Elyna nodded, watching his expression with care. Her lower lip quivered so she bit it, teeth pressing against the flesh until she couldn’t meet his gaze any longer. She shivered, the motion starting between her shoulder blades and moving through her spine. Her arms folded across her chest, holding herself together. It was all she had needed to hear from him.
“I released you, seasons ago, from the vows you made to me,” she spoke quietly, her gaze directed at the floor. “I can’t now demand that you adhere to them,” a ghost of a smile crossed her features and she shivered again. Slight trembles moving through her body as she fought with her own reaction and struggled to breathe. Maybe there was something wrong with her, because she felt calm. A horrible calm and it didn’t feel as though a storm was brewing either. She kept her arms tight around her body, before one hand dropped to hold the swell of her belly.
“You love me,” the young woman looked up, dark eyes the pale copper of molten metal, “that has always been enough. That is all I ask.” It had been her promise to the mortalborn, to love him till death parted them. Hesitant and unsure she approached him. “You are my life, Malcolm.” She hoped for once, that he would believe her. Despite all of her faults and transgressions. Elyna reached out, and laid a hand back on his chest. Shy, she stepped closer still, gaze lowered to the patch of skin visible beneath his shirt. She moved forward and pressed a kiss to his neck, just beneath his jaw. Her hand shook.
