Appearance

Nell has never fashioned herself a “pretty girl”. Some men find her attractive, but for the most part, she does not play into it. She dresses plainly, keeping her golden hair in a tight braid that goes down her back in between her shoulder blades. Her eyes are cold crystal, and her sharp features often give her the look of a disappointed schoolmarm.

She bears no visible scars on her bare skin, but has a few under her armor. Her skin is smooth and clean, though she is no opposed to tattoos. From head to toe, she stands at five feet and six inches, and is very muscular for her height. She takes pride in her strength, and cares not whether find her too masculine.
Personality

Nell has been described by many as cold and cynical. She is analytical and will take most things at face value, judging their worth based on their apparent value. She does not care for subtlety and will often confront cunning manipulation with steel.

She likes to fight, that much is easy to tell. She seems very much the hardened warrior, and though she does find joy in things, they are few and far between. Intense and serious, she travels through her life with the look of a woman who will do what she has to, no matter the cost.
History

From birth, Nell was close with her mother. As a sickly child, Nell had to be constantly cared for. Her mother couldn’t work, so she was forced into the arms of a merchant for the stability. It was not an unpleasant union, just a loveless one, and Nell grew up observing it. To Nell, her parents’ relationship was a clinical business partnership, and it molded Nell’s very outlook on life.

At just a few arcs, Nell’s health started to improve. At 5, she could run and play with the other children, though she did not. Instead, she would attempt to watch the knights and warriors train, fascinated by their shining metal armor and sharp weapons. She would rant to her mother about how there were no girls, how girls could do it better… And her mother always just smiled and laughed. Nell vowed to be a knight one day, just to show them.

As she grew, so did her desire for martial combat. At her 13th arc, she picked up her first practice sword, and she spent most of her trials emulating the knights she watched. She became very good for someone without any formal training, and her mother worked hard to find someone who could mentor Nell to the heights she had wanted to go. Unfortunately, not many saw the future in a girl squire, so Nell was rejected countless times.

At 17, her mother died of disease, something that shook Nell to her core. She distanced herself from everyone, including her merchant step-father, and ran away to The Eternal Empire. Here, she found many warrior women, and decided to be like them. Using just her first name, Nell joined the Eternal Empire’s military, finally getting the training she so desired.

She trained with such ferocity, and fought with such rage, that the other warriors gave her a wide berth. Her sword arm was good, and her tenacity was unparalleled. When they went on patrol, Nell would take point. If they came across bandits, or monsters, or anyone looking to harm them, Nell would be the first to engage. To her, the bloodlust made up for the arcs she’d spent wistful and wishful.

Her battle tactics were so ruthless and primal that the warriors she fought beside began calling her “Death Nell”. She relished the name, deciding it was a title of honor rather than derision. She donned it proudly, and was known was “Death Nell” from then on.

However, the others in her patrol became jealous of her prowess. They took to teasing her and undermining her every chance they got. They would steal her gear, or throw them in the river while she bathed. They would make fun of her, threaten her… And she responded in kind. She would fight and argue and spit with the best of them. Finally, though, she grew tired of it. In the middle of the night, she packed her gear and left. She hasn’t looked back.
