"Now", she said with a blush and a slight shake of her head when Lady Elyna told her that she was perfectly herself, "you sound like Padraig. I am learning, is all. It is a very different reality to be in, Lady Elyna." Whilst that was undeniable, it was a good one, her gaze, her expression, everything about Faith sung out the truth of that. For all that it did, though, Faith was still herself and she lifted her lips in a crooked, quirked smile. "However, I promise that it will not go to my head and I will remain steadfastly myself."

The movement, though, the breaking free, was delightful to Faith. Breaking out of that move, out of this mold, was so important to her, she knew that. Not being the person who stood and allowed that to happen, but who broke free. That was who she wanted to be, who she was determined she would be. She repeated the move as instructed and she looked at Elyna with a real depth of emotion in her eyes. "I never considered that I would break free from that. Thank you."

She took hold of Elyna's wrist as instructed, and Faith's hand was warm. The camp was freezing, she'd had her hands in water and wore no gloves, but the young woman was warm to the touch. Feeling the cold of Lady Elyna's wrist as she took hold of it, Faith glanced down and realised. "I feel warm all the time", she explained and touched the tattoo on the wrist of the hand which had just reached out to Elyna. Should Elyna have pulled back, surprised, from that touch, Faith would not react. It would not be too surprising in truth. "I was raised in service to Famula. Trained to be a slave in Her name. In freedom, I choose Her as I always have and She put that to mark the choice I make. She blessed me with a number of gifts and I made my vow. So, I'm warm, all the time." She looked at Lady Elyna with a curious expression on her face. What would her friend say to that?

"It's how I knew about his race." Her voice was quiet as she explained that. "He has no blood. I can keep mine warm", which was a real boon to the invariably wrapped-up and freezing former slave, "and I can sense it in others. There are other things, too. I can look at someone and see the truth of them, who they are and who or what they serve in their heart and soul. I would never do that to you, or Ser Malcolm. But I could, if you wished it, to someone whose loyalty was in doubt." It was a lot of information and there was more still to say, but she paused and waited to see what Lady Elyna thought.

Elyna held the younger womans’ gaze, “there is always a way to break free, eventually.” Maybe she should have stopped believing, after everything that had happened with Marcus. It remained true though, her belief. It had taken time, and she bore the scars – or Malcolm bore the external scars of that time and it had also taken the advent of friends, but she had broken free. Here she was, a free woman.

She demonstrated to Faith, that the same circular motion of her hand, combined with a simple step back, was enough to break her grip. It was then that she took Faith’s hand in turn and waited for the woman to repeat the action. Only for Faith to grasp her wrist again. Perhaps if she hadn’t been so used to Malcolm’s unnaturally warm skin, she would have noticed more quickly. As it was, her eyes widened with surprise as she examined the mark on her friend’s wrist.

“Marked?” She explored the word slowly, tentatively reaching up to brush her fingers against her forehead. A shy action, one that she’d done far more often at the beginning of Ymiden, when her own mark had been fresh and felt like…well like it was, a brand on her forehead. Usually hidden by hair.

“All these gifts,” she said slowly and straightened, dropping her hands to her sides. “Do it,” she encouraged with a cautious smile, “see my truth…” Maybe it would be easier than explaining that she too served a higher purpose, a higher power than herself; justice, fairness and truth in all that she did. Malcolm, her heart devoted to devotion himself.

Faith looked at Lady Elyna as she touched her forehead and the former slave smiled a slight smile. She nodded and said no more as Lady Elyna examined the tattoo on her wrist. The pride which Faith felt at the visitation from the Immortal shone out of her and she could not hide it even had she wanted to. Lady Elyna told her to use the ability granted by Famula on her and Faith frowned slightly, concerned at the potential invasion of privacy. It was that which she weighed up, though, as she considered that Lady Elyna was a grown woman who knew what Faith had said. Besides, she would not say no to her willingly.

As it turned out, though, the decision was taken out of Faith's hands. She was just about to question her friend further, explain again what she could and would see when there was a shout from outside. A group of five young squires burst into the tent, in the middle of some kind of fight. Lady Elyna, of necessity, needed to deal with them and Faith knew that Padraig would be concerned so, with a nod from her friend, Faith left the tend and met up with Padraig who was already on his way in.

Everything was done, Lady Elyna had already dealt with the miscreants by the time that she had explained everything to Padraig and Faith watched the Captain leading out the group of them, raised her hand in farewell and made her way back to the tent with Padraig.

I really liked the section that detailed Elyna's inner turmoil at hurting all those that she interacted with. Even though Faith is a dear friend, that hesitance and concern was a really strong thread that was repeated throughout the story.
