722 Vhalar 4th ~ Market day
It was was the competition's market day and Winston appeared to have drawn lots with Sunpha and a chap called Naddar for the Red Team. Winston had not yet spoken much with Naddar, but he was known for putting a little artistic flair in his meals and if he was on side, then Winston was glad to have someone that might be able to paint a sign or two.
On the other team was Angella and the two other contestants that Winston obviously had met, but didn't know terribly well yet. There were so many people involved, it often made Winston's head spin.
Between the three of them, Naddar had dealt with the signage using his limited, yet infinitely more competent Artistic talents, Sunpha had broadly speaking pontificated around making sure things were 'in the right place' and people were all 'working together' and Winston had focused on ensuring that all their products were clearly labelled and priced in accordance with their collective agreements. They had:
- From Winston:
- Sugarrubs
- Rubhoney-drops
- From Sunpha:
- Toffy hearts
- From Naddar:
- Chocholate (Rose flavoured) Roses
- Tiramisu Bights
immaculately sculpted
into perfect replicas of what they were supposed to be and Sunpha has opted to produce just one variety of sweets. Winston took every opportunity to learn more about what Naddar had managed to do as they set out the stall. His recipe for Tiramisu sweets was quite interesting. The Blue Team had produced a wide range of chocolate and sweets also, but they had decided to work more closely together and their entire shops had been themed. It really was quite a good layout, with each of their contributions following matching colour schemes and complimentary flavours. Winston was certain that what they had each produced was all quite delicious, however, getting Sunpha to give up the limelight or Naddar to compromise in his perfectionism had greatly hampered his attempts to consolidate their stall into one coherent theme.
This being the case, they simply made the most of the differences and aimed to 'cover all ilk' as their marketing strategy.
Winston had his
best Tuxido on
and was pulling out all the tricks he knew. Having tested the sweets themselves, he knew they were good, so it was simply about getting attention. If a juggling ferret didn't do it, then the continual "Roll UP! Roll UP!" Was his next go-to tactic, using his Hero Pose from atop a box that stood to the side of the main table. "Get the perfect gift! A sweet treat for loved ones or perhaps a gift for a special occasion, a sweet rose for your sweetheart?!" Winston had to admit, that despite her earlier general 'fuss' and lack of 'practical action', having Sunpha on their side now was no bad thing. She was a natural with the crowds and engaged people in conversation and drew in crowds with ease. He could not help but think back to the conversation he had witnessed between the two judges ... something he planned never to tell anyone ever.
"Have you tried some of these? They are simply to DIIIIE for. Here, take a few to try ... See? how about a bag of these, just for later? ... How's Janice doing? She'll LOVE some of these ..."
As the day passed, both Teams sold well. Naddar's supply ran out quickly, as he had focused on quality far above quantity, however, there were ample of both Sunpha's and Winston's to keep them going.
He shared a good few waves and friendly good wishes with Angela as they moved around the market. She seemed to be doing well and enjoying herself, though one of her team's sweet had been reported to be far too bitter and was not selling well. He invited Angela over to sample a few of their sweet, during a few of the lulls in the day and she did the same. Their goods were quite nice, with the exception of one.
The Scandle
The day had passed and despite not quite selling out, Winston was certain they had done well. The remainder of the sweet, of course, went to the orphans, along with anything else Winston could find going spare. The problem was that their (the Red Team's) kitty was short about half the money it SHOULD have had!
At the time, there had been a wide range of accusations made and glaring going on between some of the contestants, but during the day, all three of them, Winston Naddar and Sunpha had open access to the money tin. He could not imagine this would be anything but a mishap of some kind. It was not until Sunpha took a few of the judges aside to explain something to them that the entire event was called to be on hold.
The conclusion had been that the results of the Market Day would not be counted in the final consideration of the competition until the affair had been completely ironed out.
This entire thing had created a fire in the media surrounding the competition, furthermore, somehow it had gotten out that there was some doubt about Angela's background. Winston could not believe it. Not that she was involved in the missing money or that she had deceived the competition.
He waited until the croweds and questions had subsided and he and they all were able to leave for the day. Angela had been called to speak with the judges for quite some time and no one had seen her leave again. It was a day later before the shocking news that Angela had been disqualified from the competition came out! Winston's attempts to speak to the event organisers had thus far fallen upon deaf ears in the hubbub that followed, but Sunpha was quick to be seen in the lime-light of media attention. She was quoted as saying:
"Oh, my heart goes out to the poor girl. The desperation she must have been feeling to have taken this drastic course of action. The poor thing, all alone and such a good little cook."
His own statement had been much more closed.
"Me don't know wat's happened and only wish everyone involved in the competition all de very best."
He was determined not to get sucked into another trap and Angela, whatever her circumstances, still had the benefit of the doubt in his eyes. Winston did take exception to Sunpha's use of the words 'little' and 'cook'. Angella could 'cook' circles around Sunpha with her eyes shut and he simply refused to believe it was this open and close. Angela was not a thief ... was she? She did spend a lot of time with the street kids and they seemed to know her very well ... And out of necessity or not, they were a little sticky-fingered.
The Devil on My Shoulder

He set off into the streets, heading for the warehouse areas he'd seen the children retreating to on so many occasions. He found a secluded cubby-hole to hind in where he could keep an eye out for the children. He took a nibble of the oaty bar he had made for the day. He'd put it together with honey and dried fruits to try and make an energy-packed snack.
It took a while, but his patience paid off as down the street came, not just one, but two of the kids. He watched as one remained standing harmlessly as look-out as the other made their way down the street and up one of the allies. He waited until the watch-out had decided it was safe to follow.
He was about to head into the alley, but as he was getting up to go, someone else appeared in the street! It was Enid! That Reporter!
The Devil on My Shoulder
Curiosity: Quick! Throw something at him!
Winston: AH! Wat's 'e doin' 'ere?!
Curiosity: He must be following the children to!
Winston: So 'e knows?
Curiosity: Or paraps 'e is involved?
Winston: Nuh mun, surely nat?
Curiosity: He could be behind the whole THING!
Winston: But 'e's a reporter. 'e reports the news, nat makes et.
Curiosity: Really? Cos that's not really how it went last time.
Winston: It was nat really like THAT.
Curiosity: OK, either he's up to mischief or he's up to reporting .. which amounts to the same thing in my opinion.
Winston: Ef 'im es involved den me godda find out.
Curiosity: Viva la justice!

Winston resolved to go find out. Continued here ...
