Desnind Development Thread

Here, you can post ideas and creations you have for the city of Desnind. There are many things you can develop, whether it be a new Location, a City NPC, or even some new Flora & Fauna. But that is by no means a complete list of things that can be added to Desnind, so if you have an idea for anything else... feel free to post them here also! Bakan Isorosi

In common the title bakan isorosi can be translated to mind growth, or for a less literal translation - for the growth of one's mind. A rather large structure for the city, Bakan Isorosi is constructed across two very large trees with long ramps that lead up to the main door. Two storied and painted in a pale blue to stand out amongst the foliage, many Sev'ryn hold great respect for this location due to its content of knowledge. One can come here to find books and scrolls on a number of subjects, very few of the tomes inside restricted knowledge. If, for instance, there is a rarer piece of literature or very few copies known to be published, the avid reader may be asked not to leave the grounds without returning it, or in even fewer cases, will have to seek permission from the librarian him/herself.

When one walks into the structure, the first thing they notice is the soft, colorful glows of the iyo lamps that hang all around the room. Books line the walls from top to bottom, and a number of chests are placed around for readers to sit. If one were to open these, they would be able to find a box of ink and quills for taking notes, as well as hide blankets and down pillows for extra lounging. This is a very soothing place for the community, often filled with smiles.

Bakan Isorosi is a pillar of free teaching for both children and adults, and while formal education is not required of Sev'ryn, for those so inclined, lessons are held here from different members of the community (often times posted on the community notice boards). These are usually free, however the volunteer instructor(s) may attempt to barter depending on their level of expertise. Beneath the main platform of the library is a fenced in area where most children play or read, some even having picnics since food and drink are not allowed within the establishment.

Details: Bo'kuno, or known affectionately as Bo by many of the children who come to read, is an older man with wrinkles around his eyes and mouth. Protective over the knowledge he has been entrusted to protect, this Sev'ryn is a kind man, but has no time for impulsive fools who threaten society's intelligence. He does his best to educate the youth, often times being convinced by younger patrons into a story time, where he will sit and share a fable. These stories hold bits of truth to them, and almost always have a moral lesson.

Price List

Borrowing a standard book is free of charge, however, if one wishes to take a book home, they must give Bo'kuno a token of personal value for collateral. If he accepts it as a fair trade, he will record the date you borrowed the book and your item, after which time the borrower has up to two weeks to return it. If the book is returned, Bo'kuno will return your token, and if it is not, Bo will keep your token, sometimes even donating the item to the community after so much time has passed, or using it as leverage to barter for new reading material for the library's collection..

Dubäẹbọ

Tall and broad, this nocturnal animal stands just above an average man's waist, usually ranging anywhere between 125 -175lbs. Its fur is a deep ebony, making it ideal for camouflaging itself in the shadows. Other than its massive size, its milky eyes glow in the darkness. Long dark quills stand from its back, often rising when the Dubäẹbọ is faced with a threat or simply overly stimulated.

Price: The pelt of this creature can fetch a nice price at market for the sheer size, and the quills have been used in making pens and needles for both scribes, tattooists, and seamstress' alike due to their durability and range in sizes.The chances of finding one of these creatures being sold alive is unlikely, and would likely fetch a minimum of 100gn.

Habitat: The Dubäẹbọ, or Shadow Knife, can be located in some of the thickest forests in Idalos, but have been also been found inhabiting dark caves, especially for the first year of rearing their young. This is because, unlike other wolves, they prefer solitude to a pack and have been known to grow blind as they age.

Lifespan and Development: The Shadow Knife has a lifespan of about 20 to 25 arcs in the wild. Very few have ever been domesticated, so there is little research of it in captivity. It is unlikely one would ever truly be able to tame one of these animals without having vast experience with handling difficult creatures, but if done, the Shadow Knife can make a fearless hunting companion.

Diet: The Dubäẹbọ is primarily carnivorous, often feeding on meat where it can find it. This includes small rodents, deer, elk, as well as the occasional humanoid that is unfortunate enough to cross its path.

Temperament: Suspicious creatures, they are careful and calculating. The Dubäẹbọ are bold and stubborn, willing to fight savagely if they feel they, or their young, are threatened.

Abilities: Despite its later blindness, this creature is a force to be reckoned with. As a result of their failing eyesight, Dubäẹbọ have adapted different methods of hunting down their prey, relying on their enhanced hearing and sense of smell. The long quill like appendages that protrude from the animal's shoulders, as well as the specialized pads of this wolf's feet are also used to pick up vibrations from both the earth and air, allowing for this beast to target movement from their prey. This makes it very difficult to escape its detection, as the Dubäẹbọ is a ruthless hunter when crossed.

The quills also serve a secondary purpose, excreting an oily and black, ink like substance that this animal will rub on its surroundings and caves in order to attract mates throughout the seasons. Getting this secretion on you is ill advised without preparation, as it raises your chances of attracting other Dubäẹbọ exponentially.

The Stone Oven

The Stone Oven serves as sort of bakery, overseen by a loving, but stern half Sev'ryn who keeps a close eye on its workings, due to the city's strict fire restrictions. This location trades simple sweets throughout the day - first come, first serve, but will take orders for celebrations and festivals if given an early enough notice. These requests are mostly for bread, a food not normally found upon the Sev'ryn table in day to day life. Nothing ever seems to go to waste here, with any excess often donated to citizens in need or given as donations to the local temples.

The sweets that do come from this location usually revolve around natural fruit brought to Nu'vasi - pies and tarts (sometimes in exchange for other ingredients such as eggs, milk, or sugar). Gatherers can come here to make trades with the fruit and berries they find, The Stone Oven serves as more than just a place with working ovens, but a trading hub for kitchen ingredients among other cooks. Food, as well as hand-crafted home necessities (bowls, plates, pots, etc) can be found here.

Boasting of three wood burning ovens, usually only one or two are used at a single time, both of which are outdoors. The third sits within a small stone, platform covering, to allow use in rainier days and keep split wood dry. Ingredients for baking as well as Nu'vasi's supplies are also stored here. Bad weather can and does affect this business, sometimes even closing in particularly nasty days. Due to the use of fire here, a fresh water well and water containers are only a few feet away in case of an unlikely accident. Anyone who works here is extensively trained in fire safety and protocol, and if one were to be interested in something more "meat centered", they would be directed just north - to the Hunter's Fire Pit.

Details:Nu'vasi's story is quite interesting and tragic, as she did not grow up in the city of Desnind like most of her brethern. Her and her parents were dedicated followers of Aiséirism, and spent much of their life travelling between their home and Athart, tracking Avriel slavers and freeing their captives in the night. They did this in secret - using their extensive knowledge of fieldcraft to lead these people through the thick wilderness and escape their kidnappers. During this time, Nu'vasi learned the common tongue in order to communicate with the scared slaves, telling them stories of Moseke to soothe them.

One night, however, they did not make a clean escape. Due to the peaceful teachings of Aiséirism, when the Avriel slavers eventually tracked them, her parents were unable to defend themselves. They died that night and the slaves were recaptured. Barely escaping, Nu'vasi returned home and has stopped such fervent worship. She still holds onto her beliefs, and is quick to share them, but finds her happiness providing for the city and its residents just as well.

Still having a weak spot for others, Nu'vasi decided to name this location in the common tongue in hopes that travellers will feel more comfortable and as such, will still accept the occasional coin from outsiders if no other payment is possible and the buyer insists.

Lisirra's Temple

The Bythni Kanna is located in the northwest corner of Desnind, outside of Desnind Proper. The northwestern border overlooks both the Ta'langean Erọim and Vyẹnyẹ Bou'ae'et as it consumes the land on the corner cliff. The southeastern border begins to blend in with the grassy plains associated with the treeless portion of Desnind. This is the only tainted land left in Desnind that can be associated with Lisirra. Called simply as the "bad lands", this small clearing has rotting branches, dead grass, and standing water all encircling a large, stand-alone dead and decaying tree. A mist is always present, giving the environment a foreboding feeling. The tree itself stretches approximately 10 feet off the ground and curves strangely into the sky. A knot in the tree opens up to a nest where an old owl nests. No one know how old this creature is or if it is a spy that relays messages to Lisirra. It is the 'watchdog' for the temple below the roots. The roots of the tree are above ground with various hiding places located beneath them.

In the past, Lisirra was honored in the city as a way of remembering the past and the creation of the Sev'ryn. Over time, the citizen of Desnind began to develop ill will towards practitioners of Serga Mavranu. Smaller idols were broken and burned and practitioners were chased out of the city. This religious revolution concocted out of fear and hate for the Immortal. Despite the poor favor to Lisirra by most natives, there are few that still believe she is the true mother of the Sev'ryn and praise her for her skills with poisons and disease. They have built a temple in the heart of the Bythni Kanna, under this dead tree. Similar to the Itọju, the entrance to the temple below appears to be bewitched in some way. Only devoted followers to Lisirra know exactly where the entrance is among the visible roots.

The Nọọsï sọ Abin is the temple dedicated to Lisirra. Known in common as the "Temple of Disease," this particular temple allows sanctuary to practitioners of Serga Mavranu and is home to the Cazav. The temple is a series of dirt caverns and tunnels. Despite the small appearance of the tree, the root system is vast and appears to hold the walls and rooms together. Worms and various burrowing insects creep in and out of the walls and floors, adding to the dark feeling.

The main room of the temple sports a statue of Lisirra, cracked in the process of hiding it during the religious revolt. Followers anticipate that the Plague Bearers are capable of fixing the statue, but have elected to keep it the way it is as a constant reminder to devotees about how the rest of Desnind views Lisirra. Currently no other Immortal is honored in this sanctuary. Cazav members take up residence in the temple, maintaining it to the best of their ability while remaining hidden.

Ibẹẹrẹ Ikarahun

Contagious: No.

Appearance: Looking at a person, you wouldn't be able to tell they had contracted this disease, however if disected, their lungs would appear as having splotches of ash grey, with the color spreading as the disease begins to take over. In its final form, the lungs begin to bloat, retain liquid and are completely darkened as the organ begins to fail. Lack of oxygen weakens the immune system and causes more external attributes - like the lips garnering a blueish coloration.

Symptoms: Excessive coughing, irritated esophagus (coughing blood), inability to breathe properly, blue lips, collapsed lungs, potential death

Cure: If caught early enough, boiling the bark of the Strangler's Fig and inhaling the steam twice a day should help clear the disease within a few weeks. Combining other health boosters such as Maggie's Bag can improve the chances of a cure in worse cases of this disease, or speed up the healing process. If one waits too long (usually 1.5 - 2 weeks) before treatment, their lungs have already darkened significantly and may not recover. Death is very possible.

Details: The true origins of Ibẹẹrẹ Ikarahun are unknown, however, Serga Mavranu - devoted followers of Lisirra - claim responsibility. Rumors say that during an experimentation on a man to try and create someone capable of breathing underwater this disease was born. After multiple failed attempts of injecting the man's lungs with a number of poisons and serums, eventually the victim died, and they dumped his body in the river after harvesting what they wanted. As his body rotted, new bacteria emerged from the experimentation, tainting the source. Those who swim and inhale the water have the possibility of contracting this disease, however children and the elderly are most susceptible.

If left untreated, those infected will eventually be unable to properly breath, and will suffocate or die from lung failure/collapse. While the steam of the Strangler's Fig does aid in curing it, it is best to avoid overly humid areas and rainy days, or the condition can worsen.

Ifaworanhan Slosneppe

The Ifaworanhan Slosneppe, ruffly translated to common as meat house, is the only professional butchers within the city of Desnind. The building is built around 5 tall trees and spans across 3 floors. The first floor is the shop in which you may come and trade for meat. The second floor is the storage area, in there you can find hanging creatures ready to be butchered and sold along with already prepared meat stored wrapped in paper and on large cool slabs of stone. The third floor is purely residential and home of the Senile owner, Ra'noti, and his son hunter son, An'ela, who also works the shop when his father is unwell or needs help.

Walking around the place you can always smell blood. It gives a strange feeling and some people may find this disturbing due to the feeling of death that hangs over the structure. Although no creatures are killed there it is still filled with them and Ra'noti can often be seen with bloody hands and clothes. He is often the muse of many young children who will come and spy on the scary looking man. They will watch him until he notices them and then will often run away screaming at the scary man. The building is quite an impressive one and without the horrid feeling that resides over it it would make a beautiful home.

He is often tired and has begun to get quite fragile and frequently unwell. During these waves of sickness his son will often take over with working the butchers until he recovers. He is always welcoming to his friends and loyal customers but wary of outsiders and may sometimes fail to serve them.

He is stubborn and that makes him bad at Negotiating and can often cause disputes over changes from the normal prices when he takes over when his father is sick. He is a good hunter and at least a fifth of the product traded within the Ifaworanhan Slosneppe is his. His father has prepared him as well as possible to take over when he eventually passes, however, An'ela would actually see it be sold or at least employ somebody but himself as his true calling is Hunting and the Ifaworanhan Slosneppe would just be in his way.

Found: The flower is found in the Makabwa Lori and grows high in the old trees. The main stem of the flower will wrap itself around the branches of a tree and there the smaller stems of the flowers will grow and the heads will appear atop those stems.
Toxicity/Hazard: No real danger to animal and human life in unprocessed form.
Appearance: The Syanan Okan is a small flower which grows at the end of a stem around 4 inches in length from the main stem. With silk smooth purple petals and black pistils in the centre the flower is quite beautiful although rather difficult to admire due to its location of growth and time of bloom. Yet a lucky few may attest to its beauty, however, the majority have never had the chance to see the flowers.
Properties: The unprocessed flower can cause a state of strong relaxation when ingested. However, the flower has very few unprocessed properties and effects, it is in no way dangerous in this form. The flower petals can be processed to make the strong Hallucinogenic, Itaja sọ besvon ma'aikata (roughly translated to common as causer of waking dreams or more directly as maker of awake dreams.)
Other Information: Translated as to common as Night flower. The flower only blooms at night and in the late cold and early rebirth seasons. The flower is most commonly harvested in Cylus as the flower is in bloom more then than any other time during the two season.

Price: 14GN for outsiders within Desnind and Sev'ryn from the city can trade for the drug if they have a valuable/useful enough item.
Details: The drug is a processed form of the petals from the Syanan Okan. The petals are dried out in an cool and dry area normally a basement or specifically created room. The longer the petals are allowed to dry the stronger the affects of the drug. When removed from this location if not stored correctly the petals will go off within approximately 30 trials. If stored well the petals can kept up to 140 trials after being removed from the drying room. The petals have lost their purple colour by the time they are ready for use and are a brown shrivelled petal which can flake quite easily and dissolves in water. Warm water speeds up the time for the petals to dissolve and also weakens the pungent taste.
How To Use: The dried petals are dissolved in warm water and the drink is then consumed. A very simple method of taking the drug is also to directly consume the dried petals, however, most users prefer to drink the fluid than chew on the dry substance.
Side Effects: The drug causes strong and vivid hallucinations that are believed to reveal a persons deepest feelings. These hallucinations have been described by many as like a dream, hence the name sake of the drug, Itaja sọ besvon ma'aikata (Roughly translated to common as causer of waking dreams.) The drug has been said to be highly addictive and if taken more than twice can be very hard to stop. From repeated use the drug can cause the following, dependency, psychosis, violence and from extreme use loss of mental capacity. If taken in excess the drug can cause the user to fall into a comma and in even higher doses the drug cause complete paralysis and suffocation. When trying to give up use of the drugs frequent users can find themselves in a great amount of pain from stomach cramps, headaches and muscle ache as well as extreme mental side affects including depression, schizophrenia and often violence.
Status: There is no specific law relating to this drug and views of the drug vary throughout the city of Desnind where it is predominantly used. Most people view the use of the drug frequently as foolish and irresponsible. However, the drug has been used by some and still is viewed by some as a good way to explore yourself and who you truly are as the drug is believed to reveal the deepest and also darkest parts of yourself. A handful of people within the Sevir society would even recommend the drug to young adults who are still struggling to choose their path.

History: Naficula wajen is now some what a man of Legend. Having once worked as a Doctor within the city of Desnind he had been a kind and caring being. He had never hurt a being and had devoted his life to saving them from disease and injury. This had been his life from the age of 6 to 23 arcs. The man would have remained this way his entire life had it not been for one fateful night. It was his 24th birthday and he had been feeling adventurous. He had gone to his medical supplies and taken out the drug, Itaja sọ besvon ma'aikata, and prepared it for use. Drinking the whole cup he experienced life like never before, seeing the world in a new way. The drug, however, was too much for him, he was unable to resist its pull and the following season he began to deteriorate. He was taking the drug almost every night. He found himself growing agitated and violent, and a strange state of discomfort with his own body. One day in Cylus he was working on a sick family, they were all suffering from a strain of Flu. He had entered the house calm and collected, nobody knows what happened within that house, but when he left he was covered in the blood of the family and he had scratched away much of his exposed skin. His insane laugh had echoed around the City of Desnind waking many as he had sprinted out of the city and into the immense forest. Many believe him to be dead having been gone for 60 arcs now, and this would be a fair assessment if it was not for evil laughter said to be heard by those who wander too far from the city during Cylus. There have been many reported sightings of the Insane doctor within the forest, however, none yet have resulted in his death or capture. Many people now Dismiss him as a legend not believing with his advanced age and dependency on the drug that he could be alive. Some even claim the story to be a myth. But some of the Elders still remember the bloody scene of that night and the brutality with which he had killed that family.

Bounty Price: 150 GN if captured or 120 GN if killed.
