96th Ashan, 717

A few moments ago, Celeste had been on the sofa in the living room of the family wing, held in Xander's arms and kissing him without thought or concern. His whispered apology had been met with a shake of her head and Celeste had reached up to put his hair straight. "No apologies, my pup. Not between us." Her hand was shaking, she had noticed as she did that, but then she straightened her clothing, tucking her skirt back into her blouse where it had pulled up and patting her hair back into place.

Now, they were sitting in the meeting room, still in the Family Wing of her estate. The table in the room was large enough for eight to sit around it comfortably, there was a drinks cabinet and a door to her small office in the Family Wing. There were not eight people, however, there was her, Xander and a blonde haired woman who was exquisitely beautiful. It had been her who knocked the door and had introduced herself as Lin Scotfill, Celeste's "Personal Assistant" and one of her five advisors. The others would be coming in a brief while, Lin said, but she would like to speak to the Baroness first.

Celeste had nodded and said that they would be in momentarily. Then, she had taken Xander's arm and smiled at him. "Thank you. I was not trained for this, as the youngest child of four. Mostly, it was my job to be beautiful and manipulate my husband." It was true, she considered with a smile and then had shown him the way to the meeting room. Lin had hidden her surprise at Xander accompanying Celeste well, but Celeste had spoken clearly when she introduced them.

"Lord Krome, this is Lin Scotfill, my assistant and advisor. Lin, Lord Krome and I are to be married and we have every intention of it being a genuine union of two people. I have no secrets from him." Lin nodded her head in understanding.
"My Baroness, as you say. Lord Krome, it is a pleasure to meet you." Lin's curtsy was impeccable, and she moved to pour the three of them drinks. "That being the case, Baroness Andaris, I will be frank. I am a reasonably good personal assistant in terms of organising. I can do it and do it well enough to function. However, my actual role is your personal bodyguard. My true talent is in combat and your defence."

With a glance at Xander, Celeste raised an eyebrow. The woman did not seem to be a fighter and Lin smiled. "My role as your assistant which I suggest we double up with the role of lady's maid means that I will be with you a lot. It also means that people tend to overlook me. I will die to defend you if I have to, I would ask only that you do not put yourself in a position of forcing me to." Turning to Xander, Lin spoke to him. "It would benefit my role, Lord Krome, if you would remain protective and vigilant around her. There may be situations where you act and I do not. This is because I must judge whether it is worth my cover being blown for a threat. Therefore, I suggest you have other security and consider me your last line."

Celeste looked rather surprised at the turn of events, but she couldn't really see anything but sense in what the blonde woman suggested. "That sounds sensible," she said to Xander, looking at him with a raised eyebrow.

"So, as your personal assistant, there are four people to meet. Mistress of the Nursery, who deals with public relations, Head of Staff, Chief of Security and Master of Coins. I suggest that you meet them individually at first, tonight and discuss their roles in your new position?"

It was a lot to take in all at once and Celeste nodded. "That's fine. Would you give Lord Krome and I a few minutes alone, please and then bring in the Mistress of the Nursery?" Lin nodded her head and left the room.

Once the door was closed, Celeste reached her hand out for Xander's. "What do you think? If we accept her role in that way, then she will be in our lives a lot. Conversely, I will get stabbed less." Glancing around the comfortable but not over the top room, Celeste breathed out a little. "We can do this, Xander. We can." She sounded like the was more or less trying to persuade them both.

They were preparing to meet Celeste's advisory, those who would guide her in leading Astedia. He was sure they were the best of the best and yet still he worried about them, they were not hand picked by him, not trusted people he had known for a long time. Then again they were likely long time friends and allies of house Andaris and for what Celeste needed them for, perhaps it was not so important. Still, if he were to ever trust them it would take time, he would need to get used to their presence and likely question all their decisions at the very least inwardly. He may even express his concerns verbally to Celeste if he truly believed them to be an issue or of vital importance.

"Well, you most certainly are beautiful my Baroness and you could likely manipulate me with ease." He smiled playfully, trying to keep a relaxed air about everything. They did need to be professional but Xander could sense Celeste's nervousness, her fear of messing up. "Do not worry yourself Celeste. I am sure you will do fine and with your advisors help you will succeed, I will help where I can too." He believed in her, she was a talented politician and her skills were greater than maybe she realised. He was sure she would do well and with his own assistance he had no doubt they would succeed together.

He followed her into the meeting room, a large room with a table with space to sit eight. It was a nice room and not too over the top, comfortable and yet professional. It was the perfect place to discuss the politics at hand and it could also likely act as a room for entertaining guests if they needed one. He nodded his head politely in greeting to Celeste's new "personal assistant" or as it turned out, last line of defence against any attackers. It seemed like a sensible method of protection and keeping her skills a secret seemed too like a intelligent move, not revealing it unless completely necessary was a good move.

He of course already knew he would need to protect her, it was his duty as her lover and one day husband. He had no issue with taking on that responsibility in order to make her job easier too. Celeste's safety and protection was one of the most important things to him at this point, his love had made him worry for her greatly. He had no doubt within him now that if she were to be hurt or even killed he would blame himself more than he already did for the times she had been harmed already. No, it would be safer for her now, both due to his own skill and practise and the amount of protection available to her.

"The safer you are, the happier I am Celeste. I can cope with the intrusion as long as you are safe and happy, I am sure we will still find time to ourselves when we truly want it." He smiled and placed his hand in hers as they awaited the next advisor. As for her comment on them being able to do it, he had never really doubted her ability. "I know we can, together we can most anything we wish. Together we make quite the impressive pair, powerful and skilled and we both mean well." He squeezed her hand and looked towards the door, ready to see the next member of Celeste's new household.

When Xander took her hand in his and said that it would be fine, that they could do this together Celeste smiled and shook her head. "I continue to be amazed by you. But you are right, together we can do whatever we put our minds to." Glancing around, she nodded. "Ala'ni can be happy here, I'm sure. I will need to speak to them about her, get her a good education and see to her needs." Celeste was, there was no doubt, fiercely protective of the little girl in question, who had been carried up to bed, fast asleep.

A few moments later, though, there was a tap on the door and Lin brought in another woman, this one with dark hair and green eyes. Lin then stood back and let them to it, but she was there in the background. "Baroness Andaris, Lord Krome," the dark haired woman spoke with a soft voice, yet it had that air to it which meant that there was no doubt she could raise it and sharply. Like, Celeste thought, a teacher of children. "My name is Louise Bellingham and I have the pleasure of being Mistress of the Nursery here. It is my job to make sure that all the children of Andaris have a happy life, especially yours." She nodded to the two of them.

They might notice that Louise spoke to them both, not just Celeste. "I oversee and advise on education and the children in the estate, but my main role is to advise you in how best to be act in order to ensure positive perception. Be that the careful handling of a scandal or the volunteering of your time to the sick of Krome." Celeste raised an eyebrow and glanced at Xander. Had he given them information on her?
"It is my job, Baroness, to know about you. I am looking forward to meeting your daughter and we will need to discuss her. But in the meantime, we have to consider public image."

Celeste nodded, thoughtfully. "A family. I would like the people of Astedia, Andaris and Rynmere to have the word 'family' as their first thought for us."
"You do not need me to tell you how to pretend to be in love, evidently there is no pretense needed."
Celeste looked at Louise and raised an eyebrow, "I suppose it is also your job to be perceptive. A family, yes, and a loving one. I want our people to know that we care for them and when I say our people, I mean the people of Andaris and Krome."
Louise nodded, "It is my job to consider Andaris, Baroness."
"No." Celeste raised her chin and locked gazes with the brown-haired woman, "It is your job to advise me on matters I seek your advice on. I am telling you what the boundaries of that are, I trust that will not be a problem?"

The smile on Louise's face told that she was pleased with that answer. The new Baroness had a backbone. "As you say, Baroness Andaris. I am not as familiar with Krome as I will need to be, so I would beg the indulgence of time. However, a strong family and a generosity of spirit from that family is something which both Duchies are likely to respond to." She looked between the two of them and then pointed out the downside to that. "It will also make some believe you are vulnerable, weak even. It would be appropriate for you to consider what you wish to gain and achieve in this Barony"

That was an easy one for Celeste and she nodded. "I want this Barony to flourish. It's people to be happy and to bring revenue and prestige into the duchy. One trial, I will be Duchess and I have every intention of doing both successfully." Her hand reached for Xander's and she smiled slightly. "If people think that a united family is a weakness, that is an advantage to us, for they underestimate us. Let them do so. I will not hesitate to do what is best for my family, for our people."

Louise nodded and turned to Xander. "And what of you, Lord Krome? What are your thoughts on this? When you are wed you will be Baron of Astedia and, eventually, Duke of Andaris."

When he had answered, Louise turned to them both. "Your letter to the King was a daring move. Do you maintain that course?" Celeste nodded her head, firmly. She most certainly did, and she looked to Xander to see if he felt the same.

"I understand that it is a dangerous move," Celeste explained. "But it is both what I feel is right and it is a clear statement. I trust that you will be able to use it to the maximum?" Louise nodded her head, she certainly would. Then, however, she asked a question which Celeste had simply not considered.
"And what would you do were he to write back and insist that you hold a traditional wedding in the manner befitting your station?"

It did not come as much of a surprise to Xander that this Louise Bellingham had heard of their actions in Krome. Such things did not go unnoticed in Rynmere, in fact much to the contrary. An important noble first born Lord and Lady together tending to the sick in Krome, it was likely front page news in Andaris. So although Celeste seemed surprised and somewhat confused that it was known he did not feel the same. For Xander he was actually impressed that the advisors were doing what they were supposed too and had in fact prepared for the pairs arrival. Perhaps he had judged these people too quickly, maybe they could be good at their jobs and would be valuable to himself as well as Celeste.

Xander had expected her to be a strong leader, to be assertive and to express her desires. Yet, he had not necessarily expected to see it within the first trial. She instructed and spoke her mind to the new advisor, telling her what she would do and not allowing for argument. It was always good to be assertive as a leader and Xander knew that from working as Steward of his house for so long. He listened closely to all of Celeste's plans and wishes, her understanding of what her public image meant and needed to be. Xander personally would have rather seemed strong but then again he was not the true leader of this Barony and kept his thoughts to himself.

He kept them to himself until they were requested that was, he thought about expressing them fully and openly but he did not believe it best instead he expressed his opinion more diplomatically. "I understand the need to appear a happy family, the necessity behind the wishes to see Astedia prosper and feel our love but it is clear Celeste that you are the target of many. You are to become one of the most powerful women in Rynmere, be careful how delicately you present yourself to the public. If you appear like a soft target you only invite more attacks upon you and you must be wary that it will take some time to make the people love you, our class is more hated these days." Xander finished there and allowed them to continue, he was to step carefully with his ideals.

Xander nodded in reassurance that he too believed it was the desired course of action for the two to take with the wedding. He would not change it even if he did not believe it a necessary event to take place and in such a manner. Xander was unable to stay his tongue though as she asked what they would do if the king responded in such a way. "I would tell him to go sit back in his high chair and finish his breakfast." Xander felt a twinge in his lip as he held back a smirk, he had no idea why he had expressed that so openly. "He is the king but he cannot tell us how we will marry, that is not within his power. We are fulfilling all the necessary traditions, in Saun, by water, many guests and there will be food. There is nothing else that is forced upon us or can be."

He watched to gauge the response of his two companions, first Celeste and then the Mistress of the Nursery. He was not going to compromise his views and beliefs for the boy king. No, he would rather fight off the guards sent to arrest him for treason than let that murderous child rule his life.

Louise nodded her head at Xander's assessment of Celeste's desire to appear as a family and his warning that she was a target. Celeste listened to them both and considered it. "I understand, I understand that point of view but it is not quite what I mean." Sitting back in her chair, Celeste looked at the two of them, a determined look on her face. "I will not appear weak, because I am not. Our people have had too much of aloof nobles, or nobles who pretend not to be, yet still keep the name and attend the parties. I will be different." She smiled at Xander then, a slight smile but a hint of mischief gleamed in her brown eyes despite the serious message she was giving. "I will be fierce and protective and determined for my family and the people whose care I am entrusted with." Louise raised an eyebrow and considered it. It could work, but it would be difficult, hard work Louise said.

Celeste nodded. "I want my people to know that I am making a difference to them because I am. This is a duty, not a game and currently we have two types of nobles, the leech and the hypocrite. I will not be either of those." Celeste smiled at Louise who, it must be said, was rather surprised at the strength of determination Celeste had. "Fundamentally, Louise," Celeste's gaze was one which Xander would recognise, "if you aren't working harder than you've ever worked, then you are not doing your job as I want you to." Louise made some notes as they spoke, but at that last she raised an eyebrow a small amount. "I will be doing the same, but you will make me more effective. I am quite sure that we can do this."

When Louise asked about their wedding, though, Xander's response prompted a smile from Celeste and a nod. "Lord Krome and I are in absolute agreement there. We will follow all the sacred traditions and do so in what I believe is the spirit of the Sacred Seven." Louise nodded her head, her own expression carefully neutral.
"I will get started on this, my Lady. Shall I send in your Chief of Staff?" Louise asked and Celeste nodded her head. "Thank you, Louise. I apologise for the work I am giving you."
Louise smiled at Celeste's words. "I love my job, Baroness Andaris. It is incredibly interesting and I look forward to working with you. With both your leave." She curtsied to them both and left.

Which gave them just a few moments where it was just them and the ever-present but silent Lin. Celeste took Xander's hand and smiled at him. As her fingers entwined with his she spoke to him, softly. "I'll take every precaution, I promise you. I will be well guarded and ensure that I learn to defend myself too." Her voice was just above a whisper and her gaze was on only him. "The moment that I find out I am pregnant, I will behave very differently, I promise you. It is why I have to start now and work hard." There were many things Celeste would do differently once they were wed and once they had children, she did not doubt.

The man who came in, with white hair and an impeccable suit appeared to be, to all intents and purposes, a fop. The very epitome of soft southern gentleman and he bowed. "Baroness Andaris, Lord Krome. I am Phillipe vonFranc. I oversee all staff in this estate." Celeste smiled and urged him to continue.

"I have two roles, Baroness Andaris. One is to ensure that your estate runs like a well oiled machine. If you have a need and it is not being fulfilled, speak to me. The other is to ensure that you are kept fully informed at all times of important information, from your household, the Barony, the Duchy and beyond." Celeste looked at him and raised an eyebrow. This was an intelligence advisor? Surely not, she considered and she looked, for a brief moment, disbelieving.

"I understand your reaction. I would say that it makes me perfectly placed, wouldn't you? There are two types of nobles, Baroness. Not the two you referenced earlier, but those who wish to leave the running to me, as most are. There are those who wish to ensure that they oversee their house and all within it. As you are, Lord Krome." Celeste had to admit, she found him rather unnerving. How did he know both what she had said earlier and what Xander did?

"Which would you like to be, Baroness Andaris, and until you are wed, and after, what role would you like Lord Krome to play? For both my roles, of course." Celeste turned her gaze to Xander and she looked at him. "The question is a good one, but it is the wrong one, Phillipe." Her voice was quiet but quite sure. "What role would you like to play in this aspect, Lord Krome? In both of Phillipe's aspect of work, as he said." The overseeing of staff was something that Xander was used to and if Louise was going to be taking a lot of her time, then was it possible that Xander would or could work with Phillipe? Celeste didn't know, but she also did not ask. This was up to him, she was quite sure of that.

Xander kept listening to the two discuss his comments, allowing himself to take in each word and consider it. Perhaps he struggled to believe Celeste could be such a dangerous leader to those who would see her dead. Fierce, protective and determined were certainly words he would use to describe her but whether she could be so fiercely determined to learn to fight off an attacker, that remained to be seen. As for showing her people she was making a difference, that too would remain to be seen. Celeste wanted to do good but who knew if she could achieve it, Xander had high hopes but it was not set in stone and things could certainly go wrong. In fact things often would go wrong but he could really hope that Celeste would keep things straight and do good by her people.

Celeste seemed happy wit his response, even if it was a rather brave thing to say so openly. To admit to being open to oppose the king and defy his wishes was a somewhat rebellious and possibly treasonous act. Still Xander, with the clear support of Celeste stood by his words, he would not be pushed down and forced to act one way by a King who was not his. Cassander was not his King, no Cassander was just a child sitting a throne he did not deserve. Although, Xander did not know who the throne truly belonged too and he did not overly care. No he was a man who wanted to create something apart from Rynmere, the kingdom was crumbling and he was campaigning for an out.

Still, with recent events things had been getting a little different, his emotions had been switched back on and his decisions were beginning to be influenced by the idea of a family he would love. Not to mention the fact he would soon find himself being an Andaris rather than Krome, a dilemma he could not have foreseen.

The advisor left them and as they waited for the next of the five to show their face Celeste again took his hand. Her slender fingers were comforting in his own hands. "The moment you find out you are pregnant we will lock you in the basement. You are too god at getting attacked my Lady and I will make every precaution to stop that." He winked at her and kissed her forehead, realising how close they had grown already. He felt vulnerable and weak around her but he knew in truth she likely made him stronger, she gave him something to fight for. "I only jest of course, however, the day we do find out I will press you to allow me to take your place in many more dangerous events. I do not wish to take away from your freedom but I fear everyday you may be attacked once again."

He turned to face the door again as a new face entered, a rather feminine looking man in Xander's eyes. Pampered and clearly of a Southern life, never would a man like that have been product of the North. He listened and was not expecting to be asked to make a decision on whether he would take part in such covert operations for the Barony. In truth he was after all an outsider, a man who knew little of all of Andaris. "Perhaps, I would be useful to take on the role of steward here. I was the Steward of The Northern Krome House and have experience in it. I see a benefit of taking that extra role off your hands and allowing you more time to focus on keeping an ear to the ground. After all, you will be the one I hope to pick up on any rumour that might represent a threat to our Baroness." Xander did have some interest in what it was Phillipe could really discover. He had some experience in intelligence too but not enough to offer to really help Phillipe, he may from time to time do some research and listening of his own but he would leave most to this man.

"If you deem that an okay suggestion Phillipe and of course you, Celeste? Then I would take the role of Steward and reduce some of Phillipe's less important work and help him to keep you safe and tabs on those who we may need in the future to deal with." Xander was prepared to let this be the end of it unless there were more questions on his exact role.

When Xander suggested that he would lock her in a basement, Celeste raised an eyebrow and her smile was gentle and amused. "My Lord, I am afraid that I must insist on a tower. We must adhere to tradition in all things, must we not?" The kiss he placed on her forehead was met with a serious gaze from her and he spoke of how he would be when they did find out that they were expecting a child. How he was now, also, and Celeste wondered again at the twists and turns of events which had led them here. "I am going to learn to defend myself, Xander. I promise you, I will." There was a simple truth to why. "I have so much to live for, after all."

Phillipe, though was absolutely the very epitome of the Southern gentry and Celeste knew that Xander was likely to absolutely hate him, in principle. But in practice, he would be open to work with him, Celeste knew. Although, it had to be said that she was rather surprised at just how much he was open to working with him when Xander offered to take on the role of Steward. Celeste looked to her fiance with gratitude in her eyes. "My Lord, if you would do that it would be most welcome."

Phillipe, it must be said, looked a little surprised. But then, he had heard that these pair were determined and prone to action so he smiled and bowed to Xander. "It will be a pleasure to work with you Lord Krome. I will compile a report of my role, and we can discuss at our next meeting?"

When they had agreed, he took his leave as this meant that things changed slightly, so he needed to ensure that he was giving Xander all the information he needed. They had no time, however, to talk as a tall mixed race man came in as Phillipe walked out.

"My Baroness, Lord Krome. I am Tam Bitha, your Head of Security. I have been asked to pass on the financial statements to you," which he did in that moment, "and William has suggested that you may wish to peruse these before meeting him, so that you are informed and he does not waste your time."

Money. William was the Master of Coin and Celeste knew that she would have to get used to it so she nodded. "Very well. Thank you, Tam. It is good to meet you." The man in front of them sat down at Celeste's behest and spoke of the military and security matters. He was concerned with security for her, he said, her family, the estate and the barony. His remit was broad but he worked efficiently and hoped to continue to do so. He was an intense chap, obviously passionate about his job and he looked at Celeste when he spoke of her security rather like a teacher might look to a naughty child.

"I have one request of you. I will have personal security assigned to you and there will be guards with you." Evidently, that was not the request, Tam spoke that like it was happening whether she wanted it or not. "If something occurs which means they have to act, please do as they say. Do not question them, do as they say. Later, we can run through it and dissect it, change processes, but they have clear process and good training. Will you agree to that?"

Celeste sat back in her chair and looked at him, this man whose job it was to keep her alive and she considered it for a short time. It was a genuine consideration to her and then she looked at Tam and replied. "I agree on certain conditions." The muscle in Tam's cheek started to twitch but he waited to hear. He thought she was going to be putting some foolish conditions, she knew. Celeste spoke softly, but she was determined. "I have no wish to find out what your processes are after the fact. I am going to learn self defense, including how to conceal weapons on my person and use them. However, if a situation happens there will be more than your men reacting. There will be myself and Xander, also. So it makes sense that we train together, run through scenarios, that kind of thing."

It had to be said, Tam looked somewhat surprised, although he hid it quickly. "That is very sensible Baroness Andaris. We can arrange for that and it would be my pleasure." It was a good idea and he seemed pleased with it. When Celeste continued, however, he looked more than a little surprised and he hid it far less well.

"Good. I also want to make sure that we are working the most efficiently we can. I will arrange for a series of mock-attacks to come. Lord Krome, would you and Phillipe be able to arrange that so that we can identify our weakest areas and begin to rectify them? We can then move on to an estate level and then Barony." Depending on what Xander said to that, of course, Tam would respond but, it had to be said, when he left he did so with a smile and a look of pleasure and slight confusion on his face.

Lin, who had been there for every moment, smiled once Tam had gone. "Would you like to have some food brought here? You must both be tired and hungry." Celeste looked to Xander to see what he would prefer, but either way, she was pleased with how her first meeting with four out of the five had gone. The money man she would see when they had been able to look over the numbers and identify the areas which needed discussion.

Everything seemed to be going well with the advisors, Xander was still not completely convinced he could trust them but they had proven that they at least knew what they were talking about. He had now gained himself a job too, something to occupy himself with while down south. Having lost the position of Steward in Krome, as he was living here currently, he was glad to hear he could take up the same position here. He was experienced in the work and so he would slide quite easily into the position, doing his part on the estate and avoiding boredom. "If you would Phillipe that would be useful." Xander smiled and nodded allowing the man to take his leave.

Xander allowed Celeste to deal with the security officer and as no questions were directed at him he was happy to remain quiet. Simply listening and allowing Celeste to give her own suggestions about them all training together to create a more effective defence and keep them all from harm. He was happy to train with others, if it meant Celeste would be safe he would do anything. Once they were wed and had a child on the way her safety would be incredibly important. So he was happy to take part in the exercises, he was also happy to organise with Phillipe some practise attacks, although, he was not sure he would play a huge role in that. He would help if it was requested though.

"Certainly, Phillipe I am sure will be more than able to plan some practise attacks and I will help him if need be. I say him as it will not be beneficial to me if I know when they will occur." He said nothing else then until Lin asked whether they would want food to be brought to them but Xander was not hungry. Instead he wished to explore the vast estate and see what he could find on his own.

He smiled and stood. "No thank you Lin, not for me. I think I shall take some time to explore the place if you will both excuse me." Xander took Celeste by the hand. "I will see you later my Lady, I need some time to think and explore if you don't mind of course?" This was his last check before he would take his leave. Xander kissed Celeste's hand and then assuming he was allowed to leave would exit out and begin to explore the new home.
