Appearance

Large and broad-shouldered, Zedarius towers over most other men. Standing over six feet in height, he is instantly noticeable in a crowd. Coarse hair covers his skin, especially his arms and chest. He bears a few scars and burns from his time in the forge and as a squire in the Iron Hand, but otherwise bears no marks. His muscles are well defined and shaped from arcs in the forge, and his keeps his hair and facial hair short to keep from igniting.

Personality

Zedarius has been described as many things. His superiors say he is honorable, his friends say he is loyal, and his inferiors say he is kind. But they all say he is quiet. Always told to watch and then speak, Zedarius is slow to answer, not from simplicity, but from complacency. He is opinionated and firm in his beliefs, but is not one to shout them over others' in order to feel better about himself.

Those who do not know him well would never guess it, but Zedarius is very passionate. He cares very much about his work and his woman, and will do everything he can to defend them against all storms. He takes his livelihood very seriously, and he holds grudges, sometimes eternally.

History

Born the eldest son of Malik and Rhynna Steel, Zedarius learned to work hard at an early age. Malik was a smith for the Calder family in Pyke, and wanted his son to follow in his shoes. From the time that Zedarius could understand instruction, the boy accompanied his father in the forge. He learned hard work and determination, while also gathering skills from his father's forge.

As he grew, Zedarius asked to take up the hammer like his father, and the two began in earnest to work toward's Zedarius' apprenticeship. At age 8, Zedarius was given his first smith's hammer, a used one his father had poured sweat into for arcs. Though he had the hammer, he was not allowed to use it. Instead, his father taught him the basics of the forge, how to maintain it, optimal heat conditions, and safety. He showed Zed the tools, the surfaces, the metals... Everything Zedarius could glean from his father, he did.

Two arcs later, his father let him work his first piece of metal. Quickly, Zedarius learned that smithing was not for children. He worked trial by trial to build his strength and stamina, basically living in the forge from sunsrise to suns-set. Break after break of sweat and blood went into his job, and Zed loved every minute of it. The ringing of hammer on iron, the shaping of the metal... The work wasn't great, not even close, but it was inspiring to watch him work. As he grew, his love for smithing did as well.

Over the next few arcs, the boy crafted basic knives, swords and armors, mostly to outfit the common citizenry around Pyke. His work was basic, but passed, and was sold cheaply under his father's name. At sixteen arcs, his father wanted him to expand his horizons. He knew his son could forge for a living, but he wanted something more for the boy. He acquired him a squireship in the Iron Hand, and shipped Zedarius off to Andaris for formal training.

Zedarius was bitter with his father. He hated him for sending him away, and for taking from him the most beneficial arcs of the smithing career. For several arcs, he refused to write him or speak to him, though he wrote his mother every few trials. As a squire, he did many things, but continuing his schooling was one. He was taught history, tactics, writing and reading, arithmetic... And through all of it, he found himself yearning to smith. His arcs as a squire passed much in that fashion, where he learned to be more well-rounded, but only wanted to smith.

When he picked up a sword, truly, did he find something to love other than smithing. He poured his soul into training with the blade, finding in it the same solitude in the forge. He learned the basics quickly, excelling in the weapon, before adding a shield to his repertoire to round himself out. And for every nick he got in the sword, or dent in the shield, he would fix it himself. After several arcs, he found the courage to go home and face his father.

He was met with tears, from his parents and younger sister, Maleah. The reunion was sweet, and he and his father shared many stories of the arcs through the night. Having patched things up, Zedarius returned to Andaris, where he continued his knighthood.
