The Facility for Retrospective Analysis
The Facility of Retrospective Analysis is Viden's best-kept secret. Only a select few individuals work in the facility, and only a handful of others even know it exists. It is not knowledge that someone just stumbles upon, lost in the Academy. No. Doors are locked and guarded, and the entrance is so well hidden that people don't even notice people wandering down a corridor that seemingly leads to nowhere. Because people don't notice, they don't ask questions. The population of Viden, including the eídisi, do not even question that such a place might exist, that Yvithia might be experimenting on humans for the sake of research. Those selected to work in the FRA are only eídisi, with a few ellune, who work only to find a way to revive Treid. The only people who know outside of the employees is the Directorate.
Of course there are legends about the cruelty of Yvithia once upon a time. The very existence of the eídisi and the ellune are proof of that. But the legend ends with Treid's downfall, and stories of Yvithia's quiet life of learning since. These are, of course, stories that Yvithia herself created and spread. But her city believes her, and none alive today remember the pain of centuries past. Thus, to many, the concept of experimentation on helpless mortals is nothing more than a horror story to make their children behave.
To work in the FRA, or to even know about it, shows utmost trust from Yvithia. An employee will be blessed with her mark, Xypha. She handpicks employees, based on recommendations from the Directorate or current employees. To all, it is an honour. Though it may also be viewed as a prison sentence: those who are offered may not turn down the opportunity, for they now know. Any who know of its existence are forever bound to the city, and must remain in her employment until retirement or death (whichever comes second). Yvithia's trust of those who know is limited, for she cannot trust the outside world against her employees, which is why they must remain in the frozen fortress. Only three have ever left the city knowing her secret: Xiur, Treid and Valtharn (who is trusted to ship livestock for experimentation).
Upon entering the main building of the Academy, taking an immediate left, followed by a right, will lead you to a narrow staircase, and then to a locked and guarded door, behind which is the beginnings of the Facility for Retrospective Analysis. This unassuming staircase and door is the main entrance to the secluded, underground facility, though there are two more exits, which exist for the purposes of safety. Deep gouges mar the long staircase, as if some of those going down those stairs were being forced, and had tried desperately to avoid their fate. From outside the FRA, it is not possible that anything can be heard, yet once inside, soft moans and cries of pain echo day and night on the cold stones. Dark stains splatter the walls and floor, and even the least ruminative of individuals could be able to discern that it is dried blood. Torches light the corridors on every floor, though their light does little to banish the shadows from this place.
The facility is divided into five floors, all of which are below the main Academy building, heading further into the cold ground. Once heading through the small, metal door from the staircase, the floor you arrive on is actually the second floor, on which is located quarters for overnight supervisors, as well as a number of administration offices. Much like the entrance to the Academy itself, this level is decorated very ornately, despite the fact that only researchers and subjects are offered the opportunity to enjoy it. Heading up one of the two end staircases from the main floor is how you reach another of Viden’s archives, this one related solely to the research conducted in the Facility for Retrospective Analysis. This floor is entirely unrestricted to anyone with access to the FRA, and contains years worth of analysis and research. All documents are limited to the Ancient Script.
The floor below consists of corridors upon corridors of cages and cells, though only about half are filled at any one time. Walking down these rows of meshed cage doors, hands reach out, grasping for freedom as the inmates cry out for mercy, freedom, and in some cases a quick death to end their suffering. Nearly all of the races are represented here, though humans make up the fast majority, as Yvithia believes that they are most closely linked to the Great Shattering. It is through the help of Valtharn that Yvithia is able to collect such a diverse selection of races from all over Idalos, though there is rarely seen are the Ellune - due to Yvithia’s unending respect for Treid. The subjects are kept in certain cells depending on what analysis and experiments are being wrought upon them.
Travelling down the next flight of stairs, now four tiers below the ground, this floor is divided in half. There is a room filled with more cells, though these are designed to hold races with specific requirements for their survival. Here, no more than twenty subjects are kept at any one time. The other half houses the beginnings of the experimental section of the facility. Here, some of the rooms are bare, save for simple furnishings; not all of the research conducted is violent or medical, some is psychological.
The lowest floor holds the rest of the research rooms, and these are all fully equipped chambers, with technology and facilities that would impress even Aeva. The work carried out in these lower rooms is most often arcane or medical and money is poured into the Facility for Retrospective Analysis by the city’s Directorate to ensure that they have the best equipment available to the researchers in order for them to carry out their work. Compared to the dreariness of the holding floors, these experimentation chambers are kept in a pristine, clinical cleanliness, lest cross-contamination affects their studies.
Note: Approval from a Local Prophet is required to RP in this location.
Approval is required to know anything about the FRA. Even rumours of its presence DO NOT exist.
