Rharne Bank
The Rharne Bank is located in the Glass Quarter and, much like its beautiful surroundings, the building itself is quite striking. Round, vaulted ceilings, ornate pillars, large windows, and skylights are only a few of its defining features. The interior gleams as though it is brand new, despite having been built several centuries earlier, with marble tiles and stone walls. Tapestries representing the Merchant Guild’s colours – red, navy, and gold - hang from the ceilings and lead to an easily accessible, albeit slow-moving, front desk. On any given day, the building is filled with Rharnians chattering in a long line-up as they wait their turn for service.
The bank’s vault and collection of private safes is located in the back of the building through a long, torch-lined hallway that tunnels into the heart of the mountain. This is where security is highest, and only guards & employees with the proper access and accompanied customers may even step foot into the hallway. It is rumoured that the entrance to the vault is haunted by the wisps of foiled thieves, though this has yet to be publicly proven.
The bank is owned and run by the Merchants Guild, and is an integral part of the city’s economy. Much of the deposited money and valuables belongs to business owners and merchants, and the bank itself often invests deposited money in local ventures. That said, there is little to distinguish a law-abiding customer from the criminal element, and members of the Shadow Quarter have been known to hide their goods from the Knights using the bank’s private safe system.
Along with offering personal & commercial bank accounts, the bank is very supportive of small businesses and provides loans to aspiring business owners who require start-up capital - as well as anyone else who might need a bit of help. But buyer beware: they are far less supportive of those who default on those loans, regardless of how successful or unsuccessful the business venture was.
Although there is no insurance on the nel or items stored in the bank – meaning that, should anything be stolen or should the bank go up in flames, the Rharne Bank is under no obligation to replace it – the Merchants Guild is highly motivated to keep their customers’ nel and valuables safe, especially since many of their customers are guild members themselves. They employ a round-the-clock security team of skilled guards and thugs. The guards work internally to ensure that the bank itself is secure, while the more thuggish characters are sent after customers who default on their loans to ensure the bank is repaid one way or another.
In addition to the bank’s internal security team, the Lightning Knights always post at least two city guards outside of the doors and one inside of the bank to deter theft and ensure the safety of the bank’s employees and customers.
