Eternity was trying to lure a small bird even though half of her body was leaning out of the same window and her eyes were still getting used to the brightness after her disturbed sleep.
"Here Birdie" She stumbled, making the most believable bread wave she could. The bird, which was still quite young and had the naivete to trust her and regarded the strange young woman teetering at the window frame with interest. Eternity presented an odd picture. She held the edge fiercely as her hair flowed in the wind, her eyes were wide with focus, and her knuckles turned white.
She was unable to explain why she was even attempting to force the bird. Shanon, her friend who was staying over, was certain to be in the dark. She wasn't really paying attention to Eternity's antics as she lounged on the bed and used a knife to carve patterns onto a piece of wood. She hurriedly tore off a piece and threw it to the window, watching it anxiously. She sighed deeply in defeat as the bread completely missed its target and fell to the ground. Snorting, Shanon cracked a wisecrack and said, "Well done."
"Fek off," Eternity said then squinted her eyes before ripping another, smaller piece off. The crow did nothing except observe, standing motionless the entire time.
Eternity couldn't help but laugh as Shanon mimicked back what she said in the most absurd voice possible. Eternity went back to the bird, and Shanon went back to her carving. The crow flapped its wings and let out a single caw. She kept staring at its beady black eye with an almost intelligent expression. Leaning out the window just far enough to avoid falling, Eternity tore off another chunk, split it up in her fingers, and continued.
She attempted not to scare off her newly discovered interest by speaking in a low, quiet voice. " Look at this wonderful bread, you cutey bird." The crow shifted slightly when the light from the afternoon sun caught the delicate color of its feathers. "You know you want it" She waved her hands around a little, letting some breadcrumbs fall.
Eternity's study suddenly squawked and extended its wings, taking flight. She was perplexed by the abrupt change in its behavior and exclaimed, "Hey, Shanon!" She flung herself at the bed with a silly grin as her friend fell over while futilely attempting to shield herself from Eternity's stale bread that was thrown at her. Eternity laughed as she did this.
"Stupid, I was connecting with him." Even though Eternity pouted, she wasn't actually angry. No matter what dumb thing Shanon had been doing, she always managed to be charming. She gave her a gentle shove before standing up and yawning deeply.
"Eternity, I was growing tired of you luring birds. Would you want to go outside and engage in some old-fashioned sneaking around? It's a beautiful day. It'll be a better evening, I wager." Eternity gave her some thought for a minute, her head cocked to one side. However, the bird was gone, that curiosity subsided, and Shanon was ultimately correct. It was a beautiful day. She winked, grinned broadly, and retrieved her shoes from the ground. "I will race you."
The contest began. Eternity was already pulling her boots on and half skipping to the door when Shanon yelled, "Hey you!" She eagerly pushed it open, wriggled her feet into her worn-in but cozy boots, and started rushing towards the stairs. Because she knew Shanon would be behind her soon, brimming with pretended outrage, she started to giggle. She continued to run, her boots pounding loudly on the floor of. Eternity sped towards the door. A neighbor glanced out his door, immediately recognized who it was, and turned his eyes to the sky. Of course, it was Eternity.
At last, Shanon appeared, yelling in a feigned wrath. The incoherence of whatever she was saying only served to make Eternity laugh more, her laughter spilling out as she ran. She went off the beaten path, down an alley that collected junk. She barely managed to land each jump as she hopped over bits of trash. Short but nimble, Shanon was catching up.
Even though Eternity was getting out of breath, she wouldn't stop until she had reached her destination first. She and Shanon were getting close to the finish line; they weren't all that far, so it was only a brief race, but that's why it was enjoyable and that's why the two ladies did it so frequently. To the annoyance of every neighbor.
Eternity descended some steps with a huff of triumph, and just then Shanon, her ginger hair clinging to her face with perspiration, charged at her in a tackle. " You must wait till we are both ready, you cheater; that wasn't fair!" As they fell, Shanon reached out to seize Eternity's shoulders, and Eternity struggled to break away. They both had no impact other than to exhaust them.
Eternity finally gave up and let young Shanon to pin her. But it was a cool relief to lie on the ground, so it wasn't all horrible. Regardless of whether the race was fair or not, she had won. However, she refrained from saying anything as the two women jumped to their feet.
The place that they were was wide and pleasantly crowded. Since it was mid morning, many people were out and about, either expecting to see or be seen, or selling goods in an effort to make some coin. Eternity felt hot from the race and a little uneasy.
The two women went across the main path side by side for a time. They couldn't stand side by side due to their different heights, but their friendship was obvious. They chatted merrily, their footfall synchronizing the way they usually do when longtime friends walk together. Although they occasionally made jokes, shouted at one another, and called each other names, they both sensed the intensity of their connection. Because of their sense of humor, they went on for quite some time.
Shanon appeared to be about to forget why they had decided to even leave the house, but Eternity kept thinking about the humourous idea of trivially interfering with people's days as they went about their business, so eventually she remembered and suddenly pulled Shanon to the side.
Shanon complained, "What?" Eternity pointed to a young woman she had just seen, wandering demurely through the crowds, and gave her a sharp prod between the ribs, a surefire way to get her to stop talking. "She looks cute doesn't she?" She twitched her brows. She had pointed out a lovely-looking woman. To highlight her lovely, pale face, she smoothened her hair. Although it didn't really matter, the things she wore indicated that she was wealthier than Shanon and Eternity put together.
Shanon scowled and her eyes got smaller. "So what? After you poked me in the ribs so impolitely, you..." Eternity disregarded the previous remark and instead thoughtfully focused on the woman who went to talk to someone. Eternity hadn't decided what she wanted to do yet. As the thought formed, Eternity grabbed her friend's hand.
"She hasn't seen us yet, so hurry. Come on down." Eternity pulled her away from the young woman's line of sight and down an alley where it was a bit quieter. Thankfully, Shanon knew how Eternity could be, so she didn't object to the handling, but she did watch her friend's expression with interest. Suddenly, Eternity grinned.
"Right! You continue to watch the attractive woman. Please, if you wouldn't mind." Shanon was the target of that. Eternity didn't waste any time in explaining because she was so incredibly proud of herself for the little thought she'd had. "With our acquaintance with the curly hair, I believe we should try a small con. You may not agree with me, but she seems like a kind person. Don't you think so, Shanon?" Shanon nodded. "And oh, we could pretend to be poor, and we would have a hard time providing for our kids tonight if it weren't for the assistance of such a lady?"
Eternity laughed for a bit then turned serious. "We should certainly get a little creative but we have to take this seriously." She squatted and raked her hands across the floor, gathering flecks of dirt and dust as she went. Finally, she lifted her covered hands and started smacking herself and her friend to look dirty and poor.
Shanon was as prompt as usual, and this situation was no exception. She giggled and grabbed her own piece of dirt, which immediately landed in Eternity's hair. next, her face next, her clothing The two women quickly became hysterical to the point of exhaustion and completely, completely dirty. They had perhaps gone a little too far, Eternity believed, but it was too late to make any changes at this point. She was confident that they had generally avoided attention, even if it was just because they had selected a quieter alley rather than one where their target was not visible. A few passersby had glanced at them a little bit. Hopefully they could pull it off.
