[Venora] Adopting Teirue

Image

30th Ashan, 717

The long ride to Venora wasn't difficult per say, but spending eight to ten breaks in the saddle at a time was tiring for both horse and rider. Especially when one wasn't used to it. Lei'lira felt an uncomfortable soreness in her legs from the long trials of riding, and she knew that it must be even worse for Eri and Teirue since they had not done much riding before now. So she was very relieved when they arrived at their destination.

When the orphanage came into view, Lei'lira smiled at the sight of the children playing out in front. A young boy saw them, and raced into the orphanage only to return a few trills later with a kind looking woman that Lei'lira thought might be in charge.

"Welcome to the Little Garden! My name is Maybella Dawson, and I am the matron of this orphanage. How may I help you?"

Lei'lira grinned down at the small girl sitting in front of her.

"I was told that I needed to come here to adopt Teirue here formally."

Teirue giggled, and waved at Matron Dawson shyly.

"She's a sweet one, isn't she? Well, you certainly came to the right place."

Maybella offered to take Teirue so that Lei'lira could dismount. Lei'lira did so, then moved to help Eri down.

"Can I offer you something to drink while we go over the necessary paperwork?"

"I'd like that, thank you. But I need to take care of our horses first. Is there somewhere where I can tie them up and let them graze while we talk?"

The needs of the horses always came first. It was the first thing she had learned as a child when she began learning how to take care of her family's horses. She had taken the lesson to heart, and it was well ingrained in her after all of these arcs.

"Of course. Let me show you where you can feed and water your horses."

The Matron led her to a grassy area where there was plenty of grass for grazing. There was a water trough near by, and the area was fenced in. It was small, but it was clearly set aside as a place to house the horses of anyone who came to visit the orphanage. Lei'lira thanked her. She pulled a curry comb out of her saddle bag, and gave the horses a quick grooming. Then she made sure that the water in the trough was fresh before following Matron Dawson inside.

[Venora] Adopting Teirue

As Matron Dawson led Lei'lira, Eri, and Teirue through the orphanage, a loud cry of angry protest filled the air. Maybella quickly apologized and excused herself before running to see what had happened. Lei'lira watched her go uncertainly, wondering if she was supposed to follow the matron, or wait where she was.

"Hi!"

Startled, Lei'lira looked down to see a boy and a girl who looked to be about seven or eight. Both of them looked friendly, but there was a wary sorrow buried deep in the girl's eyes that spoke to Lei'lira somehow. She didn't know this child, or what had caused the pain she was hiding, but she did know what it was like to have pain that needed to be hidden from the rest of the world. Lei'lira couldn't help but wish there was something she could do to make things better for the little girl.

"Hi." she responded softly.

"I'm Kei'iru, and this is my friend Evan."

"My name is Lei'lira."

"I'm a polyglot!" Evan said proudly.

Lei'lira blinked in confusion at the strange word.

"A...polyglot...?" she asked uncertain that she had heard the boy correctly.

"Uh-huh. A polyglot is someone who knows several languages, and learns them cause he likes to, not cause he has to for some reason. Do you want to know what languages I know?"

Lei'lira smiled, and nodded.

"I know Common, of course. And I also know Xanthea, Rakahi, Haltunga, Murmasian, Basa, Perwarshian, Pij'thak, and Cerke. I'm gonna learn Sulnysian next, but my teacher says that it's a rare language, and Matron Dawson says that the only book she found that can teach it is real expensive."

Lei'lira blinked. She vaguely remembered learning in school that Basa, Murmasian, Perwarshian, Pij'thak, and Sulnysian were all languages that were spoken and written in Northern Idalos. Cerke was a language of Northern Idalos as well, but it was a written language only. She could barely even remember their names, though. And she certainly had never met anyone who could understand any of them, never mind all of them.

"That's a lot of languages. You must be very smart." Lei'lira replied, letting the boy see how impressed she was with her words and tone.

"My teacher says that being multi...multi...that knowing lots of languages is a very useful skill."

Lei'lira nodded.

"Your teacher is right. Common is the main language spoken here in Rynmere, and it is spoken in many cities around the world. But Xanthea and Rakahi are spoken here almost as much as Common is. Knowing all three languages can be a very useful skill. There are also some jobs, like being a trader, that require you to know a lot of languages so that you can talk to the people that you want to trade with. You mentioned Haltunga, though. I've heard of the other languages you know, but not that one."

"Haltunga is the language of the Lotharro. I'm a Lotharro, so it's only natural that I know their language. Do you know a lot of languages, too, Lei'lira?" Evan asked.

"I wouldn't say that I know a lot of them. Certainly not as many as you do, Evan. But I do know four; Common, Xanthea, Rakahi, and I can write in cursive."

"That's okay, Lei'lira. My teacher says that it's a lot easier for kids to learn languages than it is for adults to do it. So knowing four languages is probably really good...for a grownup."

"Thanks...I think." Lei'lira said wryly.

Lei'luna reminded her bondmate of her presence by snickering at her.

I like that boy. He's going to go far in life, I think. The girl, though...Kei'iru?

Lei'lira nodded subtly in the hopes that the children wouldn't see her nodding in response to something that they couldn't hear.

Kei'iru is like you, Lei'lira. She's been hurt inside. If she's ever going to heal from that, she needs someone who will understand that she has been hurt, and has both the patience and the desire to help her. Someone like you.

Lei'lira considered her ose-bori's words for a few trills. She did love children, and she was already going to adopt Teirue. She would be more than happy to open her home to another child as well.

"You have an imaginary friend, don't you, Lei'lira?" Kei'iru asked.

"I used to have one, too...when I was a little kid. I used to like pretending that I had found my ose-bori like my sister has. But she told me that rather than pretend I've found it, I should wait for my dreams to come, and go find it when its ready to be found."

Lei'lira's eyes widened.

"You know about the ose-bori?" she asked, glancing at Lei'luna as she did so.

Kei'iru nodded.

"My sister, Lil'ari found hers already. She says that I have one too, but we're just not ready to find each other yet."

"I don't have an imaginary friend...but I do have an ose-bori like your sister does."

If Kei'iru's sister had bonded to an ose-bori, that meant that the girls were either Sev'ryn, or in Kei'iru's case, half Sev'ryn. That was something else that Lei'lira had in common with the little girl. She was considering offering to help Kei'iru find her ose-bori when the time came when the little girl asked if she had come to adopt someone from the orphanage. Lei'lira explained that she had come to adopt Teirue. Once again, she started to ask if Kei'iru thought that she and her sister might want to come live with her as well, but her train of thought was interrupted by the return of the Matron.

"I apologize for that. Kids will be kids, you know."

Lei'lira chuckled as she nodded in agreement. It was clear that Matron Dawson cared deeply about the children in her care.

"Evan, and Kei'iru, you need to run along now. Lei'lira and I have business to discuss."

The two kids looked disappointed, but they ran off obediently, vanishing into the room that their matron had come out of.

[Venora] Adopting Teirue

Image

As the matron led Lei'lira, Eri, and Teirue passed the door she had just come out of, Lei'lira could hear the high pitched voice of a child reciting numbers in Common. The child sounded old enough that Lei'lira realized that she must be trying to learn Common rather than how to count.

"That's Carlie. She's fluent in Rakahi, and Xanthea, but when she first came to us, she didn't know a single word of Common. Evan has been working with her, and she's made quite a bit of progress. But that isn't what brought you here this trial. You said you wanted to adopt...Teirue, was it?

Lei'lira nodded.

"I would also like to make a donation of three hundred gold nels. Evan mentioned a book that would help him learn Sulnysian, but that it was rather expensive. Perhaps you could use some of that donation towards buying the book he needs?" she asked as she offered the nels to the matron.

Maybella's eyes widened, and she thanked Lei'lira sincerely as accepted the nels.

"You've just made a young boy very happy, Lei'lira. Really, I can't thank you enough."

Lei'lira smiled. It felt good to help the children of the Little Garden, and she was certain that Evan would make good use out of the book.

"Well, the paperwork you will need to fill out is simple enough. But I am happy to answer any questions you might have."

"I do have one question, Matron Dawson. While you were busy, I met a little girl named Kei'iru. She mentioned having a sister who had bonded to an ose-bori."

Maybella frowned in confusion, but she nodded after a few trills.

"Yes, Kei'iru's sister is named Lil'ari, and she does claim to have bonded to something called an ose-bori. I am uncertain whether that is true, or if it is just an imaginary friend, or a game they are playing. Why do you ask?"

"Ose-bori are quite real, Matron Dawson. They are a type of familiar that bond to Sev'ryn, and half Sev'ryn. I have one myself." Lei'lira explained, glancing at Lei'luna as she did so.

"And the reason that I bring it up is that if the girls are willing, I would like to offer them a home as well. I live on a good sized farm in Warrick, so there is plenty of room for them. Living on a farm is hard work, but there are great rewards as well. And there is plenty of fun to be had for a child."

Lei'lira hesitated.

"I...I cannot give the children my family name. I do not have permission for that. No one in my family even knows that I am here. But the children would inherit the farm when I am gone. If they come to love it as much as I do, they will have a good home, and living waiting for them. But if they do not, the farm would be theirs to do with as they wished. If they chose to sell it and use the nels as a start in their own lives, that would be up to them."

This time it was the matron's turn to hesitate.

"I can see that you are able to provide for the children if I allow you to adopt them, but may I ask why you cannot give them your family name, and why you would need permission to do so?"

Lei'lira hesitated again. When she spoke this time, her words were clearly reluctant.

"I am Lei'lira Warrick. To give the children the Warrick name would make them nobles, and my grandmother would never agree to that. But I can provide the children with a good, loving home and a good future if they are willing."

Maybella's eyes widened.

"Yes. Of course. I can see why...yes. If Kei'iru and Lil'ara wish to go with you, I would be happy to allow it. Why don't you fill out the paperwork for Teiaru while I go find the girls?"

Lei'lira smiled as she agreed. The matron did not address her as "lady," perhaps seeing how uncomfortable the topic made her, and for that, Lei'lira was deeply grateful. She quickly turned to the task of filling out the required paperwork. By the time she was finished, Matron Dawson had returned with the children. Lei'lira recognized Kei'iru, and assumed that the older girl was her sister, Lil'ari. There was a boy with them as well, and he watched her carefully with wary, calculating eyes.

"You wanted to see us, Matron?" Kei'iru asked after smiling at Lei'lira.

"Yes. I brought you in here because Lei'lira here has been kind enough to offer both you, and your sister a home, Kei'iru."

Matron Dawson turned to Lil'ari.

"She tells me that like you, she too has bonded to an ose-bori, so she isn't inclined to believe that you are making it up the way many adults have been."

Lil'ari's eyes widened as she stared at Lei'lira in wonder. But she still hesitated, and glanced back at Atreyas. The older boy looked defensive, but hopeful at the same time. Lei'lira thought that it was more that he didn't want to be separated from Lil'ari than that he wanted to be adopted as well.

"What about Atreyas? Can he come, too?" she practically begged.

Lei'lira didn't even have to think before nodding in agreement.

"I live on a farm, so I have plenty of room. If Atreyas wants to come too, he is welcome to."

All three of the children looked relieved.

"Then we'd love to come live with you." Lil'ari said with a huge smile.

Kei'iru was quick to agree, and after a slight hesitation, Atreyas did as well.

"Then it's settled."

Lei'lira quickly filled out the necessary paperwork while the children packed up what they wanted to take with them. Matron Dawson thanked her again for making such a generous donation, and for opening her home to the children. Then it was time for them to be on their way.
