Thray
Image
Name: Thray

Quick Facts:
Height: Up to 8'5"
Width: 2'5"
Weight: Up to 300 lb
Native to: Hotlands and Nashaki
Locations: Eastern Idalos.
Appearance: Standing anywhere between five and eight and a half feet tall, the Thray are an intimidating sight, men made of clay body shells and when cut open, bleed dry sand. Their facial features aren’t very detailed or animated, but they do look rather sinister with knitted brow and narrowed, black, empty eyes. Rather than working by sight these abominations seem to rely on their sense of hearing, or perhaps the vibrations they feel in the sand or rock through their feet. They look chiselled, muscular and strong, and though they move relatively slowly, these sandmen pack a mean punch.

Habitat: The Thray are found nowhere else in Idalos but the Hotlands of Nashaki, specifically in and around The Mud Flats, though they have been known to move about. They need water to form their clay-like, protective outer shell and have the ability to reform their limbs or even build duplicates of themselves in the right conditions. They are most likely to attack during the day when the heat of the sun is available to help them form, but night attacks are not unheard of. Thray do not speak and cast no shadow on the sands, seemingly defying certain laws that apply to the rest of the world.

Temperament: These clay warriors of the Hotland sands are particularly aggressive towards all races excluding Qi’ora, Sev’ryn, and (still in development). No one knows why these sand guardians stalk the sands, what purpose they serve, nor for whom, but they won’t let anyone near the wrecked tall ship beached on The Mud Flats, and don’t attack unless they deem someone or something a threat. Often the Thray can be seen standing like tan statues, unmoving and ominous, almost cryptic in their existence. Thray men will give chase if someone trespasses on their turf, but usually don’t stray too far from their territory unless provoked.

Abilities: Made of sand and held together by clay. Thray cast no shadows on sandy ground. They have no eyes but are believed to hear and feel vibrations through their feet and limbs, acting on these quickly. Thray can sense the difference between a hostile and nonaggressive target and will tolerate certain races more than others. Thray are also resilient to arcane and can only be incapacitated by physical force, usually with sharp or heavy, blunt weapons.

Mole Cactus
Image
Quick Facts

Height: Up to six inches.
Width: Up to six inches.
Fruit: Small red flowers, inner flesh is edible.
Poison: Red flowers are poisonous.
Native to: Nashaki, hotlands.
Locations: Eastern Idalos.

Appearance: Ball-like cacti covered in small, sharp barbs. Their skins in a pale, sickly green colour as most of their energy goes towards preserving the water their inner, white flesh contains rather than maintaining their colour. They generally fit comfortably in the hand and the barbs are soft but prickly and often easy to remove. They are, however, difficult to get a hold of as they have little fury sensors on the ends of their bards that can feel when there is a shift in the air or sand, alerting them to the approach of an animal which sees them quickly burrow into the sand for protection, often before they are even spotted.

Habitat: Native and confined to the Hotlands near the City of Nashaki, the Mole Cactus prefers hot conditions and will not grow in anything but sand. They are a moving plant who go in search of water and can hold and purify water, processing it slowly to filter all of the chemicals and minerals out of it (such as salt). Commonly found between the city and the Salt Lakes, Mole Cactus are an excellent source of water to those lost in the desert and their white, fleshy insides are good to eat and free of poison.

Lifespan and Development: The inner segments of a Mole Cactus are broken down into six chamber, somewhat like an orange, each holding a single seed. At the end of the plant's life cycle, usually up to five arcs, the Mole Cactus dries up and splits open, and the seeds fall into the sand and germinate, or are pecked out by birds and scattered far and wide across the desert.

Uses: A survival plant, often plucked up and stored in a bag for travel so that a person can eat the flesh and drink the water when they need it, the Mole Cactus can live up to one hundred trials without touching the sand as long as it had refilled with water recently. The small red flowers that bloom once an arc are mildly poisonous and often used in sleep remedies, able to knock out a full grown man within seven bits.

Abilities: Burrows into the ground when it senses movement in the air or surrounding sand. Mildly poisonous flowers are used to knock people out.

Spider Cactus
Image
Quick Facts

Height: No more than a foot.
Width: Each stem extend to about three inches maximum.
Length: Up to two metres long.
Flowers: Red flowers.
Poison: Not Poisonous
Native to: Nashaki, Hotlands.
Locations: Eastern Idalos.

Appearance: Comprised of a large number of spindly arms bristled with barbed spikes, this cactus like plant is green in colour with a slight yellow tint during times of malnourishment. Small red flowers flourish across its body spider like body that’s roots reach far into the ground and spread beneath the sand in a web like fashion. Its red flowers are incredibly hard to get hold for obvious reasons, not only do these rare flowers neutralize heavy amounts of pain, but are also known to have great healing properties that are able to help cure some of the most deadly diseases in Idalos. Height wise these plants stay low to the ground, due to the thin constitution of the stems that are unable to support the weight of lifting it to a higher altitude.

Habitat: Native to the desert lands this uncommon plant thrives in extreme heat. Although they are able to root around rocky terrain, there must be sand nearby as they find it difficult to function without it.

Lifespan and Development: Up to 100 Arcs, the age of these plants can be discerned by the amount of arms they have as the older plants have more arms. Spider cacti produce runners, also known as stolons. These runners will eventually develop their own roots, resulting in a clone plant. Once these adventitious roots establish in the sands, the runners begin to dry up and shrivel away

Uses: The flower has healing properties and the barbs are extorted for Nashaki torturing tools.

Temperament: Carnivorous. Dangerous and out to kill you this plant will suck your blood dry. Drawn to the blood of both humans and animals it waits, ready to entangle its prey in its roots that shift from beneath the sand. If that wasn’t enough, their barbed and bristly exterior upon contact with this plant cuts through the skin and into the flesh, allowing them to easily knock an individual unconscious.

Abilities: Cures a multitude of strong disease and relieves heavy amount of pain.

Hotland Grass

Image
Frequency: Spread all over the Hotlands, except for the center, where it becomes too hot. Several species can also be found around the outskirts of Nashaki.

Toxicity/Hazard:

Appearance: Knee-high long strands of grass that often peek from the edges of sand dunes.

Properties: Very tough and contain thick stems, but if broken, can be used for livestock fodder or it can be woven together into handy baskets.

Other Information: One of the few species of plantlife found around the Hotlands completely harmless. Unfortunately it is also mostly useless.

Thorned Bush
Image
Frequency: Common throughout the Hotlands and Nashaki, although many locals have taken to removing the plant wherever possible, since it provides no benefits for the community.

Toxicity/Hazard: The thorns contain a concoction that, when it mixes with blood, becomes toxic.

Appearance: Sparsely-spread small brown bushes with tiny green leaves hidden amongst yellow-tinged thorns. Its roots extend deep into the ground all around it to suck up limited moisture and small leaves are hidden close to the branches surface.

Other Information: The axehead antelope, due to its powerful digestive system and tough mouth, is the only animal that can feed on these bushes for sustenance without either having its stomach torn up from the sharp thorns, or its blood poisoned by the toxins.

Flora and Fauna

Fruit of Life
Image
Frequency: Native only to Nashaki and a limited scope of the surroundings, these fruit are prevalent alongside oasises in anywhere from small clusters to larger clumps, depending on the limited nutrients available and the time of the season.

Toxicity/Hazard: The fruit's acids are manageable in small doses, however without moderation, over-consumption of these plants can cause serious stomach troubles for any organism, with acids causing stomach aches and digestive issues over the next several days. Near civilization this is easily manageable, if uncomfortable. Out in the Hotlands however, the dehydration could easily be fatal.

Appearance: These fist-sized fruit grow on thin spindly 'trees' with only thin spines on the upper quarters for leaves. Their stems are pale white, moving down to a dark purple on the lower portions, nearly black on the bases.

Properties: A stiff, rubbery purple outer casing can be cut away to show a very juicy purplish-pink inside much like one giant orange segment. Its taste is oddly familiar to grapefruit but with a much more watery consistency. While the lower portions of the fruit are edible, the hard white stem is not. However, if the stem is squeezed, a white sap will drip out and if rubbed into a snake-bite, can increase the chances of survival by up to 50%.

Oasis Tree
Image
Frequency: Native only to the deserts of Nashaki, this tree is found in sparse locations, usually close to underground water veins that are too deep for people to dig down to.

Toxicity/Hazard: The tree is not what is appears and has a dangerous secret only the dead know.

Appearance: Tall, widespread trees with long, thick branches. From a distance they don't seem much to look at, but all travellers know that trees mean water, and this is how the Oasis Tree survives, drawing blood from any who venture too near.

Properties: Living for thousands of years, this rare succulent tree has spent time stockpiling water within its large bulbous roots below ground. To a thirsty traveller, chancing upon the tree seems like a godsend - but this could not be further from the truth. The tree is covered in three inch spikes, from which many mangled skeletons cling to. Using its elastic branches, the tree will swipe and impale any who come close by. The wood is as tough as iron to pierce and resistant to fire.

Hopping Mouse
Image
To avoid the searing hot sands, this sandy colored mouse will hop about to feed on small insects like the Saun Beetle. The mouse has an effective way at evading the quickest of predators by generating a large jump of ten feet. This can tire the mouse considerably, but often it is enough of a lead to get away. The sinews of its legs can be used for twine for bows - one of the best materials for this use.

Saun Beetles
Image
Located in vegetative areas of the desert, the Saun Beetle will settle under the sun in their thousands, lifting their wings to reveal a black carapace. The sun's rays are absorbed to provide a chemical reaction similar to photosynthesis. Energized, the beetle will spend the night feeding and tending to their young. These beetles are collected by the Qi'ora as a rich food source in conjunction with the nourishment of sunlight. Often, these are eaten when inadequate sunlight has been consumed the previous few days and extra energy is desired. Water is also trapped by the Saun beetle in a similar way during the night, capturing minute amounts of dew from light fog.
