Put it Away Right, or So Help Me

There was someone at work whom Kotton disliked. If his heart could transcend outside his ribcage, it would revolt, relish a weapon and strike this man down for all his worth. Maybe a tad dramatic, but you know how things went. The guy was that kind of person. Always doing the bare minimum, always placing things in the wrong area regardless of appropriate labels, always causing extra work for other employees who had to fix the issues he caused. Kotton watched each and every day as this man created tension and turmoil. He was confident this person was performing his duties incorrectly on purpose, advocating for insubordination.

Kotton had spoken with the temporary employees, asked how they felt about their work environment. Kotton had been too busy with Worick's patients and paperwork to find a time to understand the rest of the department, but most people always complained about how they had to disembowel ice boxes just to reorganize materials all because others refused to follow organisational guidelines.

Kotton had taken time to investigate this particular individuals’ work ethic. There was slim to no evidence that suggested he performed his work in any manner other than the bare minimum. This proof made the young man’s veins boil with blood inflicted with hysteria he had to take a extra break in the lunch room. He was a strong proponent for equality- nay, he required it. If his managers and supervisors could not see the lack effort from this specific employee, then they were as blind as a mole without a the ground to dig through.

Kotton's eardrums pounded with the pulsation of his blood. It rose as he currently observed the perpetrator set a sample he had been working with in the incorrect bin in the ice box. His lungs quickly constricted, giving him the courage and confidence needed to perform an impromptu confrontation.

“Hey,” he announced, planting his feet powerfully against the tile. “That’s not whewe that goes and you know it. Please follow the standawd opewating pwocedures as I know you know how to.” Kotton was so hopped up on adrenaline that it hadn't crossed his mind to experience embarrassment upon speaking in front of someone who might mock his speech impediment.

The man scoffed and shook his head. “I think I know what I am doing,” he replied with a glint in his eye.

Whilst Kotton usually recoiled at the contention of a confidence greater than his own, he was devout to what he believed. “No,” he insisted. “I don’t think you do.” And upon closer examination, he really didn't. He was mixing specimens which, without proper labelling could cause a whole slew of issues. Someone could get the wrong thing which could harm them or someone else like giving herbs to someone who's deathly allergic, or sending out the wrong shipment to a small business in dire need of the right thing. There could even be problems with the law.

The man’s eyed widened and a bizarre smirk formed against his chapped lips. Kotton couldn’t tell if it was malevolent or simply adequate assured.

“Who are you?” he asked, taking a step forward.

Kotton didn’t back down. His anger at the lack of common sense and absence of accountability, at the mere inkling of irresponsibility made his blood curdle with vexation. “Kotton,” he said with gusto. “And I believe you misplaced the item you wewe just holding in this ice box.”

The man, whom would later be known as Maldivine, narrowed his eyes. He gave a wayward glance to the ice box and sighed. He bowed his head and offered an insincere smirk. “How long have you been here, young man?”

Kotton was instantly aware of his ploy to pull rank. It didn’t matter if Kotton was a newcomer, what mattered was the fact that he dedicated himself to rules and laws and organization and… this man just wasn’t cutting it.

Kotton's mind had started to shut down, his confidence waning with every verbal transaction. However, his heart still pounded with a tenacity that could not be vied. Was this guy seriously trying to say that because he had been employed for longer it meant he was more knowledgeable? Kotton bit his tongue, stopping himself from losing the remaining cool he had. He had to think about what to say next. Yelling and becoming enraged usually led defeat in a battle of opposition.

He carefully mulled over what his next words would be. Whilst an insecure man, particularly when it came to his speech impediment, his strong morals for righteousness and justice stemmed from a root system so deep one could only fathom to dive into the earth’s core to find its origin.

“Does it mattew?” he finalized, retaining a neutral tone of voice. The energy it took to say this nearly wiped him out, but his heart continued to pound with voracity.

Maldivine glowered in return. “I suppose it doesn’t.”

"Doing the wight thing doesn't have a timestamp on it."

Kotton had yet to be satisfied. He theoretically rolled up his sleeves and called to the abstractness of the above for guidance. He needed to reach Maldivine, to persuade him to follow the rules of the workplace. If Kotton knew the process flow, then he held no lesser expectation to those who had been on-boarded long before he had, especially if his lack of placing something where it was supposed to go could lead to consequences far worse than being dubbed a simple 'oopsie'.

The young man whispered internally, what would you do? whilst giving himself a few moments to close his eyes and contemplate. The sentences he pondered were true to him and only strengthened his ability to metamorphically process.

Eyes still shut tight in the attempt to block out the external noise that prevented him from interpreting the truth, he was finally able to decipher from the conversation what was genuinely true; he had he the ability to determine what was a load of falsehood all whilst communicating with this very same man who held such uncouth confidence.

“The pwoper placement of this sample is in the lowew left bin of the ice box. You know this to be the twuth.”

Kotton’s head recoiled greatly after the expenditure of energy required of him to make real via the commencement of his blessing. He blinked away the grime that blurred his vision, desperately hoping to see what would unfolded as a result. He was certain this was a good use for his divine ability, especially after his mistake with the two boys and the teddy bear. He waited a mere second to recuperate before haphazardly continuing, “what do you say?”

Maldivine studied Kotton for a few moments. Almost too long, for what Kotton worriedly though. His pupil’s narrowed and dilated all within the span of a few seconds. And the process repeated itself multiple times before Kotton was intimidated with strangeness and forced to look away.

He knew that with the newly fashioned mark upon his forehead, he needed to start small in order to encourage people to believe his word, but he figured given the situation, the circumstance, even the environment, that he had a generous shot of landing victory than if he had spun this suggestion simply out of the blue.

Whilst he had holistically injected his own truth into the statement, it wasn’t solely his. It was the business he worked for. With this in mind, he was sure the invitation would connect with something in Maldivine mind. An individual’s psyche was only so resilient.

The encounter passed with the pace of slug. “You’re… right,” Maldivine said robotically. He slowly reached into the ice box to extract the sample that had been incorrectly placed. He found the correct bin and stowed the sample away where it was meant to be.

Kotton couldn’t help himself. “That’s what I thought,” he nearly muttered, pushing past Maldivine with assuredness and a bit of sass.

He wished he could do that to every selfish person, to every incompetent soul. It would all be to make a place more organised, peaceful and homogenous. He relished the ability to lead the senseless toward the realm of utter enlightenment. It didn’t matter how long he had been performing this job, what mattered was his level of common sense. A degree from any fancy institution could only guarantee smarts in a related field. Real world situations required ubiquitous knowledge such as where to put things when you were done with them, how to read something and place it in the appropriate section and how to conclude a paper so as to get your point across. Real life was a life that necessitated less book smarts and more street smarts.

He found his forehead with his first two fingers and pressed, moving them in a circular motion to try to massage the angry headache that suddenly manifested. He needed a raise. It was easy to understand from experience that education didn’t always equal brilliance. Someone could have someone else, someone who had gone to school for eight or more, find themselves knowing not how to flip the sign in the window and how meant a world of difference between acquiring customers and being dead for the entire day. Open and closed, that's how some minds worked. Caffeine might be a component of that, who knew?

Kotton smirked at the analogy he used. Honestly, he couldn’t help himself from laughing. In fact, he couldn’t stop chuckling. It was like he was drunk- the onslaught of hilarity refused to cease. He had to excuse himself to the nearest restroom in order to regain his composure.

He didn’t think he was narcissistic or egotistical. He didn’t even think he was all that smart, but it warranted times such as this that gave him the edge into egomaniacal laughter. He glanced at the mirror before exiting the bathroom. He had work to do and by gods he would do it right. Someone had to.

Comments: You made that guy at work sound quite unpleasant. I immediately ended up disliking him as well. Kotton’s reaction was entirely justified in my opinion, and you described it well.

I’m impressed by how detailed your description of Kotton’s thoughts and feelings is. It made this thread very interesting to read!

I also like how Kotton’s low skill in Discipline and Intimidation played a part. He seemed to barely hold it together – Maldivine made him so angry! – and when it came to confronting him, Maldivine just scoffed!

Kotton’s blessing came in very handy when it came to persuading Maldivine! I agree with Kotton, by the way. He really needs a raise!
