11th of Vhalar 722

The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

Mudge's Day Off

Image

11th of Vhalar 722

While it would've been, and was, against the better judgment of most Hostel and Tavern owners in Egilrun, Woe thought the good will he stood to gain by inviting the Tannery was worth it. However, it'd still be breaks before they arrived, and there were liable to be others who weren't of the Tannery to join in on the festivities. Woe wanted everything to go well, without any incidents. He knew perhaps as well as any leatherworker or tanner, what kind of ingredients it took to neutralize the smell of their craft. Hanging dried oats and tea leaves rubbed down with essential oils infused with coffee curbed that smell (and most others into the bargain). He further presumed the good smells coming out of the kitchen, as Gloom was running the chef line tonight, would curb any disgust at the tanners and leatherworks union members.

And perhaps, though he hoped against the odds, the tanners would have the good sense to wash up before coming over. In either event, he set up these hanging boquets, spritzing a few in strategic locations with perfumes infused with citrus and coconut scents. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant, not overbearing. Woe was careful not to oversaturate the air with perfumed scents, lest anyone think he was running a brothel.

A break into preparations, Woe invaded the kitchen, bringing in more supplies for the cooks. Jordan Lindsay and Gloom were having words, and it didn't look harmonious as it might. Jordan was used to having the run of the kitchen, and rarely appreciated when Gloom (and his superior skills at cooking) was placed in charge. Woe ignored their chitter chatter, content to let them hash it out, lest he be seen to favor one over the other. He placed the meats and vegetables on the table for them, to sort out later. Then he went to work on his experimental cocktail, that he'd only just devised last cycle. He'd tried a variant of a Hot Toddy in Winston's workshop. Now he thought to stray a bit from the base recipe, and see what he could make.

He started by brewing a cold infusion of whiskey, cinnamon, cloves, black tea, honey, and lemon. On top of it all, he added one secret ingredient, which was slipped in sneakily. These he'd set aside, until the water was boiling. He added just a few grains of salt, which were swiftly dissolved in the infusion, to further ease the extraction of the essential flavors that he wanted to release.

The water began simmering, and he got to making several different jars of the infusion. Each with its own secret ingredient known only to him. Once the kettle began howling, he took it off the stove, and filled those jars with the hot water. The jars were covered then with cheese cloth, and then with a cap to keep the steam from escaping. Repeating this process with all of the jars, he stowed them away in a cabinet, allowing them to cool. He'd try a variety of preparations, hot, cold, lukewarm, with water added and so on, until he found the perfect mixture.

In the meantime, he had people to greet, so he lingered by Primula Troke's reception area, to see who would show up. He stood somewhat apart, so he didn't alarm any arrivals, while Primula admitted them to Onyx Hall.

OOCWill be leaving this open at least until mid cycle, to allow for folk to join in if they want.

Re: Mudge's Day Off

Image
Woe considered it a mixed blessing that Mudge and his guild of tanners and leatherworkers were the only ones to arrive to Onyx Hall on that day.
On the one hand, more business was always better business, so long as he was equipped and prepared to handle it. He was certainly that. But on the other hand, Mudge and his Tanners brought with them a miasma of scents, the lingering stench of the tannery, cloying even in its most subtle notes. Woe's system of air-freshening herbs helped the situation, but they could only do so much when Mudge himself entered.

The man's ochre eyes glanced this way and that, until they fell on Woe. At first the proprietor of Onyx Hall thought they might get belligerent, as Mudge had a reputation for having a temper among his apprentices. But then he surprised Woe, in a grin that spread ear to ear as he approached the Egg.

"Ey, tanks for havin' us." Mudge grunted out, as he clapped Woe on the shoulder with his grime-covered hand. "Smells nice in here, you use perfume?"

Woe was rather astonished that Mudge could smell anything, let alone the scent of perfume and herbs on the air. That was very curious to him. "Yes, it's a special day and I wanted to have it ready for your party. Would you come along? I'd like to dine with you if you want?" Woe of course had reasons for wishing to single out Mudge. As the Guild Master of the Tanners, he was in a position to offer Woe special access to the materials and services of his Guild. And if Woe had to leverage his title as Egg in order to do it, that was all for the better.

Next up would be the Glassblower's Union leader, but then Woe figured with the way he'd saved their leader's life the prior season it'd be easy. Mudge was a tougher nut to crack. Or so he thought.

Primula held her chin high as she made to escort them to their table. Woe stopped her, shaking his head, "Miss Troke, would you have the other members sign the registry so we know how many to expect? I'll take us to our table."

"Certainly, Mister Morandi." She said, and shuffled off to take up the reception.

Woe led Mudge to the table. Soon enough, the food that had been cooking the prior breaks was brought out promptly, with Gloom's compliments on them. Woe had told Gloom who they were expecting, and the tunawa decided based on what little he had to go on what kind of foods the tanner guild master would enjoy. Roast beef and prime rib were served, along with some potatoes spiced with herbs and slathered with butter.

As it was brought to their table, Mudge wasted no time but used his grubby hands to claw at one of the ribs, pulling it off without any regard for where he placed his hands on the dead animal. Gloom had chosen the menu correctly, from what Woe could tell.

"Good animal... Tasty." Mudge muttered.

Woe was taking a gamble with his opening line, he knew, but he figured someone like Mudge, who spent most of his time toiling in the tannery might actually enjoy talking shop. "You know, I was an apprentice to a tanner once. In Rynmere. He had a similar set up to the one you have on the coast."

"Oh?" Mudge retorted, as he chewed his food. "What kind of tannin solution you use?"

"We used the brains of the animal, along with some other additives as far as I remember." Woe replied.

"Hard work, tanning a hide." Mudge continued, not bothering to disguise his chewing or take breaks between utterances. "But good work. Beating the energy out of the youth keeps them out of trouble, you know? Gotta keep 'em employed."

Woe nodded, and then gave thought to the slave situation that had existed only a few arcs prior. Did Mudge use child slaves once upon a time? Woe decided it best to steer clear of that topic. "What kinds of solutions do you use to clean up your leather after the fact? I've seen your products, and they're always top notch as well as lacking the scent of the tannery."

"Well we don't leave the flesh on, of course, you know. But yeah leather has a way... Uhh perfume, herbs, ointments. That sorta thing. Sometimes we bring in a perfumer." Mudge shoved a particularly greasy slice of meat into his gullet, and then continued, "You wanting to make another purchase soon? We got a shipment of O'deer hides and other things coming..."

"I was hoping to discuss a provision for the Order of Adunih, actually. Faith Augustin is setting up a hospital, and I was wanting to meet with the local leaders of the commodities industries around Egilrun and the island abroad." Woe nodded at Mudge, taking a small bite of the meat himself, lest he look odd. He chewed, tasted, and then swallowed. Gloom had outdone himself, really. "The resources of this island are criminally underutilized, in my opinion."

"Tellin' me about it?" Mudge quirked a hairy brow, "I want to get some hunting parties roaming the Scaltoth, grab me some of them Collisithecus and their hides. Said to be special materials. The Tribesmen know how to work it and make it really useful. We could supply that stuff to brothels and wangless old men to up their libido, so they say." Mudge chuckled as he downed another cut of meat.

"The Collisithecus hide has special properties? How did you find out about this?"

"You hear these things, from hunters, people been through that area. It were... Gaul Jundland tole me. Yeah. Gaul."

Woe nodded, "Would you then agree to supply the Order with your leathers? I can assure you their need will be great."

"Yeah..." Mudge said, and for a moment Woe thought this was going to be easy. "Just bring me a full hide of a collisithecus. Then once you put the beast in front of me, I'll be up for it."

Woe pinched his nose. It had to be that difficult. "I'll see what I can do. Everything is possible, but nothing is free. Collisithecus is a tall order, and I'll expect quite a lot more than just supplier's rights."

Mudge waved his slick hands around in the air, making a face, "Yeah we'll settle that when you bring me the dead beast."

Woe sighed, and continued eating and drinking in Mudge's company, wondering how many breaks were left in the day.

Notes:
Woe's working the connections! I thought it was particularly clever of you to highlight Woe's political (and personal) maneuverings. He's always working an angle and trying to figure out how to spin a situation towards his chosen endgame.

In this case, I enjoyed the back and forth between Woe and the npc, who is clearly of a much different stock. Tossing pcs into the mix with different types of npcs helps, in my opinion, bring out different aspects of their personality and helps develop their depth. You don't shy away from doing that which is awesome.

This could have been a grind solo, but I like the way you wove the knowledge into the conversation and events going on. Made it seem more natural and intentional.

As always, you handle the npcs well. I like that Woe is always thinking about consequences, like his thoughts regarding Gloom and Jordan. He's a few steps ahead, knowing if he steps in, he could create a worse situation - well done!

Great writing - enjoy your rewards!
