and other debris out of your soil before you plant your garden. A watering can to water your garden with is a must. I also have a dairy cow that I could sell you. She has just been bred, so you will be able to get a decent amount of milk out of her for a good one hundred and eighty trials, or so. Pregnancy for cows lasts two hundred and seventy trials, and it is a good idea to let a milking cow rest for at least the last ninety trials before they give birth so the damage done to their udders as you milk them can be healed before they have to nurse their calves. Do you know what kinds of vegetables you want to grow?"

"Tomatoes, both normal ones, and cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and peas. Maybe more later once I get a feel for what I'm doing, but I would like to start with those. I think I would like three each of both kinds of tomatoes, the cucumbers, and the zucchini plants. And maybe two of the peas."

"I sell crops by the amount of seed it takes to seed a quarter acre of land, usually. But I also sell individual plants that are fully grown for one gold nel each. Oh, and it would be best to buy one plant box for each type of vegetable you want to buy. We sell both large ones, and small ones. The large ones would give you plenty of room to house two or three plants."

"How much would the rest of the stuff cost? The pregnant cow, the watering can, and the rest?"

The farmer gave her a price, reminding her that she was getting anything she decided to buy at half price since it was Traveler's Day. Tei'serin frowned pensively. The amount he had given her was less than what her guardian had told her to spend by a good amount.

"Is it too expensive? If you need to, we could haggle on the price a bit, but..."

Tei'serin shook her head.

"I need to spend more, not less." she said simply.

The man grinned.

"I can certainly help with that! So let's see now. You said that you live on a farm, and that you do grow some crops, right? I find that seed sowers, and horse drawn hoes will save you a lot of work out in the fields. Do you know what they are?"

Tei'serin shook her head.

"A seed sower is a device that will let you plant your seeds in a straight line. It makes for an easier time tending the field, and harvesting it when the time comes. A horse drawn hoe is a tool that can be pulled by a horse, obviously. It allows you to pull the weeds that grow between your rows of crops easily."

Both sounded like useful things to have; both for the crops her farm already supported, and if she ever decided to expand her farm. So she nodded, and asked the man how much they would cost her. They were within her budget, so she added them to what she was already buying. But she hesitated when she realized that she would have to find a way to get them home.

"I would like to buy them, but I don't know if I can. I did mention that I don't live here in Ne'haer, right?"

The farmer nodded.

"My farm is near Treth, which is a good two trial ride from here. How easy would it be to bring them back home with me? I only have the horse I rode here on to help me transport anything I buy back home."

"That could be a problem." the man said slowly.

"Dad!"

Tei'serin and the farmer both looked up to see a young girl racing towards them. The child stopped beside the man, and looked at Tei'serin curiously.

"Kaise! Is your gardening class over, then?"

Kaise nodded.

"Yes, Dad. Hey...is that Tei'serin?"

Tei'serin felt a chill run down her spine as the young girl examined her more closely.

"Tei'serin?" the man mused as he turned to Tei'serin with interest.

"Yeah, you know. The woman that weird man told us about last night! You are Tei'serin, right?"

Tei'serin nodded slowly, her unease deepening as she watched the farmer and his daughter warily. Weird man? Could it have been Thorin? It almost had to be under the circumstances. How else would Kaise and her father know her name? But...what did it mean? Was this some kind of test? And if it was...what was her guardian testing her on? If this was a test...had she been right about being watched as she made her way here? Was it someone who worked for Thorin keeping an eye on her to see if she did what she had been told to do? Or was she being paranoid, and this was all some weird case of mistaken identity? Somehow, she doubted the latter. How many people named Tei'serin lived around here? As far as she knew, her name wasn't an especially popular one.

"Yes, I am Tei'serin. How do you know who I am?"

"A man came by our farm just as we were closing up last night. He didn't introduce himself, but he did look somewhat familiar. I think he's bought things from us in the past. He told us that a girl would be coming by this trial to buy some things. She wouldn't be from around here, and if she bought anything that would be difficult to transport over any distance, to tell her...you, that everything would be taken care of. One of his men would bring anything you buy this trial out to your farm the next time he had business in the area."

Tei'serin fought to suppress the shudder of dread that thought brought. The man her guardian sent to bring her purchases to her farm was almost certainly going to want "payment" for doing so.

"That solves the problem of how I am supposed to bring this stuff back home." she said softly.

The farmer nodded.

"Oh, and there was one other thing. The man...I'm guessing that he is your guardian?"

Tei'serin nodded, but said nothing.

"You guardian left instructions with us that you were supposed to buy one specific thing. Kaise, will you go get it for me?"

The young girl nodded, and ran off. When she returned, it was with a branding iron. Innocent enough in itself; lots of livestock were branded, after all since it helped make it harder for the animals to be stolen. But the brand that this particular branding iron would create was the image of a lotus. It was a silent message, and very likely a warning of things to come. Perhaps it was a hint of the punishment that would await her if she failed the test that her guardian was giving her? A chill ran through Tei'serin's spine, making the flesh in the small of her back tingle. How old had she been when Thorin had branded her there? Five? Yes, it had to have been then. He had placed his claim on her the day he brought her out to the farm she lived on now. And that had been a few trials after her father had died. Were she to stand in front of a mirror, she would see the distinct shape of a lotus branded permanently into her flesh. Thorin's mark; his way of staking his claim on her despite not being able to enslave her legally.

"Are you okay? You look pale all of a sudden."

Tei'serin jumped as her eyes focused on the farmer and his daughter once more.

"Yes...I'm fine. The trip into the city must have tired me out more than I'd thought it had, that's all. How much do you want for the branding iron?"

The farmer didn't look convinced, and Tei'serin couldn't really blame him. Her voice had trembled as she had tried to reassure him. But after a trill, he visibly accepted her answer, and gave her a price. She had enough to cover the cost without having to rethink what she was buying; she had exactly that much left to spend here. Was it a coincidence? Or had Thorin somehow known what she was going to end up buying, even though he hadn't given her a list of things to buy?

Tei'serin handed the farmer the nels she needed to pay for what she wanted to buy. Then she hesitated, glancing at Kaise.

"The gardening class you're taking...is it a private lesson?" she asked softly.

Kaise shook her head.

"No. Dad offers gardening classes here. It's thirty gold nels for a beginner's class, and fifty for an intermediate one. But I get to take them for free, cause he's my dad. Why, are you interested in taking one? I think we have room in the beginner's class later this trial...?"

The farmer nodded.

"Yes, we do still have room in the class if you're interested. But since it's a class, and not an actual item, the cost of the class won't be reduced even though it's Traveler's Day." he cautioned.

Tei'serin gave it some thought. It would be interesting to take a class. And it would be much easier than trying to learn the basics from the books she owned since someone would be there to explain what she was doing wrong when she made mistakes. But she didn't know if she would have time to attend the class.

"I would like to take the class if I can. But I have more shopping to do, so I don't know if I will be able to make it. Could I just show up if I am able to come? I would pay for the class if I am able to attend, of course."

"That would be fine. If there's still room left in the class when you come by, then you're welcome to take it." the farmer said with a smile.

Her business at Valfield Farms was finished, so Tei'serin thanked the farmer, and promised that she would come to the gardening class if she could. Then she checked her list to see where she had to go next. Anuminah’s Stables and Mount Gear was the next merchant that Thorin wanted her to visit. Would he be known there, too? It seemed almost likely since he was here, and in Siason's Stichery. Remembering that Kaise's father had offered to help with directions earlier when he had thought that she was lost, Tei'serin asked him for directions to the stables. He was happy to help, and Tei'serin thanked him once more before leaving.

Market Day

As the followed the directions that the farmer had given her, Tei'serin felt as though she was being watched again. She noticed it the moment she left the farm, and no amount of weaving through the crowd to shake whoever was following her seemed to help. After a while, the feeling of being watched made her so nervous that she had to duck into the nearest shop to escape it. With any luck, she could hide in the shop long enough for whoever was following her to lose interest, and give up.

When she looked around, Tei'serin's eyes lit up with wonder. The shop she had ducked into was a book store. Shelves, and shelves filled with books greeted her, begging her to browse through them, and discover the secrets they held within. Tei'serin knew that she could quite happily spend the rest of the trial in this store alone, but the enjoyment to be gained from doing so wouldn't be worth bearing the brunt of Thorin's anger at daring to disobey him. But even that wasn't going to stop her from spending at least a little time browsing through the shelves. She might even buy a book or two since she had brought some of her own money as well as the nels that Thorin had given her to spend.

Knowing that she couldn't stay long if she wanted to have any hope of attending the gardening class later, Tei'serin skimmed through the shelves until she found the section on herbs. There was one thing in particular that she really hoped to find; an encyclopedia on herbs, and their uses. If she had had one before she had found herself in an icy wasteland trying to do what little she could to help the wounded during a war among the Immortals, she might have known a little about what, if any herbs might have been available to her there. And if she ever found herself traveling again, it would allow her to learn about the local herbs in the area. It could even help her find alternates to the herbs she already knew if her patient was allergic to one of the more common ones, or if she ran out of something she needed during a season when she couldn't readily get more. It might even be able to teach her how to make new herbal remedies that she didn't know how to make now.

Normally such a thing would have been well beyond what she could afford to buy...assuming she could even find one at all. A small community like Treth simply didn't offer such things. But a huge port city like Ne'haer could well have one available, and if so, Tei'serin planned to take full advantage of Traveler's Day to buy it. It took quite a bit of searching, but she did find exactly what she was looking for. Tei'serin still had some time left before she thought her stalker would give up, so she continued browsing, and found a book that focused on how to make a variety of herbal remedies. Since several of the remedies she used required cooking in some form or another, she decided to look for some books that would help her improve her cooking skills as well. She found a set of books that explained different cooking techniques, and tools, as well as offering a selection of recipes that featured each type. Further searching allowed her to add a book about the proper use of seasonings, and one on how to make jams, jellies, and syrups.

Tei'serin waited as long as she could, lingering over the shelves filled with books. When she had reached the point where she wouldn't be able to attend the gardening class later if she delayed any longer, she made her purchase. But as soon as she emerged from the store, Tei'serin knew that she had failed to shake off whoever was following her. She couldn't see anyone watching her, or acting strangely when she searched the crowd, but she could feel someone watching her all the same. It could be that she was just nervous about being around so many strangers...but she didn't think that that was the case.

Tei'serin did her best to ignore the feeling of being watched as she made her way through the crowd to Anuminah’s Stables and Mount Gear, using the directions the farmer had given her. The stables were located just outside the town gates. As Tei'serin entered the main gates into the stables, she took note of the large wooden animal statues that seemed to greet her as she walked past them. As soon as she did, the feeling of being watched stopped, making her wonder once again if Thorin had sent someone to check up on her, and make certain that she do as she had been told.

"Can I help you?"

Tei'serin looked up to see a woman walking up to her briskly. She thought quickly. What did she want to buy here? She had exactly ninty two gold nels, and five silver nels to spend here, according to her guardian's instructions. And with everything being half priced due to the holiday, that could buy a lot of stuff, depending on what she decided to buy. The woman was clearly expecting an answer to her question some time in the near future, so she had to say something...but what?

"I'm hoping to buy a horse. One that has been well trained." she said at last.

"And the gear I would need to ride one."

There. That was something, at least. And while she had a horse she liked well enough, the mare wasn't trained very well. Tei'serin could ride her, but the mare was prone to wanting to go where she wanted to go rather than where Tei'serin wanted to go. And she could be incredibly stubborn about it at times when the mood suited her. Having a well trained mare would make her life a lot easier.

"I may be able to help you with that. What kind of horse are you looking for?"

"A mare, if one is available. I've ridden one in the past, so it is what I am used to. But she isn't trained very well, and my own skills aren't...well, to put it nicely, I am an beginner. But I live on a farm that is a good couple of breaks away from the village I work in. Riding makes the trip shorter than walking."

"So you'd want a docile mare who isn't likely to give you any trouble, then?"

Tei'serin nodded.

"Do you have the proper housing for another horse? You mentioned having one already."

Tei'serin nodded again.

"I have a small stable for the one that I own now. It would be easy for me to hire someone who could add a second stall to the stable. And in the mean time, I have a barn she could stay in."

"You mentioned being used to riding mares. How do you handle their irritation when they are in heat?" the woman questioned.

Tei'serin smiled ruefully as she remembered some of her mare's more stubborn moments. She knew from experience that when a mare was in heat, you were the last thing on her mind. Obedience was a lot to be expected from a mare in heat, who was uncomfortable to begin with, and distracted by her instinct to mate. In some ways, it was similar to a woman who had to endure an especially bad cycle...at least the discomfort aspect was.

"With a great deal of love, and patience. And if need be, I will walk on a given day rather than ride if my mare is especially uncomfortable, or irritated with the idea of being ridden.

The woman chuckled, and Tei'serin got the feeling that she had passed some kind of test she hadn't known she was taking.

"Then yes, I do think I can help you. Sorry about the interrogation. I like to make sure that my horses are going to a good home before I sell them. My name is Anuminah, by the way."

"I'm Tei'serin. And I can understand you wanting to make sure they go to a good home." Tei'serin said simply.

Anuminah led Tei'serin to a large pasture where several mares were grazing. Some of them were obviously pregnant. Although Tei'serin had never bred her own mare before, she remembered reading that a mare didn't show until late in their pregnancy. So if she was right in what she remembered, these mares were due to give birth soon. One of the mares, a pretty, spirited looking thing, perked her ears up, and approached the white fence surrounding the pasture as they walked up. It was clear that she was looking for treats, and Tei'serin laughed at her antics.

"This little sweetheart will do anything for you...if she likes you. But if not, she's a stubborn bitch, and may well take it into her head to bite you." Anuminah said as she offered the dainty mare a carrot.

Once the mare had taken her carrot, she turned to Tei'serin in a clear demand for attention. Tei'serin smiled as she stroked the mare's nose gently, and told her how beautiful she was.
The woman turned to Tei'serin thoughtfully.

"I would say that she was too much of a handful for a beginner like you...except that she seems to have taken a real liking to you. That's a good sign. She doesn't usually take to strangers so quickly. What do you think?"

Tei'serin knew that she should at least take a closer look at the other horses that were for sale to see if she found one that she liked better...but she had fallen in love with the sweet, affectionate nature of the mare she was petting, and she told Anuminah as much. The woman chuckled.

"Then it seems that we've found you a horse. Since she is trained, and pregnant, I would normally charge one hundred and twenty gold nels for her. But what with the holiday, and all, she's yours for sixty gold nels."

"Sold." Tei'serin said instantly.

"That just leaves the tack I will need for her."

"All told, I can give you a saddle, halter, bit, and leather reins for twenty one gold nels, and five silver nels."

Tei'serin nodded, and agreed on the price. It fell a little short of the amount her guardian had told her to spend here, though, so she tried to think of what else she might need.

"Do you have any grooming brushes, and the like?" she asked hopefully.

"I'm afraid not. You'll have to go to Zuroni's Animal Care and and Training Sanctuary for those." she said apologetically.

"But we do sell saddle bags here. I could sell you a large one for six gold nels, or a small one for three including the holiday discount. We also sell saddle blankets. Large ones will go for seven gold nels, and five silver, and small ones for five gold nels with the discount." she offered.

"I'll take a small saddle blanket, and a large saddle bag, then."

The saddle bag would come in handy when she needed to go farther than usual to find the herbs she needed, and the mare looked small enough that a small blanket would suit her more than a large one would. Tei'serin thanked the woman for her help as she handed her the money she owed. The woman then gathered the items she had purchased, along with the mare, and promised they would be waiting for her when she was ready for them. Tei'serin asked if she could take the mare with her now, and leave the riding gear until she was ready to leave the city. She was hoping that Zuroni's Animal Care and and Training Sanctuary would sell horseshoes as well, and for that, she would need the mare she had just bought. Finally, she asked for directions to get the animal sanctuary, thanked the woman once more for her help, and left.

Zuroni's Animal Care and and Training Sanctuary was located outside the city gates as well; just before the edge of Willow Woods. As she entered the Sanctuary, she was greeted at the entrance by a black haired Biqaj who introduced himself gruffly as Zuroni, and asked her what she wanted. Tei'serin was more than a little unnerved by the unfriendly greeting, but she still managed to tell the man that Anuminah had sent her, saying that she would be able to find grooming brushes for the horse she had just bought here.

Well, at least whoever is watching me didn't follow me inside... she thought nervously.

Zuroni admitted that he did sell grooming brushes for a number of different animals at the sanctuary, and demanded to know exactly what she was looking for. He was less than impressed when Tei'serin had to explain that she didn't know what kinds of brushes she needed, but he did tell her the names of the different kinds he sold, and explained what each one was used for. He also told her that it was best to get her horse shooed if she hadn't already, and offered to do it for her if she bought the horse shoes from him. Then he suggested that she buy a sponge, and a hoof pick as well when she told him that she wanted to buy one of each of the brushes that he had available. Zuroni asked if she had all of the tack she needed. Tei'serin was about to say yes, when she realized that Anuminah didn't have any bridles for sale. When Zuroni offered to sell her a leather one, Tei'serin agreed quickly, and thanked him. He ignored her thanks, and told her how much her purchase would come to.

Once she had handed him the money he had asked for, Zuroni took her mare aside, so he could put the horseshoes on. Tei'serin watched in fascination as he gently lifted the mare's right fore hoof. When he noticed her interest, he began explaining what he was doing as he worked. As he cleaned the hoof with a hoof pick, Tei'serin watched closely, knowing that she would have to be able to clean the mare's hooves herself from now on. She knew the basics, of course, having learned how to take care of her other mare long ago. But she knew that she barely knew what she was doing, going on lessons she had been given as a child. The opportunity to watch someone who clearly was confident in what they were doing helped a lot, and Tei'serin found herself learning a few tricks that would help her in the future. When he told her that the triangular portion in the middle of the hoof was called the frog, and cautioned her to be especially careful of it since it was very sensitive, Tei'serin nodded. She didn't know what it was called before Zuroni had told her, having forgotten the name if she had ever learned it before. But she had learned from past experience with her other mare that that part of the hoof was very sensitive.

When Zuroni began to remove excess flaky sole from the mare's hooves using a hoof knife, Tei'serin asked if he had any that he could sell her. He did, and he paused in his work to accept another two gold nels from her in payment. An additional six gold nels was added to the price when he began using a pair of hoof nippers to trim her hooves, and Tei'serin asked about buying a pair of those as well. As he worked, he told her that it was important to keep the edges of the hooves uniformly straight and level so that they would sit flush with the ground unless the horse's gait was uneven. If that was the case, she would want to trim slightly less off of the hoof on the side that the horse favors. But he cautioned her that if she had any uncertainty as to which side the horse favored, it was best to leave trimming the horses hooves to a skilled farrier. He also taught her that each side of the hoof should be trimmed from the heel to the toe, pointing each out as he explained the process. Then he warned her not to cut into the sole of the hoof with the nippers because doing so would injure the horse.

Finally, he used a rasp to flatten, and level the sole of each hoof, explaining what he was doing as he did so. Tei'serin took note of the gentle side to side motion that he used to smooth away any uneven spots on the hoof. Then Zuroni used his knife to bevel the sole away from the hoof wall slightly, explaining that if the sole of the hoof came into contact with the shoe, it could cause the horse discomfort. The cost of a hoof rasp was also added to what Tei'serin was buying.

Zuroni showed Tei'serin how to measure a horse's hoof, explaining that every horse's hooves were shaped differently. He also told her that it was important that the shoes fit the horse properly, and that if she ever had to choose between shoes that were slightly too big, or ones that were a bit too small, to take the bigger ones since they could be shaped to the proper size. As he began to nail the horse shoes into place, she asked anxiously if the nails would hurt the mare. Zuroni's expression softened, as though her obvious worry about the mare had given her a better opinion of her. Then he explained that while the frog of a horse's hoof was very sensitive, the rest was made out of dead tissue, much like a person's fingernails were. And as such, the horse felt no pain when the shoe was nailed on unless the nail was placed improperly.

When he was done fastening the horse shoes with nails, Zuroni showed her how to bend the nail tips that protruded from the hoof against the hoof wall, and clip them off with the hoof nippers. Then he clinched each of the nails by hitting each one once firmly with the hammer. Finally, he used his rasp to file away some rough spots on the outer hoof walls. One of the rear hooves had a bit of excess hoof protruding over the shoe, so he used his nippers to remove it.

When he was finished, Tei'serin thanked him sincerely for shooing her mare as she handed him the additional nels she owed. The sun was still high in the sky, and Tei'serin judged that it was still early enough that she had a chance of making it to the gardening class she hoped to take. So she left the sanctuary, and headed back towards Valfield Farms.
