Kino's Personality

by Kino
Kino finds himself in absolute silence unless he converses with another soul. When he speaks, his voice is hushed and his eyes may sometimes shift to scan the background of the subject in question before resuming eye contact. While the voice is not prominently emotional, Kino still expresses the same fears, shock, rage and admirations that any flesh ape could, but through facial expressions and physical gestures and actions. When he fights he may look anxious or determined and this alone is visible through his eyes.
He holds indifference to social status and many races but harbors a deep distrust to Immortals when he sees them as no different than the nobility and the kings and queens that control power over the masses, but far more mystical. For the time being he may be cautious should he ever encounter signs of their presence or power, never willing to accept any blessings.
Violence worms deep into his brain even during his previous life in nobility, if for a few occasions. There is no war cry or scream or yelps or insults that escape Kino's mouth. Only the impact of steel and fists and feet and teeth and splashes of blood. It's killed or be killed.
While Kino may be vicious in combat, there is softness in his heart. There is care for the children. For the women and girls. There is a spot for the goodness of humanity and other races that he acknowledges and cherishes so he knows that among the dark clouds that cloak the skies, there is light to be found. And how beautiful that light is. That is enough to keep his bleak view of the world at bay.

Kino's History

On the Western regions at the distant outskirts of Ne'haer was a hilly estate towered by a castle of nobles whose existence are now entombed in the footnotes of history.
The Asa family were a few former nobles of the now extinct House Morandi who carved their own patch of land when they discovered a hilly terrain occupied by an abandoned castle was fertile enough for plenty of cash crops that they longed to farm and profit to ensure the survival of their noble heritage. To defend their estate from imminent threats, mercenaries were the bulk of their meat shields, although a few of their surviving knights were eventually absorbed into their administration.
Surrounded by a moat and spiked wattle fences that supported the only entrance/exit, cash crops and slaves sprawled along the estate. The base of the hill is pockmarked by some structures built for fueling production and shanties sheltered by leaky cured hides of beasts and rotting wood. The doors were locked in bedtime and slave counts were routine even in the midst of their slumbers. Ascending the hills were luxurious dwellings and storehouses and an armory. The castle was the summit.
It is on this hill that Kino was brought into the world among the Asa nobility. Here he was doted with privileges and comforts and plentiful of delicious, exotic morsels. Here he was educated to read and write. To ride a horse. To follow noble customs. To serve as a page for an overseer of the slaves who long ago was knighted after surviving a war at the cost of his arm and frontal lobe.
When Kino grew up to be a squire, he endured long practices with weapons and mounts and armors and exercises while also being relegated to any tasks that the few knights or nobles gave him, including his own parents. Sometimes he was to assist them in fighting off assaults from bandits and, on a few occasions, cohorts led by a raubritter (robber knight) who claimed to wage war against slavery.
While knighthood was typically granted to squires aged in the early 20s, this was not to be for Kino. Since 21, he grew more sympathetic towards the slaves and became disillusioned with the opulent masks of nobility. He disobeyed orders and endured criticisms and mockery of his progress. When he was dragged into an arranged marriage that may grant wealth and a guaranteed bloodline, he responded with flurries of fists against his parents' faces and slit the windpipe of an intervening knight before he was condemned to torture and the dungeon.
When three years of imprisonment passed he was knighted into the ranks of the slaves and endured vicious beatings and insults and hard labor. For two more years, this was his fate.
The only respite in his world was a slave girl whom, together, they bonded over their miseries and past lives and hugs.
Then a siege was unleashed upon the estate. The jaws of the same raubritter's stolen war chest were agape.
Kino was rudely awakened by a stiff cadaver of a cattle that crushed through the roof and into the foot of his bed. Upon stepping outside into the chaos, he found himself hiding inside a barrel almost filled with watered-down ale and he spent the next several hours shutting his eyes and taking breathes on the constricted surface. When he tipped over and crawled out of the barrel the siege was over. Silence and carpets of corpses and crushed crops and upturned soil were the estate's new look.
Among the bodies were the slave girl. A smile. Hushed giggles. Whispered encouragement. A soft kiss. I like you even in death. Kino felt tears rolled down his bruised cheeks, then he cried in agonizing silence. Her head was sitting on its blood caked stump on her chest.
He waded past the bandits and surviving slaves. Up the hills towards the house's noble premises, armored corpses littered on the streets like dead upturned cockroaches . He entered the castle and watched surrendering mercenaries pierced by crossbow bolts and hacked to pieces by blades and axes. He saw nobles burned alive and shrieking like rooted mandrakes. He saw prisoners of war lined up chained around their waists.
He found himself in the quarters of his parents. They were nowhere to be seen. He scoured the room and discovered a heater shield lined with steel. It displays the Asa nobility's coat of arms: a golden rampant lion on a canvas of red.
He shouldered the shield on its guige and moved on swiftly. In the stables he found a white horse and a donkey intact and he shut its doors and slept among the hay until the moon peeped up behind the clouds late into the night. He calmed and embraced and mounted his horse while dragging the donkey with him out of the stables. He galloped away in the dark and outside the estate came upon a scant encampment where he swiped the tent and bedding and possibles and saddle bag to his persons before continuing on northeast.
The castle and the entire estate was razed and looted and left to rot in its ruins. A hill is all that remains. A year later, flora bloomed over a patch of soil where a skeleton rests six feet under in eternal peace.
