Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Seasons of Change

98 Ashan 717

Everything had changed this season. What she had once considered as set in stone had become as fluid as the waves on the shore. She thought she'd still be in Rynmere - and now she was in Viden. She thought she'd have reconnected with Narav again - instead, she was the one who had left. She thought that it would just be her and Aeodan, like always - and now Duncan was a part of her beloved family. But perhaps most importantly, she thought she would be unnoticed as always - and now Ralaith had seen fit to bless her with his marking of time.

That, more than anything, had galvanised Edalene into action. Her focus in Andaris had been on the history of the Seven Houses, and though there were texts on Rynmerian history here in Viden, what purpose did that serve her? She had been reluctant to come to Viden; it was a big change, from everything she had known to something strange and alien. By moving here, she had thought she was giving up everything. Instead, she had gained the world.

And with Ralaith's blessing, that ever-ticking clock on the back of her neck, her constant awareness of the hour and the time, she had been given a new purpose. Well, Ti'atha had helped. A whole field of history had opened itself up to her that she had never even considered. Something she considered too far off to even bother working with. She had previously considered Aeodan’s focus on the Joukardi to be esoteric (privately, of course – she would never distrust anything her brother did), but her new field of research would be even farther removed.

Pre-Shattering Idalos.

It was her reading that textbook with the Mortalborn that had ignited her new passion. Even now, as Edalene sat in the Caesious Wing in one of the staffrooms, she could feel Ti’atha’s presence, a warm boon in the back of her mind. Somewhere, wherever she was, the Mortalborn was joyful – it kept her warm in the cold Viden weather. Shaking her head of the distractions, Edalene turned herself back to the texts she was working with.

Spread out before her were several textbooks, messily scattered all over the desk. She had pieces of parchment around her, most with illegible scribblings, but she had one piece before her that focused exclusively on making neat and precise notes. One of the things she found she loved more about the Viden Academy is they gave her more freedom to work on her own interests, rather than on whatever was given her – hungry as they were for knowledge.

The textbooks in front of her were many, but she mainly referred to two main ones. When thinking about how to go about researching this, she had found it would be easier to begin with the Shattering, and move backwards as research became more and more vague and esoteric. And so her research would actually begin in the moments before the Shattering.

She wondered briefly if she should call upon Ti’atha for assistance, but she was only to contact her in moments of the direst need. This would fall to her, then. She reached for the closest textbook, a thick and dusty tome she had found from the depths of the Prime Athenum, titled The Emergence of the Originals.

From what Edalene had found, she could tell the following, scribbled on a piece of paper in her messy handwriting. She wrote these pieces of central knowledge so that she could keep them in mind as she continued to work on her research. They read the following:
  • There are records of the Induk Idalos, but it remains a creation myth for some, and a legend for most.
  • The Dragons are recognised to have existed, but very little beyond the basics is known about them.
  • The Shay are known as the first civilisation, who easily accepted others as their gods. This included the Induk, the Dragons, and finally, the Immortals.
  • After the war between the Dragons, the Induk, and the Originals, the Shay continued to live beneath the Originals.
  • When the Shattering happened, the Shay died.
Eda sat back and pondered the list before her, thinking. There were so many mysteries for this time of the world, but Ralaith had bestowed his gift upon her when she was researching this time of history. She could not help but feel as if it were her duty to solve this mystery – however long it took. After all, to a Shirvain, what did the passage of time mean?

The first thing, she thought, that she needed to work on was the last. The Shay dying. It was well-established in history that the Shay did exist – they were considered the first settlements, the first beings that lived individually to the gods, the dragons, and the Induk. So that was not the mystery she had to solve. The first thing was why they died.

Reaching forward, Edalene pulled the textbook closer to her. Pushing away a piece of hair that dangled in front of her, she absentmindedly smudged a stripe of ink across her cheek. She would not notice until Duncan later that evening, pointed it out, laughing. Flipping through the pages, she came to the last chapter, titled “The End of the Originals.”

Edalene skimmed the chapter, much of this familiar to her. She was not researching to learn new things, so much as to refresh herself on knowledge so she could fill in the blanks. She came to the end of the chapter, making notes as she went.

Hmm. It seemed that the author themselves was confused about the disappeareance of the Shay. Edalene sat back and read aloud as she did so, finding it helped her process the knowledge before her.

”While there are still many theories as to why and how the Originals shattered, it cannot be argued that they did in fact do so. Historians can debate all day, but until we are able to travel back in time, we will not know for certain.” Edalene chuckled, her mark itching on the back of her neck. Travel back in time, indeed. She continued to read.

”What is known, however, is that once the Originals shattered, the Shay were instantly wiped out. It is said to have happened instantaneously. The Shay have left archaeological records behind that seem to indicate there was no forewarning for their death, as there are no archaeological indications of panic, of refugees, or of any war outside of that between the Originals and the Dragons. Similarly to the Originals, it is not known why, or how the Shay died, simply that they did.”

Unfortunately, the chapter ended there.

Edalene stood up and began to pace around the staffroom. She was alone, and so she could do so, though with her hair all frazzled and her cheeks stained with ink, she looked more than a little mad. But the problem was frustrating her, and so she spoke to herself as she worked through the problem before her.

”Okay. So. The Originals died because they had spread themselves too thin. Or at least that’s one theory, but the most common, so let’s go with that for now. Stay small, Eda, stay small – we have a long way to go.” She took a deep breath, recentered herself, and began to think again.

”So. After the war with the Dragons and the Induk, the Originals became the Shay’s only gods. And then, for some reason, after they had made the Immortals, they died – the Shattering. Yes. But for some reason, the Shattering of the Immortals led to the death of all the Shay, all at once.”

“So. There are a few options here. One – the Shattering caused some kind of seismic shift in the world. This fall out, whether it be atmospheric, or a fall out of Emean energy, or even just a natural disaster, could have wiped out the population of the Shay. However – problems.”

“Why are the Shay’s houses still intact? Why do we have archaeological ruins that are ruined by time and not disaster? It can’t have been that. The world itself might have been fractured, and we’d see more disaster. So… what’s another option?”

Edalene paced back to her desk, flopping down with a sigh. She was beginning to get frustrated. She took a deep breath, and counted to ten, picturing a glass of wine and cuddles with her boys when she got home.

”There has to be another option…”

Focusing on the joy she still felt radiating through her link to Ti’atha, Edalene felt herself relaxing, smiling at the memory of their kiss, her soft floral scent, and then – it hit her.

Edalene screeched, jumping up and laughing. If there had been anyone else in the room, they would have looked at her, scandalised. ”Of course! The Shay and the Originals were linked! Of course!” She laughed again, before sitting down and hastily making a new subtitle, and jotting down her notes.

The Death of the Shay
  • The Originals shattered – cause unknown.
  • The Shay were created by the Induk Idalos through spiritual Emean power.
  • The Originals were too the stuff of this same power, though not created by the Induk.
  • The Shay accepting the Originals as their gods connected them spiritually.
  • When the Originals Shattered, the spiritual ‘glue’ activated and caused the death of the Shay in tandem with the death of the Originals.
Edalene leaned back, beaming. She looked down at her notes, and felt confident in her assertions. It was not as if she could ask anyone who had been there – perhaps Ralaith would have more insights, but she did not feel she had the privilege of asking him such yet – but she felt certain she was on the right track.

Of course, this discovery opened up even more questions than before, but Edalene felt galvanised and excited. Finally, she felt she was working on something worthwhile – something new.

In a strange gesture that would seem wrong and unintelligible to anyone watching, Edalene reached into a pocket of time, drawing out what looked like a tatty old notebook, but with a sheen around it that seemed to speak of memory. She brought the tip of her finger to one page, and into her Compendium poured the memory of her discovery. The heading appeared in her Compendium – The Death of the Shay – and when she touched the words, her own discussion with herself leading up to her discovery played aloud in her mind, like a recording.

Smiling, she folded the Compendium back into time, and began to clean up her work station. Now, it was time for home – time to go back to her boys.
