Requirements For Starting A Business:
- Must have 25 skill points in Business Related Skill.
- Must pay 150 Gold Nel for business documentation and city seal of approval OR consult your city’s Merchant Guild for registration and business permissions.
- Must list and purchase all items the store will have and include as their stock upon opening. (You may request a loan from your city for financial support when starting your business.)
- Deserters cannot own or run a business.
- Slaves cannot own or run a business.
Business Wages Restrictions:
To earn a wage from your business, you must submit a job thread involving your character operating the business or doing something within their business. If you try to cook food for the King in Rynmere and your business is all the way in Ne’haer, you won’t get the wages from the business. HOWEVER, any items sold from your business will be given back to you. (All items bought from your business should be posted in your business location from other PCs).
PCs earning wages from a PC business must submit a job thread working within the business to earn the bonus wage.
PC Employees: Must be working for another PC’s business. Get +2gn extra a day (paid by business owner) added onto regular wage. It is at the business owner’s discretion whether to pay PCs more than 2gn a day.
Business Multiplier:
Simply owning a business gives you a +5gn modifier to your current wage.
PC Employee Modifier:
Each PC employee gives a +4.5gn modifier
Employees: Business Management Level
10 - 25 = up to 2 Employees
26 - 50 = up to 4 Employees
51 - 75 = up to 6 Employees (The option of setting up a second business)
76 - 99 = up to 8 Employees
100 = Bonus 1,000 GN Per Season
How to work out your final wage
You add all the following:
- Base Wage: Calculated as per a job wage.
- Business Modifier: +5gn (for owning a pc run business)
- Skill Modifier: Competent = 1.5 Expert = 3.0 Master = 4.5 Max Skill (250/100) = 6.0
- Employee Wage: -2gn a Day Per Employee (PCs get additional bonus wage for working in a PC business)
- Number of NPCs or PCs Used Within Business
Number of Employees Modifier 0 -0.5gn 1 No modifier 2 1.5 3 2 4 3.0 5 3.5 6 4.5 7 5 8 6.0
Investment Modifier: (Money Spent) x 1.35
The investment modifier may only be applied if the money is spent in RP. You may only submit one investment thread per season and it must be approved with seasonal wages.
Examples
Normal wage earner:
16 (Regular Wage) x 123 (Ashan) = 1,968 GN
1,968 GN x 0.10 (Living Expenses) + .08 ( City Tax [Ne’haer]) = 354.24
1,968 GN - 354.24 GN = 1,613.76 GN OR
PAYOUT: 1,613 GN 7 SN 6 CN
Business Owner:
(Owner has 2 NPC Employees, 1 PC Employee, and 94 skill points in their primary business skill, Cooking.)
Wage = 16 + 5.0 (Just for owning a business) + 4.5 (for skill level) + 1.5 (For Employees) + 4.5 (For PC Employee) = 31.5 GN
Total Bonus Wage Modifier = 15.5
31.5 (Wage) x 123 (Ashan) = 3,874.5 GN
3,874.5 x [.10 (Living Expense) + .08 (City Tax [Ne’haer])]= 697.41
3,874.5 - 697.41 = 3,177.09 GN
3,177.09 - 738 (Employee Wages) = 2,439.09 OR
PAYOUT: 2,439 GN 0 SN 9 CN
Payout does not include profits gained from items sold.
Business Owner’s Investment of 700 GN:
Investment = 700 GN
700 GN x 1.35 = 945 GN = TOTAL INCOME: 3,384 GN 0 SN 9 CN
F.A.Q
Q: How do you determine wage taxes?
A: The taxes go based off the wage you have AFTER the business modifier.
Q: Does the (-.5) Penalty still apply even if I have 1 NPC working in my shop?
A: No, as long as you have one person working there, there is no penalty. However, you won’t get a bonus either.
Q: I’ve hired a PC who is making 21 GN already. How am I supposed to afford their wage of 23 GN when I’m only making 17?
A: The PC business owner is only required to pay the ‘bonus wage’ (+2gn a day). The rest of the PC employee’s wage is “paid for through the city”.
Q: I want to give my PC employee more than +2gn. Is that okay?
A: Yes it is, you may decide how much of a bonus you will be giving your employee. Keep in mind that you should only offer them a wage that they deserve and that you can afford.
Q: Are we able to sell our businesses to the city? If so, how do we go about doing that?
A: Yes! You can. If you want to sell your business, get in contact with your city mod to set up appropriate RP and agree on pricing.
Q: I don’t have enough money to start a business!
A: No worries. Each city should have a ‘bank’ that your character can visit to request a business loan. With appropriate outlines, you may request the entire amount to start your business through a loan. Keep in mind that should you not pay on this loan, thank banks will send their sharks after you.
Q: My business isn’t an ‘established’ place. How do I earn a ‘business wage’ if it’s not in any fixed city?
A: Traveling merchants, investigators, etc.. These are all applicable jobs that you can have a business with. So long as you have a Business Name and your job thread required you doing something revolving around that business or using it in the thread, then it still counts. Even if it’s just selling items from your stock.
Q: My business is in Ne’haer, however, I was requested to do something in another city, related to my business. Can I still get a business wage for this?
A: No. If you were contracted by someone for your services, even if it is relating to your business, you cannot get the bonus wage for it unless you are working within your business. Also, if you were requested by someone beyond the city that your business is established in, they should already be paying you for your services.
Q: Are there other ways to earn money from my business besides the wage?
A: Yes! There are two ways. You can either invest money into your business-- you can do this by doing anything relating to the business whether that’s buying items to restock your shelves, adding in a room expansion, changing the design of the shop, etc. --- or you can sell products from your shop in RP. This can be anything that is on your proposed outline for your business that was approved by a mod.
Q: I sold someone an item, do I get the money for that then?
A: Was it in RP? If so, then yes. If it wasn’t RPed, then no. Transactions for buying and selling items within your shop must be handled in RP, otherwise players can sell, sell, sell, without any kind of barrier.
Q: My shop involves making custom pieces. Even though the general item is listed on my business outline, it’s not exactly what I’m selling for a fixed price, because I custom make things and base the price around that. Is this okay?
A: Yes. As long as you have the ‘general item’ listed with a ‘starting price’ on your outline, you’re free to sell custom, crafted creations for a price you deem acceptable.
Q: Can I roleplay selling my items to NPCs and getting profit that way?
A: Yes, you may, however, you will not receive the profit for the item until after the thread is reviewed. This is only for NPCs. Profit for the item is considered ‘Loot’ in the case of selling to an NPC.
Q: I went and got a loan just so I could buy expensive horses, double the price, and sell them to NPCs. Is this okay?
A: No. Obviously not. First the bank needs to approve your loan. If it’s not for acceptable reasons, they won’t approve it. Lastly, the mods / peer reviewers need to review the thread to make sure that what you’re doing is acceptable within story. If it’s not, an intervention will be posted and you will be asked to change the price OR the mod will only reward you based on what they feel you deserve. So all in all, if you’re going to try to abuse this system, you’re not gonna have a good time.
