The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

[Egilrun - Sea Spray Ships] Creating ship thrusters

That's a lot of water
Thread permissions and details
In this thread, Winston makes the thrusters from a Class 4 Saltenrock (Tritonyte) (by combining lesser wells of course) to make thrusters that can project propel a boat/ship.

This effect is part of a larger project, but was approved in this PSF (which is for ships, but the ships are propelled by thrusters... these devices :-)).

No review should be needed for the device itself, which is covered in the PSF provided, but all queries are welcome if you have any.

Required for this device are two Class 4 Saltenrock wells (or the equivalent of) times two per ship making 4 class 4 wells in total.

I have crossed these off the Isonomia supply here as:
  • 5 x Class 3 Saltenrock (Tritonyte)
  • 1 X Class 1 Saltenrock (Tritonyte)
Winston set the
seaewell prototype
back on his cluttered work table, mind already racing ahead to the next steps. He could boost the power from a single tiny Seawell by combining them together, as he had with the Miragestones. The little ferret began scribbling notes and sketches excitedly, glyphs and circle designs to flavour the trial as his mind raced.

He might have done similar things before, but these were potentially offensive well affects and he needed to ensure the power was properly focused. Wizardry of this scale would require more than gentle songs and glyphs. He wiped his brow and set aside the design ideas to address the practical workings. Powering multiple Seawells safely meant crafting rigid frameworks to mount them within, along with a mechanism to control them that could handle tremendous energies. This would require some high class Chistones to allow the appropriate amount of energy to be channeled without destroying the wells.

He began gathering an assortment of components from around the cluttered workshop and loading them into the a dozing
Chest
at the room of requirement's entrance. It was sure to be a long Trial ahead and
Smokie
hovered beside him with hands at the ready!

Smokie got the forge up and running while Winston gingerly set out the Wells from the Isonomia store of wells from the lab.

Straightening his goggles and stroking his whiskers as he contemplated the Seawell fragments before him. The milky azure crystals were the size of his head and thrummed with ethereal energy that set his fur a-tingling. Tentatively, he reached over and began to activate the glyphs as he chalked them out onto the floor, allowing Smokie to provide a silent second pair of hands to arrange the other regents and tools needed for the refinement process to begin. Together they sketched subtle glyphs and circles across the fragment's refracting facets, coaxing out whispers of its inherent power. Tapping and refining the raw wells into something more orderly and manipulatable, they worked the wells into a state that not only produce the optimal effect, but allowed the wells to be intensified into a single mega-well!

"Jost a tiny taste o' de ocean's might..." Winston mused to the room. "Bot ef de spirits be willing, me shall unleash so much more."

The alchemist gently plucked up the Seawell with a crystal tipped ensorcelling tool, lifting it into alignment above the gleaming well-glyphs in the center of the circle. The candles flickered, casting an unnerving shadow across the walls of Chest's interio. With Smoky acting in support, Winston began the delicate process of channelling energy through the wells, trying to unravel the crystal's latent powers like loose threads. Whispering a melodic chant to keep the circle's magic working and the spirits of levity on his side, he let the wells form into a single workable mass.

There was a slight crackle as the well accepted its new form and melded into a seamless whole. Smoky traced glyphic bands around the shining stone to seal and stabilize it. Then with a mischievous grin, the ferret placed a small Chi-stone against the well, stepping back with the other half still in his hand.

Channeling a little energy into the Chistone, a thin jet of water sprayed from the well's front, splattering the damp stones.

"By de whale's sweet song, it worked!" He cheered, clapping in glee at the device's successful activation and accidentally spraying water across half his workshop in the process. "AH! OOPS!"

Smoky waggled it's index finger at the alchemist in a scolding fashion at the inventor's antics. But a glimmer of inspiration shone in the Cadouri's dark eyes as he gazed at the new creation. "Dese Seawells are gonna be de key tuh harnessing som speed far Isonomia's ships alright!"

They continued their work for several trials, iteratively refining and testing the wells performance and stability. The amount of water the well could throw out was stunning and he quickly came to the realisation that testing inside his workshop was going to have to end before the entire place flooded.

He wandered over to Chest and patted them affectionately to attract their attention.

"Sorry tuh rouse yuh so soon me friend!" Winston apologized to the sleepy, legged box. "But de currents call an' we need tuh get out dere an' test dese tings!" Chest gave a reluctant rumble as it obediently leaned into its stride and began plodding behind the friendly ferret.

Up through gravel lanes they trudged, emerging onto the jetty where the boats and ships were launched and docked.

Appearance

When standing at his full height, Winston towers a full 1 foot and one blueberry tall. A fact he will happily demonstrate before flicking said blue orb into the air with his nose and then eating it with a snappy grin.

His eyes are dark and sharp, ringed by dark brown fur upon the bright white fur that sets off across the rest of his face.

Equipement

Winston usually carries the following on his person:
  • Cassion's Locket hangs snugly around his neck.
  • Winston's Fairy Bell hangs from his tool-belt attached to his hip. It's 'ringer' is often bound by a small piece of cloth to prevent it giving away his position while in the wilderness.

Fitting for failure

After a lot of trial and error, not to mention wrecking and sinking a row-boat. The well had worked, that was not the problem, but it had worked so well the rowboats hull had been compromised by the force the well had released. The ferret had to spend several breaks recovering the sunken well using his
swim armour
from the bottom of the shallows just off shore.

Now, he was discussing this problem with the master Shipwright, Streth, the only person capable of adjusting the ships to accomodate this final requirement. "So you're sayin' these here crystals can shove whole ships through the water?" The man scratched his grizzled chin as he examined the prototype floating in a bucket of seawater. "I'll believe it when I sees it, Master Cadouri."

Winston flicked an ear in amusement at the burly man's skepticism. As Chief Shipwright for the Seaspray, he had overseen the construction of the vessels for the faction's fledgling fleet. If anyone understood the immense power needed to propel bulkheads through rough waves, it was him. "Well, when me turned op de powa an de well, dis bit af de boat cracked..." He said, pointing at the diagram the man had provided. The ferret seemed completely unintimidated by the towering shipbuilder's crossed arms. "Imagine de entire force o' de ocean unleashed tuh drive yer vessels swift as dolphins wi'out need fer crews tuh haul wretched oars night an' trial! Bot... Et es all pushing dere..." He pointed again and the diagram of the ships for Isonomia.

Streth grunted, bushy eyebrows scrunching beneath his yellow workman's cap. "Oh, so THAT's what happened to the rental." He glared at the ferret, whom had paid to replace the small craft, but was apparently still not out of the man's bad-books. He looked down at the hull and sighed. "Ships are design to be propelled by the sails or oars. And you have several of both generally." He rubbed his chin. "Perhaps if you mounted them here and we reinforced the keel there."

Winston started to get excited as the ship builder's ideas began flowing. A ten-trial passed swiftly as the Chief Builder redesigned critical reinforcements throughout the ship's keel and decks. Several hulls were already taking shape along Eglerion's sheltered harbor, but Streth focused on the nearly complete pride of the dock. The enlarged frames would support an even more extensive well-drive when fully fitted.

The ferret watched eagerly as the final main beams and waterproof seals were completed. Artisans swarmed over the emerging vessel like ants on a discarded fruit as they shifted the last heavy planking into position according to the master ship builder's new plans. The ferret had focused on the Alchemical elements and completing the final smithwelled thrusters, but involved himself in the working of the wood as and when necessary to support these two things.

When at last the ship sat ready for thruster integration, Winston presented himself to the busy foreman. "She be ready fer 'er crystal drives, Chief Builder?!" the ferret exclaimed with a salute.

But the master ship builder waved distractedly towards the towering skeletal hull. "Nay Sir Ferret, best wait till her decks be fastened properly for loadin' up below. Last thing we need is someone tumblin' through loose boards atop yer contraptions."

The Cadouri had to concur with this logic, so he contented himself with assisting crews with non-critical aspects as finishing proceeded. There was no shortage of fittings needing adjustment or hardware requiring calibration across the numerous ships being built after all. So he tried to curb his impatience and threw himself joyfully into the tasks available each morning, which included no shortage of wood alchemy.

Finally, after long trials of hard graft, mistress fortune saw fit to smile upon the industrious little engineer. Streth himself arrived at Winston's door with wonderful news one sunny morning. The man was still steadfastly reluctant to enter the room of requirement, less still Chest itself and so he tugged on the bell-string the ferret had put in place for his convenience.

"Ahoy there. If ye can pry yer busy tail from yer tinkering, seems she is ready at last fer her... thrusters is et?" He gestured over a shoulder with his thumb. "Me lads'll be along presently to lend a hand haulin' em aboard if ye give the say so."

Winston was out the door in a flash, beaming up at the towering man. "Excellent Chief Builder! Me best be aff den!" He accepted the proffered hand and scurried lithely up the shipwright's arm to settle upon his shoulder as workers might carry a favored pet. But Winston was no mere animal, and Streth knew full well that the innocuous looking ferret was a driving force behind much of the remarkable progress Isonomia's fleet was making. Aside from which, he was also the single most charismatic person the man knew. It was quite hard to say no to him.

Continued here.

Winston

Feedback

"Jost a tiny taste o' de ocean's might..." Winston mused to the room. "Bot ef de spirits be willing, me shall unleash so much more." ~~ I’d find this line more ominous coming from a more malevolent pc… Still it does give me a bit of the shudders.

Aside from which, he was also the single most charismatic person the man knew. ~~ Respectfully disagreed, but I’ll chalk this up to the unreliable narrator :P

Okay the tinkering here seemed up to code, and it was nice to see Winston’s new method for ensorcelling first hand. It seemed perfectly unique to him, however, I would hesitate to credit any other source for his methods there.

His interactions with the master builder were also interesting, injecting a bit of realistic physics concerns to the very magical ensorcelling method.

I didn't award renown because I thought Winston was meant to be keeping this construction quiet? If that's incorrect, let me know and I'll amend.

Good job
