Jasper and his brothers had all gone ashore to find information. The darkness affected all of them as they walked the strange streets of Almund. The city built of the old boats in the weird light or lack there of gave off a unpleasant vibe. Jasper actually was the most uncomfortable of the Ardiechy men as his connection to the spirits gave him an insight into what lay around them on a mother level. Jasper could sense Anoks of fear and other negative aspects. This place wasn’t safe. Without sitting down and focusing Jasper could only sense vague emotions.
He took a deep breath and straighten his posture and raised his chin. He looked at Rewan and Bryil who were giving him concerned looks. Rewan had been close to the Aesir since the younger brother was a baby. Over the arcs he had seen Jasper affected by his connection to the spirits and nodded as he watched Jasper straighten up. Bryil on the other hand was young enough that he hadn’t experienced those times with Jasper and so gave his brother a concerned look.
Jasper smiled at the two of them. “Let’s find the office over foreign issues and find some place else to stay.” His other brothers nodded. Both because as second born and the Aesir in charge of this expedition he had the right to make that decision and neither was loving this place.
Jasper held his Aspergillum which cast off a ever burning constant light as they walked and had handed his brother an ever burning lantern. The young man was sure why the world had seen fit to supply him with ever burning lights but he suspected that it was because he would have to walk dark paths in his life and might need to help others. They had wandered for a while not really able to tell much about what they were seeing in the weird darkness. Eventually Jasper heard the sound of someone in the ally they had just passed. He held up his hand and I indicated towards Bryil. With the practice of a hunter Jasper’s younger brother had his bow nicked and drawn before the cloaked figure could get near enough to cause damage. Jasper trusted his brother enough that while Rewan looked back Jasper watched what was ahead of them. He could sense that some Anok was being feed just at the edges of his senses.
Another cloaked individual stepped out and in a gruff voice growled at them. “No need for that.” Jasper’s eyes focused on this new person. As he moved closer he could sense an Anok was feeding on this man’s greed. “We just need to perform a simple business transaction and everyone can go there own ways.”
“We have no business with you.” Rewan called.
“Brother these men are thieves.” Jasper said and as he spoke he pulled his either towards himself and made a slicing motion that looked like he was indicating for silence but in relative he was using phasing to see if there were others down the alley.
“What do you idiots want we aren’t stupid enough to carry much change on us.” Rewan said having no clue what the slicing movement was but not about to Shute up. Jasper could see through the walls and knew that there were two more men. One of them with a knife and the other with a bow.
“Do you think I’m blind. Your brothers torch is Embersteel if I’m not mistaken.” The man growled at them. “So let’s be peaceful here and hand over.
Jasper released his phasing and stared glared at the man. “You will not touch Eldloga.” Jasper said as he pulled his dagger out and began to coat it with either. “You would make the best choice if you waited for someone else or even better change your life.”
“Now.” Came the growl. Jasper didn’t wait before throwing his dagger using snapshot technique. Jasper watched it disappear and instructed the dagger to reappear in the back of the hidden bow man. Jasper was good with a blade but he was hoping his spark would help.
I the same breath as him throwing the mugger started shouting “That was a…” but she didn’t get farther as Rewan lunged at the man and Bryil released his arrow. Jasper once his snap shoot was done jumped forward and brought his fist up to connect with the chin of the knife wielding bandit who now jumped out from the ally. Jasper flinched a bit impact he had forgotten to lock his wrist. Jasper didn’t let that slow him down as the much shorter man suddenly found a six foot three farmer boy run smack into him. Both men went tumbling down and rolled on the ground. It was at this point that Jasper was grateful for his spark as he could sense the man’s movements as he tried to kick Jasper. Turning side ways Jasper then used his leg to pin the man’s leg.
Luckily for the Ardiechy boys these robbers weren’t good fighters. They relied on intimidation more then skill. Jasper found himself sitting on the smaller man the knife laying out of reach of either. Bryil’s bandit was in the process of being tied up as he squirmed with an arrow in his thigh. Rewan had just knocked the original bandit unconscious and was now hauling the other bandit who had been nicked by Jasper’s blade though it neither hit anything vital or gave more then a flesh wound but it had distracted the bandit.
“Well what do we do with them?” Rewan asked as he held the last man. Jasper looked at Bryil and said “Tie them up and leave them.” The two brothers nodded but didn’t get very far before two armored men can around a corner down the street. The man who Rewan held called out. “Help officers were being robbed.” The Ardiechy’s looked at the thief like he was crazy.
When the guards arrived they took one look at the Melrathi and the group of young men who were dressed in black with black cloaks that hide hoods you could hide a face in. They stopped and looked around. Jasper looked up at them. “I believe the thief is confused here. They tried to rob us.”
It took a bit of time but eventually the guards accepted who was the real thief here. It helped that they had received reports of a group who had taken up waylaying older and defenseless people that matched the thieves description. Jasper also walked away with directions to the Foreign Affairs office. On a completely different island.
Suddenly in their wandering they came upon a massive Oak tree. All three stopped at looked up at the massive tree. This was something they could understand better then the strange city of dead ships. Together they walked forward under the branches the various lights enchanting them. They also found a large crowd gathered against the darkness. The brothers went to join the crowd while Jasper his eyes alight with wonder and pleasure approached the trunk of the tree. Once he was close enough he wrapped his arms around the massive trunk and closed his eyes. He began to mediate as he buried himself into the reach out to the spirit of the tree.
Jasper could feel the bark against his skin, even as he felt that he could feel parts of his body throbbing from the fight where he had been injured. He pushed past that and focused on the tree. Jasper was aware that the tree might not talk to him, that was fine, but he wanted the spirit of the tree to know that he was there. This was something more familiar for the Aesir. This was calming, and maybe would make for a good beginning to a strange first trial on Scalvoris.

The tree doesn't exactly "speak" to him, but two things happen. Firstly, his wounds are made better - not completely healed, but improved. Second, he gets to see and have a basic idea of the events of the Forging and the four Induks of Scalv. Nothing major specific, but will give him a rough idea of what happened. |
