[Memory] Departing Feelings

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

The trial of the young Aesir’s departure was almost at hand. He was scared of what was about to come. He hadn’t ever actually left his home, and while there was a part of him that had always wondered what was beyond the next hill, he wasn’t blind to how nice this place was and how wonderful its people were. He was thinking these thoughts as he threw hay bales from one of the lofts down to be used the next trial.

Jasper knew he would miss his parents. His mother’s maternal warmth and support and his father’s stoic hummer and support. He didn’t know what he would face in the world outside of their home. He squatted to help him lift the heavy hay bale better, and while he was doing that he heard the sound of footsteps on the ladder. He wasn’t surprised people had been saying their private good byes to him as the trial approached for him to travel to the capital.

As he turned holding the hay bail he saw for the first time that it was his older brother Lynond. Jasper frowned. This was one person Jasper hadn’t expected to ever say good bye, well not privately. He tossed the bail to the ground floor where it landed next to the others. He stepped back and turned to look at Lynond. Jasper folded his arms and leaned back against a stack of hay bales. The two eyed each other warily. Finally Lynond spoke. “So you running away again.” He mocked. Jasper’s eyebrow shot up at his brother statement. The young man was tired of his older brothers belittling, he was anxious about his new life and if he could make it as a an Aesir. It appeared that his brother wasn’t done. “You an Aesir, pff, you can’t talk with the spirits. Everyone just fell for another one of your acts.” His older brother’s expression turned nast(ier) as he continued. “Well you can’t keep fooling them now. You dug yourself into a ditch now. Do you know what people do to people who fail at their jobs.”

Jasper could feel it as his brother hit on every self doubt that he had about himself. Lynond seeing he had hit a cord continued. “I can wait to see you fail, and come back and outcast. Then finally everyone will see that I am the smarter, stronger, and better son and brother. Finally those little squirts will listen to me and give me the respect I deserve. You won’t be there to protect them anymore.”

Lynond had played the wrong card. Jasper might have had doubts about himself but he had spent to long protecting his younger brothers from Lynond’s nastiness. Jasper was well aware that his brother had some weird sense that as older brother he was their undisputed boss. Jasper had worried about with himself leaving that his brothers would be left exposed. “Leave them alone.”

“Why, I will be in charge of this clan one trial and everyone will have to do what I say.” Lynond said. “Including our snot nosed brothers, but I will make sure they respect me before then.”

“You are pathetic. Grandpa and Father are great leaders. You are nothing like them” Jasper snarled, arcs of anger suddenly released. “I will become an Aesir, and advise the elders to kick you out then we will see who the failure is.” He said throwing his brothers words back in his face. Lynond’s face twisted and he leaped at Jasper, his fist extended. Jasper side stepped but the fist still came in contact with his ear. Jasper was angry and was about to back down this time. Jasper brought his fist up and brought it in contact with his brothers stomach. His brother grunted at the contact stepped back a step.

Lynond pulled his fist back again and swung it back and Jasper’s face. Jasper ducked his head and this time tilted his lowered head and used it to ram into his brothers chest. It was neither graceful nor well done, and he felt a pain in his neck and figured the head was the best battering ram. Lynond grunted again but ended up collapsing on Jasper as he briefly lost his wind. Jasper struggled to get out from under his brother as the other tried to grapple him. The two swayed back forth for a while as Jasper grabbed his brother’s legs. Eventually Jasper’s bigger size and thanks to his active outdoor life style, more strength won out and he flipped Lynond on to his back. The long anger drove Jasper forward and he dropped to his knees next his brother to avoid another wrestling match. As he dropped down he swung his fist. His brother tried to move but had little movement options and so his nose avoid Jasper’s fist but not the side of his head.

The two young men were now shouting at each other as Lynond reached up trying to grab Jasper. The younger brother dodge the flailing hands that we trying to strangle him. He brought his other fist down and cuffed Lynonds chin. There was a bit more scuffling, but neither boy was very good at fighting, in the end Jasper’s superior strength and endurance won out. As the two separated Jasper returned to his original position as both boys gasped for breath. Jasper reached up and touched his ear, and then felt his neck which had been scratched by his brother. Lynond was clearly the loser though as his eye was already changing color as well as around his jaw, and he was crouching a bit from the gut punch.

“Leave them alone Lynond or I will come back and finish this fight.” Jasper said a felt a bit of blood in his mouth from a cut on the inside of his lip. Lynond didn’t say anything, he just sneered but he did leave. Jasper sat down one of the bales of hay and wasn’t sure what to do. It was a few moments after he heard the barn door close, one couldn’t really slam it, that he heard footstep on the ladder again. Jasper looked up having no clue who he would see. His eyes opened wide when he saw his mother coming up the stairs. Jasper felt himself deflate as he was sure that he was about to get talked to.

He was surprised when instead his mother sat down on the bale next to him and putting her arm around him pulled his close. The two sat quietly like that for a while. Finally his mother spoke, “Jasper I have always appreciated you, but more so in this last season.” She said her head pressed against Jaspers as he rested his on her shoulder, which was becoming a bit awkward since he was so tall now. “This last season I have begun to realize just how much you have always do for us.”

“You will have Rewan still.” Jasper said.

“He is a good boy, but his humor makes him a less aware of others.” His mother said. “I am aware of Lynond and his behavior, as is your father.” She tilted her head and kissed the top of Jasper’s head. “Thank you for always being there for you siblings. You have been a wonderful older brother and a great help to me and your father.” She raised her head and then began to investigate Jasper’s face. “Including fighting your brother.”

“I’m not in trouble.” Jasper said.

His mother was quiet and she gentle touched his ear and then his other injuries. “I don’t won’t ever encourage fighting, but I whole support defending yourself. Though I would recommend learning how to dodge faster, and improving your punch.” She sighed and looked at her second born. “No your not in trouble, I heard most of the argument.” Her expression grew hard indicating that someone else wasn’t going to be let off so easy. “Remember Jasper that you will meet good and bad people as you go out in the world. Please remember who you are and come back to us more mature, wise, but we still want it to be you who comes back.”

Jasper looked down not exactly sure what his mother was asking on him, he suspected it was to be careful who he associated with. He looked down at the floor and shuffled his feet. “It just feels right that I should go and learn and grow. I feel like there is something out there calling to me.” He said quietly. “But I don’t want to do. I love it here.”

His mother hugged his again. “My father loved you so much. Which may have been part of Lynond’s problem, but he always told us that you would need to be allowed to fly where ever the winds would take you.” Her voice was quiet. “He said to teach you so that where ever that would be you would take Alivilda with you. So Jasper that is my advice to you. Go discover who you are meant to be, but always keep us with you.”

The two were silent for a few moments more, and then his mother stood up and said. “I will give you one last piece of advise grandpa gave me. “Remember to lock your wrist when you hit someone.” She smiled at Jasper’s surprised expression. “Your brother’s will be in to finish with the hay, lets get some ice on your face. Then I need to find Lynond.” Jasper minded his mother and follower after her. He thought about what she had said. It didn’t take away his worries but it was something to ponder.

Skill Review: All Skills used appropriately to PC's level
Notes: Hi Jasper,

Before I begin the review, I'm going to have to ask that you alter the font used in the body of this template. While cursive styles work for timestamps and even the menu on the sides of this template, they make the body of the post very very difficult to read, downright impossible for someone who has trouble seeing small or fine text. I had to copy paste it into an external word processor just to change the font so I can read it, because it's very hard on my eyes. Please use an easier to read printed font for the actual body of the post, if you would? Thanks.

That aside let's get to the review.

Ooo the sibling rivalry is strong in this story. Lynond is downright nasty in this, though, going beyond the usual passive aggro teasing that I remember from my siblings ;) Lynond at least has the good grace of being straight forward, even if he does come off as a insensitive and stupid brute.

I thought the fight was well described, you have a real talent for describing unarmed combat in my opinion. Even Mama Ardeichy had some advice for her Jasper, about locking the wrist on the right hook. Good going mom! I loved that little touch at the end.

Jasper seems like a very nice fellow in contrast to Lynond. Very likeable.
