A Lion, a Wolf, and a Couple of Horses

58th of Ashan, 717
midday

A little more than ten bits past he had finally been freed from the dungeon his father insisted on teaching in. Vaughn even had been able to leave the place with his life and sanity in check, though sadly not his future. According to his father, he was to begin study at the university on the jacadon language of Draketh.

It wasn't that he wasn't interested in language because he was, and Draketh in particular. He just preferred hands-on study, like taming horses or smithing or swordfighting, or, in the case of language, immersing himself in the culture and learning on the go... rather than textbooks, Chrien slay him now, and ink and paper. And tests. He wondered if his father was going to kick him out of class at some point. Perhaps even boot him from the university entire?

No doubt.

But for now none of it mattered; he was free and he had a young lady to meet with. He was already feeling better than he had been this morning, more alert. He'd taken a quick nap in the classroom and then rushed home for a fast glass of water or two and a breakfast that he hadn't been able to fit in before. He hadn't brushed his hair, giving up that it would be messy this trial, but otherwise he was awake and presentable. Now he felt like himself again.

He had made his way to the stables and had gone through them row by row til he had come to Kicks' stall, his dapple grey Andalusian mare. The horse seemed happy enough to see him and, after quick introductions, had begun to nibble at the side of his ear, then at the collar of his shirt. As she did he looked her over. She was not in the best condition from having spent almost 5 seasons without his care, and he had heard word that she had been found not within the paddock back home but out in the forest and around the neighbors' fields. She had always been good at jumping fences.

Pride, the stallion, was nowhere to be seen, a dark bay with a black mane and tail and stocking legs who was strong as a bear and twice as angry. Vaughn had been told that that one had not fared well on the ship from Burhan to Andaris and wouldn't allow himself to be confined to a stall, so he was out in the stables' small paddock, separated from most of the other horses till someone could calm him. Vaughn was worried about the stallion. Worried that the people on the ship might have mistreated him in some way due to the horse's ornery nature.
