Appearance

Like his sister, Aeodan is tall and lanky, but is considerably thinner in the legs than she is. Due to his sickness, he has developed nearly no muscle mass, especially in his lower body. He often dresses in somber colors, and tends to stick to simple hairstyles, often just allowing it to fall into his eyes. His hair and eyes are both a dark brown, and he has full lips.

Personality

Often too humble to describe himself, those close to Aeodan espouse his intellect and intuition as his defining qualities. His family often attributes his lack of social skills to his ever-increasing intelligence, though he would never agree with that. Instead, he thinks himself withdrawn from necessity, because he does not understand many his age.

To him, his greatest strength would be his curiosity. The desire to uncover the mysterious is inexplicably important, and delving into the past, whether through written or oral evidence, is a true passion of his. Most comfortable among books and scholars, when he is freed from his shell, he becomes an earnest and honest friend. Never one to shy away from making observations, whether polite or not, Aeodan is often either liked immensely, or detested heatedly.

History

Born mere bits after his sister Edalene, Aeodan was sickly from the beginning. Immediately after birth, it was evident that he was frail, and that his body was not meant for rigorous action. He was swaddled into a soft place, and according to him, he never left that place.

As a child, his parents often spoke to him as though his mind were as fragile as his body. They coddled him, far more so than Edalene, and it drove Aeodan’s desire to succeed, either to spite them or despite them. From an early age, Aeodan began his voracious quest for knowledge, finding that he could garner more information from the people around him than dusty old tomes. Not that he didn’t appreciate the dusty tomes, he just utilized them less than his sister.

Ever curious, Aeodan spent much of his time outside, much to his parents’ chagrin. Of necessity, they demanded that Eda accompany him everywhere, and the two grew to be close. Though they were so very similar, they were different enough to interest each other, and they never grew tired of one another. To Aeodan, Eda was the best friend he could want.

From the time he could read, which was earlier than most, Aeodan spent his time between the libraries and public places, always carrying a book or chart with him. He would sit under the trees for hours, breathing best in the fresh air of a park, and would pore over translations to learn languages, or to study the history of Rynmere and its people. And whenever he found something interesting, he would share it with Edalene, and the two would delight with each other.

As they grew older, though, their interests diverged and became more apparent. His years in school proved to be intensely difficult for Aeodan, but not because of the studies. Highly perceptive, Aeodan became disinterested in making connections with others, outside of Edalene, and received teasing and criticism in light of it. He withdrew into his studies, fueling his fire ever further to ensure his success. It did not take long before his studies consumed him.

When he was old enough, he applied to the University of Rynmere, hoping to study for his marks in history or anthropology. In order to help pay his way, he applied for a job as an assistant researcher, much as his sister did, though in the field of anthropology.

Marks

Xypha
Total Points: 44
  • The Blessing of Xypha isn't difficult to miss on an individual who has been rewarded by Yvithia, such that it appears as a silvery, scar-like impression on the skin around the right eye, which only grows as one is blessed more and more by the Immortal of Communication and Intelligence. Any first-generation eídisi (those created by Yvithia) is automatically blessed thrice (a small compensation for suffering three deaths). Most often the mark is found on Yvithia's creation, though it has been found on nigh all races, save the mer and naerikk. All marks, no matter what the colour of the bearer's skin, will appear as a metallic blue impression: a pale blue for a newly blessed, fading to navy for her Champion. Individuals blessed with Xypha will find that many of their manipulative abilities will not work as well on others who have also been blessed at equal levels, though telepathic links are markedly stronger.

Bellinos
Total Points: 16
  • Vri is often reserved with his blessings. Most will see the Immortal of Death at least once in their lives and Vri isn't in any particular hurry to speed along that encounter. While having his own motivations and desires to remain close with mortals, to mark them is a sign of remarkable trust on behalf of the Immortal. Vri is a somber individual and rarely as boisterous or social as many of the other Immortals. Vri tends to get to know a prospective before marking them, seeing them as a unique soul in a long line of countless he's seen to over the Arcs.
Those who are marked of Vri consider it one of the highest honors and often take a somewhat detached view of mortality. To them, eventually they will meet the one who imbued them with power and find they only have reason to fear the pain before death, not the moments after.
Vri’s Blessing of Belinos appears on the hands of those marked, more specifically, their nails. Coated in a black paint, the nails appear claw like, growing sharper when the abilities are used. The black paint coating the nails slowly creep up the skin, turning it pitch black before fading into the flesh color of the marked.

Sojourn
Total Points:

Abilities

Xypha
  • Telepathic Communication
    • As the Immortal of Communication, Yvithia is synonymous with spoken and written language. But those who truly wish to follow the Immortal find themselves with the ability to communicate with others with nothing more than their minds. With this ability, the Favored Xypha can send communications willingly with those within their range of vision, so long as the person's eyes can be seen. This ability can be used indefinitely as long as the two parties remain within visual range of each other. However, at this level, the Xypha cannot receive the thoughts back, only send his or her own.

    Intuitive Linguist
    • With this ability, the Xypha can choose any one EASY language and rank up to Fluent for free. This language may be denoted with an [XY] in the list, and may exceed the language cap imposed by the character's Linguistics skill.

    The Intellectual's Skills
    • Add an extra three skill points to one of the following skills: Linguistics, Mathematics, Meditation, Research,
Teaching. These points may allow the skill to exceed the 100 cap.

    Identify
    • By observing or hearing a gestured or verbal language, the Favored Xypha instinctively knows the name of the language and the region where it is most commonly used. Additionally, this allows the Xypha to know the place from which the speaker hails as well. Often used for determining intent, this ability does not allow the Xypha to understand the language, if they do not already know it.

    Perfect Copy
    • Communication and Language are important domains to Yvithia, and with this ability the Favored Xypha can accurately copy any document he or she has ever read, whether they remember the exact details or not. This also transcends language barriers, so that they may write what the document said, even if they have no real knowledge of the language. They cannot understand what they've written, but instead regurgitate the information verbatim.

Bellinos
  • Final Moment
    • A Blessed of Vri has the ability to experience the last few minutes of a corpse’s life. They experience the death as if it were happening to them and only come out of the trance when the experience has ended. This is always a jarring and emotionally devastating ability to use as one can never quite get ‘used’ to dying, but it can reveal remarkable clues and insights as to the wishes or circumstances behind a death. A body must be presented, mostly intact (Within a Cycle or two of age), for the ability to work.

    Death's Pallor
    • A blessed of Vri understands the nature of life and death better than any. This ability allows a user to suspend their bodily functions and fall into a death-like trance. Unless another marked of Vri is in attendance, this act is almost impossible to see through without a mastery in the medicinal or surgical field. When entering this suspension, the body effectively acts dead. Limbs stiffen, skin pales, and eyes become cloudy. Any wounds suffered by the marked will bleed coagulated blood. Some marked, after receiving a grievous wound, will leave instructions to fetch a doctor and suspend themselves in the state till help arrives. The marked must define how long they intend to stay in this state. At Blessed, the time cannot exceed three trials. At Adored this time cannot exceed a single cycle. Likewise at Adored this ability can be transferred to another, although only one use of this power may remain active at a time. Supposedly there is no upper limit on how long an exalted or Champion can remain in this deathless trance, although none dare exit the world for too long. The body will not decay in this state, appearing freshly slain for the entirety of the duration. A marked can be killed in this state if irreparable harm is done to the body, in which case the state will become permanent upon the ending of the ability.

    Deathkeeper's Skills
    • Add an extra three skill points to any of the following. These skill points may exceed the 100 cap. Interrogation, Investigation, Meditation, Detection

    Eidetic
    • Those marked by Vri aren’t able to forget anything they have been exposed to or seen within their lifetime. The marked can recall events, conversations, and picture moments with perfect clarity, no matter what time frame within their life they draw the memory from.

Sojourn
  • Blood Son
    • The first ability in Sojourn comes with the blood that is shared of Cassion. The marked is forever changed, transformed a small measure divine by the Immortal’s own blood and commitment. The blooded of Cassion find they are no longer satiated by stagnancy. To be a chosen of Cassion is to have your home always on the horizon. Staying longer than a single Arc in any one city will impart a thorough sense of lethargy and sap the health of the Sojourner until they have finally moved on. They must be away from the location longer than they stayed in order to build a tolerance once more. The Blooded of Cassion are vibrant people flowing with life. Each is gifted with enormous appetites and the ability to subsist on substandard food. So long as it is edible, they can thrive upon it. Each one heals half again as fast as another member of their race and can often push the limits of the endurance that a member of their species might have. By virtue of their divine nature, Sojourners can always recognize each other on sight and any object or person touched by Cassion.

    Journey's Meal
    • A Sojourner must prepare many meals on the road between adventures. Most often, they are accompanied by others. This ability can only be used once a trial but allows any meal prepared for a Sojourner to satiate both themselves and their companions, no matter how little there was to prepare in the first place. In order to work, the Sojourner must do their best to make the meal as appetizing and filling as they have the material to provide. This Meal can feed the Sojourner and up to three other companions (including animals). Those who eat the meal will find the taste vastly improved, so long as the Sojourner explains either the origin or the process of making such food available as they are enjoying it.

    Traveler's Skills I
    • Add an extra three skill points to one of the following skills: Discipline, Fieldcraft, Sailing, Storytelling, Cooking, or Navigation. These points can exceed the 100 point limit.

    Cassion Compass
    • When first marked, every Sojourner receives a small gold compass. This compass does not point the way North as most compasses might, but instead will point the direction to a place of the Sojourner’s choosing. In order to apply, they must have visited this place before in a manner that allowed them to experience the journey there. Teleportation will not count as a justifiable way to input a destination. The Sojourner can impart this compass to others for use to navigate to the location of their choosing and once they have reached the destination, the compass will be instantly transported back to the Sojourner’s person. This compass cannot be lost in any way. If destroyed or stolen, it will take five trials to return, whole, to the possession of the marked.

    Road-Kissed
    • Cassion’s chosen cannot help but choose the life of the road. It calls to them, commands them march along it. But this is no curse, as the road cares for the chosen who tend and travel it. Those with this ability often have a much easier journey than those who do not. Inclement weather, obstacles, dangers, these all still exist on the road but tend to be much less disastrous to the marked if they were not expecting to encounter them. Travel time for the marked is reduced by 25% as they naturally know the fastest paths and shortcuts to reach their destination. This ability does not apply to ‘discovering’ hidden ways into restricted areas, but simply allows the marked to naturally take the quickest un-obscured path between any two points they are traveling towards.

    Safe Camp
    • When one takes camp in the wilderness, they take risk. Dangers lurk when the traveler is in stasis and many expeditions have ended with ambush in the dark of night. Safe Camp is an ability Cassion allows his followers during such a time to avoid some of the worst of what untamed Idalos has to offer. Any camp can be deemed, ‘safe’, but only a single camp for a trial. The Sojourner marks the edges of the camp with drops of his own blood, naturally warding away predators and creatures who might prowl through the night. Marking an entrance, a Sojourner opens a door to a comfortable extra-dimensional space with a warm roaring fire in the hearth that will burn all eve if willed to. This room often changes depending on the area the Sojourner is in, naturally blending with local customs of comfort and style. No object from this room can be taken from the inside as it exists only as a respite for the weary. This ability is only available if the Sojourner takes the time to set up camp, and cannot be used instantly in a combat situation to avoid harm or escape to an extra-dimensional space. This space, while comfortable and roomy enough for a traveler, a few companions, and even their mount, holds no food or other comforts save those that they might need to enjoy a restful evening. A side effect of the ability is that it naturally draws non-aggressive travelers to the location, a beacon for any and all who walk the road to their own ends, but do not seek the end of others they may meet. A Sojourner is not permitted to refused entrance or rest to any who come, even if that means they must sleep on the hard floor outside. Any outsiders seeking to enter the extra-dimensional space for a hostile or aggressive purpose will find themselves in the material space taken up by the camp, not allowed into the space created by the Sojourner. Should the entrance to the space be discovered and destroyed, the Sojourner and all interred companions are transported back to the material space occupied by the Camp.

Miscellaneous Abilities

Ruinfall
  • One Body

Summary: Aeodan and Edalene are permanently linked now. While they are within the same city, they will share injuries. If farther away than that, only the scars and impressions of such wounds will find them. If one dies, so will the other.
  • Empathic Bond

Summary: While in close proximity, Aeodan and Edalene will be able to feel eachother’s emotions as if they are their own. This can cause a fairly powerful echo chamber if they don’t learn to keep their inner selves separate. This can be mitigated with Discipline or Meditation
  • SongStone

Summary: While within the same room or close proximity, Aeodan can harness a small measure of the SongStone’s power.

Trial by Fire
  • Ninacky's Statue

Summary: When held, this object fills the user with the wild, excited abandon of her spirit. All sources of fire in a 30 foot radius will leap and dance, encouraged to grow. Any fire effected in such a way can be taken by the user of this Souvenir and placed on other surfaces to burn, with no damage to the user
  • Twin Parchments

Summary:The ink is full now, but must be refilled with your own blood. You may write on both sides of the parchment and when read on its partner, it will fade off of the parchment you wrote on, opening it up to be responded on by the other. If destroyed, the other parchment (its twin) will crumble to dust.

Xypha Blessing Story

25 Vhalar Arc 716

It felt heavy in his hands, though it could not have weighed more than a pound or two. The cover, tattered and faded blue, held no script, only a small tear along the cover, a faint silvery-grey showing from beneath. The spine offered no clues as to its content. But something resonated in him, a curiosity that he was all too familiar with. He cast aside the stack of books he was to arrange for the trial, and instead sat down at the table, cluttered though it was, and opened the book.

Inside, the runes were both innately familiar and obscenely foreign, written in a language very few deigned to learn. In fact, were it not for Aeodan's intense obsession with discovering knowledge about the first people of Idalos, he might not even recognize the language the text was written in: Ancient. His basic knowledge of the language offered him very little in the way of reading the text, but a few of the runes and words stood out to him, mostly YVTHA... Yvithia.

With a burning enthusiasm in his stomach, much like a child excited for a gift on his birthday, Aeodan pored over the text. He huddled close, dainty shoulders hunching in order to see the book better. Excitedly, he yanked a scrap of parchment from his bag, and grabbed his quill and ink. Quick strokes saw to poor handwriting, but it was good enough for him to decipher later. YVTHA. He wrote it, and then continued on, trying to use a basic substitution and some intuition to decipher the other letters.

As he pushed through the text, the words eluded him. His basic translation offered little in the way of true deciphering, but instead provided him with a few words to dwell upon: YVTHA, LNGUGE, and MASTERY. The final word was clearer than many he'd deciphered, and it gave him hope for the rest of the text. He continued to work diligently, paying no attention to the waning breaks descending ever so quickly into twilight. It was not long before one of the assistant librarians approached him, a pretty girl with slight features.

"Excuse me, but the library is closing for the trial. May I return that book for you?" Her voice was sweet and crystalline, ringing more clearly in Aeodan's ears than any he'd ever heard. But he could not bring himself to hand over the book. Instead, he asked to check it out, which the young girl did with a knowing smile. Relieved and terrified simultaneously, Aeodan clutched the book tightly as he sprinted towards his home.

The night fared no better for the youth. Instead, he grew increasingly more obsessive over the text, unable to tear himself away for more than a handful of bits at a time. Even his food tasted dull without the book near, and he knew the curiosity would consume him until he could sate it with knowledge. With a half-eaten tray of dried bread and meat, Aeodan sat cross-legged, the book resting on his calves. A few more words illuminated themselves, and once again, hope flared in the young boy. The trial dragged on, with the next approaching more swiftly than any Aeodan could remember in his life.

Six words, all discovered on that first trial, were the only that Aeodan had that night. As he put the book next to him in his bed, he tried to drift to sleep, but the calligraphy lettering seared into his mind, flashing before his eyes like memories he couldn't quite grasp. YVTHA. LNGUGE. MASTERY. TNG. TMPTN. BLSS. After two breaks of staring at the words in his mind, he cast the thin blanket from his form and went to his writing desk. The candle was lit without any ceremony, as it usually was when he was trying to learn, and he sat with the book in front of him. The quill felt natural in his hand, an extension of himself, as he scratched and scribbled away on the parchment.

Three trials passed in the same manner, but to no avail. The rest of the script eluded him, even with his rudimentary translation key. The words were either too complex, or he just could not place them together, for in three trials, those six words remained with him. His nights remained the same as the first, sleepless, and he grew more desperate to find what he could find so that he may sleep normally again. But sleepless nights would not deter him, they would not stop him from uncovering the secrets of this book of Yvithia.

A part of him knew that the stakes made the chase that much more interesting. His curiosity had caused problems before, but never like this. Three trials of no sleep, and Aeodan's already-weak constitution was failing him more than usual. He was weaker, more sluggish... He lost his appetite, and his family noticed, he was sure. But they did not question him, not even to ask about the increasingly-dark circles appearing under his eyes. Instead, they left him to himself, offering him the only support they could when he grew more obsessive: silence. The whole house remained as quiet as a mausoleum, which afforded Aeodan the quiet necessary to think. And he turned the runes over and over in his head, learning them front to back, their shapes consuming him.

Every time he put the book down in his room, he found that he could produce nothing. Frustrated, the boy ravaged his room, looking for anything he might own to give him an advantage. Finding none, he snatched the book up and returned to the library, the bright suns beating down on him as he ran. At the very same table as the first trial, hunched once again, Aeodan resumed his vigorous search for the meaning of the text.

From behind him, he could feel eyes on his back, and the discomfort finally grew too much to bear. Agitated, he spun in his seat, coming nearly nose to nose with the librarian who'd escorted him out three trials previously. Startled by how silently and quickly she approached, Aeodan leaned back in his chair, glaring at her.

"Still with that book, then?" she asked, voice light and airy. Her eyes sparkled in the sunslight, but Aeodan just blinked at her, unsure of her intent. "You know, I work here... Perhaps I could help..." She brushed a light strand of hair behind her ear, but Aeodan frowned at her.

"No, thank you. I'm not sure you'd be a help anyhow." He turned back to the book, growing more frustrated with it by the passing break. But she persisted, standing ever so close to him that he could smell the faint mustiness of her skin, like an old book. It reminded him of Eda's hair.

"Are you sure? I'm much brighter than I look." When she smiled, so did her eyes, but there was no true mirth in it. Intrigued, Aeodan examined her again, this time much more closely than before. She could not be any older than he was, but her eyes carried with them something that reminded him of his grandparents, wisdom that only age could bring. With a half-shrug, he sidled to the side, allowing her to take a seat next to him, in full view of the book. She gave a girlish giggle and sat down, hair immediately obscuring Aeodan's view of the text.

"Move your hair!" It was louder than he meant for it to be, and a chorus of "SHHHHHHH"s came from the other inhabitants of the library. Cowed and grumpy, Aeodan glared at the librarian, who had tucked her hair behind her ear so that he could see the page... which she'd written directly on. Beginning to protest, Aeodan saw that she had marked under a word he could not work out, writing in Common: UNDERSTANDING. He shook his head, attempting to clear the daze from his sleep-deprived brain, before she turned to look at him. Only this time, her eyes were a pale blue-ish silver, rather than the brown they'd been before. They had to have been brown. He remembered brown.

"Hm. Your notes here seem to be on the right track, but you missed a common one: Understanding. Or perhaps it's not so common." She smiled, and her tone seemed much more serious and full of gravitas. He found himself enraptured as she spoke to him, and he crowded closer to listen to her speak.

As he did so, she lifted his quill in her hand, dangling it in front of his face. His dark eyes fixed on it, watching its surreal movement as she twirled it and spun it closer. Out of instinct, he closed his eyes and felt the feather brush lightly against the skin by his left eye socket, tickling down to alight halfway on his cheek. Tranquility formed over his face as he could feel the residual tingling of the feather's down even after it left his skin. At noticing his relaxation, the librarian spoke again.

"Understanding is more important than any other word you've found, including Yvithia. Without understanding, there would be no Yvithia, right? It is, simply put, the true key to deciphering this text. Try as you might, without it, you will find no success and will only be plagued the same as you are for as long as you can think about the text. But with understanding, you will come to learn what this text is truly about. Look again."

And he did. Suddenly, it was as if the words fell into place. His blood began to pump, and the librarian stood and smiled, gliding away before he could even thank her. Instead, he fell back into the text, quickly scribbling the notes he could with his new understanding. The book unfolded in front of him, with enough of the words becoming clear to him to give him an idea of the text. It was a book about Yvithia and her followers, the Eidisi. It outlined their worship of her, and her gifts to them for their servitude. Something in Aeodan stirred, and that night, he slept better than he ever had. The Librarian was in his dreams, and he would forever swear she was Yvithia come to guide him to Her. That could just be speculation, but Aeodan was not wrong often...
