Dearest Nir'wei

How strange this scroll is. How are you? You haven't written back and told me about any change in symptoms ~ I bet you that means nothing at all. I miss you, I really do and I worry about you. But I have been undertaking lots of work, lots of study and I think I'm getting there Nir'wei, I really do. There are a few things that I want you to do and I need you to give this list to the people at the Order, to change your doses slightly. I also have a list of things which I want you to stop eating. Nothing scary ~ just certain herbs and vegetables.

So, we're in Scalvoris. I'm sorry we left you, I really am. But things didn't work out with the baby and so the two of us just needed to get away. It was horrid and painful and I could not be there any more. Anyhow, I am still working very hard and I maintain my promise to you, Nir'wei. I am going to work and work until I cure this. I'm not going to stop, nor should you.

I think you'd love Scalvoris. There are enormous owls (called Enormowls) and enormous mice (called Aye-Aye). We've battled giant spiders, too. Padraig is working at the University now, he's an associate professor and I am studying medicine! It's such a privilege and something I've always wanted to do, as you know. Now, finally, I'm doing it.

Please write back to me, just let me know that you're alright. What are your symptoms? I hope that the medicine is alleviating all or at least most of them. I won't give up, I promise you. Please don't give up on me.

Dearest Nir'wei

I just wanted to ask you a favour. I know it's a dreadful imposition and I'm sorry, but I have a friend who is half Sev'ryn. Her name is Kura Wolfsdotter and I believe that, since she was raised by her non-Sev'ryn parent she has a limited knowledge of Sev'ryn. She'd hate it that I asked, but would you mind meeting with her? I've given her your name but she'll be announced before coming to your room, so please say no if you don't want to see her.

I've made a breakthrough today! I'm almost ready to start testing a treatment, Nir'wei. I don't know how close to a cure that is, but I know that it is closer than I was even last season. Much love to you, my friend. Moseke's light on you.

I am writing to invite you,if you would like to attend, to my wedding. Padraig and I will be getting married on the 122nd Vhalar on Scalvoris and it would be our great pleasure to see you there. I thought it better to send a letter to you and to ask you as early as I could, so that you can plan. I understand if you do not wish to attend but I can not tell you what your presence would mean to me.

I have a hundred other things to say - let me sum them up by telling you that I am making progress and I grow ever more hopeful. I will speak to you and see you soon, my friend.

Dear Nir'wei

Oh, my friend it is good to hear from you. I am so glad that you are safe and sound in Rynmere. How strange, I can picture you there - us there. It seems like a hundred lifetimes ago, Nir'wei, yet it feels like just last trial, too. That plot of land is where our dreams began, do you remember? We can do this, you told me, and I believed you. And now, we are. Us, and we can make this place great. Remember, the faction funds are there if you need them, that's what they are there for.

But that is the simple part of this. The rest is more complicated, of course.

However, one part of it is simple and straightforward. Nir'wei, you are one of the bravest people I have ever met - I admire your courage so much. When faced with a death sentence, you allowed hope to happen. You have faced some of the most painful, horrific symptoms stoically - and I know you well enough to know that you're shaking your head now, saying that no, you were upset and worried and terrified. I treat patients on a trial by trial basis and believe me when I tell you - you came nowhere near the hysterics you think you had and I know I did not see.

I've received other correspondence about what's happening in Rynmere, and I'm torn, Nir'wei. On the one hand, I do not doubt it. Magic is wrong. It is fundamentally unnatural and it corrupts the individual literally in their soul. Whilst some magic is undoubtedly able to be used for good - but also there area a number of schools of magic which are simple and pure evil. Necromancy. Pact and Aberration. If it were down to me, Nir'wei, then magic would be banned, plain and simple.

However, burning people alive? That is too far, it is too much. Also, I would question who they are burning. A necromancer who has desecrated corpses and so on is one thing - but is there any hope of rehabilitation, of removal of this magic? What if someone wants to change? I have always had a lot of respect for the Moseke Knights and I think that maybe, until we know more about this apparently bloodthirsty killing of mages, we need to be careful of that Order of the Mantis. But, the Knights would be lucky to have you and would allow you to find out what is actually happening.

You are sticking your nose into matters that don’t concern you, you're being a voice of change and we are warning you now. Stop. By your hand, and the hands of others, Scalvoris is becoming something it has never been and was never intended to be. It’s unnatural and against everything in the old writings.

This abomination cannot continue. Do not disregard this letter or the intent behind it or you - and those you hold most dear - will pay the price.

Councilor Nir'wei:

First I'd like to offer apologies for the way I acted during the Council Meeting. My accusations were in some small part motivated by a sense of petulant jealousy and you were entirely correct to call me out on my manners. I would concede that my ideas presented during the Council meeting, for expanding trade and commerce around Scalvoris, were not anything new, original, or ground-breaking, as you said. However, I'd still hope, despite my rudeness and lack of vision then, that you are open to working with Egilrun, particularly in regard to your purview of aquatics, as Natural Affairs Councilor.

I've had a thought about projects I might embark upon on behalf of Egilrun and one of them might concern your office. Egilrun is a large and growing township, with an industrious and efficient people. Yet, as practical as they may be, they have spiritual needs that must be met. I had hoped to contribute my own funds toward the establishment of a place of devotion, much in the vein of the Glass Temple in Scalvoristown, or the Glass Tree in Almund. I was considering what form this place of devotion might take, and my thoughts turned toward a task U'frek had given me after the events of the Forging. He wished for me to reignite the respect people of Scalvoris used to have for the water, and aquatics. So let me get to the point.

A Glass Harbour. Where people may devote their journeys or arrivals to the entity of their devotion, whether Immortal, Dragon, Induk, or even Mortalborn. I could see a tradition forming around the embarking of such spiritual journeys, of taking a glass figurine crafted by our Glassmaker's Union, and keeping it intact during the journey to prove devotion. But whatever customs arrive from the establishment of the Glass Harbour are for the people to decide, of course. This is only an idea.

As for where your office comes in, as you know Egilrun's coastline is adjacent to a vast shallows. There is no place for a natural harbor to hold larger ships with a deeper draught. I was hoping we could gain your support for the digging out of a artificial harbor, in the northern coastline of Egilrun, nearer to the mountains where there's more of a windbreak, suitable for docking ships. As aquatics is the domain of your office, I wanted to gather your thoughts on such a project, or at least bring my idea to your attention before making a formal proposal to the Council next Cycle.

In any case, whether you approve or not, I look forward to a spirited discussion at the next Council Meeting.
