“Gee. Thanks.” Avrae responded sarcastically as Caedhe insulted his wisdom. It wasn’t the first time someone had said something about his intelligence. He was about to retort with an insult of his own- until he heard Caedhe’s next words and saw the flash of a smile- the first smile he’d seen from this strange hunter. Naturally, Avrae laughed, unable to stop himself. “Well, let’s see. Intimidating? Sure. Hot as fuck? Absolutely. I’d say it’s a good fit for me, what do you think?” He mentioned teasingly, smiling back at Caedhe. He had met Naerikk, and as unpleasant as he thought they were (appearances aside), he couldn’t help joking with Caedhe. Although it did make him wonder how Caedhe knew of the Naerikk but was totally lost when it came to Aukari. Were his people really so small? I suppose I haven’t really met any other Aukari since I left Sirothelle… The realization left a pang in his chest, an unknowing loneliness. It was strange. He hated his own people so much, and yet to be away from them felt like something was missing. Perhaps that inherent loyalty to his people wasn’t a folk tale after all.

Avrae’s eyes narrowed slightly as he saw Caedhe draw his second bow and give him his first lesson. “Isn’t that more of a rule of thumb for all things? I don’t think hunting is the only time you should have a weapon ready. However, I think at this distance you’d have more luck wielding one of your arrows like a dagger than using the bow itself.” He mentioned idly as he took a nice, slow, deep breath. Caedhe wasn’t the only one aware of how close they were, and as he mentioned it, Avrae’s lips twitched into a smirk. “Does being close unman you?” He whispered, mocking him, leaning even closer- until the finger to the forehead. Avrae hadn’t been expecting it and he stumbled back, head jerking away. “Faldrun!” He swore loudly, hand going to his forehead. “What the fuck? You could kill with those claws!” He spat out, scowling. He was more irritated by the painful jab to the forehead than anything. As Caedhe began speaking, Avrae sulked, continuing to scowl and rub at his forehead.

As Caedhe offered him the knife, Avrae’s scowl only deepened. He gets more frustrating the longer I speak to him. “Do you take me for an idiot? I have a-” He began to say, reaching for his belt where he usually kept his two daggers. Only, they were there. His cheeks began to burn a distinct red as he wracked his brain, remembering them being on the table in the room at the inn when he left. Did I really forget my only weapons? For a second, he was so surprised he just stood there, mouth agape at his own blunder. Then, closing his mouth, he avoided Caedhe’s gaze as he reached out, hand closing around the hilt of the hunting knife. “...Thank you, Caedhe.” He said softly, accepting his own mistake as he put the knife on his belt where his daggers usually were. It was smaller and shorter than he was used to, but it was perfect for hunting.

Sighing, Avrae took some arrows from Caedhe’s quiver, watching him. He knew to turn his back must have meant some degree of trust. And if he was honest, he would have turned his back to Caedhe just as quickly. Had the mere moments they’d known each other already brought them to that point? The only other person Avrae had trusted as quickly had been Mal, but he had also spent a whole season in Mal’s cave. As he finished grabbing his arrows, he looked back at Caedhe, eyeing him. “So, tell me I’m not about to learn from an amateur. I would prefer to learn from someone who knows what they’re doing- so that I, in turn, will know what I’m doing once I learn.” He didn’t know just how natural a hunter a Lothar could be.

"Hot as fuck? What, the Naerikk?" the man rolled his eyes. "God, no," he shook his head. As for Avrae . . . well, in the literal sense, he was hot. Guy had the grip of a dragon's maw. In terms of Caedhe's physical attraction to him, that answer was debatable. He'd seen how he looked beyond the garbs and was enticed, though the Lothar - like many of his kind - found that looking beneath concealment authenticated a man's beauty. He couldn't know until that moment, and the thought of such a thing provoked a smirk.

"Let's just say mild as fuck and we'll call it a day," he teased, looking to the Aukari that he so enjoyed making fun of. Perhaps because of his reactions - controlled, so he wouldn't ignite, yet catty enough to provoke a sense of thrill in the Lothar's blood. Indeed, he enjoyed himself around the Aukari, and he seeked more fulfillment than just that - it became clear that he actually quite wanted to spend time with him and learn of his ways, throwing in a joke or two along the way.

His observation about using a weapon was quite astute, which gave the Lothar hope that perhaps he'd be a decent apprentice after all. The man nodded. As things continued on and he was led to flick the man's forehead with his sharp 'claws', that hope was perhaps slightly diminished by his scowling and his whimpering state. You could kill with those claws, he said. "That's the point," Caedhe replied, as if it wasn't evident before.

“And no, being close doesn’t unman me. It depends on the context of the closeness. If we’re close because I’m beating your ass to the ground, I’m feelin’ pretty manly. If we’re close because you’re plucking an arrow from my shoulder, I’m feelin’ pretty manly. If we’re close because I fell drunk on the pavement and you’re escorting me home, well…” he stopped. Avrae got the point. Though he evidently didn’t get his own belongings, since he was fumbling looking for weapons he apparently had yet clearly didn’t. Looked like it was a good thing Caedhe always brought spares, especially as it summoned a shy and innocent-like ‘thank you’ from the cocky ginger.

When it came to his skill in the hunt, well . . . that was questionable. “God,” he started. “I’ve been doing this for a while, but I swear I’m not the best, alright. I mean shit, look at my prey for the day,” he said, reaching over the treeline to grab the hare Sidhe had left for him. It was gone. “Fuck!” he exclaimed. “Yeah, look at my prey for the day. Jack shit. Fucking god I suck.” He kicked the bush in front of him, calming himself.

“Whatever,” he sighed, defeated. “I’m a good hunter. I’m marked by the fuckin’ Immortal of the Hunt, after all. Karem. Gotta be at least somewhat decent if she thinks I am. Ugh.” He looked down in defeat. Evidently he wasn’t quite the top shit hunter he felt he was, but . . . he was at least better than Avrae!

Such a Beautiful Thread . . .
  • Very good! I loved the difference between Avrae and Caedhe, and seeing their different views on things. I thought the way Avrae flirted and Caedhe flicking him in the face was hilarious. Great stuff, guys. I hope I'm lucky enough to review part two. The story moved along well, my only thought on the matter is this - Was the direwolf completely ignored after its introduction, or did I miss something? lmao. One second it was talking to Caedhe, the next, Caedhe's yelling at Avrae and we don't see any other mention if it. I'm assuming it slinked off somewhere, but thought I'd bring it to attention.

Avrae Kyric

In your first post, Avrae takes his new horse, Kabu, with him. But since he has no points in mount, or related knowledge, I wonder if he would be able to traverse so easily through the thick foliage mentioned. I rewarded you a knowledge about that, and I know it's a small detail, just make sure you consider skill level when writing certain things.
